Pugh
William M. "Bill" Pugh, age 81, died Thursday, June 15, 2000 at his home in Sugar Grove.
Mr. Pugh was preceded in death by his parents, Edison Lee Pugh and Myrtle Meek Pugh, a son, Barry W. Pugh; and a brother, K.M. "Jack" Pugh.
He was a lifelong resident of the Teas community of Sugar Grove and was a retired farmer and former member of the Smyth County Board of Supervisors.
Mr. Pugh founded the Virginia Highlander Association, having developed over the past 40 years the registered breed of horse/ponies known as Virginia Highlanders. He was also instrumental in establishing the wild pony herds at Grayson Highlands State Park.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Billie Wilhelmina Pugh of Sugar Grove; one daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Paul Cooper of Bristol; one daughter-in-law, Pamela Geib of Richmond; one sister, Marguerite "Peg" Pittard of Sugar Grove; one sister-in-law, Katherine H. Pugh of Wytheville; four grandchildren, Beverly Pugh and Lara Pugh, both of Richmond, Jason W. Mullins of Kingsport, Tenn., and Amy E. Brown of Columbus, Ohio; one great-grandson, Brandon Brown, Columbus, Ohio; four nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 18, at 2 p.m. at Elizabeth United Methodist Church in Teas with the Rev. Kenneth Conner and the Rev. Donald Medley officiating. Burial will follow in the Pugh Family Cemetery in Teas. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Seaver-Brown Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Elizabeth United Methodist Church, c/o Joanne Barton, treasurer, 242 Dickies Creek Road, Sugar Grove, VA 24375.

Bogle
Franklin Delano Bogle Sr., age 62, died Monday, June 19, 2000 at his home in the Stoney Battery Community of Marion.
Mr. Bogle was born in Fairfax County to the late Henry and Geneivia Bogle and had lived in Smyth County for over 34 years. He was a member of the Smyth County Moose Lodge.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Susie Bogle and Helen Bogle; one brother, Rocky Bogle; and a daughter-in-law, Kay Bogle.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Bogle; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Junior and Omijean Bogle, Tony Bogle, Dennis and Lisa Bogle, and Bobby Bogle, all of Marion; three daughters and one son-in-law, Edith Croy, Marion, Sharon Crocket, Rural Retreat, and Muff and Chipper Hafley; six sisters, Laura Mae Hitt, Alexandria, Edith Curtis, Shirley Medina, both of Fairfax, Barbara Mullins Manassas, Carolyn Elliott, Falls Church, and Diane Suttles, Strasburg; three brothers, Reed Bogle and Raymond Bogle, both of Falls Church, and Wayne Bogle, Partlow; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 22, at 11 a.m. in Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment
will follow in the West Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Frye
Elizabeth Price Frye, age 81, of Saltville, died Sunday, June 18, 2000 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Frye was a member of the Riverview Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder and Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Saltville Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She was a retired nurse and a graduate of the first Smyth County Vocational School of Practical Nursing Class, and served on the Saltville Medical Clinic Board of Directors for several years. She belonged to various other civic and community organizations.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Charles Andrew Frye Sr.; one son, Charles A. Frye Jr., Broadford; two daughters, Mrs. Tom (Judy) Hess, Saltville, and Mrs. Jim (Toby) Cook, Abingdon; one sister, Alice Austin, Saltville; one brother, James Greer, Saltville; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; two sons-in-law, Tom Hess and Jim Cook; one daughter-in-law, Lisa Frye; a special friend and neighbor, David Heldreth.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 20, at 8 p.m. at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Don A. Inazu and the Rev. Kathy Hutton officiating. Graveside services will be conducted today, June 21, at 11a.m. by the Saltville Chapter Order of the Eastern Star at the Elizabeth Cemetery. Flowers are appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Saltville Rescue Squad or the Wytheville Presbyterian Children’s Home.

Jefferson
E. Paul Jefferson, age 84, died Saturday, June 17, 2000 in Rocky Mount.
Mr. Jefferson was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Lee and Cora Lee Dillon Jefferson; his first wife, Pearl G. Jefferson; and a sister, Ernestine Brooks.
He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a well-known Bluegrass musician and a banjo player extraordinaire.
Surviving are his wife, Linda G. Jefferson, Rocky Mount; two daughters, Doris J. Kirby, Marion, and Barbara J. Quinn, Rocky Mount; one granddaughter, Kimberly B. Florio, Rocky Mount; two grandsons, Keith Brooks, Rocky Mount, and Chad Quinn, Newport News; two sisters, Gladys Bible and Josie (Joe) Blankenship Settles, both of Rocky Mount; one niece, Bonnie Wimmer; three nephews, David Bible, Kenneth Bible and Michael Blankenship.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 12, at 1 p.m. at Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Melvin Harris officiating. Interment
was in Franklin Memorial Park.

Jones
Lavaun C. Jones, age 84, of Sugar Grove, died Monday, June 12, 2000 at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn.
Mrs. Jones was the widow of Edward Jones. She was born Jan. 5, 1916 at Flatridge, to Dexter and Lillian Belle Russell Cole.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Thu Colbert, Houston, Texas; one sister, Edith Plummer, Troutdale; a special niece, Nadine Anderson, Flatridge; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 16, at 11 a.m. in Baptist Union Church, Flatridge, with the Rev. Grady Byrd and the Rev. Mike Owens officiating. Interment
was in the church cemetery.

Musselwhite
Thomas William (Tom) Musselwhite, age 77, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem.
During World War II, Mr. Musselwhite served in the U.S. Army with the 461st Infantry, AAA AW BN. He served 331 days in combat in the European Theater of Operations and fought in five campaigns of war including Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, St. Low, Rhineland and Central Europe.
After the service, he returned to his hometown of Saltville and served as a deputy sheriff for Smyth County. He later became a police officer for the town of Saltville and after leaving the town of Saltville, he worked for the Radford Arsenal before moving to Roanoke where he worked for years at Sears Roebuck Company. He left Sears and became a business partner with Bobby Pedigo at Viking Fence Company. After his retirement, he became an estimator for Powers Fence Company where he worked until a few months ago before his illness prevented him from working any longer.
Mr. Musselwhite was a member of Vinton Masonic Lodge #204, the Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies and Kazim Temple.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Frances G. Musselwhite; three sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas Patrick and Brenda Musselwhite, Richmond, Todd Andrew and Pam Musselwhite of Craig County, and William Michael Musselwhite of Botetourt County; one daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Michael Hicks of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Brian Musselwhite and wife Maria, Cheryl Murray and husband Chris, Aaron Musselwhite and Benjamin Hicks; one sister, Sadie Goodman, Saltville; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 15, at 11 a.m. at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Fred Fryar officiating. Interment
was in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The family suggests donations be made to Grace and Truth Baptist Church.

Roberts
Della S. Roberts, age 83, died Saturday, June 17, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Roberts was born in McDowell County, W.Va., and had lived most of her life in Smyth County. She worked at the Lee Memorial Hospital, the Smyth County Community Hospital, and retired from the Southwestern State Hospital.
She was a charter member of the Church of God of Prophecy having attended both Sugar Grove and Marion churches for over 55 years.
Surviving are five daughters, Ina Sue Johnson, Sylvia (Cricket) Rose, both of Marion, Wanda Armstrong, Atkins, Phyllis Arnold, Rural Retreat, and Nila James, Lorton; three sons, Douglas W. Roberts, Richmond, Calif., Arlie T. Roberts, Marion, and James Eddie Roberts, Rural Retreat; one sister, Dallas Giasglo, Alamance, N.C.; two brothers, Denny Stevenson and Marvin Stevenson, both of Marion; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; two special friends, Vicki St. Clair and Peggy Hayes.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 20, at 2 p.m. in Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Horton and the Rev. Bobby Baker officiating. Interment
was in the Slemp Cemetery.

Stuart
Calvin Lafayette Stuart, age 73, of Gary, W.Va., died Wednesday, June 7, 2000 in the Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, W.Va.
Mr. Stuart was born Feb. 22, 1927 in Sugar Grove, the son of the late Walter Stuart and Venie Gentry Stuart.
He was a resident of Gary, W.Va., for approximately 50 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from U.S. Steel No. 2 Coal Mine in Gary after many years of service and was a member of UMWA Local 7635. He was a member of the Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Gary where he faithfully served as a layman, superintendent of the Sunday School, usher and Kitchen Committee. He was a member of the Court of Calanthe No. 81 of Capels, W.Va., and the Knights of Pythia Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Y. Mathews Stuart; one son, Marc Stuart; and two sisters, Valerie Horton and Mamie Sharpe.
He is survived by one daughter, Candace Stuart of Gary, W.Va.; one brother, Harry Stuart and wife Elizabeth of Appalachia; two sisters, Stella Law and husband Dadford of Charlotte, N.C., and Ardella Mitchell of Baltimore, Md.; one aunt and uncle, Geneva and Lepolian McConnell of Bramwell, W.Va.; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, his church family and many friends.
Funeral services and burial were held in West Virginia.

Bowman
Amanda Lou Bowman, age 82, of Chilhowie, died Monday, June 19, 2000 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Ms. Bowman was a daughter of the late Arthur Bowman and Nancy Fowler Bowman. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Bowman and Walter Bowman. She taught in Smyth County schools, Martinsville schools and in Aruba.
She is survived by four sisters, Malissa Bowman, Chilhowie, Hattie "Jo" Sprinkle, and Lucy Blanton, both of Richmond, and Alice Mosley, Clayton, Ga.; one brother, John S. Bowman, Chilhowie; several nieces and nephews including Roger L. Bowman, Marion, Audrey Richardson, Sugar Grove, Mary Ann Aker, Atkins, Betty Jo Lennon, Richmond, George Blaine Bowman, Lawton, Okla., John Sanders Bowman and James Campbell Bowman, both of Roanoke; several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was conducted Thursday, June 22, at 6 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Blevins officiating. The family requests memorial donations be made to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.

Hillenburg
Sylvia Matilda Hillenburg, age 86, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000 in Francis Marion Manor.
Mrs. Hillenburg was the widow of Friel Hillenburg.
She is survived by two sisters, Bessie Martin, Marion, and Nannie Ruth Sawyers, Whitetop; one son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Judy Darnell, Marion; one brother, Leonard Darnell, Florida; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Friday, June 23, at 11 a.m. in Cole Cemetery in Whitetop with the Rev. Joe Powers officiating.

Sexton
J. Oscar Sexton, age 72, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Sexton was a native of Smyth County and was a member of the Falling Water Baptist Church. He was a member of Bricklayers and Allied Crafts Union Local #1.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Sexton; one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Bob Campbell of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Pat Sexton, Marion; two sisters, Shirley Wyatt, and Francis Shupe, both of Marion; three brothers, Staley Sexton, Wytheville, Wayne Sexton and Harvey Sexton, both of Marion; five grandchildren: Michael Sexton, Joe Campbell, Rob Campbell, Melissa Caronna and Teresa Baines; four great-grandchildren, Jessica Campbell, Ashley Campbell, Ryan Sexton and Steven Baines; several nieces and nephews.

followed in Roselawn Cemetery.
