Robert E. Donahue

Robert E. Donahue, 79, a Dutchess County resident since 1958, died on Friday, January 6, 2006 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. He was a State Trooper with Troop K in Rhinebeck for 19 years until his retirement in 1976. Robert was a former Vice Chairman of the Dutchess County Conservative Party, Chairman of the Town of LaGrange Conservative Party, and member of the Retired State Troopers Association. He attended Holy Trinity Cchurch in Poughkeepsie.
Born in Brooklyn on September 5, 1926, he was the son of the late John F. and Anastasia Kilroy Donahue. In 1942 he joined the US Navy and served his country during World War II. In 1944, he enlisted in the US Army until being honorably discharged from the military in 1956, after his involvement in the Korean Conflict. On May 31, 1950, he married Grace H. Serverino of Linz, Austria.
Survivors includehis former wife, Grace Donahue of LaGrange; his sons R. Brandan Donahue and his wife Audrey of Marietta, GA, Scott donahue and his wife Toni of Westport, CT; and Sean Donahue of LaGrange; a sister, Mary Weillant of East Northport, Long Island, and five grandchildren, Shannon, Rory, Cara, Lara and Savannah Donahue. He was predeceased by his son Matthew Donahue.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Friday at 9:45 a.m. at Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Poughkeepsie.

Warren Edward Kershaw
Clinton Corners, NY
Warren Edward Kershaw of Clinton Corners, New York, died of natural causes on January 12, 2006 after a long illness. He was 81 on January 7, 2006.
Warren was born on Staten Island, N.Y. on January 7, 1925 to George and Katherine Kershaw. He grew up on Staten Island and later in Hopewell Junction, where he attended Arlington High School.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Warren served from July 1943 to May 1946 as an Ensign and served on the USS Independence. He then served in the Naval Reserves as a Lieutenant JG until 1959. Following the war, he attended Colgate University, where he majored in economics. Upon graduation he worked as an executive at Western Publishing until 1972, when he started a home heating oil business, “A-One Oil,” in Pleasant Valley, NY.
Warren’s true avocations were farming and horse breeding. In 1956 he and his wife Dacie purchased “Windswept” farm on Sunset Trail in Clinton Corners, where they raised five children together with livestock, horses and crops. He was a master horseman. He and his wife enjoyed many years of fox hunting with The Rombout Hunt Club. In later he years raised thoroughbred race horses. On February 21, 1990, his horse “All Rise Please” took first place in a six furlong race at the New York Aqueduct race track. On August 28, 1993, “Titan’s Belle” placed first at the famous Saratoga NY race track, completing 1 3/8 miles in record time.
In addition to his wife of 54 years Dacie (Marshall) Kershaw of Rhinebeck, he is survived by four children, Alicia Kershaw, and her husband Peter Rose of Manhattan, New York; Anne Kershaw, and her husband Clifford Berger of Tarrytown, NY; Clinton Kershaw of Pleasant Valley, NY; and Katherine Mustello, and her husband Ron of Clinton Corners, New York; 7 grandchildren, two sisters, Anita Jacobsen of Texas and Edyth Larson of Florida; a brother, George Kershaw of Vermont, and several nieces and nephews. His son Charles died in 1973. He was also predeceased by two sisters Dolores Lesher and Edna Bickford.
Warren will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services will take place on Monday, January 16, 2006 with calling hours at 10 a.m. and services at 11 a.m. at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 West Market Street, Rhinebeck, NY 12572.
Burial will be at the Upton Lake Friends Cemetery in Clinton Corners, NY, following the service.

Katherine S. Dillman
Red Hook, NY
Katherine S. Dillman, 86, of Red Hook, NY, died Sunday, January 8, 2006 at the Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY.
Kay was a member of the Red Hook Golf Club and had served as the club’s Social Committee chairperson. She was a member of the Red Hook Republican Club, the Red Hook Grange, the Red Hook PTA, and the Society for the Apprehension and Detention of Horse Theives. She was also a charter member of the Red Hook Garden Club, and a member of the Sheldon Museum in Vermont.
Born July 15, 1919, in Albany, NY, she was the daughter of the late Howard Ellsworth and Ruth A. (Warden) Sheldon. From the age of 16 to 18, she lived in the Philippines with her uncle and aunt.
Kay worked for NY Telephone Company in Albany, and then, during World War II, as the Executive Secretary at the Rationing Board in Rhinebeck.
On June 20, 1943 in the Church of the Messiah in Rhinebeck, she married Louis G. Dillman, DDS. Dr. Dillman survives her at home.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons: Randy L. Dillman and his wife Alice of Schenectady, NY, and Barry H. Dillman of Red Hook, and three grandchildren: Heather E. Dillman of Rhinebeck, Molly Dillman of Albany, and Randall T. Dillman of Schenectady.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Thursday, Jan 12th, at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook. The Rev. Gerald Gallagher of will officiate.
There will be no visiting hours.

Sandra Ann Tremper Dezago

Sandra Ann Tremper Dezago, 71, passed away Friday, January 6, 2006, at home with her family by her side.
Sandy worked for over 30 years as a substitute teacher and aide at the Chancellor Livingston Elementary School in Rhinebeck. She was an avid gardener and had also worked at the Wonderland Garden Center.
Sandy was active in the Rhinebeck Alumni Association and a member of the Rhinebeck Choral Club for more than 30 years. She was also a member of the Reformed Church of Rhinebeck.
She graduated from Rhinebeck Central School in 1952 and Cortland State Teachers College in 1956. Before returning to Rhinebeck she was an elementary teacher in Hempstead, NY.
Born January 19, 1934 in Rhinebeck, she was the daughter of the late Florence (Heywood) Tremper Scattergood and Leonard Tremper. She was also predeceased by her step-father Jack Scattergood.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Frank, two sons, Todd of Elizaville; and Jeff of Red Hook; a daughter-in-law Pam; two grandchildren Jordyn, 12, and Tyler, 9; a sister, Jackie, and her husband Perry Montanye of Pensacola, Fl; a brother-in-law, John Dezago, Jr., and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Sandy’s cared deeply for children; especially her own children and grandchildren whom she cherished as her best friends.
Calling hours are Sunday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck.

Arnold Hansen-Sturm

The Hansen-Sturm family sadly announces the passing of Arnold Hansen-Sturm, 66, of Rhinebeck, NY. Arnold was the second beloved son of Guenter and Dorothy Hansen-Sturm, and beloved brother of Cord, Margaret, Linda, and Robert.
Arnold is survived by his five children from his first wife Leslie Hansen-Sturm, Lindsey, Martha, Sarah, David and Michael and four Grandchildren and his second wife, Brigette Hansen-Sturm.
Arnold graduated from Babson College with a business degree before becoming the 5th generation to join the Hansen-Sturm family Caviar Business. In 1969, he became President of the Romanoff Caviar Company a subsidiary of Dieckman & Hansen that was established in 1869. In 1980 Arnold reincorporated the Hansen Caviar Company. After training his youngest Son, Arnold retired in 2003, leaving the sixth generation Michael Hansen-Sturm to carry on the Family Legacy in the Caviar Industry.
Arnold suffered from Parkinson’s disease and died of heart failure.
Funeral services will be held on January 9th at 12:00 Noon at the Church of St. James the Less, Scarsdale, New York at Church Lane and Crane Road. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any donations made to the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson’s research at 1-800-708-7644.

Keith Pitts, 77, a Rhinebeck resident for many years, passed away, Monday, January 2, 2006, at the Ferncliff Nursing Home.
Keith was a former Gloversville resident and had been employed making pocketbooks.
He is survived by a sister Betty Nightingale of Canajoharie, NY.

Joseph A. "Buddy" Kiernan
Rhinebeck, NY
Joseph A. ‘Buddy’ Kiernan, 81, passed away Sunday, January 1st, at Saint Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie, after a brief illness.
Born on March 25, 1924, in Yonkers, NY, Joseph was the son of the late Kathryn (Kane) Kiernan and Joseph Kiernan. Joseph attended Longfellow Jr. High School as well as Saunders Trade School, both in Yonkers and received his GED in 1980 at the age of 65.
He started his career in the carpet industry when he was employed by Alexander Smith Carpet Mills Yonkers, NY as a weaver. He subsequently went on to start his own carpet installation and cleaning business, Kiernan Carpet Service, and eventually became a partner in K&K Carpet, a retail floor covering store, formerly located in Rhinebeck until his retirement in 1994. Following his retirement he became a regular volunteer at Castle Point Veterans Hospital for many years.
Mr. Kiernan served in the United States Army from February 1943 thru November 1945. He enlisted as a rifleman and took part in the Central Europe, Rhineland, Rome-Arno and Southern France campaigns as well as the Battle of Anzio. He was assigned to the 87th infantry and later, Company F, 179th Regiment of the 45th Division. He took part as a squad member in combat and combat patrols. He was promoted to corporal. Joseph was captured in Epinal, France on September 14th 1944 and held prisoner near Munich Germany at Stalag 12a until being moved by boxcar to Moosburg, Bavaria; Stalag 7a. Surprisingly, Joe communicated with his German captor on a friendly basis by phone and mail as recently as last month. He received the Bronze Star Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the Prisoner of War Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 Service Stars.
Joseph was a past commander of the VFW Post 1666, Yonkers, a life member of the Red Hook VFW # 7765, and a member of the American Legion Montgomery Post #429.
He was also a member of the DAV, the National Association of Ex-Pow’s; and Honorary member of the West Clinton Fire Department.
On April 21, 1946 at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Yonkers, he married Irene M. Moore.
In addition to his wife of Rhinebeck, he is survived by five children, Joseph, and his wife Linda Kiernan of Wappingers Falls, NY; Lori, and her husband Mike Stark of Rhinebeck, NY; Gary, and his wife Sandy Kiernan of Rhinebeck, NY; Deborah, and her husband Kevin Fierro of Rhinebeck, NY; and Carol, and her husband Vincent Matrinelli of Florida; 13 Grandchildren, Kara Gabay, Daniel Kiernan, Jennifer Holsapple, Danielle, Sean and Sarah Kiernan, Jeffrey and Kyle Stark, Allister, Alexander, Alisa and Ryan Martinelli, and Murphy Ann Pena; 7 great grandchildren, two sisters Kathleen Brown and Margaret ‘Peggy’ Welsh of Yonkers and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son John, a brother, James, and a sister, Rita.
Joe was an enthusiastic storyteller and a great socializer; most of all a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all; he will be greatly missed.

Barbara O’Han

A familiar and beloved figure in the village of Rhinebeck, Barbara O‘Han, passed away peacefully February 2, 2006 with her family prayerfully by her side. At the time of her death she was surrounded by her eight children. Her husband of 59 years, John Charles O’Han, Sr., passed away September 10, 2002. Mrs. O’Han was remembered today as a person of rare beauty and goodness, extraordinary devotion to family and to God, and boundless love, kindness and generosity to all who knew her.
Barbara O’Han, was born Barbara Accetta on January 20, 1925, in New York City, the only daughter of Elmo and Rose Accetta, recently arrived in the United States from their home in the small village of Sacco, southeast of Salerno, in southern Italy. She grew up in the Bronx, New York with her parents and her three brothers, Nicholas, Joseph, now diseased, and Elmo. She would often reminisce about annual summer vacations, a great luxury for a child raised during the Depression, in a little cottage her father had built in Elmont, New York. Barbara Accetta was an excellent student. In the sixth grade she was promoted into the Rapid Classes, which enabled her to graduate at age 16 from the James Monroe High School An expert typist and stenographer, upon graduation she went immediately to work at The Western Union Company in Lower Manhattan. Later, in addition to the constant demands of raising her large family, Mrs. O’Han would apply these business skills as her husband’s secretary and assistant in his many entrepreneurial ventures.
Barbara Accetta met John O’Han in 1940, when she was fifteen years-old. On their first date, he took her to Coney Island, where she took her first, and last, ride on the famous rollercoaster there. After her graduation from High School, they became engaged. In May of 1943, they married. Mr. O’Han had already received his induction orders from the United States Army. A civil ceremony was performed at New York’s City Hall and the next day, after a brief honeymoon overnight at the elegant St George Hotel in Brooklyn Heights, Mr. O’Han shipped out. He eventually served with the 492nd Engineers in New Zealand and other islands in the South Pacific before returning home, after sustaining a serious injury, in 1945. After recuperating in upstate New York, he returned home and in April of 1946 the O’Hans began their family with the birth of their first child, Nicholas. Seven children would follow.
In 1968 the family moved to Rhinebeck New York, where the O’Hans purchased an 1847 Victorian home situated on a rolling site bordering Crystal Lake. Six of her eight children were educated in the Rhinebeck school system and graduated from the local High School. Mrs. O’Han was known to every Rhinebeck High School Student, serving with distinction as Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools and Clerk to the Board of Education for fifteen years. With her husband, she was regularly seen at Rhinebeck High School sporting and cultural events watching her children play soccer and basketball and perform in school productions. A generation of Rhinebeck youth fondly remembers the O’Han residence as a second home and John and Barbara O’Han as second parents when they were growing up. In later years Mr. and Mrs. O’Han were equally devoted and involved in the lives of their fifteen grandchildren, often attending concerts, dramatic performances and numerous athletic events, an activity Mrs. O’Han pursued with great energy, enthusiasm and joy until the onset of her recent illness.
Barbara O’Han was a person of profound faith and was a devoted member of the Good Shepherd Church. She was a legendary cook, a passionate gardener and an avid reader. But, first and foremost she was selflessly devoted to her loving and growing family, which at the time of her death included, in addition to her eight children, fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her children and their spouses are Nicholas O’Han and his wife Elaine Winter of New York City; Barbara Brazina and her husband Joseph Brazina of Vero Beach Florida; Janice Gallarano and her husband Michael Gallarano of Sebastian, FL.; John O’Han, Jr., of Rhinebeck; Joseph O’Han and his wife Karen O’Han of Red Hook, New York; Alice Lloyd and her husband Cary Lloyd of Morristown, New Jersey; Carol Chestney and her husband Christopher Chestney of Rhinebeck; and Robert O’Han and his wife Kim O’Han of Raleigh, North Carolina. In addition, she is survived by her two brothers, Nicholas Accetta of Zephyrhills, Florida and Elmo Accetta, and his wife Helen of Selden, New York; a sister-in-law Eula Accetta of Stony Point, NY, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Joseph Accetta of Stony Point, New York and a sister-in-law Florence Accetta of Zephyrhills, Florida.
The family will receive visitors between 5-8 PM, Sunday, February 5th and 2 - 4 PM and 7-9 PM on Monday, February 6th at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51West Market Street, and Rhinebeck.
Prayers and a musical liturgy will be offered Monday evening at 8:00 PM.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM, Tuesday, February 7th at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 3 Mulberry Street, Rhinebeck.
Entombment will be in the Rhinebeck Cemetery, Rhinebeck New York.

Eleanor A. Lewis, a 20- year area resident, died on Wednesday February 1, 2006 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 66.
She was born on November 7, 1939 in Peekskill, NY to the late Einar Gustav and Aina Carlson Anderson.
She was retired from her position as Executive Secretary for Lanensheidt Map Company in Maspeth, Queens.
Survivors include her husband of 33 years, James S. Luis, at home. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins in Sweden.

Deming L. Kehrley, a lifelong resident of Swan Lake, passed away the Catskill Regional Medical Center on Tuesday January 31, 2006. He was 73.
The son of Henry and Neda Hathaway Kehrley, he was born on December 6, 1933 in Swan Lake, NY.
He was a retired truck driver for Teamsters Local 445 in Newburgh. Deming was a member of the Swan Lake Fire Dept. for over 50 years and was its past Chief. He was also a 25-year member of the Hudson Valley Volunteer Fireman’s Assn.
Survivors include his two daughters, Joanne and Donna Kehrley at home; a brother, Luther Kehrley of Woodridge; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Hogencamp and her husband Robert of White Sulphur Springs and Connie Poley and her husband Dick of Cody, Wyoming and several nieces and nephews.
His wife, Norma Kehrley and 2 brothers, Eugene and Howard Kehrley, predeceased him.
Visitation will be at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St. Liberty on Friday February 3, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Swan Lake Fire Department will hold Firematic services at 7:30 PM.

George N. Hembdt

George N. Hembdt, a lifelong Sullivan County resident, passed away at his home in Mongaup Valley on Sunday January 29, 2006. He was 87.
The son of George N. and Bessie Lefferts Hembdt, he was born on June 28, 1918 in Monticello.
George was a Principal Real Estate Appraiser for the NYS Division of Equalization and Assessment, Albany, NY retiring in 1983. He was a member of the First Church of Monticello-Presbyterian where he was a former elder and trustee. He was the Town of Thompson Clerk from 1948-1960; a charter member of Monticello BPOE #1544 and a member of the Masonic Lodge # 532 F&AM.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Clare Seargent Hembdt at home; a son, Philip G. Hembdt of Troy, NY; a sister-in-law, Frieda M. Hembdt and a nephew, George J. Hembdt, both of Napanoch and several other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Lefferts P. Hembdt and a sister, Madelin Evans.

Edward L. Leadbitter

Edward L. Leadbitter, 82, passed away, Wednesday, February 1, 2006, at his home in Staatsburg.
A native of Hyde Park, Mr. Leadbitter was a graduate of Roosevelt High School; he began working at IBM in 1941, soon after he was enlisted in the U.S. Navy, he completed quartermaster school, and served on a PT boat in the South Pacific for the duration of WW II. Following the war he returned to IBM, retiring in 1984 as manager of quality control at IBM facilities in Poughkeepsie, Fishkill and Kingston.
Mr. Leadbitter was a member of the Rhinebeck Savings Bank Board of Directors where he served as First Vice President; a member of the Dutchess Community College Norrie Point Advisory Committee, former member of the Staatsburg Union Free School Board of Education, former Clerk of the Board of the Hyde Park Central School Distirct, and Past President of the Staatsburg School Association.
He was a life member and Vice President of the Hyde Park Fire Company, life member and a Commissioner of the Staatsburg Fire Company, life member and former Captain of the Staatsburg Rescue Squad; Charter member and Lieutenant of the NYS Fire Police, and member of the Dutchess County Police Officers Association.
Mr. Leadbitter served as Commander of the Hyde Park American Legion, and as Master of the Rhinebeck Lodge #432 F. & A.M. (1958), as well as Dutchess District Service Representative (1957), District Fellowship Chairman (1984), District Deputy Grand Master (1985-1986), Vice Chairman Grand Lodge Camp Turk Committee, member of the Dutchess County Masonic Home Committee, President of the Dutchess County Blue Lodge Officers, and member of the Past Masters Association.
He served as vestryman of the St. Margaret’s Church, was a member of St. James’s Church Men’s club; served as assistant scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the American Society for Quality Control.
Born July 28, 1923 in Hyde Park, he was the son of Lawrence P. and Bessie (Brooks) Leadbitter.
On August 9, 1944 he married Barbara B. Hinds.

Denis Doyle of Red Hook, a son David, and his wife Christine Leadbitter of Poughquag, a granddaughter Kimberly Doyle Boulger, two grandsons Shawn Doyle, and Michael Leadbitter; two great granddaughters Kelly Ann Boulger and Erin Nicole Boulger; two great Grandsons, Derek Alan Doyle and Brandon Robert Doyle and several nieces and nephews. A brother William B. Leadbitter predeceased him.

Members of the Rhinebeck and Red Hook Masonic Lodges will conduct services at 7:00 PM.

John J.Young of Rhinebeck died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at home. He was 88.
He was born on February 11, 1917 in New York City, the son of Rev. Paul M. and Nina Traver Young.
After spending most of his early years in the metropolitan area of New York and Farmingdale, Long Island, he graduated from Kingston High School. He then attended NY University in the Bronx, where he graduated in 1938 with a BS in chemical engineering.
He was employed as a civilian army employee for the US Government Chemical Warfare Procurement Department in NYC for the period of WWII, followed by several jobs as a manufacturing engineer in the Dutchess County area.
In 1962, he directed his full-time efforts to the development and rental of apartments in the Rhinebeck and Kingston areas.
He was married to Rhinec1iff resident, Mildred R. Zegelbrier, for 52 years; Mildred survives at home.
He is also survived by a daughter, Catherine Young & her partner, Denise Suris; a son, Gregory Young and his wife, Marlene Young; and two grandchildren; Sierra Suris, and Casey Young. A brother, Rev. Paul Young Jr., predeceased him.
He was a very active member of Third Lutheran Church of Rhinebeck, where he directed and sang in the choir for many years. He managed the Dutchess County Fair booth which the church operated, for over a decade. He also served as secretary/treasurer of the Wurtemburg Cemetery Association, and took an active part in planning the new section of that cemetery.
He was a faithful and active member of the Rhinebeck Choral Club for 50 years. He enjoyed scuba diving, and was an active member of the Aquatic Explorers in Poughkeepsie. He loved to square dance, and participated in the Lefooters Square Dance Club in Hurley. He also was an avid beekeeper.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, February 4 at Third Lutheran Church in Rhinebeck, with the Rev. John Malfatti presiding. Burial will at the Wurtemburg Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
