LONGENECKER, ABRAM K., lifelong farmer
Abram K. Longenecker, 89, of Mount Hope Church Home, 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, formerly of 695 West Lexington Road, Lititz, Pennsylvania died Friday evening, December 7, 2001 at Mount Hope Church Home of natural causes following a brief illness. Abram had been a resident of the home since August 2000.
Born in Penn Township, Abram was the son of the late Abram H. and Mabel Keller Longenecker.
He was married to Harriet Strickler Longenecker, who died January 1977.
A life long farmer, Abram worked on his family farm, which was located at 695 West Lexington Road, Lititz until retiring in 1987. He then worked as a laborer for Green Acres Nursery.
Abram was a member of White Oak Church of the Brethren in Manheim.
Abram enjoyed gardening.
Born in Penn Township, Abram was the son of the late Abram H. and Mabel Keller Longenecker.
Surviving are two sons, A. Kenneth, married to Pamela Gardner Longenecker, Trappe, Maryland, and Glenn S., married to Linda R. Yundt Longenecker of Manheim; three daughters, Shirley A., married to LeRoy M. Oberholtzer; and Betty J., married to Robert M. Oberlin, both of Manheim; and Phyllis L., married to Thomas W. Althouse of Myerstown; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one step-grandson; a brother, Elmer K., married to Mildred Longenecker of Lititz; and three sisters, Martha K. Longenecker and Mary K. Longenecker, both of Lititz, and Nancy, married to Harold W. Diffenderfer of Manheim.
Abram was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Longenecker.

MARKS, VIRGINIA, 85, phone operator
Virginia S. Marks, 85, of Brethren Village, formerly of 209 Valleybrook Drive, died Sunday, December 9, 2001 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness.
A homemaker, Virginia was a telephone operator early in her life, working for the former Raymark Industries in Manheim and the Denver and Ephrata Telephone Company.
Virginia graduated from the former Manheim High School and attended Lancaster Business College.
Virginia spent 10 years as a volunteer for Lancaster area Meal on Wheels.
Virginia was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Manheim.
She enjoyed needlework and was an avid bridge player.
Born in Manheim, Virginia was the daughter of the late George F. and Lillie Harmes Seabold.
Virginia was married to Foster N. Marks, who died in 1990.
Surviving are a son, G. Thomas, married to Deborah L. Clark Marks of Lititz; a granddaughter; and four great-grandsons.
Virginia was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Shelly.

MIKOTA, ELLEN D., 48, was biology teacher
Ellen D. Mikota, 48, of 227 East Gramby Street, Manheim, died Saturday evening, November 24, 2001 at Lancaster General Hospital after a long illness.
Ellen taught biology in Irwin and volunteered in the junior high school science department at Manheim Central School District.
Ellen was a member of Calvary Assembly of God church in Lititz. Earlier, Ellen taught Sunday school at First Assembly of God Church in Lancaster.
A 1970 graduate of Manheim Central High School, Ellen received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science from Shippensburg University.
Ellen was interested in all kinds of gardening and was in charge of Shippensburg University’s greenhouse program for two years while she completed her studies. Ellen enjoyed playing the organ and clarinet.
Born in Queens, New York, Ellen was the daughter of Charlotte Arndts Mikota, with whom she lived, and the late Stephen Mikota.
Surviving besides her mother are a sister, Judith A., married to Dennis Ault of Winterspring, Florida, a niece and a nephew.

Leah K. Probst, 87, Strasburg Homemaker
Leah K. Probst, age 87, of 214 West Main Street, Strasburg, PA died Saturday, November 10, 2001 at Lancaster General Hospital following a brief illness.
Leah was the widow of Scott Probst who died September 3, 1994. She was born in Paradise township the daughter of the late David F. and Emma Katherine Groff McGuigan.
She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Paradise and a life member of Strasburg Fire Company Auxiliary. A homemaker, she enjoyed quilting, gardening, and her grandchildren.
Leah is survived by three daughters, Margaret L. married to Willis C. Lefever, Jr. of Strasburg, Norma J. Shenberger of Strasburg, and Darlene K. married to Ellsworth Hard of Lancaster; two sisters, Reba R. Singer of New Holland and Eva M. Miller of Strasburg; six grandchildren and forteen great grandchildren.
Leah was preceded in death by two brothers, John G. McGuigan and David G. McGuigan; and a grandson, David K. Lefever.

RAMBLER, RUTH N., 62, of Lancaster
Ruth N. Rambler, 62, formerly of Lancaster Junction, died unexpectedly of natural causes Tuesday evening, November 13, 2001 at Conestoga View, where she lived since 1984.
Miss Rambler attended The Choices Program of the United Disabilities Services of Lancaster and was a member of Mental Health Mental Retardation Association of Lancaster.
Ruth was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manheim.
Ruth was involved with many activities at Conestoga View. She enjoyed pets and music and collected stuff animals.
Born in Penn Township, Ruth was the daughter of the late Calvin W. and E. Marie Strickler Rambler.
Surviving are two brothers, Daniel, married to Jean Rambler of Manheim, and Robert E., address unknown; and a sister, Helen, married to Emmert Will of Millsboro, Delaware.
Ruth was preceded in death by a brother, John H. Rambler.

RANKIN, J. MARTIN, Purchasing Manager
J. Martin “Marty” Rankin, 49, of 67 North Clay Street, Manheim, died Wednesday evening, October 31, 2001 at home after a long illness.
Marty was the purchasing manager of Lift-All Company Inc., in Landisville from March 1991 until his illness.
A 1970 graduate of McCaskey High School, Marty earned an accounting degree from Franklin and Marshall College in 1984.
Marty attended East Fairview Church of the Brethren in Manheim.
A U.S. Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War, Marty served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger.
Marty was an avid Manheim Barons fan, enjoyed golf and baseball, played on various county softball teams and was a participant in the Schreiber Pediatric softball tournaments.
Born in Lancaster, Marty was the son of John H. and Dorothy Stetter Rankin of Lancaster.
Marty was married four years to Tina M. Balmer Shertzer Rankin.
Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are three sons, Keith G. and Christopher M., both of Lancaster, and Bradley M. of Columbia; a daughter, Angela M. Shertzer of Manheim; and a sister, Jill L., married to Dennis L. Lucas of Columbia.

SPANGLER, DOROTHY M., age 81
Dorothy M. Spangler, age 81, of 841 Conestoga Avenue, Manheim, PA died following a lengthy illness Friday morning, November 2, 2001 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, PA where she resided since August.
She was the widow of Herbert R. Spangler who died in 1973. Born in Manheim, PA she was the daughter of the late Henry C. and Dora Henny Smith.
Dorothy retired in 1998 from Weis Markets in Manheim where she was employed as a deli clerk for over 15 years. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church in Manheim. She was a lifetime member of the Elstonville Sportsmen’s Association and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post #5956, Manheim.
She enjoyed crocheting, making many afghans.
Surviving are a daughter, Doris J. married to Earl A. Shenenberger of Lititz; a son, Rodney L. married to Mary Anna Wilkes Spangler of Columbia, SC; four grandchildren; and a companion Elwood “Jim” Sites of Manheim.
Dorothy was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Gibble.

CARL D. STOOTS, STRASBURG, PA
Carl D. Stoots, age 62, of 24 East Main Street, Strasburg, PA died at Thursday afternoon, December 6, 2001 at Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster PA after a brief illness.
He celebrated 43 years of marriage this past November with his wife Linda L. Hummel Stoots. Carl was born in Connersville, Indiana the son of the late Ralph F. and Velma White Stoots Wells.
For the past five years he was employed as an estimator for Scenic Ridge Construction, Gordonville, PA. Prior to that he owned D&E Construction Company.
Carl was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg where he served as a trustee and deacon. An avid golfer, he was a member of Meadia Heights Golf Club, Lancaster. Carl was a former member of the Strasburg Boro Planning Commission.
He was a member and Past Master of the Free & Accepted Masons Lodge #175 and Past Patron of Order of Eastern Star # 543, both of Greensboro, Indiana.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Cynthia L. married to John P. Shank of Lititz, PA; two grandchildren; two brothers, Walter L. married to Martha J. Barkdull Stoots of New Castle, Indiana and Philip Dwayne married to Susan Myer Stoots of Indianapolis, Indiana; three sisters, Patricia J. married to Gilbert Hudson and Joyce M. married to Gary Plank both of Knightstown, Indiana, and Sharon R. married to Gary Hudson of Lewisville, Indiana.
Carl was preceded in death by a son, Jay D. Stoots.
