George Cooch
George Cooch, 76, of Placerville, Calif., died July 19, 2002, at home. He was born in Ann Arbor.
Mr. Cooch served in the Navy in World War II and graduated from the University of Michigan. He spent five summers in France, perfecting the use of the language. He received a Fulbright Scholarship and several National Education Grants for this work, awarded because of his facility in languages. He taught at Seaholm High School in Birmingham for 32 years, the last 25 spent as department head. He was a docent at the Marshall Gold
Discovery Park, where he assembled brief descriptions of the park in six languages, benefiting foreign visitors. Mr. Cooch was a member/coordinator of the El Dorado County Master Gardeners, teaching about perennials and bulbs and many plants.
He is survived by wife, Lucille; sister, Dorothy of Placerville, Calif.; brother, William of Ypsilanti; nieces and nephews.

Margaret Eloise Greenway
Margaret Greenway, 71, of Warren, formerly of Royal Oak, died July 21, 2002, at Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was born January 25, 1931 in Clawson.
Ms. Greenway was retired from the Birmingham School District; a member of the Wapiti's, Royal Oak. She was an avid gardener and traveler.
She is survived by children, Shirley D. (Roger) Weber of Troy, Glenn, Jr. (Rose) of Berkley and Wendy (Mark) Edwards of Warren; grandchildren, Glenn, III, Kyle, Kim, Ryan, Cora and Jessica; sister, Shirley (Charles) Bennington of Ferndale; former husband, Glenn "Nick", Sr. of Linden, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

Kenneth E. Kleiman
Kenneth Kleiman, 62, of Bloomfield Hills, formerly of Troy, died July 17, 2002, at Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was born Sept. 11, 1939, in Escanaba, Mich.
Mr. Kleiman graduated from Escanaba High School and University of Michigan. He retired in 1999 as human resource officer for Bank One. He was formerly a member of the adjunct faculty with Walsh College in Troy; member and former board member for Urban League of Detroit; active with the Archdiocese of Detroit as Lay Coordinator and Facilitator for Marriage and Divorce Seminars. He enjoyed woodworking and collecting die cast firetrucks (miniatures).
Mr. Kleiman is survived by wife, Geraldine "Gerri" Iacoboni; children, Leslie (Brad) Cochran of Royal Oak, Christopher of Austin, Texas, Matthew (Karen) of Austin, Texas, Kendra (Michael) Quinlan of Berkley; stepchildren, William (Kristine) Hayes of Atlanta, and Mark (Dawn) Hayes of Troy; grandchildren, Tyler, Morgan, Cameron, Kane, Allie, Hannah and Patrick; mother, Sophie of Escanaba; siblings, Charmaine (Earl) Jensen of Green Bay, Wisc., John (Barbara) of Glastonbury, Conn., Brent (Brenda) of Aliso Viejo, Calif., Cindy of Waterford, and Randy (Lori) of Escanaba.

Helen S. McAllister
Helen Startt McAllister, 80, of Leonardtown, Md., formerly of Birmingham, died Monday, July 15, at St. Mary's Hospital, Leonardtown. She was a devout Catholic and beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Born Feb. 23, 1922, in Easton, Md., she was the daughter of the late Edward Kenly Startt and Nora Stewart Startt.
She is survived by her husband John James "Jack" McAllister originally of Dallas, Texas, whom she married in Easton on Aug. 6, 1946, "the hottest day of the century" (according to Jack), and her six children and their spouses: John and Julie McAllister of Leonardtown, Md.; Margie and David Stekoll of Austin, Texas; Mary and Tom Connin of Denver, Colo,; Nora Davis of Boise, Idaho; Martha and Justin Doherty of Madison, Wis.; and Theresa and Scott Lage of Algona, Iowa.
She is also survived by her sisters, Ruth Startt and Anastasia Startt Cooper of Easton.
Helen is also survived by nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter, Laura McAllister.
She was preceded in death by her brothers and sister Edward Startt, Glenn Startt, Robert Startt, Geraldine "Deanie" Doetzer, Elmer "Chuckle" Startt, Thomas Paul "T.P." Startt, William Startt, and Martin Startt. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Margaret Startt and Nina Startt of Easton and many nieces and nephew.
She was a member of many organizations including Birthright, the Marian High School Mother's Club and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Altar Society in Birmingham, MI, bridge clubs, and discussion clubs. She also enjoyed golfing with her husband Jack, her sister Ann, and she was a founding member of the "nine hole" golf group in Ocean Pines, Md. Despite a busy life, she never missed a day without reading a book and taking an afternoon nap.

Robert Louis Spencer
Robert Spencer, 87, of Holland, Mich., formerly of Birmingham, died July 27, 2002, at a Holland area care center. He was born April 28, 1915.
Mr. Spencer graduated from Albion College, University of Michigan College of Engineering and University of Michigan Law School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Second Lieutenant, U.S. Navy Carrier Aircraft Service Unit in North Island, San Diego, Ulithi, Guam, and Radiation Laboratory MII.
Mr. Spencer worked as a patent attorney for Bendix Aviation, The Aviation Corp., Crosley Corp. and General Motors. He was a partner and secretary of Northern Michigan Inns (Holiday Inn Traverse City), part-owner and president of Big John Inc., and director of Leelanau Telephone Co. He enjoyed family, fishing, boating at his Platte Lake cottage and wintering in Englewood, Fla.
Mr. Spencer is survived by children, Sharon Horton and David Elliott of Grand Rapids, Robert (Elizabeth) of Colorado, William (Priscilla) of Elk Rapids and John (Janet) of Traverse City; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; siblings, John (Charmaine) of Traverse City, Louis of Grand Rapids, Geneva (Maurice) Marcus of California, Jean (Luke) Blevins of Virginia, George Heneveld of Alabama, Barbara (George) Dalman of Holland and Marie (Lloyd) Heneveld of Grand Rapids.

Marlon M. (Mike) Rosenberger
Mike Rosenberger, 87, of The Tellico Village Community, Loudon, Tenn., formerly of Birmingham, died July 29, 2002, at The Farragut Health Care Center in Tenn.
Mr. Rosenberger was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant. He was a retired vice-president and corporate secretary of Kuhlman Corporation in Troy. He was a member of the Tellico Village Community Church; a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, where he served as ruling elder and head of the ushers; a member of the Rotary Club and a published poet.
Mr. Rosenberger is survived by wife, Betty; children, David M. of Bloomfield Hills, Carolyn Kazen of California; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; stepsons, C.David Trestail and Andrew P. Trestail.

Charles R. Scott
Charles Scott, 68, of Mancelona, died July 5, 2002, at home. He was born Nov. 12, 1933 in Lansing.
Mr. Scott graduated from Gladwin Community High School and Michigan State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving after World War II. He retired in 1992, having worked for the Birmingham School District for 26 years. After retirement, Mr. Scott moved permanently to his summer home in Mancelona.
He is survived by parents, John Robert and Mildred (Bay) Scott.
Cremation arrangements were handled by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. There was no memorial service at this time.
H. Lee Busch
H. Lee Busch, 90, of Essex Meadows, Conn., formerly of Birmingham, died July 30, 2002, at home. He was born in Hillsdale, Mich. on April 6, 1912.
Mr. Busch graduated from Michigan State University. He was an Executive Financial Director in Europe and the United States for General Motors for 40 years. He was a member of the Senior Men's Club in Birmingham.
Mr. Busch is survived by wife, Elsie; son, Charles of Haddam Neck, Conn.; grandchildren, Alexander, Scott and Brent; great-granddaughter, Samantha.

Celia June Shea
Celia Shea, 82, of Bloomfield Hills, died July 28, 2002, at home. She was born May 26, 1920, in Bay City, Mich.
Mrs. Shea graduated from Bradford College. She served in the Red Cross in Europe during World War II, stationed in France.
She was an active member of her community with the Junior League of Birmingham, The Village Club and Village Woman's Club Foundation, the Boy's and Girl's Club of Southeastern Michigan, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames of America. She also spent many years as a court watcher with Court Watchers of Oakland County.
Mrs. Shea is survived by son, Forest Whitmore, Jr. and sister, Mary Isabelle Lee McManus of Palm Beach, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at the Wm. R. Hamilton Bell Chapel, 820 East Maple, in Birmingham on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002 at 11 a.m. Visitation with the family will be at 10 a.m. Interment
at White Chapel Cemetery Mausoleum in Troy, which will be private.
Robert F. Dusseau, Sr.
Robert Dusseau, Sr., 85, died Aug. 1, 2002, in Boca Raton, Fla.
He owned and operated Bob Dusseau Lincoln Mercury Inc. in Farmington for 45 years. Mr. Dusseau actively served on the advertising committee of the Lincoln Mercury Dealers Association.
He is survived by son, Robert, Jr., daughter, Virginia; grandchildren, Kathleen Anne and Lindsay Norris Dusseau. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35, Jean (McCombs).
A memorial gathering and lunch for family and friends will be held Saturday, Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Birmingham Athletic Club, Maple Road, Birmingham.
Phyllis J. Gardner
Phyllis Gardner, 91, of Birmingham, died Aug. 3, 2002, at Canterbury on the Lake, in Waterford. She was born Dec. 12, 1910, in Grand Rapids.
Ms. Gardner was a graduate of Hillsdale College, The Chicago School of Music and the University of Michigan. She was a vocal music instructor in the elementary schools in Birmingham, from which she retired after 31 years in 1972. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church of Birmingham; active with the music department at The First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham; sang in the choir at Christ Church Cranbrook and was a member of Village Women's Club.
Ms. Gardner is survived by dear friend, Annabelle Sumera.

John "Jack" Kausch
John Kausch, 73, of Birmingham, died July 29, 2002, at home. He was born April 15, 1929 in New York, New York.
Mr. Kausch was a National Guard veteran. He graduated from Cranbrook and the University of Michigan. He was the owner of Jack Kausch Photography, where he specialized in family portraits, and his work included motion pictures and slide films.
He was a member of Christ Church Cranbrook, Birmingham Historical Society, Les Cheneaux Historical Association and Chi Psi Fraternity. He also enjoyed woodworking and handyman work.
Mr. Kausch is survived by wife, Betsy; children, Charles (Merideth Girard) of Copley, Ohio, Sarah Lloyd of Ann Arbor and David (Towler) of Ann Arbor; grandchildren, Jackie, Emily, Eve Marie and Ian; siblings Maggie (Ed) Bennett of Clemson, S.C., M.J. Phyllis Woodruff
Phyllis Woodruff, 99, of Southfield, formerly of Birmingham, died July 31, 2002 at St. Anne's Mead in Southfield. She was born in Boston, Mass.
Mrs. Woodruff graduated from Boston University.
As a young woman, she was responsible for purchasing food and supplies for Cottage Hospital, established in Boston, Mass., by her mother and Dr. Elliott P. Joslyn.
She was active in The Village Players and St. Dunstan's Theatre Guild; a member of the Altar Guild at Christ Church Cranbrook, the Women's Committee for Cranbrook Art Museum, the Needlework Guild and the Village Club. She also served on a volunteer committee at Martha Baldwin Library.
Mrs. Woodruff is survived by children, Prudence Saunders (George) Miller, William B. (Sally) Saunders; stepchildren, Robert N. Woodruff, Jr. and Anne Woodruff Messerly; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Helen Papp, 93, of Beverly Hills, died Aug. 1, 2002, at Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was born May 27, 1909, in Hungary.
Mrs. Papp is survived by son, Joseph (Dorothy) of Beverly Hills, and daughter-in-law, Shirley; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Paul and Joseph Jozsa, Elizabeth Vigh, Mary Anton and Vera Martin.

Richard James Brown
Richard Brown, 79, of Beverly Hills, died Aug. 4, 2002, at Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was born June 3, 1923, in Menomonie, Wisconsin.
Mr. Brown attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where his father was a professor. He became a B-17 Flying Fortress captain pilot and flew 43 missions during World War II. He received the distinguished flying cross. He taught at Ottumeva Iowa High School for four years, then joined the Chrysler Corp. where he worked as Personnel Manager of the Export-Import Division, until his retirement in 1980.
Mr. Brown is survived by wife, Elsie; children, Lane Brown of Bloomfield Hills, Leeann Sprunk of Traverse City, Lori Brown-Platts of Northville and Lance of Redlands, Calif.; ten grandchildren.

Peter D. Guilford
Peter Guilford, 46, of Rockford, Mich., died July 31, 2002, at home. He was born March 24, 1956, in Royal Oak.
Mr. Guilford was a graduate of Birmingham Seaholm High School, Thomas Jefferson College and Kendall School of Design. He enjoyed fly fishing, bird watching, golfing, his family and tinkering around the house.

Marie M. Buttorf
Marie Buttorf, 82, of Troy, formerly of Birmingham, died Aug. 7, 2002, at Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was born April 18, 1920 in Detroit.
Mrs. Buttorf was a devoted homemaker and grandmother who enjoyed gardening and interior design.

Friedrich Fiesselmann (Fritz)
Friedrich Fiesselmann, 78, of Birmingham, died Aug. 4, 2002, at Botsford Commons Assisted Living Center of Farmington Hills. He was born June 26, 1924, in Detroit.
He was a graduate of Redford High School and Kettering University (General Motors Institute). He was a World War II veteran with the 1st Army Group. He fought with the 1st Division from Cherbourg on the coast of France, through Paris and into Belgium. After nine months of combat, Mr. Fiesselmann was awarded two Purple Hearts for wounds received under fire, two Battle Citations for bravery under fire and one Bronze Star where he took a hit from an exploded artillery round while saving a friend during the battle of Huertgen Forest.
He owned Production Machinery Sales Company, Inc. He was a registered Professional Engineer; former President of Alumni Association, General Motors Institute, St. Dunstan's Theatre Guild, moderator at Pilgrim Congregational Church and in 1955 he was a candidate for City Cimmission in Birmingham.
Mr. Fiesselmann is survived by wife, Alec (Alice); children, Lorie Dietz, Lisa Gleeson and Lydia Moul; grandchildren, Kristin, Karin, Jonathan, David and Brendan; sisters, Helena Zabriskie of Birmingham and Jessie Dalman of Holland, Mich.

Finlay MacQueen
Private services were held for Finlay MacQueen, who died of heart failure on Aug. 3.
Mr. MacQueen was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and came to America in 1922 at age 9.
He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and Army Air Force Statistical School at Harvard Business School.
He was a Lt. Col. in World War II. He loved the competition and camaraderie of golf and tennis and belonged to six clubs in Bloomfield Hills and LaJolla, Calif. He played golf until his final months.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; and son, Finlay III. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara,

Rosalia "Lia" Hilaire
Lia Hilaire, 76, of Bloomfield Hills, formerly of Bethlehem, Pa., England and Germany, died Aug. 23, 2002, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac. She was born Oct. 6, 1925 in Detroit.
Mrs. Hilaire graduated from Marygrove College and Wayne State University. She was a teacher for Bloomfield Hills Public Schools and Roseville Schools, teaching children with learning disablilities. She was also a principal for two years. For seven years, Mrs. Hilaire worked for the Department of Defense Schools. She was a volunteer at St. Hugo of the Hills; enoyed bowling, crocheting and travel. She traveled extensively in Europe, including France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Scandinavia, Britain, Greece and Egypt.
Mrs. Hilaire is survived by daughter, Claudia (Michael) Gajewski of Troy and granddaughter Emily Regina.

Marian Grier Hess
Marian Hess, 97, of Birmingham, died August 21, 2002 at home. She was born June 16, 1905, in Standish, Mich.
She graduated from Michigan State Normal Teacher's College.
Mrs. Hess taught in the public school system in Detroit for 50 years. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church of Birmingham and the Village Club.

Janice B. McManus
Janice McManus, 75, of Beverly Hills, died Aug. 22, 2002, at Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was born Dec. 14, 1926, in Highland Park.
Mrs. McManus was a homemaker; an active volunteer at Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak, which her uncle, Dr. Ernest Bauer co-founded; and a member of P.E.O. Society. She enjoyed golfing in northern Michigan at Lost Lake Woods Club, arts and crafts and needlecrafts.
She is survived by husband, Alan C.; children, Alison M. (John) Walters, Michele M. Olind, Craig A (Terri) and Mark A. (Julie); grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kristen, Courtney and Heath.

Virginia "Ginny" Osgood
Ginny Osgood, 75, of Bloomfield Hills, died Aug. 25, 2002, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac. She was born Jan. 14, 1927, in Detroit.
Mrs. Osgood was a graduate of Mayville High School. She was a member of Pine Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills and Bayview Country Club in Petoskey. She enjoyed golf, tennis and snow skiing and was very involved in the music program at First United Methodist Church of Birmingham as a bellringer and in singing.
She is survived by husband, Frank W.; children, Brian (Kimberly) of Connecticut, Lindsey (Jane) of Bloomfield Hills and Andrew (Kelly) of Birmingham; and ten grandchildren.
