Beverly Aten, 72, of Bloomfield Hills, died April 13, 2002, at home. She was born September 29, 1929 in Detroit.
Mrs. Aten graduated from Oakland University and University of Michigan. She was a retired social worker from Providence Hospital in Southfield. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and the Franklin Garden Club.
Mrs. Aten is survived by children, Cathy of Santa Fe, N.M., Jennifer (Rob) Kass of Hillsborough, N.J., R. Scott (Maureen) of Flagstaff, Ariz. and Peter (Carol) of Exeter, N.H.; grandchildren, Kelsey Aten, Jason Kass, Sean Aten, Alex Kass, Conner Aten and Grace Aten; and brothers, Macauley Whiting of Sun Valley, Idaho, Henry Whiting, Jr. of Birmingham and Peter Whiting of Palm Beach, Fla.

JOSEPH A. LOKAR "JESS"
Joseph Lokar, 95, of Beverly Hills, died April 15, 2002, at Providence Hospital in Southfield. He was born January 3, 1907 in Calumet, Mich.
Mr. Lokar was retired from the Prudential Insurance Company after 35 years as an Insurance Salesman. He previously worked for Strohs Brewery. He was an active and founding member of St. Ives Catholic Church in Southfield and active in several civic organizations. Mr. Lokar enjoyed gardening, handywork and golf.
He is survived by children, Dr. Robert R. (Madeline), Paul J. (Mary), and Beverly Cole; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Fred (Mae) and John.

VIRGINIA ANN VOSS
Virginia Voss of Birmingham died on March 28, 2002 at home.
She graduated from Royal Oak High School, attended the University of Michigan and Albion College. Following study at the Alliance Francaise in France, she obtained her bachelor of arts from Albion College and did graduate work in education at MSU.
Mrs. Voss was a retired educator for Pembroke School, Pierce, and Harlan schools in Birmingham. An avid traveler, she had lived in Switzerland, visited much of the United States and several countries in Europe. She was a member of the Birmingham branch of the American Association of University Women, the Birmingham Alumnae Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and the Birmingham Area Seniors Coordinating Council and Center. She also did volunteer work for the Oakland Literacy Council. She enjoyed children, art, investing, reading, and collectibles collecting.
Mrs. Voss is survived by her two sons, Gregory of Toulouse, France and Geoffrey of Birmingham and her brother, Ned Besemer of Atlanta, Ga.

WILLIAM ANTHONY DARIN, SR.
William Darin, Sr., 71, of Birmingham and Bonita Springs, Fla., died on April 6, 2002, at his Florida residence. He was born in 1931 in Detroit.
Mr. Darin attended Gesu Elementary, Culver Academy, New Hampton Prep School and University of Detroit and Albion Colleges. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
He went to work for his father's construction company, Darin and Armstrong Inc., as a project engineer, rising to the position of vice president of Construction and Board of Directors member. He also served as General Manager of their New Hudson yard operations. Some of the noteworthy projects for which he shared responsibility included: EPCOT Center, Fla., Deaconess, Beaumont and Mt. Carmel Hospitals, as well as new plant work at Ford Rouge, General Motors Diesel and Chrysler Highland Park. He was also involved with the building of new plants for Caterpillar Tractor in Illinois. He belonged to the Board of Directors and Committee member for Associated General Contractors (Detroit Chapter) and St. Francis Boys Home. He was a member of St. Regis Church in Birmingham and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Naples, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Joan; children, Bill Jr. (Laurie), Mark (Kathy), Jeff, Lynn (Jeff) Stachel and Melissa (Nick) Everard-Welsch; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation and a celebratory Mass of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, April 21, at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, 1250 Kensington Road, Bloomfield Hills. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. with Mass at 3 p.m. and a dinner reception to follow.

JAMES HENRY SKINNER
James Skinner, 82, of Frederick, Md., died on April 7, 2002, at the Sunrise Retirement Center. He was born on August 12, 1919 in Nova Scotia, Canada.
He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Army where he received various medals. Mr. Skinner was a retired General Manager and Engineer for Federal Screw Works in Romulus. While employed there, he had two fastener patents. He enjoyed working as a volunteer for the police department while in Michigan and was an avid golfer, having had two holes in one.
Mr. Skinner is survived by three children; David E. of Birmingham, Kathleen S. Allardyce of Germantown, Md. and Lynn S. Lukas of Peachtree City, Ga.; a sister Margaret Buchan of Sun City, Ariz.; and friend and Care Manager, Heather Barnes.

James Montgomery, 86, of Peachtree City, Ga. and Rapid City, died on April 4, 2002.
Mr. Montgomery was retired from the H.A. Montgomery Chemical Co.

Philip Bell, 58, of Fort Meyers, Fla., formerly of Birmingham, died April 18, 2002 at home. He was born July 21, 1943 in Pontiac.
Mr. Bell worked with his parents at the Bell Greenhouse and Florist in Birmingham until it was sold in the 1980s. He then worked at Secret Garden Floral in Auburn Hills until he moved to Fla. recently.
He is survived by his children, Kiersten K. Plymale of Northville, Mich., Samantha C. Brush of Royal Oak and Ryan P. of Northville; grandson, Alec; and brother, Jeffrey of Fort Meyers, Fla.

ERIC A. ENGBLOM
Eric Engblom, 79, of Bloomfield Township, died April 21, 2002 at home. He was born Dec. 10, 1922, in Detroit.
He graduated from Royal Oak High School and Wayne State University. He was in the US Army Infantry WW II Europe, wounded at the Battle of the Bulge and awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Engblom was a retired staff engineer from GM Tech Center and a consulting engineer.
He was a registered professional engineer-State of Michigan. He was on the board of directors of Christian Family Services for 25 years and president for 10 years; a member of Highland Park Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was also a member of Military Order of the Purple Heart and Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Engblom is survived by wife, Georgina; children, Suzanne Elizabeth (Gary) Johnson of Novi Township, Eric Albert (Cheryl) of Bloomfield Township and Edith Ingrid (Kirk) Landstrom of Madison Heights; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and siblings, Douglas (Rita) of Marshall, Mich., and Stella Van Hove of Lapeer.

Edna Hatlen, 84, of Boulder, Colo., died March 16, 2002, in Boulder. She was born Nov. 8, 1917, in Calumet, Mich.
Mrs. Hatlen is survived by daughters, Linda Bontempo and Kristin Garrett; grandchildren, Cristina, Patrick and Ellie; sisters, Elsie and Eva; and brother, Leslie.

JOSEPH WYCKOFF
Joseph Wyckoff, 76, of Stuart, Fla., formerly of Birmingham, died April 19, 2002, in Fla.
Mr. Wyckoff was in the Navy Air Corps in World War II. He was an Eagle Scout and before retirement he was a Scout Executive of the Detroit Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. He received many distinguished awards throughout his career.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; daughter, Deborah (Stephen) Harris; grandchildren, Amanda and Alex; siblings, Maryann (Marvin) Debbink, and Jerome (Barbara); and 10 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in late June in the Detroit area.

Jean Seip, 88, of Berkley, died April 19, 2002 at home. She was born Jan. 16, 1914 in Detroit.

FREEMAN M. WILNER, M.D.
Freeman Wilner, 75, of Beverly Hills, died April 24, 2002 at home. He was born June 14, 1926, in Detroit.
Dr. Wilner graduated with honors from Cass Technical High School in Detroit. He served in the Army Air Force, then went on to Wayne State University and Wayne State University School of Medicine.
He did his internship at Detroit Receiving Hospital; became Chief Resident there and specialized in Hematology. Dr. Wilner held professional appointments in several area hospitals during his career. At his death, he was Medical Director, at Rose Cancer Center, William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was a member of Wayne County, Oakland County and Michigan State Medical Societies; the A.M.A.; Alpha Omega Alpha; the American Society of Clinical Oncology and Hematology; International Society of Hematology; World Federation of Hemophilia; Detroit Academy of Medicine (past president, also) and the Anthony Wayne Society. Dr. Wilner was an instructor at several area hospitals and had his observations and articles published in Medical Journals.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Louise; children, Jeffrey (Terry) of Bloomfield Hills, Robert (Malou) of Chicago, Paul (Grace) of Okemos, and Laura (Andrew) Craig of Beverly Hills; grandchildren, Julie, Jennifer, Lindsey, Brooke, Jake and Christopher; siblings, Robert, Linda Seidman and Joyce Stone.

RICHARD L. CARLSON
Richard Carlson, 56, of Birmingham, died at home, May 11, 2002. He was born February 26, 1946 in Jamestown, N.Y.
He served in the U.S. Navy and achieved the rank of lieutenant. He was a senior partner in the law firm of Harness Dickey and Pierce in Troy, specializing in intellectual property matters. His interests included neighborhood, school and sports activities, woodworking, boating, scuba diving and sport car activities. Mr. Carlson enjoyed working several SCCA races in flagging and communications.
Mr. Carlson is survived by wife, Christine, sons, Keith and Kevin; siblings, Pat (Dan) Harrington and Ron (Ann); and two nieces and four nephews.

Rev. Frank Cowick, 76, died May 10, 2002 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Farmington Hills. He was born November 15, 1925 in Monmouth, Ill.
Rev. Cowick was a graduate of Western High School in Detroit, Detroit Institute of Technology, Wayne State University, Detroit College of Law and Garrett- Evangelical Theological Seminary, which is part of Northwestern University, in Evanston, Ill. He also received an honorary doctorate from Northwestern University.
He served the United Methodist Church for 45 years in Birmingham/Bloomfield area and was associated with Franklin Community Church in Franklin for many years. After retiring, Rev. Cowick served at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw in Pastoral Care.
He is survived by children, Anne C. Hampson of Oakland County , Laurel Larkins of Louisville, Ky., and Blaine of Castro Valley, Calif.; and grandchildren, Betsy, Kendall, Melissa, Russell and James.

ALBERT "JERRY" CARLSON
Albert Carlson, 89, of Bloomfield Hills, died May 14, 2002 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac. He was born May 17, 1912 in Big Rock, Ill.
Mr. Carlson was a graduate of University of Illinois. He was a Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army serving in the European Theater of operations during WW II, including North Africa. He was an engineer with Ingersoll Milling Company at Rockford, Ill.
He was an avid golfer and sailor.
Mr. Carlson is survived by wife, Charlotte F.; daughter, Barbara (David) Boldt of Columbus, Ohio; son Tom (Barbara) of Ann Arbor; step-daughter, Linda (Alan) Harris of Hadley, Mass.; two sisters and two brothers.

MARY L. SHEPHERD
Mary Shepherd, 86, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Birmingham, died April 30, 2002 at HealthSouth Treasure Coast Rehabilitation Hospital in Vero Beach. She was born July 10, 1915, in Detroit.
She was a graduate of University of Michigan. Mrs. Shepherd was a homemaker and a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, Vero Beach Yacht Club and Trinity Episcopal Church in Vero Beach. While in Birmingham, she was a member of Christ Church Cranbrook.
Mrs. Shepherd is survived by children, John R. of Vero Beach, Fla., and Susan A. Patterson of Spring, Texas; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Betty Waterman of Orange, Fla.

WAYNE A. BROOKS
Wayne Brooks, 81, of Beverly Hills, died May 14, 2002 at home. He was born Dec. 1, 1920, in Detroit.
Mr. Brooks graduated from Western High School and Lawrence Technological University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Special Services (Bugler).
He retired as Head Staff Engineer, Chassis Design for General Motors Car Division. He established the Wayne Brooks Orchestra, a 10-piece band that played locally. He played trombone, piano and the organ. Mr. Brooks was an active member at the Congregational Church of Birmingham; a member of BBASC, and GM Engineering Executive Club. He was a fine craftsman and woodworker and an avid bridge player.
Mr. Brooks is survived by wife, Betty; stepchildren, J.N. (Joyce) Musto of Hawaii, Rick (Pat) Musto of Georgia, Ron (Karen) Musto of California; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

CHARLES E. LE ROY
Charles LeRoy, 79, of Beverly Hills, formerly of Pleasant Ridge, died May 8, 2002, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac. He was born Dec. 255, 1922, in Madison, Wis.
Mr. LeRoy was a graduate of Wayne State University-School of Pharmacy. He co-founded, with his wife, the Poly Clinic Pharmacy in Detroit. After his retirement, he was a pharmacist at Henry Ford Hospital. He was a former Life Member of Grosse Isle Yacht Club and former member of Oak Club in Wyandotte. Mr. LeRoy enjoyed history, politics, the stock market, boating, hockey, high school athletics and spectator sports.
He is survived by wife, Cassie; children, Dolores M., and Annette M. (Charles) Zammit; grandchildren, Christopher, Mark and John-Paul.

MARY D. OBST
Mary Obst, 55, of Royal Oak, died April 4, 2002.
She was a graduate of Barnard College and Wayne State University. She worked as a librarian for the Detroit Public Library system.
Most widely known as Mary Holmes, the name she used as the co-author with Kevin A. Barry of the "Our Life and Times" column in the News & Letters newspaper. She also co-authored two other works, Notes on Women's Liberation and Working Women For Freedom. She worked extensively on Raya Dunayevskaya's, Marxist-Humanist philosopher who founded News & Letters, manuscript collection donated to the Walter Reuther Library and was cataloguing her personal library.
Ms. Obst was fully committed to women's liberation; loved animals, the environment and gardening.
There will be a Memorial Meeting to celebrate her life, June 2, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Conley Branch of the Detroit Public Library, 4600 Martin in southwest Detroit.
