Vernon H. "Fritz" Shire

Vernon H. “Fritz” Shire, 78, of 144 Fruitville Pike, Manheim and formerly of 514 Rambler Road Manheim, died peacefully at the Verterans Administration Medical Center, Lebanon, on Monday, November 14, 2005.
Born in Manheim, he was the son of the late David P. and Mae N. Shreiner Shire. Vernon was the husband of the late, Betty P. Balmer Shire who died in August of 1986. Vernon was the owner and operator of the former David P. Shire & Son Plumbing & Heating Company Manheim, for over twenty-five years. He also worked at his son’s restaurant “ The Cobblestone Restaurant “ York PA., for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. An avid bowler, Fritz was a member of the Manheim Church Bowling League. Other interests included hunting and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
Surviving is a son, Vernon H. “ Cork” Jr. husband of Linda M. Wheatley Shire of York, a daughter, Debra E. wife of Thomas R. Stewart of Manheim, five grandchildren, Vernon H. Shire, III, Mindy M. Ford, Heather Mae Shire, Brandon M. Stewart, and Keesha M. Hall, two step grandchildren, Douglas A. Shaffer and Lori A. Shaffer, five great grandchildren, Dane G. Hall, Aaron A. Hall, Emma G. Ford, Ariel Shaffer and Rachael Shaffer.

Katherine L. “Kit” Ditzler, 72, of 2671 Camp Road, Manheim died on Friday, November 18, 2005 at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center, Lititz after a brief illness.
Born in Colebrook, Lebanon County, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Mary Greiner Geib. Kit was the wife of the late Ralph S. Ditzler who died in 1975. Katherine was owner and operator of Deer Lick Camp Ground in Coudersport, PA from 1980-1983. Prior to that, Kit worked in the Textile Department for the former Raymark Industries, Manheim for 27 years. She attended the United Christian Church, Manheim. A member of the Raymark Industries 25 Year Club, she enjoyed gardening, playing cards, auctions, and spending time with her family.
Surviving is a daughter, Vicki Smith of Chicago, Illinois, a son, Michael husband of Diane Boyer Wright and a daughter, Donna Howard both of Manheim; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; five step children; two adopted sons; a sister, Christine L. Brady wife of John Brucker of Manheim; three brothers, G. Richard husband of Doris Geib, J. Kenneth husband of Gerry Geib, and Jere Lee Geib all of Manheim. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles W. Geib and a sister, Barbara M. Sides.

Steven B. Butzer, 49, of 270 Rapho Street, Manheim died unexpectedly of natural causes at the Baltimore-Washington Medical Center Glen Burnie, Maryland, on Saturday, November 19, 2005.
Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Jere G. Butzer, of Silver Springs and Joanne Warrick wife of George Warrick Jr. of Manheim. Steve was employed in the printing industry for over twenty years; presently working for Priority Systems Inc. of Harrisburg. He was the husband of Sandy J. Denny Butzer and they observed their 20th wedding anniversary in June of this year. He was of the United Methodist Faith. Steve had a passion for racing and served on the pit crew for many years at the Lanco Micro Sprint Racing located in Brickerville. His interests included playing the guitar, computers, history, and motorcycle riding.
Surviving in addition to his wife and parents, is a son, Steven B. Butzer, Jr. at home, step-son, Dennis L. Garman, Jr., Manheim and a step-daughter, Nicole L. wife of Lane A. Burkholder, Manheim, three grandchildren, Kaylee Garman, Carter & Grant Burkholder, maternal grandmother, Catharine Brubaker of Manheim, a sister, Melissa J. Butzer of Seabrook, Texas, a step-sister, Deanna Warrick, three step-brothers, Dale, Mark & Charles Warrick. He is preceded in death by a brother, Barry L. Butzer. Steve will be lovingly missed by his family and friends.

Martha H. Balmer, 101, of 1734 Lititz Pike, Lancaster died of natural causes on Monday, November 21, 2005 at Luther Acres, Lititz.
Born in Mastersonville, she was the daughter of the late Frank Roy and Etta Wall Zug. She was the wife of the late E. Roy Balmer who died on December 29, 1988. A homemaker, she also worked for the former Staley’s Silk Mill, Lancaster. Martha was the oldest member of Lititz Church of the Brethren. She was also a member of the Lancaster Bird Club and Silver Threads Club. Her interests included bird watching and sewing.
Surviving is a sister, Florence Linaweaver of the Mennonite Home and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Howard Anthony Tshudy, 27, beloved son of Craig and Mary Ann Stoltzfus Tshudy of 8 Silver Creek Road Lititz passed away instantly in an automobile accident on November 28, 2005.
He was a resident of Manheim during his school years and graduated from Manheim Central in 1997. He lived in Durango, Colo. for a year before returning to Lititz where he resided with his parents and his two dogs Brutis and Bella. He worked hard in the home building field for Rick Bomberger Framing Co. Howard enjoyed river rafting, playing poker, and having fun with his many friends and family. Howard will be missed by many.
Surviving in addition to his parents is a sister Bailey Tshudy at home, a maternal grandfather Martin L. Tshudy and his wife Martha of Lancaster, a maternal grandmother, Suzie Stoltzfus of Columbia, and many aunts, and cousins throughout the country.

Born in Mount Joy, she was the wife of Charles W. Zahm who died in 1968. Jeanne was a waitress at the former Town Tavern, East Petersburg.
Surviving is a daughter, Carol A. Shreves with whom she resided, a son, Raymond E. husband of Susan Zahm of Lititz; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald L. Zahm.

LeRoy W. Heisey, 86, of 25 Ridgewood Manor Manheim, formerly of Elizabethtown, died on Monday, December 5, 2005 at his residence following a brief illness.
Born in Milton Grove, he was the son of the late Alvin and Edna Koser Heisey. He was married 35 years to Frances Kennedy Heisey. LeRoy worked part-time as an egg packer for Pleasant View Farms, Manheim. Prior to that, he worked for Agway Feed Mill, Manheim and Kline’s Septic, Salunga. LeRoy was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WW II. A member of Bethel Baptist Church, Manheim, he sang in the church choir. His interests included gardening and farming.
Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Barry L. Sr. husband of Deborah Heisey of Mountville; two step sons, Tony R. Mullins at home, Kevin G. Johnson of Hampton, Virginia; two step daughters, J. Lynne wife of Gary Forry of Manheim and Connie L. Bollinger of Mountville; 18 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a brother, James Richard husband of Ethel Heisey of Mount Joy; five sisters, Mary Jean Sweigart of Rheems, Betty Marie Greiner of Manheim, Ellen Mae wife of Joe Wolgemuth of Mount Joy, Anna Martha Yeatts of Washington Boro, and Nancy Lou wife of Kenneth Erisman of Huntingdon. Grace B. Kauffman, 77, of 185 North Wolf Street Manheim died peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at the Essa Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster after a long illness.
Born in Penn Township, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mabel S. Baum Seifert. She was the wife of Edward R. Kauffman and they observed their 57th wedding anniversary in June of this year. Grace worked for several garment factories in the Lancaster County area and was employed for eight years at Donegal Industries Mount Joy. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Manheim for sixty-three years, and in her early years taught Sunday school. A 1948 graduate of the former Manheim High School, she was a member of Stiegel Roses Senior Citizens Group, Manheim. Her interests included flower gardening and knitting, she made many clothing items for the American Red Cross in Lancaster.
Surviving in addition to her husband is a son, Randy S. husband of Diane Mensch Kauffman of Lititz; two grandchildren, Adam F. and Naomi R. Kauffman; a brother, Clarence B. Seifert of Masonic Village, Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Seifert and a sister, Anna Mae Torrau.

George A. Scheuchenzuber, formerly of East Petersburg, PA., was born October 9, 1916 in Lancaster PA., passed away on December 4, 2005.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Joseph & Anna Kronthaller Scheuchenzuber, his sisters: Anna Schreck, Sophie Boas, Bertha, Rose and Mary Scheuchenzuber, his brothers: Joseph, Louis Scheuchenzuber and his daughter, Deloris Strange.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years Jane Devers Scheuchenzuber, his children: George & Florence Metzger Scheuchenzuber, Michael & Lucy Nemchenko Scheuchenzuber, Justin & Karen Buch Scheuchenzuber and Paul Scheuchenzuber, his grandchildren: George III, Juliana, David, April, James, Jason, Emily, Amy, and Austin, his great grandchildren: George IV, Anna and Michael, his sister: Dorothy Hince, and his brother: Louis Wittensoldner. George served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II he was self-employed for 56 years as owner of George's Barber Shop in Lancaster. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Lancaster. George will be remembered as someone who loved to shoot pool, dance, crab, and play cards.

Glenn H. Moore, 66, of 421 Thrush Drive Manheim formerly of Hillvalley, PA died on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at the Lancaster General Hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late Glenn and Myrtle Smith Moore. He was married 47 years to Shirley L. Seibert Moore. Glenn worked 5 years as supervisor of maintenance for the Fairfield Inn, Lancaster. Prior to that, he worked as a supervisor for 20 years at the former Raymark Industries, Manheim. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Manheim and the Manheim Masonic Lodge 587. Glenn enjoyed his grandchildren and Nascar Racing.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Glenn T. Moore of Towanda, Troy L. husband of Dorene Moore of Lititz; six grandchildren; a great grandson; a brother, Wilbur Moore of Mt. Patricia Elaine “Pat” Geisel, 68, formerly of 157 South Charlotte Street, Manheim died Friday, December 9, 2005 at Lancashire Hall Lancaster following a brief illness.
Born in Indiana, Pa., she was the daughter of Helen Foreman Schrecengost of Indiana, Pa. and the late Howard S. Schrecengost. She was the wife of the late James L. Geisel who died in 1979. Pat was a homemaker. She was a member of the Manheim VFW Post 5956 women’s auxiliary and served as the Americanism Chairman and patriotic instructor from 1998 to 2003.
She is survived by a son, James, husband of Alice Groff Geisel of Manheim, two grandchildren, Heather wife of Rodney Boll and Justin Root, one great grandson, Landon Boll, two brothers David, husband of Doris Schrecengost of Indiana Pa., Edward, husband of Doris Schrecengost of Virginia Beach and a sister Evelyn Joanne Updegraff of York, Pa. Pat was preceded in death by a sister Marilyn Jeanne Cooper and a brother Donald Schrecengost.

Charlotte L. Lamberson Harnish, 56 of 126 ½ East Gramby St. Manheim, PA., died Friday evening, December 5, 2003 at Essa Flory Hospice Center following a long term illness.
Born in Lancaster County she was the daughter of Darlene Smith Lamberson of Lancaster, and the late Clark E. Lamberson. For over twenty years she worked as a material handler for Alumax-Alcoa Lancaster plant working until her illness, previous Charlotte worked as a waitress for the Stock Yard Inn and the former Good’s Dairy Restaurant Lancaster. She was the wife of John C. Harnish and they observed their 20th wedding anniversary in June of this year. A graduate of Hempfield High School, Charlotte volunteered working for meals on wheels in the Lancaster area. She was involved with her family especially taking care of her grandchildren. Her interests included : quilting, crafts, traveling, reading, flower gardening, exploring nature’s surroundings, and visiting Delaware and Maryland beaches. She enjoyed motorcycle riding on her husband’s Harley and driving her Mustang convertible with the top down.
Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a son Brian K. married to Patricia L. Young Wanger of Lancaster, two step sons Jeff married to Renee Harnish of Lancaster and Jim Harnish of Manheim, a step daughter Kelli Harnish of Hershey, one grandson, three step grandchildren, one brother, Steve married to Margie Lamberson of Millersville, and four sisters, Bonnie married to Joe McCoy and Linda married to Steve Himpsl both of Mountville, Janet married to Paul Miller of East Petersburg, and Brenda married to Bruce Fleming of Mount Joy.

Harlan R. Steffy, 80, of 427 Orchard Lane Manheim,Pa. died Friday at Lancaster General Hospital. He had been under a doctors care.
Born in Warwick Twp. on April 16, 1923 he was the son of the late Gertrude Hoffer. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II he served in the European Theater of Operations and fought in the Battle Of The Bulge. He was a member of Cocalico Valley Post 3376 Veteran’s of Foreign Wars in Ephrata. For 38 years Harlan was a routeman for the former Graybill’s Dairy. Following his retirement he worked part time at the Manheim Auto Auction. A member of Salem United Methodist Church in Manheim he served as an usher. He enjoyed coin collecting as a hobby.
Surviving is his wife of 60 years Arlene Sides Steffy. A daughter Linda S. married to Stanley L. Kreider of Manheim,Pa. A son Larry S. of Manheim. 4 Grandsons and 2 Great Grandchildren.

Leona M. Kauffman

Leona M. Kauffman, 82, of 222 Line Road, Greene, Maine formerly of Mastersonville, PA died of natural causes on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, Maine. She had been a resident of Greene, Maine since 2001.
Born in Shenandoah Valley, Mount Jackson, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John Paul Smith and Julia Verl Dellinger. Her husband Charles Webster Kauffman, died on October 4, 1983. She was raised and adopted by her grandparents James and Martha Kohne Dellinger and great grandfather Erasmus Dellinger. Leona worked during WW II as a riveter for Armstrong World Industries, Lancaster, PA. A life member of the Manheim VFW Post 5956 Auxiliary, she also volunteered at the Veterans Hospital in Coatesville, PA. She was a member of Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, Manheim, PA, were she was a former Sunday school teacher. In her younger years, she broke and rode stallions. Leona was an avid deer and bear hunter and was known as a sharpshooter. She also enjoyed riding motorcycles and snowmobiles as well as spending time at her mountain cabin on Big Flat Mountain near Shippensburg, PA. A talented seamstress, she sewed quilts for the church and repaired dolls by the thousands.
Surviving are five daughters: Sandy married to Harold Bates of Greene, Maine, Susan married to Larry Cramer of Lebanon, PA, Rose married to Kenneth Wenger of York County, PA, Marie married to Lester Nash, Ann Clark both of California; three sons: Robert married to Beverly Stine Kauffman, of Manheim, Pa, Charles married to Charlotte Riggleman of Marietta, PA, Kenneth married to Ruth Riggleman of Denver, Colorado; 33 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; two brothers: David and Douglas married to Brenda Marston of Mount Jackson, Virginia; two sisters: Ellen Burner, Vivian Ryan both of Mount Jackson, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by a son: Richard Kauffman; a brother: George Marston; and three sisters: Julia Marston Smith, Helen Marston, and Charlotte Nicholson.

Charles M. Webb, 69, of 930 Orchard Road, Manheim, PA, died of natural causes at his residence on Tuesday, December 9, 2003 following a lengthy illness.
Born in Mount Joy, Pa, he was the son of the late Charles G. and Miriam L. Gainer Webb. His wife Dorothy G. Welsh Webb died in 2001. Retiring in 1999, as a truck driver for ABF Trucking for over twenty years, he also worked for the former Fuller Company, Manheim, PA for twenty years. He attended Mount Joy High School. He was a life member of the Elstonville Sportsman Association and the Germania Band Club, Manheim, Pa. Charles was a member of Dela-Chas Fishing Association, Lititz American Legion Post 56, Liverpool Legion, Millerstown Moose, National Rifle Association, Newmanstown Athletic Association, and the Central Pennsylvania Teamsters # 776. Charles was an avid hunter, fisherman, and Nascar fan, especially a Dale Earnhardt fan.

Keith Peters both of Lititz; 8 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 5 step great grandchildren; a brother: James L. married to Vicky Webb of Manheim, Pa; two sisters: Theresa married to Kenneth Newcomer of Mount Joy, Pa, Lois J. Hackenberger of Anchorage, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Richard and Nelson Webb, and a sister: Nancy Webb.

Daniel Francis Boyle, 81, of 1787 Sandbeach Road Hummelstown, PA died of natural causes on Tuesday December 9, 2003 at 3043 Steinruck Road Elizabethtown, PA.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he was the son of the late Frank and Effie Immel Boyle. He was married 45 years to Mary H. Hunsberger Boyle in October 2003. He worked for over 45 years as a mechanic on specialty construction equipment and trucks. Mr. Boyle was last employed at Brookwood Farms in Harrisburg, PA. He was a member of Schaefferstown Mennonite Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four daughters: Sarah B. married to Dennis P. Peck and Mary Emma Boyle both of Myerstown, PA, Miriam L Boyle of Elizabethtown, PA, Esther M. Boyle of Cambridge Springs, PA; three sons: Daniel I. married to Julie Boyer Boyle of McAlisterville, PA, Jacob E. married to Susan Collins Boyle of Romulus, New York, and Noah F. married to Gloria J. Kreider Boyle of Elizabethtown, PA; 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter: Rachel Boyle and a sister: Rosalie Boyle.

Betty O. Gochenaur, 77, formerly of 115 North Main Street Manheim, PA, died unexpectedly of natural causes on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, PA. where she had been a resident.
Born in Mastersonville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Allen P. and Lottie Greiner Ober. Her husband, Clarence Gochenaur, died in 1978. Retiring in 1989, she worked 14 years as a Teller and then in the Customer Services Department for the former Manheim National Bank now the Farmers First Bank, Manheim Branch. Previous she worked in the office for 25 years at the former Raymark Industries, Manheim. Betty was a very active member of Jerusalem United Church of Christ, Penryn, where she served as church organist for 46 years, and for many years was church secretary and choir director, and served as both Elder and Deacon on the Church Consistory, taught Sunday school and Bible School. She also volunteered at the Nearly Nu Shop Manheim, PA., and was the treasurer for seven years. An avid bowler, she was a Pennsylvania State Bowling Champion in the Women’s Division, averaging a score of 184.
Surviving are a step daughter: Arlene Nunemacher of Manheim, six step grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a step daughter, Margaret Shank; two brothers: Allen Ray Ober and David Kenneth Ober; and a sister: Amelia Ober.

Verna M. Lehman, 72, of 2042 Valley Road Manheim, Pa. died Wednesday at the Lancaster General Hospital of natural causes.
Born in Warwick Township she was the daughter of the late Willis & Beulah Good Huber. A homemaker she enjoyed being with her grandchildren.
Surviving is her husband Samuel P. Lehman. They observed 50 years of marriage March 28, 2003. Two daughters: L. Dorothy M. Dungan, 90, formerly of 28 Glendale Drive Lancaster, PA, died of natural causes on Friday, March 5, 2004 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, PA following a brief illness. She had been a resident at Pleasant View Retirement Community since 1997.
Born in Lancaster County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Julia Batzer Hagan. Her husband, Chester E. Dungan Jr., died in 1989. Retiring in 1968, she worked as a cook for over 15 years at Armstrong World Industries, Lancaster, PA. Previously, she worked many years as a cook for Glass Kitchens, Lancaster, PA. She was a very active member of Christ United Methodist Church Lancaster were she taught Sunday school, helped with fellowship meals, and Women’s Fellowship. Her interest included crafts, ceramics, flower gardening, and traveling throughout the United States.
Surviving are a son, Gene A. Dungan of Mountville, PA; a daughter: Dolly M. married to Rick Diffenderfer of Manheim, PA; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. She was preceded in death by one great granddaughter.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 8, 2004, at 2:00PM at Hoffer Auditorium Pleasant View Retirement Community 544 N. Penryn Road Manheim, Pa. Interment

Ethel I. Tobias, 90, of 117 Frederick Street Manheim, PA., died early Saturday morning at the Pleasant View Retirement Community Manheim, following a long illness.
Born in Fear Not, Schuylkill County PA., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Vada Carl Miller. She was the wife of the late Reverend Harry M. Tobias who died in 1996. A homemaker, Mrs. Tobias also helped her husband with his ministry throughout the years. Ethel spoke at many churches in the Lancaster County Area. An avid reader, Ethel was involved in Christian Education her whole life. She was a member of Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, Manheim. A graduate of Tremont High School where she was a champion on the debate team. Ethel also attended Pottsville School Of Business.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia A. Miller, Manheim, two grandchildren, three great granddaughters, and a sister, Edith Leitzel of Pine Grove, PA. Many Nieces and Nephews also survive.
