Marion E. Shirk

Marion E. Shirk, 78, of 2063 Miller Road East Petersburg, Pa. formerly of 170 Home Lane Landisville, Pa. died unexpectedly Friday at her son’s home of natural causes.
Born in Rapho Twp., Pa. she was the daughter of the late Harold & Edna Conrad Achey. Her late husband Vernon R. Shirk died in 1975. Marion worked for the former Consumer’s Packing Co. in Lancaster for over 25 years as a machine operator. Later she worked for the Exide Corp. in Lampeter as a machine operator retiring in 1988.
Surviving are two sons: Richard V. husband of Arlene Shirk of Mount Joy Stephen R. husband of Eleanor Shirk with whom she resided. 7 Grandchildren & 7 Great Grandchildren 4 brothers: Ray, Ken & Ted Achey all of Manheim, Russell Achey of Lancaster. 3 Sisters: Sara Henry, Doris Brubaker and Josephine Shelley all of Manheim. She was predeceased by a daughter Carol Bauer, and a sister Anna Geib.
She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Landisville. She had formerly been a choir member and Sunday school teacher. Her favorite past times included crocheting, sewing and traveling.
Funeral Services will be Monday at 11:00 A.M. from the Buch Funeral Home 21 Market Sq. Manheim, Pa. with The Reverend Richard Whitesel officiating. Interment
in Ruhl's United Methodist Church Cemetery Rapho Twp., Pa. Friends may call at the Buch Funeral Home on Monday from 10-11 A.M.

Carl I. Shirk, 70, of 498 Rife Run Road Manheim, PA, died on October 11, 2004 at Heart of Lancaster Medical Center, Lititz, PA.
Born in Brickerville, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph K. and Mary Strohm Shirk. He was married for over 49 years to Fay Kulp Shirk. Retiring in 1996, he worked for over 40 years as a machine operator for the former Woodstream, Lititz, PA. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed working on cars.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Carl Thomas Shirk, William Lee Shirk, James David Shirk, all of Manheim; two daughters: Peggy Jane Shirk, Lori Ann Shirk, both of Manheim; four grandchildren: Brandy Kirsch, Rickey Engle Jr., Tiffany Shirk, Dalton E. Shirk; four brothers and five sisters.
A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Middle Creek Brethren Cemetery, Ephrata Township, PA.
John Hensel Shirk

John Hensel Shirk, 89, of 544 North Penryn Road Manheim, and formerly of 125 East Ferdinand Street Manheim, died Monday, February 7, 2005 at the Pleasant View Retirement Community Manheim, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Quarryville, he was the son of the late John M. and Clara Althouse Shirk. For over forty years Hensel worked for the United States Postal Service through the Manheim Post Office as a rural mail carrier. He was the husband of Mildred Shirker Shirk who died in January 1991. Hensel was a member of St. Paul’s United Church Of Christ Manheim, where he served as an usher. He also was a member of the Washington Masonic Lodge # 286 Quarryville. Shirk received a Bachelors Of Science Degree in Education from Millersville State College. His interests included hunting and golf.
Surviving are two daughters, Tamson J. Kacsur of Fort Pierce, Florida, Penelope L. wife of Dale S. Stauffer of Manheim, a son, John M. husband of Mary Lou Hershey Shirk of Manheim, five grandchildren, and three great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Bryan and one grandson.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Buch Funeral Home 21 Market Square Manheim, on Friday, February 11, 2005 at 2:00 PM with Pastor John F. Dieterly officiating. Interment

Albert W. “ Tiny” Barto, 77, of 6 North Charlotte Street Manheim, died Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Pleasant View Retirement Community Manheim after a recent illness.
Born in Manheim, he was the son of the late Irvin N. and Elizabeth Weller Barto. For over thirty years Tiny was employed for the United States Postal Service as a clerk for the Manheim Post Office retiring in 1987. During World War II he served as a Sergeant in the U. S. Army 101st Infantry, 26th division and took part of the Battle of the Bulge. He was the husband of Anna Mae Hammer Barto and they would have observed their 55th wedding anniversary on this Friday, April 9th. A member of St. Paul’s United Church Of Christ Manheim he served on the property board of the church. Other memberships included, Manheim V. F. W. Post 5956, the Ammon K. Gibble American Legion Post 419, and the Germania Band Club all of Manheim, American Postal Workers Union of the AFL CIO, and the Manheim Historical Society. He was an avid Philadelphia Sports Fan, enjoyed golf and Polka Dancing.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four daughters, Kathy Jo Adams of Clemmons, North Carolina, C. Roxann married to Ken Long of Manheim, Beth Holly “ Teddy “ married to Miles Bolton of Cincinnati, Ohio, Marjorie D. married to Rick Barry of Moundsville, West Virginia, two sons, John R. married to Kim L. Musser Barto and Steven C. married to Faith D. Cassel Barto all of Manheim, nine grandchildren, two brothers,Calvin married to Ruth Barto of Manheim and Carl married to Edna Barto of Lancaster. Tiny was preceded in death by seven brothers, Myron, Irvin Jr., Lewis, Dale, Daniel, Medwin, and Clair Barto and four sisters, Ruth Graybeal, Mildred Leese, Louise Grube, and Edith Felsburg.

Anna H. Snavely, 86, formerly of Manheim, Pa, died of natural causes on Monday morning April 5, 2004 at the Mennonite Home, Lancaster, Pa, following a brief illness. She was a resident of the Mennonite Home for over 25 years.
Born in Penn Township, Pa, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Stella Hershey Snavely. She worked on her uncle’s farm in Penn Township, Pa for many years. Prior to that she worked 19 years in the shipping department for the former Noggles Garment Factory, Manheim, Pa. She was a member of the Kauffman’s Mennonite Church, Manheim, Pa and taught Sunday school at the church for many years. Her interest included crocheting.
Last of her immediate family, she is survived by nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 11:00 AM at the Oreville Chapel, Mennonite Home 1520 Harrisburg Pike Lancaster, Pa. Interment

Janet L. Knowles, 67, of 2217 Seitz Drive Lancaster, PA, formerly of Baltimore, Maryland and Kalamazoo, Michigan, died on Sunday, April 11, 2004 at Essa Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster, PA following a lengthy illness.
Born in Lancaster, PA, she was the daughter of the late J. Lester and Rosanna Rittenhouse Kreider. She was married to Colin L. Knowles, they observed their 45th wedding anniversary in November 2003. She was a Registered Nurse for the John Hopkins University Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland and also worked for the Quality Assurance Department at Community Hospital of Lancaster, PA for many years. A 1954 graduate of McCaskey High School, Lancaster, PA, and a graduate of Borgess Hospital School of Nursing, Kalamazoo, Michigan. She attended the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Lancaster, PA. She was an avid fan of the Baltimore Colts, Ravens, and Orioles, as well as the University of Maryland Football and Basketball teams. Mrs. Knowles enjoyed reading and had a love for all animals, especially cats and dogs.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons: Brian T. married to Cindy Huber Knowles of Baltimore, Maryland, Douglas K. Knowles of Joppatowne, Maryland, Richard M. Knowles of Lancaster, PA; a daughter: Debra S. Knowles of Joppatowne, Maryland; a brother: Donald Kreider of Boston, Massachusetts; and a sister: Rosanna married to John F. Buch of Manheim, PA. She was preceded in death by brother: Richard Kreider.

Glenn R. Bachman, 65, of 6380 Lemon Street East Petersburg, PA, died on Saturday, April 10, 2004 at Essa Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster following a lengthy illness.
Born in Cleona, Pa, he was the son of Sallie A. Bomberger Bachman of Brethren Village and the late G. Lester Bachman. He was married to Beverly Hollinger Bachman, they celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary in September of 2003. He was a self-employed salesman for Snap-On Tools in Lancaster County, working from 1961 until his illness. Mr. Bachman was a 1958 graduate of Hempfield High School. A very active member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, East Petersburg, PA, he served on church council, property committee, planning committee for remodeling, an usher, and participated with his wife as youth group leaders. He was a member of the Landis Valley Museum, East Petersburg Rotary; where he received the Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary International and a charter member of the East Petersburg Historical Society. He volunteered at the Lancaster General Hospital and helped with the Boy Scouts Troup #3, East Petersburg. His interest included hunting, fishing, gardening, remodeling, and traveling with his wife in the United States and overseas.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son: Gregory M. married to Yvonne Greenly Bachman of East Petersburg; a daughter: Tracy B. married to Todd A. Sillaman of Mount Joy; four Grandchildren; and two brothers: Richard married to Joyce Bachman of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Donald married to Barbara Bachman of Snyder County.

Catharine A. “Caddy “ Shank, 81, of Sporting Hill, PA., died on Thursday morning at her daughter’s home 60 North Mount Vernon Road Manheim, PA., following a brief illness.
Born in Manheim, she was the daughter of the late Charles N. and Ann Sophia Krall Adair. Caddy worked at the former Manheim Glove Factory for many years. Her husband, Daniel G. Shank died on September 29, 1987. She was known for her crocheting, and enjoyed playing the piano. Caddy was devoted to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving are three daughters, M. Jean married to Daniel S. Rambler and Alice married to Wilbur Gibble both of Manheim, and Louise married to Rufus F. Zellers of Ironville, two sons, D. George married to Linda Quesenberry Shank and K. Richard Shank both of Manheim, fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, two brothers, Bill married to Betty Adair of New Holland, Donald married to Arlene Adair of Manheim, a sister, Nancy married to Ken Lishman of Manheim. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bud and Robert Adair and three sisters, Mena Adair, Ruth Adair, and Mary Ann Wettig.

Paul R. Donough

Paul R. Donough, 75, formerly of Manheim, died at his home at 13 Penn Valley Village Lititz, PA on Friday, April 16, 2004 after a long illness.
Born in Palmyra, he was the son of the late Henry L. and Carrie Groy Donough. Paul was last employed by Weis Markets, Manheim for fourteen years where he worked as a clerk and was known for being Santa at the store during the Holiday Season. An Auctioneer, Paul was owner and operator of Grandma and Grandpa’s Auction located in Sporting Hill for many years. From 1949 to 1984 Paul worked on many dairy farms throughout the area. He was the first recipient of the Future Farmers of America Keystone Farmer and Star Farmer Degrees given to a student in the state of Pennsylvania. He was the husband of Mae K. Mase Donough and they observed their 55th wedding anniversary in January of this year. He was a member of East Fairview Church of the Brethren Manheim and a former member of Midway Church Of The Brethren in Lebanon. A graduate of Reich World Wide School of Auctioneering in Iowa, Paul also graduated from South Lebanon High School in 1947. He was a former member of the Manheim Lions Club.

March Donough all of Manheim, Steven J. married to Lucinda Wilson Donough of Port Royal, PA; sixteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a brother, Harold married to Elsie Donough of Renovo, PA; and a sister, Betty Jane Donough. Donald H. Stroud, 78, of 562 West Sunhill Road Manheim, PA; died Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at Masonic Village Elizabethtown, PA. following a long illness.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Bertram and Amanda Hoke Stroud. For 38 years Don worked as a maintenance mechanic for the Fuller Company Manheim retiring in 1990; previous he worked for four years as a tin-smith specializing in roofing construction for companies in the Manheim and Quentin areas. He was the husband of Doris Summy Stroud and they observed their 54th wedding anniversary in April of this year. Don was a member of St. Paul’s United Church Of Christ Manheim. A 1944 graduate of the former Cornwall High School. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team. An excellent wood worker he was known for his wood-turning and furniture making, other interests included, Jig-Saw and Cross Word Puzzles and traveling through 48 states in the U.S.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Doris Stroud married to Jonathan D. Mearig of Manheim, a son, Robert D. Stroud of Lancaster, six grandchildren, three brothers, Bertram Stroud of Cornwall, PA., Carl O. Stroud of Pensacola, Florida and Richard married to Gudrun Stroud of Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Anna H. Lefever, 92, of 607 Hearthstone Lane Mount Joy, and formerly of Manheim, died Thursday evening, May 13, 2004 at Hearthstone Manor Mount Joy after a brief illness.
Born in Millersville, she was the daughter of the late Christian and Anna S. Herr Brubaker. She was a homemaker and in her early days helped her husband on the family farm in Rapho Township. She was known for designing cakes for special events, weddings and birthdays for 40 years. She was the wife of the late Robert L. Lefever, who died February 21, 1980. An active member of Kauffman’s Mennonite Church Manheim. Her interests included flower and vegetable gardening and home sewing; an accomplished seamstress she made her own clothing.
Surviving are four daughters, Ella B. married to Dr. Galen Peters of Greenville, Illinois, Florence B. Lefever and Mary L. married to Leroy Beitzel both of Manheim, Vera B. married to Raymond Kurtz of Shoemakersville, two sons, Martin B. married to Barbara Lefever of Paramus, New Jersey, and James B. married to Delania Lefever of Manheim, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a brother, Christian married to Martha Brubaker of New Holland. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ella Brubaker and Mary Hess and a brother, Abram Brubaker.

Betty J. Reiner, 81, of 44 Donaldson Road Tremont, PA., and formerly of Manheim, PA., died Saturday evening, May 15, 2004 following a lengthy illness at the Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center Tremont, PA., where she was a resident for the past 16 years.
Born in Muir, PA., she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Annie Carl Lyons. Betty worked at Datcon Industries East Petersburg for many years, previous she was employed at Noggles Garment Factory, Manheim and Donegal Industries, Mount Joy, PA. She was the wife of the late Daniel C. Reiner who died in 1952. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church Manheim, and in her early years was the custodian of the church. She was devoted to her family.
Surviving are a daughter, Glenna M. married to Jay R. Bell of Manheim, a grandson, Brian S. married to Linda Kohlweiler Bell of Norristown, PA., and a granddaughter, Stacy L. Bell of York, PA. She was preceded in death by a sister, Arlene Morgan.

Mary M. Sahm, 78, of Lititz, PA, formerly of Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, PA, died on Friday, May 28, 2004 at the United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz, after a long illness.
Born in Oregon, Manheim Township, PA, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mazie Landis Shreiner. She was the wife of Jay H. Sahm Sr. and they observed their 56th wedding anniversary in August of last year. Retiring in 1987, she worked 14 years at the Weis Market Store in Manheim, and was a Teachers Aid and in the food service department for the Manheim Central School District at Mastersonville Elementary School. Following her graduation from high school she was a floral designer for several flower shops in the Lancaster County Area. Since 1955, she was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manheim, and active in the adult Sunday school class. A 1943 graduate of Manheim Township High School, she enjoyed traveling, flower and vegetable gardening, cooking, and making braided rugs.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons: Dr. J. Harold married to Georgette Hart Sahm of Glassboro, New Jersey, J. Michael Sahm of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; a daughter: Kathleen A. Wilson of Page, Arizona; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four sisters: Ida married to Allen Risser of Leola, PA, Anna married to Stuart Rentschler of Lancaster, PA, Helen married to James Benner of Lansing, Michigan, and Florence married to Ernest Ober of Mechanicsburg, PA. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Alma Bradley and Mazie Shreiner.

Grace N. Frey, 82, formerly of 1743 Ridge Ave. East Petersburg, PA., died Wednesday evening, June 2, 2004 at Oak Leaf Manor North 2901 Harrisburg Pike Landisville, after a brief illness.
Born in Millersville, she was the daughter of the late Amos and Barbara Harnish Musselman. For twenty-five years she was employed in the food service department for the Hempfield School District at the East Petersburg Elementary School retiring in 1980. She was the wife of George W. Frey who died on January 6, 1990. A member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church East Petersburg, she was active with the church group, Women of Grace and was a pianist for the church for many years. Her memberships included; the East Petersburg Historical Society, the East Petersburg Chapter of AARP, the Silver Single Club of Lancaster County. Grace served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a Girl Scout Brownie Leader for the East Petersburg Area. While at Oak Leaf Manor Grace sang in the Oak Leaf Chorus and organized a walking club. Her other interests included playing cards and flowers.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen L. Frey married to David Blevins of East Petersburg, a son, Richard P. married to Diane Markley Frey of Manheim, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and one brother, Paul married to Mickey Musselman of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Clyde Musselman M.D. and one sister, Mae Kline.

Janice P. Gerhart, 48, of 86 North Charlotte Street Manheim died on Monday, November 14, 2005 at the Mt. Hope Church Home, Manheim following a lengthy illness.
Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin S. and Betty I. Shonk Peters. Janice worked several years as a dietary aide for the Mennonite Home, Lancaster. A 1975 graduate of Manheim Central High School, she was also attending the Manheim Church of God. Her interests included reading and puzzles.
Surviving is her mother Verna L. Sauder Peters of Manheim, a sister, Elaine S. Peters of Manheim, two brothers, Clyde husband of Eunice Sensenig Peters of Manheim and Mark S. husband of Dianna Peters of Lititz.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from Hernley Mennonite Church 746 Lebanon Road Manheim, PA on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 11:00 AM with Pastor David Shaffer officiating. Interment
in the adjoining church cemetery. There will be a public viewing at the church on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
