William D. Leary

William D. Leary, 81, of Rhinebeck, died Thursday, January 27th, 2005 at The Thompson House in Rhinebeck.
For over 20 years, Mr. Leary was a senior technologist with the Texaco Research Company in Beacon. Having retired in 1985. Previously he worked for over 10 years with the Aramco Corporation in Daharan, Saudi Arabia.
He was a communicant of Good Shepherd Church in Rhinebeck.
Mr. Leary served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 103rd Infantry Division of the 928th Field Artillery Battalion for the United States Army during World War II.
Born in Waterbury, CT on June 26th, 1923, he was the son of John J. and Gertrude Doherty Leary. He was a graduate of Yale, class of 1945w. He earned his masters from Stevens Institute in NJ. In 1947 he married Jayne Duffy at St. Mary's Church in New Haven, CT. Mrs. Leary survives at home in Rhinebeck.
Along with his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter in law: William C. & Joan Leary of Longwood, FL., and two daughters and son in
laws: Elizabeth J. & Roger Poe of Atlanta, GA and Pamela Leary & Dr. Paul Carroll of North Andover, MA. A sister: Gertrude Gerety of Windsor, CT., seven grandchildren: Erin & her husband Ricardo Ferranti, Amber and William Collin Poe, Catherine & Amy Leary, Cailly & Matthew Carroll, and one great grandson: Connor Ferranti also survive.
A sister, Ellen Behan, predeceased him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 31st, 2005 at 11:30 am at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Mulberry St., Rhinebeck. The Msgr. James Coleman will officiate.

Roma E. VanWagner, 86, of Tivoli, NY, died Friday, February 4, 2005 at her home.
Roma was a longtime member of the Harris Smith Post #429 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Tivoli, and served as the President for many years. She was also a past member of the Red Hook Post #7765 VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Red Hook, and of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Born August 7, 1918, in Schodack Landing, NY she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Helen (Simmons) Marks. Her first and her second husbands, Charles Leone and Robert VanWagner, predeceased her.
Roma is survived by a daughter & son-in-law: Anita & Ralph Walker of N. Syracuse, NY, a son & daughter-in-law: Charles & Susan Leone of Claverack, NY, a daughter: Dolly Krieger of Tivoli, a son & daughter-in-law: Robert T. & Jeanne VanWagner of Red Hook, a son & fiance: Kevin VanWagner & Wendy Zanck of Hyde Park, two sisters: Ada Pitcherell of Mechanicville, NY, and Barbara Eaton of Rhinebeck, 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 3 great, great grandchildren, and numerous nieces & nephews.
Two children, Helen Ann Leone and Joseph Anthony Leone, predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, Feb 8th, at St. Christopher's Church, Red Hook. Burial will be at Red Church Cemetery, Tivoli.

Churchill A. "Moe" Griffin

Churchill A. "Moe" Griffin, 84, a longtime area resident, died Tuesday, February 1st, 2005 at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck.
For many years, Mr. Griffin was a guard at Mills Mansion in Staatsburg and previously he worked as a cook with the New York Central Railroad. After his retirement from Mills Mansion, he became the night watchman at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck.
He served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II, having attained the rank of Sergeant. Mr. Griffin served in the South Pacific and Guadel Canal.
An avid golfer, he was a member of the Eastern Amateur Golf Association. He was a past member of the Rhinebeck-Red Hook #2022 BPOE, St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook and St. Sylvia's Church in Tivoli.
Born on June 12th, 1920, in Tivoli, he was the son of Michael T. & Helen Helgrin Griffin.
Two brothers survive him: Francis William Griffin of East Greenbush & Vincent Griffin of Red Hook. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Two sister's: Elizabeth Miller and Evelyn Murray, and five brother's: Daniel, Michael, Joseph, Charles & James Griffin, predecease him.

Graveside services and interment
in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Barrytown will take place in the spring and will be announced.

Kenneth Moore Hoagland
Rhinebeck, NY
Kenneth Moore Hoagland, 78, of Rhinebeck, died on Saturday, January 29, 2005 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.
He was born in Woodbridge, New Jersey, son of the late Lewis Perry Hoagland and Margaret Adele Wolfe. He was raised in Burlington, NJ on a farm. As a teen he was a snare drummer in the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps.
After attending the Army specialized training program in Niagara, New York, and airplane engine mechanic's school in Amarillo, Texas, Mr. Hoagland served in the Photo technical Squadron, 40th Bomb Wing, of the U. S. Army Air Corps. He was stationed in Erlanger, Germany in 1945-46 were he conducted aerial photoreconnaissance mapping. He received a World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and marksmanship badge. While in occupied Germany, he witnessed the Nuremberg Trials.
After graduating Rutgers University Summa Cum Laude in 1951 Mr. Hoagland was an estate manager for Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey in Pittsburgh and Maryland where he raised crops and chinchillas. He subsequently worked as a farm manager for state institutions in New Jersey, including Greystone Park, Rahway State Prison farm and Four Mile Colony farm in the Pine Barrens. In 1962 he joined the Campbell's Soup Company and became a fermentation research and flavor/spice chemist for 30 years before retiring.
In 1956 Mr. Hoagland married Frances Louise Schoch, of Delanco, New Jersey, who predeceased him in 1980. They had resided in Cranbury and Basking Ridge in New Jersey with their two sons.
Mr. Hoagland is survived by his brother, Lewis B. Hoagland, of Houston, Texas, his sons, Glenn, of Red Hook, NY, and Paul, of Cazenovia, NY, and four grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.

V. Bruce Gemmel

V. Bruce Gemmel, 78, a longtime Red Hook resident, died Wednesday, January 26th, 2005 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.
For over 25 years, he was an Engineer with IBM in Kingston and a member of their ¼ Century Club.
An avid archer and hunter, Mr. Gemmel also served as a boy scout leader and little league coach.
Born on November 27th, 1926, in Poughkeepsie, NY, he was the son of Jacob & Jeanette Reynolds Gemmel. His wife of 59 years, Gwendolyn Pulver Gemmel survives at home in Red Hook.
Along with his wife he is survived by a son and daughter in law: Steven & Linda Gemmel of Red Hook, a sister: Frances Lucas of Poughkeepsie, five grandchildren: Michael, Marissa & Daniel Gemmel of Red Hook, Hollie Lewison of Minnesota, & Jason Hagadorn of Germantown, NY, and two great grandchildren: Michael & Nicholas Lewison.
A brother, John Gemmel, predeceased him.
Funeral services will be held at 8:00 pm on Monday evening, January 31st, 2005 at the Burnett & White Funeral Home, 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook. Interment

Donald F. Allen, a lifetime Sullivan County resident passed away on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at the Ruth Taylor Institute at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. He was 75.
He was born on Oct. 2, 1929 in Glen Wild to the late Harry and Alice Keating Allen.
Donald was retired from his position at the Village of Monticello Highway Dept. He was an Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Hemmer Allen at home; 1 son, Donald F. Allen and his companion Mary Driscoll of Scranton, PA; 1 daughter, Karri Theis and her husband Brad of Bethel; 2 sisters, Barbara Galloway and her husband Robert of Walden, NY and Marjorie Diffendale and her husband Richard of Bloomingburg, NY; 4 grandchildren, Erin and Donald Allen of Liberty and Michael and Kelly Theis of Bethel and several nieces and nephews.

Eleanor Strong Asher, 85, of Rhinebeck, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at her home.
The daughter of Jacob Hill Strong and Jennie Underhill Shaw Strong, Mrs. Asher was born in Rhinebeck on October to, 1919. She was a graduate of Rhinebeck High School, Radcliffe College, and Katharine Gibbs School, Boston, MA.
Mrs. Asher was a member of Chancellor Livingston Chapter, DAR, and of Albany Colony, Society of Mayflower Descendants. At one time she was the president of the Board of Trustees of Starr Institute, Rhinebeck, as well as having served on the Board of Directors of the Dutchess County Historical Society, and of the Dutchess County Family Service Association.
She was a member of the Church of the Messiah and attended the Reformed Church of Rhinebeck in later years.
On December 30, 1944, she married Robert Wilson Asher. Mr. Asher survives at home in Rhinebeck
Mrs. Aher is also survived by a son, Jonathan Radcliffe Asher, and a daughter, WfB. Sarah Scarpino, four grandsons, one granddaughter, two nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. A brother, Jacob Hill Strong, Jr., died in 1958.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be conducted at the
convenience of the family.

Elsie M. Lown, 103, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2005, at the Baptist Home, Rhinebeck.
Mrs. Lown was a 63 year member of the Rhinebeck Grange #896, as well as having been a active member of the Dutchess County Pamona Grange #32, the New York State Grange and the National Grange. She had served as Lecture for the Rhinebeck Grange and as Flag Bearer for the Pamona Grange. Mrs. Lown was a member of the Reformed Church of Rhinebeck.
She had been employed at Schatz Federal Bearing and Dutchess Manufacturing.
Mrs. Lown’s husband, Ernest Lown, a violet grower and florist in Rhinebeck, passed away March 27, 1966.
Born April 25, 1901 in Hyde Park, she was the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Davey) Lawson.
Mrs. Lown is survived by a nephew Gerard Sprague of Poughkeepsie and many friends and relatives including her friend John Finegan with whom she corresponded often. She was predeceased by a sister Dorothy A. VanVakenberg.

Joseph L. Mure´, 54, of Tivoli, NY, died Monday, 1/24/2005 at the Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY.
Chef Muré is an assistant professor in culinary arts in The Culinary Institute of America's (CIA) Education Division. A 1974 graduate of the CIA, Chef Muré currently was teaching Lunch Cookery in the college’s degree programs, where students practice the skills necessary to prepare lunch in a foodservice operation and serve breakfast entrees to fellow students and faculty.
Chef Muré was trained to serve as chef-instructor for The Caterina de Medici Dining Room, one of the college's four student-staffed public restaurants. He previously administered the Second-Semester and Fifth-Semester Practical Examinations, taught Breakfast Cookery, Introduction to Hot Foods, and Culinary Skills Development 1 and 2 classes.
Before returning to his alma mater in 1984, Chef Muré held a number of key positions in New York and Florida, including: executive chef at the Boulderberg Manor in Tomkins Cove, NY; the Dockside Inn in Stuart, FL; Howard's Restaurant and Ye Peasant's Pot in New City, NY; and Bruno's in Hyde Park, NY.
Chef Muré also demonstrated food preparation for Abraham & Straus department stores in Woodbridge, NJ, and in White Plains, NY. He has served as a consultant and chef-instructor for the Burdick Career Center in Washington, DC; and the Bahamian Hotel Institute in Nassau, Bahamas. Chef Muré is a partner in DiPerri & Muré Consulting & Catering, an off-premise catering & consulting operation specializing in food and service for all occasions. Chef Muré is a Certified Hospitality Educator (C.H.E).
Born on July 26th, 1950, in Bronx, NY, he was the son of Frank and Jean Sapio Mure’ of Stuart, FL.
Joseph married Virginia Porcelli and she survives at home.
Along with his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter: Casey Ellis and her husband James Harvell of Tivoli, NY, a sister and brother in law: Joanne & Ken Swider of Stuart, FL, and a grandson, Gavin Harvell of Tivoli, NY, and a niece: Kristina Swider of Stuart, FL.

Born on June 7th, 1942, in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of James and Regina Fisher.
Ellen married Bernard O´Neill and he survives at home in Red Hook.
Along with her husband, she is survived by three daughters: Rita O'Neill of Sarasota, FL, Heather Hieronymi of Saratoga, NY, Siobahn Smith of Craryville, NY, and three sons: Kevin O'Neill of Red Hook, NY, Brian O'Neill of Rhinebeck, NY, Thomas O´Neill of Red Hook, NY. Her grandchildren, Kasey, Jeremy & Courtney O'Neill; Matthew & Sophie Hieronymi; and Damian Smith also survive.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 27th at St. Sylvia's Cemetery, Tivoli, NY. The Reverend Fred C. Cartier of will officiate. Burial will be at St. Sylvia's Cemetery, Tivoli.

Elsa was a life member of Harris Smith Post 524 American Legion, Ladies Auxiallary in Tivoli
Born on August 19th, 1917, in Trenton, NJ, she was the daughter of George and Olga (Carl) Schaeffer.
Survived by one daughter: Leona McLaughlin of Tivoli, NY, a grandson; William D'Attore of Clinton, NY; and two great grandchildren, Jesse & McKenna D'Attore.

Theresa A. Flood, 90, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2005, at her home in Rhinebeck.
Born November, 18, 1914 in New York City, she was the daughter of Mamie (Dippenworth) Baum Hannafin and Morris Baum.
On September 1, 1935 at Our Lady of Victory Church, Mt. Vernon, she married Joseph J. Flood. Mr. Flood passed away May 5, 1988.
Mrs. Flood was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, Mt. Vernon, before moving to Rhinebeck in 1981.
She is survived by a son Kenneth C., and his wife Peggy Jean Flood, of Rhinebeck; a daughter Ellen, and her husband Gordon Prout, of Rhinebeck; a brother William C. Baum of Cary, NC; 6 Grandchildren, Susan Belcher, Jean Flood, Kristine McMichael and Douglas Prout of Rhinebeck, Kevin Flood of Rochester, NY, and Joseph Prout of Hudson, NY; 7 Great Grandchildren, Joseph Adamo, Angela Adamo, Brianne Flood, Ricky Prout, Nicole Prout, Blake McMichael and Grace McMichael, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother John Baum.

Inge Edelmann

Inge Edelmann, 69, passed away Friday, January 21, 2005, at the Northern Dutchess Hospital.
Mrs. Edlemann was an Insurance Agent with Budd and Sipperly Insurance and most recently with Mangi & Ryan Insurance Co., Red Hook
She was an avid gardener and bowled for many years at the 9 G Lanes.
Born April 8, 1935 in Miesau, Germany, she was the daughter of Albert and Hilda (Pfaff) Roland.
On October 20, 1956 in Miesau she married Peter C. Edelmann.
Mrs. Edelmann is survived by her husband Peter of Red Hook, a brother Heiner Roland of Miesau, Germany, and a nephew, and godson, Jurgen Roland of Miesau, Germany. She was predeceased on April 7, 2002 by a niece Ruth Dosch.
