Belva E. Hastings
Belva E. Hastings Campbell, 91, of Batesville died Dec. 8, 2002, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born Feb. 12, 1911, at Tahlequah, Okla., she was the daughter of Almond Alvis and Ethel Almalee Lassiter Hastings. She was a homemaker and a member of Pool’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church at Sandtown.
Survivors include four sons – John A. Campbell, Jerry E. Campbell, Bob J. Campbell, all of Batesville, and Gary L. Campbell of Mount Pleasant; five daughters – Freda M. Thomas of Las Vegas, Cleva Leslie, Wanda Roach, Nina Carter and Shirley Ernestine Hoover, all of Batesville; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earnest C. Campbell; three brothers – Laman Hastings, Johnny Hastings and Billy Hastings; two sisters – Geraldine Pool and Lenelle Kinds; and three grandchildren.
The funeral was Dec. 9 at Qualls Funeral Home Chapel in Cave City with Jimmy Richardson officiating. Burial followed in Lee’s Chapel Cemetery at Sandtown.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lee’s Chapel Cemetery or to the Pool’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.

Bryce Harrison
Bryce Harrison, 79, of Brockwell, died July 14, 2002, at North Arkansas Life Care Center in Horseshoe Bend.
Born June 3, 1923, in Snider, Okla., he was the son of Charlie LeRoy Harrison and Ardena Calaham Harrison. He married Janeen Redsiek July 8, 1972, in Riverside, Calif. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps., having served during World War II. He worked many years as a dairy farmer and as a truck driver. He was active in all things to do with agriculture. He also drove a bus for handicaped adults and loved helping them with their gardens. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Cherokee Village.
Survivors include his wife, Janeen of Brockwell; two sons – Jared Harrison of Brockwell and Lance Harrison of Lawton, Okla.; three daughters – Sherry Dorsey of Beaumont, Texas, Christy Hiliker of Gainesville, Va., and Shannon Harrison of Melbourne; two brothers – LeRoy Harrison of Anadarko, Okla., and Agnes Truex of Romoland, Calif., and Martha Dean Jackson of Costa Mesa, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and a sister.
The funeral was July 20 at 11 a.m. at Tri-County’s Cherokee Chapel Funeral Services in Highland, with President Christopher Bowman of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. Burial followed in Campground Cemetery between Ash Flat and Evening Shade.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Horseshoe Bend Memorial Chapel.
Bernard Marshall
Bernard William Marshall, 72, of Hardy died May 16, 2002, at White River Medical Center in Batesville Born Jan. 25, 1930, in Albion, Mich., he was the son of Bernard H. and Georgia Childers Marshall. He married Lillie Mae Couch Jan. 24, 1978, in Swifton. He was a Merchant Marine 2nd mate and worked for Midwest Towing/Cargil Steel for 40 years. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters – Sharon Cornwell of Perkin, Ill., Renia Killgore of Nashville, Tenn., Janell Eason of Ringgold, Ga., and Kim Light of Dallas, Ga.; a son, Dale Rogers of Houston; two brothers – Bert Marshall of Albion, and James Marshall of Jackson, Mich.; a sister, Georgia Scimes of Marshall, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The funeral was May 21 at Higginbotham Funeral Service Chapel in Walnut Ridge with Jeremy James and Josh Smith officiating. Burial followed at Swifton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Charlie Light, Jimmy Hayden, Jeremy James, O.D. Templeton, Joshua Smith and Eddie Ross.
Arrangements were under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Services Inc. of Walnut Ridge.
Bonnie Weaver
Patricia “Bonnie” Weaver, 85, of Batesville, died March 23, 2002, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born June 28, 1916, at Sidney, she was the daughter of James Abner and Jinnie Adaline Smith Gifford. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include a sister, Verlin Marie Davidson of Caseyville, Ill., and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers – Bud Gifford, Henry Gifford and J.C. Gifford; four sisters – Oretha Browning, L.V. Everett, Nola May Lindsey and an infant sister.
A graveside service was March 26 at Maxville Cemetery north of Cave City with the Rev. M.D. Parmley officiating.
Pallbearers were Richard Barber, Gary Lindsey, Calvin Flinn, William Flinn, Alfred Reding and Gene Lindsey.
Arrangements were under the direction of Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City.
Elizabeth Beckert
Elizabeth “Betty” Jewel Beckert, 92, of Hardy died April 7, 2002, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Heath System in Cherokee Village.
Born Nov. 24, 1909, in Wildinsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Warwick Riner Jewel and Gertrude Hurst Jewele. She grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., and was married there May 15, 1937, to John “Jack” Edward Beckert. After two decades of life on Long Island, N.Y., Betty and Jack retired to Hardy and resided in Woodland Hills until his death in 1973.
She was a homemaker, she had been very active in their children’s school activities and was president of the PTAs of both grade school and high school. She continued to be involved with many community activities. She was active in the Timely Club, serving as district secretary and treasurer and the Hardy Garden Club, where she held the office of secretary. She had been a volunteer at the Senior Citizens Center and was a member of the auxiliary at Ash Flat Nursing Home. She was a very faithful attendant and active in her Woman’s Circle at Spring River Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters – Linda Marean of Okatie, S.C., and Barbara Innis of Westborough, Mass.; a son, Charles R. Beckert of Massapequa, N.Y.; a sister, Margaret Leyonmark of Hamburg, N.Y.; a brother, Louvin Jewel of Kenmore, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, – Deborah Marean of Durham, N.C., Jason Beckert of Seaford, N.Y., and Sara Hudson of Westborough, Mass.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
A memorial service will be May 13 at 10 a.m. at Spring River Presbyterian Church in Hardy. Burial will follow in Spring River Presbyterian Memorial Garden.
Arrangements are under the direction of Spring River Presbyterian Church.
Memorials may be made to the Spring River Presbyterian Church, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Florence Bousselot
Florence Elizabeth Bousselot, 93, of Horseshoe Bend died March 1, 2002, at Fulton County Hospital in Salem.
Survivors include two sons – Eugene Bousselot of Syracuse, N.Y., and Rodger Bousselot of Marietta, Ga.; three daughters – Virginia Hanusa of Greenville, Texas, Bonnie Bousselot of Horseshoe Bend, and Yvonne Coussens of Wilton Junction, Iowa.; a brother, Herbert Zechmeister of Farmington, Minn.; and a sister, Mildred Ehlers of Newport, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son and a daughter.
The funeral was March 11 at Shepherd of The Hills Lutheran Church in Horseshoe Bend. Burial followed in Evening Shadows Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Horseshoe Bend Memorial Chapel.
Gracie Branscum
Gracie Marie Branscum, 86, of Ash Flat, died Feb. 18, 2002, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born July 28, 1915, in Ash Flat, she was the daughter of Henry and Sarah Soward Frazier. She was a homemaker and a member of Ash Flat Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Dean Branscum of Ash Flat; a daughter, Sue Runsick of Ash Flat; a brother, J.C. Frazier of Eugene, Ore.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Homer Branscum; a son, James Branscum; and a brother, William E. Frazier.
The funeral was Feb. 21 at Ash Flat Church of Christ with Jack Richardson officiating. Burial followed at Ash Flat Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Raymond Branscum, Euion York, Jerry Branscum, Joe Branscum, Terry York and Brock York.

Delila Branson
Delila (Lila) Lorene Branson 83, of Hardy died Aug. 14, 2002, at her home. She was born Oct. 2, 1918, in Bay, Ark. She had been employed by Westinghouse Aerospace.
Survivors include one son, Marshall Riley Grove; and one daughter, Mary Frances Whitley.
Arrangements will be announced later but are under the direction of Heath Funeral Home, Oak Hill Chapel of Hardy.
Charles Buckman
Charles Evin Buckman, 88, of Leesburg, Fla., formerly of Cherokee Village died Feb. 28, 2002, at Westminster Care of Clermont, in Clermont, Fla.
Born Nov. 30, 1913, in Clinton, Iowa, he was the son of J.C. “Charlie” and Carrie E. “Lizzie” Judd Buckman. He married Mary Ellen Petersen Aug. 5, 1934, in Rock Island, Ill. She died in October 1996.
He was a 1934 graduate of Clinton High School. He also was a graduate of Davenport Barber College, Davenport, Iowa. He served the United States Navy in the Pacific from 1944-1947 on the USS Howard Gilmore. He was a grocery store and barber shop owner/operator in Clinton. He moved from Clinton to Northbrook, Ill., then retired to Cherokee Village. He then moved to Mountain Home, and finally to Hawthorne at Leesburg.
Survived include a daughter, Sandra Jean (Rev. John) Cornish of Leesburg; three grandchildren – Randall (Crystal) Cornish of St. Charles, Ill; Vicky Rudd of Ozark, Mo; Will (Julie) Cornish of Georgetown, Texas; five great-grandchildren – Lynn Rudd, Nikki Rudd, Justin Rudd, Mandy Cornish and Kelsey Cornish; a great-greatgrandson, Andrew Heidenreich; two brothers – Levi Buckman of Clinton and Harold Buckman of Chicago; two sisters – Agnes Marr Kerwin of Mountain Home and Vera DeSimone Ott of Clinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers – Royce and Earl Buckman; and two sisters – Elizabeth Kirchner and Hazel Thompson.
The funeral was March 6 at Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig-Dennis A. Lemke Funeral Homes and Crematory with the Rev. Herb Shafer officiating. Burial followed in Clinton Lawn Cemetery, with military honors being conducted by Clinton AMVETS Post 28.
Memorial may be made to Endowed Educational Scholarships at Mount St. Clare, Southeastern Community College, and Iowa Wesleyan College. Memorials may also be made to Hospice of Lake/Sumter County or Hawthorne at Leesburg.
Crystal Burkhardt
Crystal Dawn Burkhardt, 16, of Ozark Acres died Aug. 24, 2002, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Mo.
Born April 28, 1986, in Indianapolis, Ind., she was the daughter of Robert and Robin Sowers.
She was a junior at Williford High School. She excelled in her education, making the honor roll and participated in several extra curricular activities and clubs such as FFA, medical arts, Aspire, Spanish Club, Beta Club, and FBLA in which she was secretary. Upon receiving her driver’s license, she made the decision to be an organ donor, which was honored.
Survivors include her father, Robert Burkhardt of Indianapolis; her mother and stepfather, Robin and Bob Sowers of Ozark Acres; two sisters – Tracy Burkhardt and Heather Sowers; a brother, Timothy Berry; a nephew, Dakota Burkhardt; and her grandparents – Marie Burkhardt, Larry and Jeannie Johnson, and Betty Sowers.
A memorial service was Aug. 27 at Williford High School with the Rev. Dennis Tinsman officiating, with tributes from Mr. Teadwell, teacher; Lana Richmond, best friend; Patti Ikemire, aunt; and her mother’s letter read by her father.
Carl Morgan
Carl Dexter Morgan, 78, of Williford died March 17, 2002, at St. Bernard’s Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
Born Feb. 12, 1924, in Williford, he was the son of Clarence Dexter and Mirtie Mae Gann Morgan. He married Norma Frances Clemons Jan. 16, 1943, in Norfork. He was a retired Union employee and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife; a sister, Clara Mae Madison of Williford; a brother, C.J. Morgan of Williford; a grandson, Jason Clay Morgan Mixon; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Charles Dexter Morgan in October 1976.
The funeral was March 20 at Higginbotham Chapel in Hardy with the Rev. Jerry Clements officiating. Burial followed in the Morgan Family Cemetery at Williford.
Pallbearers were Jason Mixon, Poncho Sterling, Jim Bolen, Sam Madison, Clinton Madison, Tracey Morgan, Vernon Lane and Don Haney.

Lillian Cagle
Lillian Virginia Bogan Cagle, 76, of Hardy died Oct. 5, 2002, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village.

Raymond Carlson
Raymond E. Carlson, 74, of Cherokee Village, formerly of West Plains, Mo., died Oct. 18, 2001, at St. Bernard’s Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
Born Feb. 7, 1927, in Clinton, Iowa, he was the son of Frances McCue Carlson and Elmer Carlson. He spent his childhood years in the Chicago area and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He married Harriet Thulen in 1948.
He was employed by the Savanna (Ill.) Army Depot for 23 years, retiring in 1970. He was a Civil Service employee, artist/illustrator at the Army Depot in Savanna.
He married Donna Hartman in 1972. In 1973 he moved to West Plains, Mo., and operated and owned C & D Ceramics, Carlson Painting Co., and D & R Tee’s. He moved to Cherokee Village in 1998.
He enjoyed family, oil painting, woodworking and attended powwows; he was of Sioux ancestry and had many Native American friends since he was a member of the Will Rogers Indiana Club. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of Cherokee Village United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Donna, of Cherokee Village; five sons and daughters-in-law – Roger and Susan Carlson of Shandler, Ariz., Terry and Elizabeth Carlson of Cleveland, Miss., Randy and Mo Hartman of Houston, Texas, Ricky and Beatricz Hartman of San Diego, Calif., and Rodney and Lisa Hartman of Biloxi, Miss.; two daughters and a son-in-law – Cathy Buck of West Plains, and Cristy and Joseph Flies of Naperville, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; two sisters; and a grandson.
The funeral was Oct. 22 at Heath Oak Hill Chapel with the Rev. Jim West officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Heath Funeral Home of Hardy.
William Lynn Caruthers
Williams Lynn Caruthers, 89, of Cherokee Village died April 3, 2002, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village.
Born June 29, 1912, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., he was the son of Judge J. Henry Caruthers and Corinne Cashion Caruthers. He attended Washington University and the University of Missouri where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was a former member of the Cape Girardeau and Cherokee Village Lions clubs. He was an avid golfer, hunter and bridge player. He was a member of Spring River Presbyterian Church.
He married Eileen Slinkard Oct. 29, 1937. He retired from DeKalb Agriculture Association in 1972 and moved to Cherokee Village.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years; a daughter and son-in-law – Sharon and Donald Spellman of Norris, Tenn.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Robert D. Caruthers of Wilton, Conn.
No services are planned.

Florence Chapman
Florence M. Chapman, 103, of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Cherokee Village, died March 21, 2002, in Davenport.
Born April 24, 1898, in Traer, Iowa, she was the daughter of Peter and Ina Stark McMillan. She married the Rev. Donald Paul Chapman June 30, 1926, in Traer. He preceded her in death Dec. 29, 1987.
She was a teacher for many years in Blue Island, Ill., Ft. Madison, Iowa, and Davenport. She retired in 1964 and moved to Cherokee Village. She was a member of Spring River Presbyterian Church in Hardy.
Survivors include two daughters – Barbara Truesdell of Hot Springs Village, and Donna and Bob McCollam of Blue Grass, Iowa; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son; and a son-in-law, Al Truesdell.
The funeral was March 24 at Spring River Presbyterian Church in Hardy with Mrs. Chapman’s grandson, Pastor Dan McCollam, officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery in Cherokee Village.

Leslie Clarke
Leslie E. Clarke, 83, of Horseshoe Bend died March 12, 2002, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born June 25, 1918, in Sycamore, Ill., he was the son of Ernest G. and Emily Joslin Clarke. He worked many years as an auto mechanic for Commonwealth Edison before retirement. He moved to Horseshoe Bend in 1979. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Eagles and the bowling club. He was a member of the Men’s Club and Horseshoe Bend United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son and his wife, William L. and Sandra Clarke of Avalon, Wis.; a daughter, Carol Jean Clegg of Belvedere, Ill.; a brother, George Clarke of Moberly, Mo.; two sisters – Erma Packard of Napierville, and Evelyn Green of DeKalb; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; and a sister, Edith.
A graveside service was March 16 at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Dekalb, with local arrangements under the direction of Horseshoe Bend Memorial Chapel of Horseshoe Bend.

Aileen Cole
Aileen Thompkins Cole, 72, died Aug. 21, 2002, in Osceola.
Born June 3, 1930, in Lepanto, she was the daughter of Edgar and Suda Hatten Thompkins. She married Wayne Cole on Feb. 7, 1964, in Lepanto. She spent her life as a mother and homemaker. She attended Midway Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Elrod of Keiser; one stepdaughter, JoAnn Tayler of Rivervale; four sisters – Violet Carlton of Melbourne, Zala Johnson of Evening Shade, Betty Burns of Russellville, and Patsy Dyer of Conway; two brothers – Oliver Thompkins of Lake Elsinore, Calif., and Wilton Thompkins of Evening Shade; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a son, Donald Ray Johnson of Harrisburg.
The funeral was Aug. 23 at the Roman and Billy Howard Memorial Chapel in Melbourne with Bobby Cannon officiating. Burial followed at Antioch Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dean Hutchins, Doug Arnold, Bill Bohannan, James McReynolds, Ron Eary, Jay Johnson.
