Jewel Herman Sanders
Services for Jewel Herman Sanders, 67, of Trinidad were held 2 p.m.
Saturday, May 31, at Tomlinson Funeral Chapel of Seven Points with
Frederick Burns officiating. Interment
followed at Crandall Cemetery
under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home.
Mr. Sanders died May 28, 2003, at his residence. He was born April 21,
1936, in Three Rivers, Texas. He was a retired carpenter and a member
of the Pentecostal Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He was preceded in death by parents, Jewel and Ora Mae Sanders; and
brother, Sherman Sanders.
Survivors include wife, Sherlie Sanders; children, Mike Sanders of
Rockport, Texas, Ray Fivecoat of Corsicana, Wayne Fivecoat of Kemp,
Terry Fivecoat of Kemp, Mark Fivecoat of Kemp, Debbie Whiteside of
Waco, Carolyn Abu-Salim of Garland; brothers, Bill Sanders of Corpus
Christi, Lloyd Sanders of Galveston, Ward Sanders of Lytle, Texas, and
Glen Sanders of Rock Port.
Pallbearers were Ray Fivecoat, Mark Fivecoat, Michael Allen, Stephen
Trinkler, Terry Fivecoat, and Wayne Fivecoat.
Visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the funeral home.
Clara Mae Shewmaker
Services of remembrance were held for Clara Mae Shewmaker, 88, of
Springtown, Texas, at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Anderson
Clayton Bros. Funeral Home in Kemp, with the Rev. Dub Henry
officiating. Interment
followed at Shiloh Cemetery in Kaufman County.
Mrs. Shewmaker was born Clara Mae Dean, Jan. 8, 1915, in Ellis County
to Claude and Ruth (Walker) Dean and died May 28, 2003, in
Weatherford. She was of the Baptist faith. On June 30, 1934, she
marred James Luther Shewmaker. He preceded her in death July 11, 1994,
and a son-in-law, Larry Gord, preceded her Aug. 8, 1999. Her parents
and four brothers also preceded her.
Dr. Thomas Shepherd Burkhalter Sr.
Dr. Thomas Shepherd Burkhalter Sr., born Sept. 27, 1919, in Sayre,
Okla., and passed away at his home in Richardson Friday, May 30, 2003.
His parents were Henry F. Burkhalter who was born in Rome, Ga. in
February 1886 and mother Myrtle Kirby Burkhalter born in Waketon,
Texas, in 1883. Dr. Burkhalter graduated from Sayre High School,
Sayre, Okla.; Oklahoma University -- Bachelor and Master of Science
degrees; Louisiana State University -- Ph.d, analytical chemistry; he
was Professor of Chemistry -- North Texas State University, 1950-1952;
Head of Freshman Chemistry -- Texas A&M University 1952-1958; Texas
Instruments, 1957-1985; Fellow in Texas Academy of Science; Past
President of the Dallas Section -- American Chemical Society; Senior
Member AICHE; Consultant for National Bureau of Standards; Consultant
to National Materials Advisory Board; Member of Presidents Advisory
Committee on Electronic Parts; Texas Instruments Director of Central
Research, 28 years; Dr. Burkhalter served in the Navy/Air Force,
1944-1946; he attended Methodist and Episcopal churches all his life.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred W. Burkhalter (Married Sept. 27,
1941); children, Dianne Tetreault, Kay Armstrong, Jana Wurfl and
Thomas S. Burkhalter II; sons-in-law, Don Tetreault, Wil Armstrong and
Mark Wurfl; two sisters; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Sparkman
Funeral Home Chapel in Richardson with the Rev. John Drake
officiating. Interment
followed at 2 p.m. at Chinn Chapel Cemetery in
Copper Canyon, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shrine Children's Hospital, 3100
Sanford Ave, Shreveport, LA. 71103; Attn: Donation Dept. in memory of
Thomas Shepherd Burkhalter Sr. with notation Burkhalter Family. The
family received friends at the funeral home Monday, June 2, from 6
p.m. to 8 p.m.
Danny Ray Whiddon
Danny Ray Whiddon, 40, of Mabank went to be with the Lord on May 31,
2003, in Mabank after a brief illness with cancer. Service was 10 a.m.
Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James
Jones officiating. Interment
followed at Payne Springs Cemetery. Mr.
Whiddon was born July 9, 1962, in Dallas. He attended Duncanville
schools for 12 years and graduated from Duncanville High School. He
was employed as electrician for 20 years and an avid fisherman. A
humble and quiet man, Mr. Whiddon was a great father and will be
missed by all that knew and loved him. Survivors include his son, Levi
Ray Whiddon of Kaufman; parents, Letha Mae and Herbert Whiddon of
Mabank; sisters, Carolyn Rich and husband, Larry of Duncanville,
Margie Tucker of Duncanville, Linda Whiddon of Dallas, Sherry
Stapleton and husband, Rick of Duncanville; brothers, Rodney Whiddon
and wife, Gayle of Duncanville and James Whiddon and wife, Valeria of
Mabank; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Irene Payne
Services for Irene Payne, 92, of Gun Barrel City were held 1 p.m.
Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Don
Teague officiating. Interment
followed at Bullard Cemetery under the
direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.
Mrs. Payne died Saturday, May 31, 2003, in Arlington. She was born May
4, 1911, in Weatherford, Texas. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include son, Joel D. Payne and wife, Iris of Arlington;
seven grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 21
great-great-grandchildren.
Steven A. Zubkus
Services for Steven A. Zubkus of Gun Barrel City were held 10 a.m.
Monday, June 2, at the First Prestbyterian Church of Mabank with
Pastor Ron Holloman officiating. Visitation was Sunday, June 1, 6 p.m.
to 8 p.m. at Tomlinson Funeral Home of Seven Points. Burial was at
Largent Cemetery in Lufkin under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral
Home.
O.R. 'Ray' Hennington
O.R. "Ray" Hennington passed away on Monday, June 2, 2003, at the age
of 82. Mr. Hennington was born in McCaulley, Texas on May 28, 1921. He
graduated from McMurry College in Abilene where he met his wife,
Betty, and then served his country in World War II as a radio
operator.
He was an avid Ham Radio operator all of his life and made friends
around the world with his call of W5IWE. Mr. Hennington was the
Controller for the Mail Order House of Montgomery Ward in Fort Worth
for many years and retired in 1986. Upon retirement, the Henningtons
moved to Cedar Creek Lake in Trinidad and recently moved to San
Antonio last year. Mr. Hennington was an active member of the United
Methodist Church and several Ham Radio Clubs.
He is survived by his wife, Betty M. Hennington and his three
daughters, Iris Dodge of Peachtree City, Ga., Mary Hennington of
Dallas, and Doris Pennington of San Antonio; two sons-in-law, Allen
Dodge and Thomas Pennington; and six grandchildren, Kimberly
Pennington Jones, Melissa Kay Pennington, Jamie Beth Pennington, Brett
Steere Dodge, Lynn Goddard Dodge, and Mary Amanda Pennington.
The family received friends on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Porter Loring
Mortuary North.
Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Porter Loring North
Chapel with Dr. J. Weldon Butler of Lubbock, Texas officiating.
Interment
followed in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial

Mrs. Reynolds died June 16, 2003, in Athens. She was born Aug. 27,
1927, in Independence, Mo. She was a member of the Eustace Assembly of
God.
Survivors include children, Janice Brock of Mabank, Wanda Floyd of
Channel View, Brenda Loebig of Frankston, Lacey Reynolds of Houston,
Joyce Van Patten of League City; 18 grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren.
Lloyd E. Hoggatt
Graveside services for Lloyd E. Hoggatt, 73, of Athens were held 10
a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Trinidad Cemetery with Bill Hamilton
officiating and under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home of
Malakoff.
Mr. Hoggatt died June 15, 2003, in Athens. He was born Dec. 20, 1929,
in Yates Center, Kansas, to Emmett Paul and Glaudine DeAughter
Hoggatt. He has lived in this area since 1972, and worked in
contruction. Mr. Hoggatt was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church,
and a member of the VFW. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include sisters, Maxine Tart of Trinidad, Joy Woolery of
Thayer, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at the
funeral home.
Walter Steven 'Steve' Ford
Walter Steven "Steve" Ford passed away suddenly in his home in Gun
Barrel City on June 10, 2003. He was born March 26, 1940, at March
Field, Calif. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Nadine Ford
and father, Walter Reid Ford, a decorated World War II hero. Mr. Ford
retired from the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, Calif., after
32 years of service as a Senior Comptroller conducting the final
inspections for new submarines. He moved from the Napa Valley of
California to Texas in September 1998 and resided in Gun Barrel City.
Mr. Ford is survived by his sister, Judith Ann and her husband, Donald
R. Smith of Payne Springs. Other relatives include his nephew, John L.
Mathis and his wife, Donna, nephew, Allen R. Mathis, two
great-nephews, Brandon R. Black and Dylan L. Mathis, and a
great-niece, Halie M. Mathis.
Wayne R. Lacey
Wayne R. Lacey was born May 15, 1932, in Wetumpka, Ala., and passed
away June 11, 2003. He was employed with Yellow Freight 23 years and
Jones Freight 19 years. Survived by wife, Audrey Lacey of 45 years;
children, Brenda Howard and husband, Roger, Linda Trammell and Pery
Lacey and wife, Belinda; grandchildren, Steven Robinson, Ellis Howard,
Aaron Howard, Brittany Trammell, Cheryl Lacey, Jenny Lacey;
great-grandchildren, Dalton Lacey, Rachael Robinson, Caden Howard,
Lani Howard and Lexi Howard; sister, Helen Shearin and Mable McCrary,
and a host of other loving family and friends. Preceded in death by
son, Wayne Rex Lacey Jr. in 1994. Graveside services were at 3 p.m.
Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation was
from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Roselawn Chapel.
