JACOB ORTIZ
Services for Jacob Ortiz, 71, of Westland were Monday, April 22, from St. Theodore Church in Westland.
Mr. Ortiz was born June 4, 1930, in Detroit and died April 18 at home. He was employed as a hi-lo driver for the food industry.
He is survived by his wife, Alma E.; daughters, Frieda A. (Dennis) Phy and Jacquelyn S. (Harvey) Peterson; sons, Jacob R. (Debbie) and Aaron A.; five brothers; four sisters; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by L.J. Griffin Funeral Home.

WILLIAM JAMES EDGAR
Services for William James Edgar, 65, of Westland were Thursday, April 18, at Vermeulen Funeral Home in Westland. The Rev. Larry Bartlett officiated.
Mr. Edgar was born June 18, 1936, in Escanaba, Mich., and died April 15 in Wayne. He was employed as an assembly worker for Ford Motor Co.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the Vietnam War. Mr. Edgar was an Independent Baptist and belonged to the Prayer Baptist Church.
He is survived by his stepmother, Mabel Edgar of Lansing; sisters, Marilyn Bruce of Westland, Kathy (Dave) Clark of Chelsea, Mich., Pat (Lorne) Springs of Yuma, Ariz., and Phiannon McBride of Chelsea; and brother, Jack Britton of Oscoda, Mich.
Burial was at Cadillac Memorial Gardens West in Westland. Memorials are suggested to Prayer Baptist Church, 855 Edwin, Westland 48185.
Arrangements were by Vermeulen Funeral Home.

ADA ALEXANDER
A Celebration of Life Service for Ada Alexander, 83, of Canton will be 1 p.m. Friday, April 19, in Bell-Borek Funeral Home, Hamburg Chapel, with burial at Highland Cemetery. Officiating will be Ken McMullen. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today, Thursday, April 18, in the chapel, and 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, until time of service.
Mrs. Alexander was born April 21, 1918, in Vincennes, Ind., and died April 16 in Howell. She was a longtime resident of Canton. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are her children, Harold Alexander of Brighton, Geneva (Thomas) McMullen of Hartland and Juanita (Douglas) Davis of Westland; siblings, Helen Gribble, Violet Conant, Leo, Harold, Henry and Francis Hall; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her husband, Hobart, in 1955, and eight siblings.

CATHERINE E. SPAULDING
A funeral Mass for Catherine Spaulding, 96, of Westland was April 15 in St. Mary Catholic Church with burial at St. Mary Cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. Jack Baker.
Mrs. Spaulding died April 11.
Surviving are her children, Robert (Barb), Betty Lou (John) Talaga, Mary (John) Clute, Evelyn (Lowell) Kiester and Richard (Carol); 28 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Spaulding was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin, in 1945, and by children James, Jerry and Norma Jean.
Arrangements were made by Harry J. Will Funeral Home, Wayne.

JAMES E. HELMER
Services for James Helmer, 58, of Pittsford were April 16 in Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home, Hudson. Officiating was the Rev. Mark Johnston. Interment was made in Berg Cemetery at Montgomery with Military Rites by the Hannan-Colvin Post No. 180, American Legion of Hudson in charge.
Mr. Helmer was born Feb. 7, 1944, in Hillsdale and died April 13 in Westland. He lived most of his life in the Detroit and Downriver areas and was a graduate of Wayne Memorial High School. He was employed as a computer technician at Ford Motor Co. in Wayne and Brownstown 37 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Green Beret Special Forces.
Surviving are his son, James Jr. of Waterford; father, Harry Helmer of Pittsford; mother, Frances Helmer of Westland; brothers, Larry (Sue) Helmer of Westland and Dennis Helmer of Monroe; sisters, Sharon (Gary) David of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Linda (Gerry) Johnson of Horton and Diana Gasek of Ypsilanti and half-brother, Steven Helmer of Crystal Lake, Somerset Township.
Memorials are suggested to Arbor Hospice. Envelopes are available at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home, 504 W. Main, Hudson.

MARY V. JOHNSTON
Services for Mary Johnston, 87, of Westland were April 16 in L.J. Griffin Funeral Home with burial at Cadillac Memorial Gardens West, Westland.
Mrs. Johnston was born Sept. 4, 1914, in Detroit and died April 13 at her home in Westland. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are her daughter, Shirley (Ronald) Milliman; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel.

WARREN I. CRANDELL
Warren I. Crandell, 81, of Westland died April 8 in Westland.
Mr. Crandell was born July 4, 1920, in Detroit. He was a salesman.
Surviving are his nephew, Douglas Everly of Westland, and niece, Michelle Everly of Taylor.
Arrangements were made by Vermaulen Funeral Home.

ALBERT WILLIAM NEW JR.
Services for former Wayne resident Albert New Jr., 80, of Coldwater were April 11 in Uht Funeral Home with burial at Parkview Memorial Cemetery, Livonia. Officiating was the Rev. James Severance.
Mr. New was born July 15, 1921, and died April 8 in Coldwater. He was an engineer.
Surviving are his wife, Geraldine; children, Albert (Sandra) New III, Louis (MaryAnn) New, Carole (Will) Burrick of Westland and Patricia (Tony) Moore; sisters, Dorothy (Francis) Whelan and Lavina (Norval) Doddridge 15 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
Mr. New was preceded in death by his son, Gerald (Carol) New.

RITA J. MACK
Services for Rita Mack, 66, of Plymouth were April 12 in St. Kenneth Catholic Church with burial at Riverside Cemetery, Plymouth. Officiating was the Rev. Joseph Mallia.
Mrs. Mack was born Oct. 15, 1935, in Kingston, Pa., and died April 8 in Livonia. She was a homemaker. She came to the Plymouth community from Detroit in 1966. She was a member of St. Kenneth Catholic Church in Plymouth Township.
Surviving are her children, Jim (Dawn) Mack of Westland, Larry Mack of Northville, Joan (Mike) Quigley of Plymouth, Lori (Rick) Blandford of Canton and Jeff (Maria) Mack of Westland; sisters, Carol (Brian) Fox of Livonia and Barbara (Richard) Gdowski of Taylor; and nine grandchildren.
Memorial tributes may be made to American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society.

ANNE S. PEACOCK

Mrs. Peacock was born Jan. 10, 1939, in Detroit and died April 9 at her home in Westland. She was a meat clerk for a grocery store.
Surviving are her son, Robert; daughter, Elizabeth (Mark) Rupert; other children, Shelly, Patty, Denise, Donna, Matt and Don; brothers, David and Richard Williams; grandchildren, Nicole and Mark II; special grandchildren, Kaylonda, Angela and Devon; and four great-grandchildren, John Jr., Lori and Owen.

MICHAEL R. RETTIG
Services for Michael Rettig, 43, of Westland were April 3 in St. Damian Catholic Church with burial at Glen Eden Memorial Cemetery, Livonia.
Mr. Rettig was born Jan. 7, 1959, in Garden City and died March 30 at his home in Westland. He was an accountant for the automotive industry.
Surviving are his parents, Rollin and Ina; brothers, Philip (Anne), David (Johnna) and Geoffrey (Sheila); sister, Jennifer; grandmother, Audrey; and nieces and nephews, Meaghan, Stephen, Allison, Eric, Julia, Andrew and John.

JOYCE M. ESPER
Services for Joyce Esper, 71, of Westland were April 6 in St. Aidan Catholic Church, Livonia, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
Mrs. Esper was born July 28, 1930, in Detroit and died April 2 at her home in Westland. She was an administrative assistant in the medical field.
Surviving are her children, Denise (Ross) Kennedy, Claudia Horn, Michael (Jennifer), Pamela and Jeffrey; brother, Robert Campbell; and six grandchildren.

WALTER TRESH JR.
Services for Walter Tresh Jr., 76, of Westland were April 8 in St. Damian Catholic Church with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
Mr. Tresh was born Dec. 16, 1925, in Wall, Pa., and died April 4 in Southfield. He was a truck driver. He was a World War II veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Susie; sons, James (Jennifer) and Perry (Mary); sister, Helen Kriger; and four grandchildren.

GEORGE G. SYMANNS

Mr. Symanns was born July 7, 1951, in Detroit and died April 7 in Garden City. He was a production technician.
Surviving are his brother, Cliff (Carol); nieces and nephews, Chris (Kim), Jennifer and Kristine; and great-niece and nephew, Katlin and Zachary.

Sandra Helen Lindley
Services for Sandra Helen Lindley, 53 of Westland were held Dec. 20 in Uht Funeral Home of Westland with Rev. Bob McDonald officiating.
Sandra Lindley was born August 13, 1949. She died Dec. 18, 2002, in Westland. She was a waitress.
She is survived by her companion and soulmate Chuck Cook; stepsons Allen Lindley and Michael Lindley; brothers Robert Wozny and Daniel (Mary) Wozny; nephews Justice Wozny, Jay Wozny, Thomas Wozny, Dustin Rokita and Zachary Rokita; niece Honesty Wozny; and cherished loved ones Me-Ma, Susan, Andrea, Pamela and Erica.

Lewis J. Vanderbeck
Services for Lewis J. Vanderbeck, 95, of Westland were held Dec. 24 in the chapel of the L.J. Griffin Funeral Home. Pastor Robert Beddingfield of First Baptist Church of Riverview officiated. Burial was at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Vanderbeck was born May 9, 1907, in Hamlin, N.Y. He died Dec. 21, 2002, in Westland. He was a piano teacher for 50 years.
He is survived by wife Gertrude, daughter Sue Ann (Richard E.) Vanderbeck Lenz, two brothers and one sister.

William J. Huggins
Services for William J. Huggins, 76, of Westland will be held Dec. 27 in Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Redford with Rev. Robert F. Goudie officiating. Burial will follow at Parkview Memorial.
Mr. Huggins was born Sept. 28, 1926, in River Rouge. He died on Dec. 23, 2002, in Dearborn Heights. He worked in production for the automotive industry.
He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis.
Surviving are sons William J. (Judy) Huggins Jr. and Keith S. (Bonnie) Huggins; daughters Kathryn M. Pearson, Elizabeth A. Sharp, Wanda L. Huggins, Frances J. Huggins and Susan K. Huggins; two brothers, four sisters and 10 grandchildren.

Dale Richard Johnson
