Helen J. Thody
Helen J. Thody, formerly of Mica Hill Road in Durham, died on January 4 at High View Health Care Center in Middletown. She was 98.
Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, she was a member of the Church of the Epiphany in Durham, where she lived since 1917. She is survived by three sons, William Thody of Estero, Florida; Robert of Thody of Durham; and Amil Thody of Los Lunas, New Mexico; a daughter, Helen Hepp of High Springs, Florida; two sisters, Alice Loveland of Durham and Mildred Quinn of Florida; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, William H. Thody; a brother, Alfred Banta, Jr; and a sister, Marion Clark, died earlier.
The funeral was on January 9, with the burial following at Mica Hill Cemetery in Durham. Donations may be sent to the Durham Volunteer Ambulance Corps., PO Box 207, Durham or the Church of the Epiphany, Main Street, Durham.
Simon S. Levis
Simon Stanley Levis, 80, formerly of Cedar Street, Rockfall, husband of the late Claire (Mikulski) Levis, died Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at High View Health Care Center.
He was born in Middlefield, son of the late Simon and Margaret (Bray) Levis. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy-Coast Guard. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Lyman Gunsight Corporation as a tool grinder operator. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Middlefield-Rockfall Post. He leaves a sister, Marie Notarangelo of Rockfall; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Pearl Hubbard; a brother, Paul Levis; and a half-brother, Edward Roberts.
The funeral was January 5 at St. Colman Church in Middlefield. Burial will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery in Middlefield. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Colman Care and Share Program, 145 Hubbard Street, Middlefield, Connecticut 06455.
Rebecca Bailey
Rebecca Ann Bailey of Cross Street, Middletown, died Tuesday at Hartford Hospital. She was 34.
She was born in Middletown and was a graduate of Quinnipiac University. She is survived by her parents, James F. Bailey of Durham and Helen Jackson Bailey of Middletown; a sister, Pamela Bushnell of Durham; a grandmother, Adele Jackson of Middletown; and one niece.
A memorial service was held at the United Churches of Durham. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.
Susan A. Clarke
Susan A. Clarke of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, died November 18 at the age of 96. She is survived by one sister, Helen Knickerbocker of Middlefield, and several nieces and nephews, including Susan Leining of Durham and Donald Knickerbocker of North Haven. Funeral service was held in St. Stephen and burial will be in the spring.
Bernice Sadlowski
Bernice R. Rzasa Sadlowski of Rockfall died on January 7 at Middlesex Hospital. She was 88.
Born in Derby, she was employed by the Middletown Press prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary, St. Mary Post. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Sadlowski and a daughter, Gloria Sadlowski. Daughter Barbara died previously.
The funeral was held on January 10. Burial is in the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown.

Donovan Jessie Jones, infant son of Jennifer Dusablon and David Jones Jr. of Middlefield, died Thursday, January 11, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden.

Katherine (Daly) Bowe, 95, of Sand Hill Road, formerly of Wallingford, died Monday, January 15, 2001, at the Highview Health Care Center in Middletown.

Harry I. Dougherty Sr., 73, of 19 Rosemary Court, husband of the late Virginia (Pinkham) Dougherty, died Wednesday, January 17, at Middlesex Hospital.

Carl Zawacki, 58, of Maple Street, Rockfall section, died Friday, January 19, at Middlesex Hospital. He was born in Middletown, son of the late Benjamin and Mary (Ogorzalek) Zawacki. He had been employed by the Rockfall Garage and formerly by Raymond Engineering.

Cleveland N. Stannard
Cleveland "Billy" N. Stannard of South End Avenue in Durham died on February 6 at his home. He was 77.
Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Cleveland and Lucy (Austin) Stannard. He had been owner/operator of Stannard Landscaping in Durham. He was a member of the Exchange Club, Lions Club, honorary director of the Durham Fair Association, honorary member of the Durham Fire Department, volunteer for the Durham Ambulance Corps, Auxiliary State Police, active with the Durham Little League, as well as being a recent World War II graduate of CRHS.
Besides his wife, Cecelia (Pehota) Stannard, he is survived by a son, John W. Stannard of Alaska; a daughter, Suzanne Stannard-Collins of Durham; a brother, Elwin Stannard of Durham; a sister, Marjorie Johnson of Portland; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Nelson; two brothers, Charles and Theodore Stannard; and a sister, Jeanette Smallwood.
The funeral will be on Saturday, February 10, at 11AM at the United Churches of Durham. Marjorie Blake Crosby, formerly of Durham, died Sunday, January 14, in Canton, Georgia. She was 76.
Albert H. van Woerden
Albert H. van Woerden, 76, formerly of Lyman Road, Middlefield, died Monday, January 29, at High View Health Care in Middletown.
Born in The Hague, Netherlands, son of the late Arie and Jacoba M. (van der harst) van Woerden, he had lived in Middlefield since 1969. He was employed by Lyman Farms retiring in 1995.
He is survived by one son and his wife, Johann A. and Janie L. van Woerden Sr. of Middlefield; two daughters and their husbands, Katharina M. "Karin" and Robert Thody Jr. of Durham, and Marianne H. "Heidi" and Erwin Wimler of Durham; two sisters, Ine Van der Ende and Reit den Haan, both of the Netherlands; and six grandchildren, Shanoen and Johann A. van Woerden Jr., David and Kimberly Thody, and Lisa and Michael Wimler.

H. J. Dodenhoff Jr.
Henry Joseph Dodenhoff Jr. of Woodland Heights, Middlefield died Monday, January 26, at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. He was 83.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY and was a US Coast Guard veteran of World War II. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company employed him before he retired. He was a member of the AARP Middlefield Chapter, the VFW Middlefield-Rockfall Post 10362 and a volunteer firefighter for Glenwood Landing NY. He was also a former Middlefield constable and taught in the religious education program at St. Colmans Church in Middlefield.
He is survived by his wife, Regina Conigland Dodenhoff; three sons, Henry J. Dodenhoff III, and Robert M. Dodenhoff of Middletown and Edward F.X. Dodenhoff of Valrico, Florida; and six grandchildren. Burial was in the State Veterans’ Cemetery in Middletown.

Diane (McCarter) Tomporowski, 48, of Clem Court, Durham, beloved wife of Edward Tomporowski, died Friday, February 3, at Hartford Hospital. She was born in Milford, a daughter of Betty (Cameron) McCarter of Durham and the late Raymond McCarter. She was also predeceased by a sister, Linda Maroney.

Sammy Kennedy
Mr. Sammy Kennedy, (74) Pittsfield, MA died Tuesday, February 27 at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Camden AL on April 15, 1926, he was a son of the late Sam and Ruth Cannon Kennedy. He attended schools in Alabama and had resided in Pittsfield for the past 54 years. He married his wife, the former Emma Manzi of Pittsfield on January 27, 1947. He was employed as a meter reader for the Berkshire Gas Company for 25 years, retiring in 1994. He had also worked at one time for the former Bessie Clarke’s for several years. Mr. Kennedy was a member of the Second Congregational Church, an ordained deacon at the church, a church moderator, a member of the board of trustees for the church, a member of the church choir, the men’s fellowship club. Mr. Kennedy was also a member of the Berkshire Association of United Congregational Churches, a delegate of the Massachusetts Conference to United Congregational Churches, a member of the Church and Ministry Committee. He was a member of the Prince Hall Masons, the Berkshire Gas Union Retired Employees Association; he was involved in both bible study groups at his church. Mr. Kennedy was an usher at Tanglewood for several years, and was active in the City Democratic party, a member of Ken’s Bowling Association, a former Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader, a volunteer at the Christian Center, a coach for the YMCA church basketball league. He was a wonderful husband and father. Besides his wife of Pittsfield, Mr. Kennedy also leaves five sons, "the Kennedy boys;" Samuel G. Kennedy of Boston, MA, Richard D. Kennedy, of Middlefield CT, Reginald G. Kennedy of Dover DE, Marvin E. Kennedy of Springfield MA and Mark C. Kennedy of West Springfield MA; two brothers, James R. Kennedy, of Lansing MI, David C. Kennedy of Battle Creek, MI; five sisters, Ruth Macintosh of Mobile AL, Sally Williams, Adele Hicks and Magdeline Patton of Tuskegee AL, and Katie Adams-Goines of Charlotte NC, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Valerie R. Brown
Valerie R. Wentworth (Evans) Brown, 77, wife of Dr. J. Good Brown, died Wednesday, February 21, at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, NH with her loving daughters by her side.
Born in Middletown on March 12, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Nathan W. and Gladys (Robins) Wentworth.
She resided in Haddam Neck section of Haddam and Middle Haddam section of East Hampton before moving to New Hampshire in 1977. She was a member of Altrusa International, Haddam Neck Congregational Church and an associate member of the Haverhill Church. She taught Sunday school and was a 4-H leader. She was an avid reader and enjoyed and was knowledgeable in all types of music. Her gardens were a great joy to her, and she rejoiced in sharing her plants with anyone who asked.
She served as postmaster of Middle Haddam, being the first postmaster appointee of former Postmaster General Benjamin F. Bailar in 1975. She is a direct descendant of two colonial governors of New England, one of whom, John Wentworth, was the last governor of New Hampshire appointed by British King George III.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three children and spouses, Valerie Evans Fletcher of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Sydney Evans Mintz and her husband, William, of Middlefield; and Timothy Wentworth Evans and his wife, Elizabeth of East Haddam; eight grandchildren, Kenneth and Scott Maggi, Daren Fletcher, Kristen (Kruger) Footit, Keri (Kruger) Milbrecht, Sandra Mintz, Chelsea and Casey Evans; 14 great-grandchildren; her step-children and spouses, Winona and Richard Coombs of Glastonbury; Leota and Lee West of Mathews, Virginia; and Drs. Juanita and Joseph Millerick of Branford; her sister, Natalie Batchelder of Gooding, Idaho; and twin brothers, Warren Wentworth of Portland and Donald Wentworth of Gresham, Oregon; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Howard Buell Evans.

Pamela Grace Damroth of Lakeview Place, Middlefield, died Wednesday, April 18 [2001], at home. She was 56.
She was born in Astoria, NY. She was a member of St. Pius X Church and was employed by the state Department of Social Services.
She is survived by her father, Edward N. Jones; a son, Christopher Nicklas of Vernon; a daughter, Karen Dalton of Redwood City, CA; two brothers, James M. Jones of Arkansas and Edward T. Jones of Middlefield; a sister, Sally A. McGahey of Forked River, NJ; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Burial was in St. Sebastian Cemetery, Middlefield.
