Wilbur Adams
Wilbur D. “Bill” Adams, 52, of Hot Springs died Jan. 11, 2002, at his home.
Born Aug. 29, 1949, at Batesville, he was the son of Bennie and Audley Claxton Adams. He was an auditor and supervisor for the state of Arkansas, a U.S. Air Force veteran of Vietnam, and attended Garner United Methodist Church in Hot Springs.
Survivors include his wife, Sybil Stewart Adams; a step-daughter, Stephanie Belin of Little Rock; three brothers, – Wendell Adams of Springdale, Doug Adams of Batesville and Bennie Adams of Evening Shade; a grandson, Hunter Belin of Little Rock; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Donald Adams.
The funeral was Jan. 14 at Qualls Batesville Funeral Service Chapel. Burial followed in Pleasant Valley Cemetery located at Cushman.
Pallbearers were Blake Adams, Wendell Dean Adams, Ryan Adams, Charles Adams, Kenneth Adams and Michael Belin.
Arrangements were under the direction of Qualls Batesville Funeral Service.

Marvin Adams
Marvin C. Adams, 92, of Cherokee Village died May 22, 2001, at Eaglecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ash Flat.
Born Dec. 18, 1908, in Burbank, Calif., he was the son of Alford and Artie Adams. He married Peggy June 15, 1931, in Savanna, Mo. He was a member of Shiloh Church of Christ in Missouri and attended Ash Flat Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Hugh Adam of Fulton, Texas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
No service is planned at this time.
Memorials may be made to Ash Flat Church of Christ.

Peggy Adams
Peggy G. Adams, 91, of Cherokee Village died June 18, 2001, at Eagle Crest Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Ash Flat.
Born March 3, 1910, in Cameron, Mo., she was the daughter of Leroy and Matilda E. Austin Flanders. She worked many years as a registered nurse before retiring. She attended Ash Flat Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Larry Hugh Adams of Fulton, Texas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
No services are planned at this time.
Memorials may be made to Ash Flat Church of Christ.

Rex Anna Albrecht
Rex Anna Albrecht, 48, of Hardy, died Nov. 12, 2001, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born May 17, 1953, in St. Louis, Mo., she was the daughter of Lucille and Lloyd Hunt of Ash Flat. She was employed as a CNA.
Survivors include a son, Billy White of Alton, Mo.; a daughter, Michelle Nokes of Bonne Terre, Mo.; three brothers – Gene Adams of Cuba, Mo., Tracy Leach of Chicago, and Steven Tharp of Farmington, Mo.; three sisters – Carmen Jackson of Black, Mo., Clara Rictor of Sainte Genevieve, Mo., and Donna Woodfin of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Calvin.
A graveside service was Nov. 17 at Turkey Pen Cemetery in Highland with Tim Turner officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of Heath Funeral Home Oak Hill Chapel of Hardy.

G. W. Allen
G.W. Allen, 80, of Cherokee Village died March 1, 2001, at North Arkansas Life Care Center in Horseshoe Bend.
Born July 18, 1920, in Mount Vernon, Texas, he was the son of John D. Allen and Clemmie Bowen Allen. He retired from the United States Postal Service. He also owned a brokerage business before moving to Arkansas. He and his wife moved to Sharp County in 1983 from Dallas. They owned and operated the Oldies-N-Goodies Shop in Hardy. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II where he received the Purple Heart. While in Cherokee Village, he was active in Cherokee Players.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita; a brother, Charles Allen of Waco, Texas; a sister, Opal Roper of Duncanville, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was March 5 at Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel.

Gerald Anders
Gerald Darwin Anders, 67, of Ravenden died March 31, 2001.
Born Dec. 25, 1933, in Centerville, Iowa, he was the son of Pearl and Harry Anders Sr. After graduating from Centerville High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict.
After his discharge, he enrolled at the University of California at Berkley and later transferred to Rutgers, the State University, at New Brunswick, N.J., where he earned his bachelor's degree. He received his master's degree in psychology from Newark State College (now Keen College) at Union, N.J. He retired as administrative dean from Rockland County Community College at Suffren, N.Y.
After moving to Venice, Fla., he was employed by the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. He retired from there as the corrections officer facilitator of the L.I.F.E. program for inmates, and then moved to Ravenden.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Finch Anders; four sons ­ Kurt Anders, Eric Anders, Matthew Anders and Mark Anders, all of New Jersey; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers ­ Harold Anders and Harry Anders Jr.; and a sister, Virginia Burton.
The body was cremated and the ashes were returned to Centerville. The service was April 7 at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Centerville with the Rev. Sue Palmer officiating.

Bobby Anderson
Bobby Gene Anderson, 70, of Ravenden Springs died April 1, 2001, at his home.
Born Jan. 17, 1931, in Randolph County, he was the son of Troy and Lomi Hartley Anderson. He was a Korean War veteran, having served in the United States Air Force. He was also a pipeline worker for the Esco Green Pipe Company in Florida.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Joan "Jo" Anderson; four daughters ­ Charlotte Murphy of Little Rock, Cathy Adams and Bobby Gail Anderson, both of Pocahontas, and Donna Lester of Williford; two stepdaughters ­ Jenneffer Jo Wells of Ravenden, and Jorja Lee Foster of Benson, Ariz.; a stepson, Tom Foster of Lockport, Ill.; three sisters ­ Dortha Calvert, Fay Marin and Lavern Amos, all of Pocahontas; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
No funeral service is planned.

Jason Anderson
Jason Lynn Anderson, 26, of Ash Flat died March 2, 2001, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village.
Born May 10, 1974, in Salem, he was the son of George and Shelah Hawk Wolverton. He was a graduate of Highland High School.
Survivors include his parents; a brother, Robert Wolverton of Ash Flat; two sisters ­ Jamie Wolverton and Marion Wolverton, both of Ash Flat; three grandparents ­ Marion Keeler, and Eilbert and Delora Wolverton, all of Ash Flat; two uncles and aunts ­ Mike and Christy Hawk of Evening Shade, and Terry and Candy Hawk of Pennsylvania; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jack Hawk.
The funeral was March 5 at Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel in Highland with Hazel Shelley officiating. Burial followed at Campground Cemetery between Ash Flat and Evening Shade.

Stella J. Anderson
Stella J. Anderson, 86, of Horseshoe Bend died Dec. 11, 2000.
Survivors include a sister, Frances Galaviche of Shadyside, Ohio; and a brother, William Zuleski of Hartford, Conn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Anderson, in 1987; three sisters; and a brother.
A memorial service was Dec. 17 at Horseshoe Bend United Methodist Church with Rev. Vaughn Marsden officiating. Burial was in Violet Hill Cemetery.

James Andrews
James Aubrey Andrews, 75, of Hardy died March 25, 2001, at EagleCrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ash Flat.
Born Aug. 25, 1925, in Marianna, he was the son of Steven William and Kathleen Hudson Andrews. He was a retired school teacher and served in the United State Marine Corps during World War II. He was a volunteer football and baseball coach at Manila, a past member of the Marianna Lions Club and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hardy.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Murphy Andrews; two sons ­ William Andrews of Little Rock, and Allan Andrews of Bonnea, S.C.; two sisters ­ Darthy Tyrety of Hot Springs, and Willa Sevelle of Columbus, Miss.; a grandson, Stephen Andrews of Bonnea, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was March 28 at First United Methodist Church in Hardy.

William H. Arnold
William Henry Arnold, 57, of Ash Flat died Nov. 5, 2000, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village.
Born Dec. 1, 1942, in Denver, he was the son of James Martin Arnold and Vera Duncan Arnold. He was retired from the United States Army, having served 22 years. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby N. Arnold; a son, James Ray Arnold; three daughters - Vera Nadine Zortman of Manitowoc, Wis., Angela King of Ash Flat, and Cynthia Porter of Ash Flat; a brother, James I. Arnold of Edgar Springs, Mo.; a sister, Vera Lorene Bauer of Windsor, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carlene Joyce McGuire.
A graveside service was Nov. 9 at the Highland Cemetery in Highland with the Rev. Ferrell Duffel officiating. Arnold was buried with full military honors.
Arrangements were under the direction of Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel of Highland.

Florene Bahls
Florene Webb Bahls, 91, of Hardy died June 22, 2001, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village.
Born May 11, 1910, in Washburn, Texas, she was the daughter of Terry and Sarah Ada Bennett Odom. She retired as an operator for Southwestern Bell before moving to the Cherokee Village area in 1962 from Amarillo, Texas with her husband, William Webb. She was a past worthy matron of the A.E. Shirley Chapter of the Order of the Easter Star in Amarillo. She was also a 50-year-member of the organization. While in Sharp County she owned Flossie's Treasures in Hardy and was a member of the China Painters and the Garden Club. She attended Cherokee Village United Methodist Church for many years with her husband until he died in 1972. She attended Peace Lutheran Church in Cherokee Village for the last several years.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law ­ Anita and Bill Pratt of Hardy and Oklahoma City; a brother, Pete Odom of Amarillo; two grandchildren and their spouses ­ Rebecca Ann and Steve Robertison of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Doug and Jackie Pratt of Moore, Okla.; and two great-grandchildren ­ Krystal Pratt and Corey Pratt of Moore.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, William Webb; and her second husband, Mr. Bahls.
The funeral was June 25 at Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel with the Rev. David Tews officiating. Burial followed at Oaklawn Cemetery in Cherokee Village.
Pallbearers were Harold Luebken, Gordon Wickstrom, Werner Schaffner, Mel Larson, Glen Schoen and Ralph Prevo.

Carrie Barnett
Carrie Emeline Whitten Barnett, 95, of Evening Shade, died Nov. 16, 2001, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village.
Born Sept. 10, 1906, at Cushman, she was the daughter of Jasper and Manerva Whitten. She married Adie M. Barnett Oct. 5, 1924, near Sidney. She was a housewife, a school lunch supervisor at Evening Shade School and a librarian at Evening Shade. She was a member of Evening Shade United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, – Thelma and Ross Jackson of Lubbock, Texas, and Cora Lou and Paul Davis of Evening Shade; 11 grandchildren – George Moss of Liberty, Texas, Gail Vickery of Baytown, Texas, Brenda Arnold of Wichita, Kan., Carolyn Benson and Susan McAlexander both of Lubbock, Sherron Johnson of Levelland, Texas, Perry Jackson of Houston, Ricky Davis of Heber Springs, Pam Buie of Batesville, Harlan Davis of Highland, and Laurie Weaver of Evening Shade; 27 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Eva Lee Paysinger of Batesville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Roxie Moss; two brothers – Bill Whitten and John Henry Whitten; three sisters – Artie Thomas Pilant, Trixie Qualls Hoaney, and Jewell Whitten; and three infant great-grandchildren.
The service was Nov. 18 at Evening Shade United Methodist Church with the Rev. Loye Vern Mason officiating. Burial followed in Evening Shade Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City.

Henrietta Bartruff
Henrietta Marie Bartruff, 81, of Cherokee Village, died May 22, 2001, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village.
Born Sept. 24, 1919, in Benton Harbor, Mich., she was the daughter of John Schindler and Rose Painter Schindler. She married Jack Bartruff Sept. 7, 1940, in South Bend, Ind. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah, Ind., enjoyed playing buncko and pinochle and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and daughters-in-law ­ Ken and Jo Elen Bartruff of Cherokee Village, and Steve and Nancy Bartruff of Kingman, Ariz.; four daughters and two sons-in-law ­ Nancy Jones of Coppell, Texas, Sylvia and Gary Phillis of Moutello, Wisc., Joyce and Al Buchta of Phoenix; and Marilyn Bartruff of Porter, Ind.; a sister and brother-in-law ­ Helen and Harry Spangerberg of Benton Harbor; 28 grandchildren; and 29 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother ­ Frank Schindler; and two sisters ­ Anna Schindler and Katherine Schindler.
The funeral was May 25 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home in Chesterton, Ind. Burial followed in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in Michigan City, Ind.

Herbert Bass
Herbert Gerome Bass, 62, of Fontaine, died Dec. 4, 2001, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born Oct. 16, 1939, in Fontaine, he was the son of Leonard and Myrtle Prack Bass. He was a self-employed carpenter for over 42 years and was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his mother, of Walnut Ridge; three daughters – Melinda Bass of Jonesboro, Jackie Meredith of Bono, and Vickie Bass of Oklahoma; three sons – Bill Bass of Cherokee Village, Joe Bass of Black Rock, and Scott Bass of Jonesboro; a sister, Barbara South of Sedgewick; two brothers – Lovell Bass and Winford Bass, both of Fontaine; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Charlotte Lamb.
The funeral was Dec. 7 at the chapel of Higginbotham Funeral Home of Walnut Ridge. Burial followed in the Old Military Cemetery in Sedgewick.
Arrangements were under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service Inc. of Walnut Ridge.
Pallbearers were Brandon Bass, Cody Bass, Eric Bass, Chris Hess, Bobby Maxie and Rick McComas.

Johnnie Louise Bassham
Johnnie Louise Rose Bassham, 71, of Salem, died Dec. 4, 2001, in Mountain Home.
Born April 20, 1930, in Melbourne, she was the daughter of Joseph Hugh and Martha Emma Helm Rose. She married Archie Irvin Bassham Feb. 25, 1951, at Salem.
She spent her working years as a wife, mother, grandmother, and a sewing machine operator for International Shoe Company. She was a member of Moko Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son, Terry Bassham, and his wife, Vicky, of Moko; a brother, Joe Rose Jr. of Boise, Idaho; four sisters – Ruth Rose Richardson of Sidney, Emma Sue Shallenberger of New Bloomville, Ill., Gussie Rose Williams of Aliep, Texas, and Joy Catherine McNew of Caruthers, Calif.; two grandsons – Michael Bassham and his wife, Mendy, of Moko, and Alan Bassham and his wife, Carla, of Mountain Home; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents,; her husband; and a sister, Martha Inez Hall.
The funeral was Dec. 7 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel in Salem with Duane Warden officiating. Burial followed in Salem Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Barker Funeral Home of Salem.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Harris, Richard Bassham, Mark Bassham, Mike Bassham, David Bassham and Guy Bassham.
Honorary pallbearers were Ray Gene Harris, Jewell Skaggs, Kenneth Turner, Ed Bassham and Thomas Bassham.
Memorials may be made to Stateline Cemetery Association.

Laura Bates
Laura Merlene Actkinson Bates, 93, of Hardy died Feb. 26, 2001, at her home.
Born Feb. 13, 1908, in Marshall, she was the second child of 14 born to William Marion and Ersie Jane O'Neal Actkinson. She married Sherman Carroll Bates Feb. 28, 1932, and the couple moved to Hardy in 1935. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Hardy for 65 years, working as a Sunday School teacher and choir member as well as in many different leadership positions in the WSCS and UMW. She sang alto with the Hardy Harmonettes quartet for 15 years. She was also a member of Ruby Chapter 191 Order of the Eastern Star for 63 years serving in several different capacities including worthy matron. She was a community-minded member of the Timely Garden Club of Hardy, arranging flowers for the church and various community activities. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the family businesses connected with timber, Mobil oil and car dealerships.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James C. and Carol Bates of Hardy; two grandchildren and grandchildren-in-laws ­ Darren and Carrie Bates of Hardy, and Karyn and Michael Fitch of Oklahoma; a great-grandson, Brady Bates of Hardy; a niece, Lula Jewel Brister Whitsell of Helena, who lived with Mr. and Mrs. Bates from the age of 10 for many years; four sisters ­ Bea Branum of Belmont, Calif., Velma Lynch of San Francisco; Donna Gray of High Ridge, Mo., and Betty Freeman of San Bruno, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, her parents, four brothers and five sisters.
The funeral was March 1 at First United Methodist Church of Hardy with Marcia Dodd and Troy Harvey officiating. Burial followed at Oaklawn Cemetery in Highland.
Pallbearers were Randy Brister, Wendell Brister, Ricky Brister, Russell Bassham, Bob Vance and Jack Carmon.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Hardy.

Sherman C. Bates
Sherman Carroll Bates, 91, of Hardy died Nov. 10, 2000, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born July 8, 1907, in Elba, he was the son of Emory and Bertha Bates. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hardy for 65 years. He had served as a member of the Hardy and Highland School boards and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Wilson Lodge 432 for more than 50 years. He was also a former Sharp County judge. He worked as a teacher, a timberman, a car dealer and a Mobil Oil distributor.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Laura Marlene Actkinson Bates; a son, James C. Bates and his wife Carol, of Hardy; two grandchildren -Darren and wife Carrie Bates of Hardy and Karyn and husband Michael Fitch of Okla.; a great-grandchild, Brady Bates, of Hardy; a brother, Adam Bates of Armona, Calif.; and a sister, Sophia Hobbs of Clovis, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Woodrow Bates.
The funeral was Nov. 13 at New Hope Baptist Church on Highway 175 with the Rev. Troy Harvey officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery in Highland.
Pallbearers were Russell Bassham, Jack Carmon, Charles Ed Wilson, Bob Vance, Jack Kimbrell and Bill Campbell. Honorary pallbearers include Dale Bassham, Max Hill, Curtis Bratcher, Chuck Holden, Junior Trivitt, Willie Gene Oyler, A.L. Hutson and Sid Lankford.
Memorials may be made to Wilson Lodge 432, P.O. Box 602, Hardy, AR 72542.
