Ida Mentzer, 89, of Brighton, formerly of Birmingham, died Nov. 9, 2002, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital . She was born Jan. 30, 1913, in Columbus, Ohio.
Mrs. Mentzer graduated from Ohio State University, where she was a member of Alpha Phi sorority. She retired from Clawson School District in 1978 as an elementary art teacher. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brighton and Birmingham; the MEA; Alpha Phi and the Ohio State University Alumni Association.
She is survived by children, Cynthia R. (Lon) Ernest of Howell and John C. of Troy; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Frances Anne Annett
Frances Annett, 84, of Beverly Hills, died Nov. 18, 2002.
She is survived by sons, Bruce, Jr. (Amy) and Roy (Bonnie).

Robert E. Van Cleave
Robert Van Cleave, 75, of Beverly Hills, died Nov. 18, 2002, at Wm. Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. He was born February 28, 1927 in Midlothian, Ill.
Mr. Van Cleave attended John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II. He was formerly a sales executive for CKLW & WXYZ Radio and WDIV-TV. He retired after fifteen years as a sales executive for Group W-Westinghouse. He was a member of the DAC; past Commodore of the Detroit Yacht Club; active with St. Regis Church Ushers Club. He enjoyed his grandchildren, golf and was a huge U of M football fan.
He is survived by children, Marcie Van Cleave, Kirk (Brandye D'Lena), Gretchen (Michael) Monette; grandchildren, Jeremy, Andrea and Aubrey.

Albert Craig Colburn
Albert Colburn, 41, of Berkley, died Oct. 26, 2002, at home. He was born March 22, 1951.
Mr. Colburn was a graduate of Seaholm High School. He attended Central Michigan University. He was a member of SAL, Berkley American Legion No. 374. He was employed by Commonwealth Industry, Detroit.
He is survived by children, Albert (Mandy) of Madison Heights and Brandy (Tim) McDonald of Escanaba; three grandchildren; parents, Albert and Margaret of Berkley, formerly of Birmingham; siblings, Marlene McBride of Manistee and Linda Weir of Troy; many nieces and nephews; two great-nieces and two great-nephews.
Cremation arrangements were handled by Sawyer-Fuller Funeral Home in Berkley. Inurnment at Roseland Cemetery in Berkley. Memorial tributes may be made to the Cancer Society.

Josephine Mae Cohagen
Josephine Cohagen, 83, of Bloomfield Township, died Nov. 18, 2002, at Wm. Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. She was born Sept. 10, 1919 in Poe, Ind.
Mrs. Cohagen was a 50-year resident of Bloomfield Township. She was a member of Franklin Community Church in Franklin; Bloomfield Garden Club; Dearborn China Painters; and the Detroit Gun Club. She was an avid gardener and crafts person.
She is survived by children, Marsha Reid of Waterford, Pamela Sullivan of Commerce, Arturo Eden of Novi, and Donald, Jr. of Farmington; nine grandchildren; four brothers and one sister.

Peter J. Sullivan
Peter Sullivan, 79, of Birmingham, died Nov. 13, 2002, at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. He was born March 31, 1923, in Chicago.
Mr. Sullivan served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked for 47 years at Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He was charitable to various organizations.
He is survived by wife, Kathleen; children, Mary (Bryn) Jessup, James (Joan), Robert (Janice), Jack (Hiroko), Ann, Thomas and Matthew (Kathy); 11 grandchildren.

Alma M. Talbot
Alma Talbot, 84, of Arlington, Texas, formerly of Birmingham, died Nov. 20, 2002, in Texas. She was born July 18, 1918.
Mrs. Talbot is survived by sons, Ronald and Arthur of Bloomfield Hills; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
A private service was held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Merrill, Wis. Memorial tributes may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Caroline Cowley Davison
Caroline Davison, 96, of Waterford, formerly of Birmingham, died Nov. 22, 2002. She was born in Detroit in 1906.
Mrs. Davison graduated from Detroit's Northwestern High School and Detroit Teacher's College. She taught at Cook Elementary School in Detroit. She was a member of Saint James Episcopal Church in Birmingham and the Saint Elizabeth's Guild. She had been a life-long member of the Women's National Farm and Garden Association and a volunteer in many organizations related to conservation and ecology, areas which were her passion.
Memorial tributes may be made to Canterbury-on-the-Lake, 5601 Hatchery Road, Waterford, Mich., where a flower garden will be dedicated to her memory, or to St. James Episcopal Church, Hospice of Michigan, 400 Mack Avenue, Detroit, Mich. 48201 or Alzheimer's Association (Greater Michigan Chapter, Detroit Area), 17220 West 12 Mile Road, Southfield, Mich. 48076.

Kenneth Arden Bateman
Kenneth Bateman, 87, of Birmingham, died November 22, 2002, at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. He was born July 9, 1915, in Denton, Texas.
Mr. Bateman was a retired principal from Tyler School, Livonia Public Schools. He once worked in Washington, D.C., with the U.S. Education Office, Division of International Education as senior specialist in international education and Wayne State University's Department of Elementary Education and educational sociology.
He is survived by wife, Virginia Darlene Hasselquist; children, Keith T. (Susan) of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Kim S. (Frances J.) of Huntington Woods; grandchildren, Karl K., Virginia J., Leigh R. and Carrie (Greg) Palmer.

Joseph J. Maloney
Joseph Maloney, 89, of Bloomfield Hills, died Nov. 22, 2002, at Wm. Beaumont Hospital, Troy. He was born Nov. 15, 1913, in Detroit.
Mr. Maloney graduated from St. Theresa High School in Detroit, University of Detroit and the U of D Law School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He belonged to the Law Firm of Conklin and Maloney in the Guardian Building, Detroit. He was a founding member of St. Regis Parish, Bloomfield Hills; the Michigan Bar Association and had been a member of ther Brother Rice High School Dad's Club.
He is survived by sons, Joseph, Jr. (Noreen) and John W. (Pat).

Archie G. Bliesath
Archie Bliesath, 72, of Hubbard Lake, Mich., and Okeechobee, Fla., formerly of Clawson, died Oct. 27, 2002, in Florida. He was born Feb. 8, 1930. in Pontiac.
Mr. Bliesath graduated from Baldwin High School in Birmingham. He was part-owner of Birmingham Water Softener Service in Birmingham for a number of years. He was a private airplane pilot; a member of The Quiet Birdman (QB) in the Stuart, Florida Hangar.
He is survived by wife, Miriam; children, Cecily of Royal Oak, Lynn (Philip) Hodson of Chicago, ILL. and David (Denice) of Westland; grandchildren, James, Charlie, Caroline and Jack; and sisters, Trilby Sternal of Berkley, Kenya (Jerry) Mayle of Southfield and Cheryl Chadwick of Tuscon, Ariz.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Wm. R. Hamilton Funeral Home in Birmingham. Interment at Toledo Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Sylvania, Ohio. Memorial tributes may be made to the American Diabetes Association, The American Heart Association or a charity of donor's choice.

William I. Taylor
William Taylor, 76, of Williamsburg, formerly of Bloomfield Hills, died Oct. 28, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
Mr. Taylor was a retired advertising executive for Ross-Roy in Detroit.
He is survived by wife, Joy; children, Christopher (Marcia), Jonathan (Janet), Timothy (Heidi); step-children, Victoria (Gregory) Supina, and Ernest (Iris) Rust; and nine grandchildren.

Robert A. Borkowski
Robert Borkowski, 75, of Brighton, formerly of Milford and Harper Woods, died Oct. 23, 2002, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born Feb. 18, 1927 in Detroit.
Mr. Borkowski was a United States Navy veteran. He attended Wilbur Wright High School in Detroit. He was a retired Tool & Die Maker from Dodge Main in Hamtramck. He had also worked for B & K Hydraulic in Livonia. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Brighton and also active at St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows in Milford. He enjoyed golfing, water skiing and doing major home remodeling projects. He had volunteered to construct playscapes in downtown Brighton.
Mr. Borkowski is survived by wife, Jeremiah M.; sons, Duane E. of Plymouth and Bradley A. of Bloomfield Hills.

Cal Cooke
Cal Cooke, 50, of Berkley, died Oct. 5, 2002. He was born April 24, 1952, in Columbus, Ohio.
Mr. Cooke was a long-time employee of Alban's Bottle & Basket in Birmingham. He was an expert in wines and spirits. He was also an avid private pilot and outdoorsman.
He is survived by parents, Robert and Phyllis of Sun City West, Ariz.; and brothers, Ken of San Diego, Calif., David of Elmhurst, Ill., and Daniel of Newburgh, N.Y.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 9 at the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham, 1589 West Maple, Birmingham. Memorial tributes may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Dorothea Elizabeth Schulz Thompson
Dorothea Thompson, 86, of Red Bank, N.J., formerly of Bloomfield Hills, died Oct. 29, 2002, in Brighton Gardens, Middleton. She was born in Bad Axe.
Mrs. Thompson was a graduate of Flint High School. She was an active choir mother of the Westminister Presbyterian Church in Detroit. She played a key role in the Harps Restoration at Cass Technical High School, Detroit. She was an avid music lover, dancer and artist.
She is survived by daughters, Camille Thompson and Marilyn Lentz of Red Bank, N.J.

Billie J. Martin
Billie Martin, 82, of Beverly Hills, died Oct. 29, 2002, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was born Dec. 3, 1919 in Wyatt, West Virginia.
Mr. Martin served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was an active member of the VFW Lyskawa Post 7546 in Dearborn Heights, where he served as past president of the Michigan Chapter of the 9th Division and on the governing board of the National 9th Association. He was a 42-year employee of the Detroit Free Press in the mail department. He enjoyed walking, photography and music.
He is survived by wife, Marilyn; children, Susan Martin, Linda (Robert) Jorden, Jerry (Janeen) Emrick; grandchildren, Jeff, David, Will, Laura; great-grandchildren, Kaylin, Noah and Jacob.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Lynch & Sons Funeral Home in Clawson. Entombment at Glen Eden Cemetery, Livonia. Memorial tributes may be made to Hospice of Integrated Health Services Foundation.

Tony V. Zemaitis
Tony Zemaitis, 57, of Bloomfield Hills, died Oct. 30, 2002, at home. He was born Sept. 16, 1945 in Moosburg, Germany.
Mr. Zemaitis graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. He was a mechanical engineer for Delco Remy America in Troy for eight years. He was very active in his neighborhood association. He loved tennis and golf.
He is survived by wife, Sherry Lee; sister, Aldona Bielskus (Mindowgus) of Berwin, Ill.; sister-in-law, Debby Zemaitis of Lake Orion.

E. Mae Hickey
E. Mae Hickey, 76, of Beverly Hills, died Nov. 1, 2002 at home. She was born June 9, 1926 in Townley, Alabama.
Mrs. Hickey was a former manicurist at The Golden Razor at Towne Center in Southfield. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.
She is survived by children, Bill, Pat, Terry (Bob) Bedzyk, Maureen (Steve) Herta and John; grandchildren, Bill, Ryan, Katie, P.J., Tess, Lisa, Kelly, Sara and Melissa; sister, Hazel Hagood.
Funeral service is at noon, Monday, Nov. 4 at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward Avenue, Royal Oak. Family will receive friends Sunday 2-7 p.m. Rosary Sunday, at 2 p.m. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

Madeline E. Chapman
Madeline Chapman, 98, of Berkley, died Nov. 2, 2002, at home.
Mrs. Chapman is survived by children, Alfred H. (Marie) and Joyce (Robert) Gipner, daughter-in-law, Jean Chapman; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 202 East 5th Street, Royal Oak. A private committal service will be held. Memorial tributes may be sent to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Margaretta C. Higgins
Margaretta Higgins, 99, of Birmingham, died Nov. 1, 2002, at home. She was born Dec. 28, 1902 in Detroit.
Mrs. Higgins was a graduate of the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Detroit; Manhattanville College, New York and the University of Michigan. She was a retired teacher and counselor at Western High School in Detroit for 30 years. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Birmingham Branch; Detroit Athletic Club; Detroit Boat Club; Notre Dame Club of Detroit (also was on the advisory council of Snite Museum of the Art at Notre Dame; member of the University of Michigan Alumnae Association; The Village Club; Founders Society of Detroit Institute of Arts. She was also a supporter of the Detroit Symphony, Birmingham Community House, Pontiac Rescue Mission and Gleaners Food Bank.

Catherine C. "Kay" Healey
Catherine Healey, 85, of Bloomfield Hills, died Nov. 4, 2002 at Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was born Nov. 9, 1916, in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Mrs. Healey graduated from Northwestern University. She was a volunteer nurse's aide during World War II. She was a retired vice president of her late husband's business, W.E. Healy and Associates (Engineered Fire Protection). She was an active member of St. Hugo of the Hills Church in Bloomfield Hills; member, golfer and historian of Oakland Hills Country Club; member of the Women's District Gold Association; oil painting artist and member of the Birmingham-Bloomfield Art Center. She enjoyed bridge, gardening and travel.
She is survived by children, William Douglas and Margaret M. "Peggy" (Daniel) Keehner; grandchildren, Philip M. and Brian W.; brother, Dr. Harold A.(Betty) Streit; and loving friend, Merton J. Bell.

Peter Schubeck
Peter Schubeck, 84, of Birmingham, died. He was born Dec. 3, 1917, in Pennsylvania.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the South Pacific Island of Palau and Guam, attaining rank of chief petty officer. He graduated from University of Wisconsin and went to work for General Motors Truck and Coach.
Mr. Schubeck enjoyed baseball, golf, bridge, dancing, music(singing) and bowling. He participated in Babe Ruth Baseball, presiding over youth baseball and helping his sons excel at the game.
He is survived by wife, Gerry; children, Geraldine, Kathyrn, Peter, Jr., William and Steve; grandchildren, John, Jody, Jim, Amanda, Tyler, Mesa, Fiona and Mira.

Maria M. Schneider
Maria Schneider, 95, of Bloomfield Hills, formerly of Harsens Island, died Nov. 24, 2002, at Bloomfield Hills Care Center. She was born Jan. 9, 1907 in Breslau, Germany.
Mrs. Schneider immigrated to the United States in 1929. She and her husband were Houseparents for the Detroit Catholic Kolping Society, a boarding house for unmarried Catholic men similar to the YMCA. She did the cooking and cleaning. She enjoyed her home, (a renovated cottage) on Harsens Island.
She is survived by son, Manfred (Lotte) Muehmel; grandchildren, Michael, Ronald and John; six great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by A.J. Desmond Funeral Home, Royal Oak. Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit.

Lloyd S. Rose
Lloyd Rose, 35, of Portland, Maine, formerly of Detroit, died Nov. 16, 2002. He was born May 24, 1967 in Shreveport, La.
He graduated from Birmingham Seaholm High School. He was employed at Tom's Steamers and One Twenty Three both in Groose Pointe, the Money Tree and Machus Adams Square in Birmingham.
He loved the outdoors and exploring undeveloped areas; had few material attachments; was interested in sustainable living and Eastern philosophy.
He is survived by parents, Lewis and Claudia of Enosburg Falls, Vt.; sisters, Gail (Doug) Goldsmith of Burlington, Vt. and Karen Anderson of Westport, Conn., aunts, cousins and many friends.

Robert J. Zolad
Robert Zolad, 87, of Bloomfield Hills, died Nov. 24, 2002, at Woodward Hills Nursing Home, Bloomfield Hills. He was born May 24, 1915 in Chicago.
Mr. Zolad graduated from the University of Chicago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired in 1972 after 23 years as a manager of communications and data processing for Ford Motor Co. After retirement, he was an associate professor at Oakland University School of Business.He was a life member of Michigan Association of CPA's; a member of the Village Club and Heathers Club. He enjoyed his grandchildren and golf.
He is survived by wife, Eileen C.; children, Laurey Z. Thomas, James R. and Mary Beth (John) Anderson; grandchildren, Allison, Michael, Elise and Caroline; and brother, John J. (Ethele).

Angeline Lucking McGregor
Angeline McGregor, 91, of Birmingham, died Nov. 18, 2002, at Lourdes Nursing Home in Waterford. She was born March 13, 1911, in Osceola County, Mich.
Mrs. McGregor attended business colleges in both Detroit and Battle Creek. She was a secretary with the Grand Trunk Railroad at Battle Creek for seventeen years and then retired from The Ford Motor Company, Dearborn after 25 years as an executive secretary. After retiring she became active with the National Association of Investments, serving as secretary and treasurer. She was also an active member of the 88ers Musical of the Metro Area.
She is survived by children, Rodger P. (Camille) Lucking of Wood Haven, Donald E. (Suzanne) Lucking of West Bloomfield; grandchildren, Christopher, Jason, Elizabeth and Matthew; five great-grandchildren.
