Dorothy A. Reading

Dorothy A. Reading, 92, formerly of 235 East Fredinand Street Manheim died peacefully following a brief illness on Monday, October 23, 2006 at Luther Acres Lititz.
Born in Port Carbon, she was the daughter of the late Alfred J. and Grace Kane Childs. A homemaker, she was the wife of the late Joseph M. Reading who died in August 2001. Dorothy was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Manheim where she taught a special education Sunday school class for many years. She served as Past Matron of the Amaranth Chapter 107 Manheim and was a member of Lititz Springs Chapter 499 Order of the Eastern Star. Grace volunteered at the Nearly-Nu Shop Manheim; her interests included sewing, crocheting and gardening.
Surviving are three sons, Charles M. husband of Luise Wubbena Reading of Lititz, Francis E. “ Cook “ husband of Beth Todd Reading of Lititz, Kenneth L. husband of Susan Heisey Reading of Manheim, seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, a brother, Edward V. husband of Kathryn Childs of Downingtown, two sisters, Grace D. Boyer and Mary E. Childs all of Pottsville. She was preceded in death by two grandsons, five brothers, James J., Robert F., Thomas J., Alfred J., and Francis Childs, and three sisters, Margaret M. Kowalick, Isabelle T. Meros, and Catherine M. Steranko.

Stella S. Shelly, 91, formerly of West Newport Road Manheim went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, November 2, 2006 at the Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community (Mt. Hope Church Home) Manheim, PA.
Born in Rapho Township, she was the daughter of the late John and Emma Snavely Haldeman. A homemaker, she was the wife of the late John S. Shelly who died in October of 1996. Stella was a member of the White Oak Church Of The Brethren Manheim. Her interests included flower and vegetable gardening, sewing, and needlepoint.
Surviving are three sons, Dale L. husband of Nancy M. Moyer Shelly of Wyomissing, Elvin E. husband of Linda B. Brunner Shelly of Denver, Richard L. husband of JoAnn Friebertshauser Shelly of Rockville, Maryland, a daughter, Gloria M. wife of David H. Miller Jr. of Landisville, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a sister, Irene wife of Levi Rohrer of Penn Township. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Steven Miller, two brothers, Elmer & Oliver Haldeman, and a sister, Elizabeth Faus.

George H. Smeltzer

George H. Smeltzer, 95, of 374 North Colebrook Road Manheim died peacefully Friday, October 20, 2006 at Moravian Manor Lititz.
Born in Millersburg, he was the son of the late Harvey and Alice Auker Smeltzer. A life long farmer, he was the owner and operator of his own farm in Rapho Township. Early in his life he worked with his father as an electrician in building projects throughout Lancaster County. George last was employed at the former Anchor now Philips Company Lancaster; previous he worked for the Manheim Belting Company, and worked as a driver for the Food Service Department for the Manheim Central School District and was also employed by Longenecker’s Hardware Manheim. He was the husband of the late Minnie B. Ginder Smeltzer who died in July of 1994. A former member of the Mastersonville Brethren In Christ Church he also served as a Sunday school teacher. His interests were fishing and taking long drives in his car throughout Lancaster County and surrounding areas, he loved experiencing nature and wildlife areas.
Surviving is a son, Kenneth E. husband of Joyce Longenecker Smeltzer of Manheim, a daughter, Ruth Ann wife of J. Melvin Dombach of Goodyear Arizona,, two granddaughters, Julie Fitzpatrick and Sandy Smeltzer, and a sister, Sylvia wife of Alfred Wenger of Waynesboro. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan Smeltzer and a sister, Elva Bixler.

Alvah W. Weaver III, infant son of Alvah W. Jr. and Melissalynn Meallow Weaver of 447 West Marion Street Lititz died Thursday, October 19, 2006 at the Heart Of Lancaster Regional Medical Center Lititz.
Surviving in addition to his parents are paternal grandparents, Alvah Sr. and Brenda Weaver of Lititz, maternal grandfather, Barry Meallow of Lititz, paternal great grandfather, Carl husband of Lois Weaver of Lititz, paternal great grandmothers, Elsie Anderson of Bradenton, Florida and Catherine Kleinhaus of Lancaster. He was also survived by aunts and uncles. Alvah was preceded in death by a maternal grandmother Linda Meallow.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in Longenecker’s Brethren Cemetery Warwick Township. Hazel J. Gehman

Hazel J. Gehman, 75, who resided at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, entered into rest Tuesday December 5, 2006 during the early morning after a long battle with diabetes.
She was the wife of the late Howard J. Gehman, to whom she was married to for 51 years. Born in Pequea, she is the daughter of Mildred Anderson Booth of Lancaster and the late Vearl Booth, Sr. Hazel was a glass lathe operator for the former RCA Corporation of Lancaster and retired after 40 years of service. She was a member of the former Red Rose Lioness Club of Manheim, and a member of Jerusalem Church of Penryn. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and her friendships she formed at Pleasant View. An avid sports fan, she enjoyed talking to her grandsons about her favorite teams, the Phillies and the Eagles. Always one to learn new things through the years, she enjoyed sewing for her grandchildren, ceramics, crocheting, and many other crafts.
Hazel was the mother of Pamela A., wife of Lewis Baker of Manheim; Thomas J. Gehman, partner of Terry Kurtz of Lancaster; and Jere R. Gehman who died in 1955; grandmother of Jeff, Melissa, Robin, Kate, Josh and Joel; great-grandmother of Adam, Andy, Jenny, Kristy, Robby, and Summer. Also survived by brothers, Jay & Vearl, Jr.; sisters, Grace & Nancy; and was preceded in death by a brother Ross and a sister Carolyn.

Miriam W. Lehman, 73, of 1892 Hossler Road Manheim, went home to be with her Lord peacefully at her residence on Sunday, December 10, 2006.
Born in Lampeter she was the daughter of the late Frank A. and Minerva Kreider Witmer. A homemaker, she was the wife of the late Glenn L. Lehman who died in February of 1997. Miriam was a member of Hernley Mennonite Church, Manheim. Throughout her years Miriam provided a card ministry sending cards to friends, family and her church family. For over forty-four years she designed and baked all occasion cakes helping families celebrate special events in their lives. Her interests included flower gardening and spending time with her family and friends.

Rohrer of Mount Joy, twenty-one grandchildren, two step grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, two brothers, Harold husband of Naomi Witmer of Manheim, Raymond husband of Shirley Witmer of Lewistown, two sisters, Mary Brown of Akron, and Jane wife of Elvin Siegrist of Ronks. Patricia Jane Demmy, 79, of 145 West Rapho Street Manheim, died unexpectedly but peacefully surrounded by her family at the Lancaster General Hospital on Saturday, December 16, 2006.
Born in Lancaster she was the daughter of the late James A. Smith and Ella E. Hoffman Connelly and stepdaughter of the late S. Robert Connelly. A homemaker she was the wife of the late Lloyd R. Demmy who died in January of 1989. Patricia Jane was a very active and faithful member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Manheim where she served as a member of the Congregation Council, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Daughters of Zion Sunday school class. During her life she was active with the Learning Disabilities Association of Lancaster County. With the help of her husband together they served as foster parents for newborn infants for many years. In 1973 Patricia Jane and her husband was presented with The Service To Mankind Award from the Manheim Sertoma Club. Her interests included crafts.
Surviving are three daughters, Susan K. wife of Carl Floyd of Columbia, Barbara J. Mull of Lititz, Judith A. wife of Kevin Miller of Lancaster, two sons, Thomas C. Demmy of New Cumberland, David W. husband of Mary Ann Barnosky Demmy of Maytown, ten grandchildren, and two great granddaughters. She was preceded in death by one grandson, and a brother Charles E. Connelly.

J. Charles Hershey, 98, of Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, died Monday December 18, 2006 at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center, Lititz, following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Emma M. (Risser) Hershey, who died in 1988.
Born in Penn Twp. he was the son of the late Jacob and Annie (Lutz) Hershey. Retiring in 1973, Charles was the last living stockholder of the New Holland Sales Stables. He was a member of the White Oak Church of the Brethren, Manheim.
Surviving are seven daughters, Joanne R. Hoke of York; Nancy J. wife of Josie Buckwalter of Lititz; Mildred A. wife of Richard Hammer of Easton; Gloria J. Hershey of Mountville; Mary Lou wife of John Shirk of Manheim; Phyllis M. wife of Richard Hurst of Wapwallopen; Evelyn M. wife of Larry Gibble of Coudersport; 18 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Jacob Charles, Jr., 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

Mary M. Hilliard, 78, of 532 Brookshire Avenue Manheim died peacefully surrounded by her family and went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, December 20, 2006.
Born in Lititz she was the daughter of the late Wayne E. and Stella McCurdy Habecker. Mary was the owner and operator of the former Rose Towne Restaurant Manheim; she also was employed as a cook at Elizabethtown College and Kreider’s Family Restaurants Manheim and Hershey and the food service department at the former Schick Corporation Lancaster. She was involved as a cook and in food service management for numerous restaurants throughout Lancaster County. Mary was the wife of James D. Hilliard and they observed their 58th wedding anniversary on October 24th of this year. She attended Mount Calvary Church Elizabethtown. Her interests included reading and collecting ceramic roosters and cardinals. Her life was filled providing special meals and inviting family and friends to share at the family table. A very giving and loving person, Mary was special to her children, grandchildren and to everyone she met.
Surviving are two sons, David J. husband of Robin E. Saylor Hilliard of Manheim, Darin J. husband of Tina M. Roane Hilliard of Lancaster, five grandchildren, Leah Hilliard, Elizabeth Hilliard, Kayla Hilliard, Darrien Hilliard, and Divine Hilliard. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Benjamin, Arthur, and Wayne Habecker, two sisters, Dora Gass and Edith Sides.

Earl R. Sinniger, 75, of 998 Rife Run Road, Manheim died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, December 21, 2006 at the Essa Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster following a brief illness.
Born in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Frank P. and Charlotte G. Crow Sinniger. He was the husband of Ruth A. Ruhl Sinniger and they observed their 50th wedding anniversary on October 20th of this year. Earl worked for the former Alumax, now Alcoa Lancaster for thirty- one years retiring in 1994. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean War. Mr. Sinniger was a member of Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, Manheim where he served as a greeter, usher and helped with the fellowship meals. His interests included camping, woodworking, Lionel Trains and attending his grandchildren’s school events.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Rodney E. husband of Kay L. Breneman Sinniger, John R. husband of Ruth A. Funck Sinniger both of Manheim; two daughters, Cindy L. wife of Martin H. Enck of Elizabethtown, Barbara A. Patrick of Manheim; nine grandchildren, two step grandchildren, one great granddaughter and a sister, Barbara L. Brandt of Middletown.

John Karl Markley, 84, of 1756 Becker Road Manheim, died Monday, December 25, 2006 at the Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center Lititz following a brief illness.
Born in Landisville he was the son of the late B. Franklin and Elsie Machmer Markley. John retired from Armstrong Floor Plant Lancaster after many years of service. He was a U. S. Army veteran serving with the 79th Reconnaissance Troop during World War II where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. John was the husband of the late Mabel E. Umble Markley who died in 1981. He was a life member of the Manheim V.F.W. Post 5956. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are three daughters, Judith wife of Joseph McMichael of Mount Joy, Brenda wife of Larry Raihl of Akron, Diane wife of Richard P. Frey of Lebanon, one son, Barry K. husband of Kathryn Markley of Shippensburg, seven grandchildren, Jeff, Michelle, Skip, Scott, Rich, Jenn, Niki, and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Claude Markley.

James "Pap" L. Harrington

James “Pap” L. Harrington, 69, of 2279 East Mount Hope Road, Manheim, died Friday December 29, 2006, at the Essay Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster, following a brief illness.
Born in Lancaster County, he was the son of the late James L. Harrington, Sr. and the late Bernice Dissinger Webster. He was the husband of the late Janet L. Harrington, who died in October 2004. James was a press set up technician for over thirty-five years for Bulova Technologies of Lancaster. He was a member of Hope Episcopal Church, Manheim. He was a life member of the Elstonville Sportsmen Association; a member of the Lanco Micro Midget Club of Brickerville. James was owner and operator of Harrington Motor Sports, and enjoyed several championship winning seasons, and collected over eighty wins at various speedways throughout the United States. He was an avid hunter and NASCAR fan. In his youth he enjoyed motorcycle hill climbs where he won several championships, and established the Boot Leger Hunting Camp in Potter Co in 1972.
Surviving are four daughters, Jackie L. Houshower of Lancaster, Jeanne L. Harrington of Mount Gretna, Justina L. Zelek companion of Vinton L. Heisey of Manheim, Jami A. Harrington companion of Bryan Sherr of Columbia, a son, James L. Harrington, Jr. companion of Christopher M. Fry of Mount Wolf, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two brothers, Fred husband of Ethel Gordon of Manheim, Kenneth E. husband of DiAnne Webster of Manheim, and a sister Beverly wife of Craig Barr of Omaha NE. He was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Greiner, and a brother Dennis Webster.

Martha M. Cooper, 91, formerly of Cider Press Road, Manheim died on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at Lancashire Hall following a brief illness.
Born in Lebanon, she was the daughter of the late Amos and Ida Sunnon Breidenstien. She was the wife of the late Elmer S. Cooper he died in 1965. Martha retired as a garment folder for the former Colebrook Lingerie, Colebrook, PA. She was a member of the Hope Episcopal Church, Manheim and the Elstonville Sportsmen Association. Her interests included gardening and crocheting.
Surviving is a daughter, Kathryn E. Ruhl of Manheim, a son, Miles E. husband of Lynn Yecker Cooper of California; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; several brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by a son, Terry L. Cooper and several brothers and sisters.
