Joseph Stephen Csete
Port Jervis, NY
Joseph Stephen Csete, composer, pianist, athlete, freedom fighter, husband and father, died suddenly on Wednesday February 15, 2006 at the age of 72. He was a resident of Port Jervis and formerly of Manhattan.
Joe was a man of great talents and accomplishments, for which he got little practical reward, but he didn’t make a big deal out of this. He was a man of great humility and had a great heart with no pretense. There was no guile in him.
Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1933, he was the son of a brilliant physician, Dr. Emil Csete, a professor of surgery and Mary, a lovely woman with all the social graces. Naturally, Joe had a beautiful early childhood, until it “was gone with the wind” with the coming of the Second World War and what followed with the Soviet occupation and Communist tyranny which left deep scars on his mind. He was an excellent swimmer, played the piano, loved jazz and the great American music of the times, - the Big Bands, Cole Porter, Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Errol Garner, etc. – at the risk of being kicked out of school, because he promoted “decadent capitalistic music.” At 23, he took an active part in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, which tried to shake off the Communist yoke and gave hope, for a short time, for the reestablishment of a free Hungary. After its suppression by Soviet tanks, Joseph escaped to Austria and then came to the U.S., the land of the free and of good jazz. He got a scholarship at Fordham University and won many medals for his college, including the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Swimming Championship in 1959. Shortly after, a nervous breakdown made him quit college and from that time he worked at many odd jobs to make a living, for the longest as a maintenance man in apartment buildings. In the meantime, he continued to play the piano and started to compose very good songs, for which he never received a penny, because he was a dreamer and not a practical man. He had a hard life; he never criticized America, and continued to keep the spirit of a Freedom Fighter, staunchly anti-Communist, standing up for the cause of a free Hungary, in private and public discussions, Commemorations, where he played the piano or at the Captive Nations Parades in New York, where he proudly carried the Hungarian flag and sometimes of other oppressed nations in an authentic Hungarian hussar (cavalry) uniform. He received several awards of recognition from the White House during the time of Presidents Reagan and George Bush Sr. for his staunch loyalty for the cause of freedom.
Joseph played the piano privately and sometimes at public events and in nightclubs, and continued to write beautiful music in the style of the 40’s and 50’s. Unfortunately, he never found a good manager to promote his songs, and he was too straightforward and un-businesslike to do it himself successfully in the jungle of the entertainment world. But he never complained about that and was happy and proud to volunteer his talents, free of charge, at hospitals and nursing homes, entertaining “the oldies.” At the time of his death, he was still a proud volunteer at Mary Manning Walsh Home in Manhattan, one of the biggest and best nursing homes in the city and at Bon Secours Hospital in Port Jervis where he played for the Seniors on Thursdays. He also played the organ, quite often at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Forestburgh, where his brother is a priest. Joseph was a deeply religious man, who gave an uncompromising witness his Christian Catholic faith, not only in words, but in action too. Although a great sportsman and sports fan, he had no concern whatsoever for material things. He was a truly spiritual man, who was only concerned or even tormented by spiritual and existential questions. His political view stemmed from true idealism, not by practical, material concerns. His absolute honesty brought him sometimes into arguments and trouble, but the same also earned him, eventually and unfailingly, the people’s love and respect. He was a truly honest man, a friend of Christ.
Joseph is survived by two sons, Attila and Stephen Csete, both teachers in Long Island, who will attend the funeral with their mother, Rosalie Harris, a retired teacher, living in Great Neck; his wife, Valeria, nee Marinchak and her son Lorant; his brother, the Rev. Ivan Csete, the pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Forstburgh; a cousin, Suzanne Csete Timar of Hungary and many second cousins, nieces and nephews, including Sophie Koller, who was an exchange student here at John Burke Catholic High School a short while ago and conquered the hearts of everyone by her wonderful, lovely personality.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday February 21, 2006 at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 55 St. John St. Monticello from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
Joseph’s funeral mass will be held on Wednesday February 22, 2006 at 12 Noon at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Forestburgh with his brother Rev. Ivan Csete officiating.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
