Gladys M. Davis
Gladys Mary Orr Davis, 84, of Ash Flat died Dec. 29, 2000, at Baxter County Regional Hospital in Mountain Home.
Born Oct. 26, 1916, in Ash Flat, she was the daughter of John Orr and Sophia Hotchkiss Orr. She married Sid Davis in 1941 in Missouri. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Hardy.
Survivors include a daughter, Golddcan Crownover of Morrilton; two brothers - J. T. Orr of Ash Flat, and Clifton Orr of Cave City; a sister, Geldene Norris of Ash Flat; three grandchildren - Nicole Eldridge, Ryan Crownover and Syndey Crownover; and a great-granddaughter, Andrea Eldridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters - Virgie King and Faye Nix; and a brother, Wayne Orr.
The funeral was Jan. 2 at First Baptist Church in Hardy with Rev. Ferrell Duffel officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery in Highland.
Arrangements were under the direction of Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel of Highland.
Nellie Dowdy
Nellie Dowdy, 83, of Oxford died Jan. 24 at Baxter County Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home.
Born Oct. 21, 1917, in Day, she was the daughter of Jess and Delia Dixon Jackson. She married Dee Dowdy in 1934 in Day and was a homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of Rockford, Ill.; two daughters Dortha Felton of Ash Flat, and Thelma Mitchell of Oxford; a brother Jessie Jackson of Franklin; a sister Icie Ferguson of Myron; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
The funeral was Jan. 27 at Friendship Baptist Church in Highland with the Rev. Mike Stanley officiating. Burial followed at the Dowdy family cemetery in Myron.
Pallbearers were Steven V. Mitchell, Jimmy V. Mitchell, Thomas W. Davis, Everett V. Helm Jr., Douglas Joe Ray and Delbert Parnell.
Dr. Ray Christena
Dr. Ray Clifford Christena, 86, of Cherokee Village died Jan. 12, 2002, at Ash Flat Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Aug. 17, 1915, in Indianapolis, Ind., he was the son of Clifford Christena and Marie Ayers Christena. He married Patricia Bedwell Feb. 16, 1947.
He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics in August of 1939. He graduated from the New York University in Bronx, N.Y. with a bachelor’s degree in September of 1942. At this same time he was an Air Force Meteorologist and held the rank of First Lieutenant. He graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., with a master’s degree in atomic physics and chemistry in August of 1948. He received his doctoral degree in chemistry in February of 1951 from Indiana University.
In 1949 he worked part time for the University of Wisconsin where he had a research fellowship for six months. In 1956 and 1957 he was at Brooklyn Polytech in Brooklyn, N.Y.; from 1959 through 1961 he was at Temple University in Philadelphia and also at the University of South Carolina, Indiana University, the University of Salt Lake City, and the University of Missouri at Columbia, Mo.
After receiving his Ph.D he worked as a research chemist for DuPont from 1951 through 1958. He worked as a supervisor and as part of a research group for Thiokol Chemical Corporation from 1958 until 1963. During this time he received five patents on missile fuel. He worked in research for Celanese Corporation from 1963 until 1966 and held one patent which was licensed and patented in 43 countries.
He was a research group leader in Wichita, Kan. from 1967 until retirement in 1980. During this time Dr. Christena held seven patents in polymers and polychlorinated phenols. He was the inventor of High Polymer Emulsion with patents in 41 countries. This fuel is still used today in the minuteman missile.
Dr. Christena was also an artist and a member of the Strawberry River Art Association. He was a weather watcher for KAIT8 in Jonesboro. He belonged to the 9th Bombers Group of the 131th bomb wing of the 13th Air Force of the United States Army Air Corp. He was also a member of the American Legion.
He moved here with his wife, Pat, 20 years ago from Wichita. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Pat; two sons – John M. Christena of Flint, Mich., and James Ray Christena of Wichita; three daughters – Julia A. McFall of Centennial, Colo., Anna Marie Roedel of Highland Ranch, Colo., and Mary L. Paulsen of Heston, Kan; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Jan. 18 at Tri-County’s Cherokee Chapel in Highland with the Rev. Johnnie M. Williams officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Tri-County’s Cherokee Chapel of Highland.

Makayalee Duncan
Makayalee Joy Duncan of Cherokee Village was stillborn Jan. 4, 2002, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
She was the daughter of Tiffany Duncan of Jonesboro.
A private funeral service will be held at a later date.
Luther Dunn Jr.
Luther Dunn Jr. 81, of Hardy, died Jan. 13, 2002, at Ash Flat Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Aug. 15, 1920, in Daly City, Calif., he was the son of Maria Morales Dunn and Luther Dunn. He was retired from Berry Auto Parts in Hardy and retired with over 24 years of service with the Hardy Fire Department. While there he served a year as assistant chief. He served 10 years on Hardy City Council, was on the board of Ozark Baptist Camp and was a member and deacon at Foothills Baptist Church in Hardy. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include two sons and their wives – Alan and Jeannie Dunn of Jonesboro, and Jeff and Ruth Dunn of Mountain Home; two daughters and their husbands – Sharon and Doyl Phelps of Agnos, and Lonna and Jim Read of Hardy, and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, May E. Dunn on March 29, 1999; The funeral was Jan. 16at Heath Oak Hill Chapel with Norvin Jones and Gerald Bolin officiating. Funeral honors were presented by the Jonesboro Fire Department Honor Guard. Burial followed in the Oaklawn Cemetery at Highland.
Arrangements were under the direction of Heath Oak Hill Chapel.

Rudolf John Dusek, 91, of Cherokee Village died June 9, 2001, at his home.

Clifford W. Elders
Clifford W. Elders, 93, of Elgin, Ill., formerly of Cherokee Village, died Dec. 31, 2000, at ASTA Care Center in Elgin.
Born June 4, 1907, in Calhoun, Ill., he was an accountant for U.S. Steel for 42 years and attended Faith Lutheran Church in Capentersville, Ill.
He married Agnes Jan. 20, 1929. He and his wife retired to Cherokee Village in 1968 where he was a member of Cherokee Village's first EMT class, graduating in 1975. While living in Cherokee Village, he attended Peace Lutheran Church.
He began the Stamp Club in Cherokee Village and was a member of the American Philatelic Club for over 25 years. He was a Farm Bureau director, on the Rural Health Committee, a State Farm Bureau director and a second lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol. He was also a member of the Scottish Society of the Ozark Region, a member of North Sharp County Ministerial Alliance and Spring River Community Resource Council.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis L. and Allan Breese of Streamwood, Ill.; two grandchildren and grandchildren-in-laws Jill and Lawrence Kempf of Carpentersville, Ill., and Sarah and Bill Burke of Streamwood; six great-grandchildren Jess Kempf, Jacob Kempf, Brenna Burke, Kaylynn Burke, Christine Costantine and Angela Costantine.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Bell and Clara Elder; and his wife, who died Nov. 9, 1996.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. March 26 at Peace Lutheran Church.

Robert Emhler
Robert "Bob" C. W. Emhler, 88, of Cherokee Village died Feb. 2, 2001, at Batesville.
Born Oct. 29, 1912, at Orchard Farm, Mo., he was the son Martin and Wilhelm Plack-emeier Emhler. He was a carpenter for McDonald Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis before retiring to Cherokee Village in 1976. He was a member of the Lions Club and a member of Peace Lutheran Church of Cherokee Village.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives Virginia I. Cool Emhler and Irene B. Mueller Emhler; and by a brother, Martine Emhler.
The funeral was Feb. 5 at Peace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Brian Pummill officiating. A graveside service was Feb. 7 at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in St. Charles, Mo.

Robena Endsley
Robena D. Endsley, 85, of Jonesboro died Jan. 14 at Ash Flat Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center where she resided for a month.
Born in Pine Valley, Miss., she lived several years in the Bay area before moving to Jonesboro where she lived most of her life. She was a retired nurse from St. Bernard's Medical Center and was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Jonesboro.
Survivors include a daughter, Geraldine Evans of Ash Flat; a son, Ronald Endsley of Hope; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Endsley; a son, Donnie Glen Endsley; and a sister, Anna M. Spurlock.
The funeral was Jan. 17 at Emerson Memorial Chapel in Jonesboro with Rev. Matt Smith officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery in Jonesboro.

Wilma Estes
Wilma Wells Estes, 81, of Mammoth Spring, formerly of Ash Flat, died Dec. 14, 2001, at her daughter’s home.
Born Oct. 9, 1920, in Myron, she was the daughter of William C. Wells and Virgie Mylinda Hastings Wells. She was a member of Ash Flat First Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband – Shirley and Doyle Reynolds of Mammoth Spring; two stepsons and their wives – John and Frances Estes, and Joe and Ann Estes; two brothers – Stacy Wells and Tillman Wells, both of Wenatchee, Wash.; a sister, Evelyn Britts of Spokane, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Dora Wells of Ash Flat; four grandchildren – Dennis Reynolds, Tina McCarson, Steven Herrington and Denise Herrington; six step-grandchildren – Chris Estes, David Estes, James Estes, Julie Johnson, Mark Estes and Mike Estes; four great-grandchildren – Kayla Reynolds and Dakota Reynolds, Karley Herrington and Bethany Shea Herrington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Truman Brown; her second husband, Clyde Estes; two brothers – J.P. Wells and James D. Wells; and a sister, Pauline Seamen.
The funeral was Dec. 17 at First Baptist Church in Ash Flat with the Rev. Van Brown officiating. Burial followed at Wiles Cemetery.

Herbert E. Evans
Herbert Elwood Evans, 73, of Ash Flat died Jan. 18 at his home.
Born March 23, 1927, he was the son of Margarette DuVall Evans and Herbert S. Evans. He was a retired construction worker.
Survivors include two sons Steven Evans of Cherokee Village, and Tim Evans of Ash Flat; four daughters Janice Evans of Ash Flat, Connie Hallen of Valley Ford, Calif., and Pamela Neighbours and Lynnae Shaw, both of Sonoma, Calif.; two brothers Alva Ray Evans of Hardy, and Bill Evans of Cherokee Village; two sisters Willane Gaston and Luceile Williams, both of Franklin; 26 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was Jan. 24 at Heath Oak Hill Chapel with James Cooper officiating. Burial followed in Old Baptist Cemetery in Ash Flat.
James Eversoll
James A. “Buddy” Eversoll, 66, of Ash Flat died Dec. 8, 2001 at his home.
Born June 30, 1935, in Big Flat, he was the son of Melvin Eversoll and Lula Martin Eversoll. He worked many years as a farmer. He move to Ash Flat 12 years ago from Leslie. He was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include a son, Ronnie Eversoll of Missouri; three daughters – Carol King of Illinois, Sharon Eversoll of Florida, and Linda Kelly of Michigan; a brother, Troy Eversoll of Ash Flat; a sister, Fern Woodard of Pocahontas; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maybell; and a brother, Lee Roy Eversoll.
The funeral was Dec. 14 at the Round Mountain Pentecostal Church near Timbo with the Rev. Carl Mize and the Rev. Charlie Holt officiating. Burial followed at Farris Cemetery in Timbo.

Harold Ewaldsen
Harold Ewaldsen, 74, of Cherokee Village died Jan. 9. 2001, at his residence.
Born Sept. 4, 1926, in Philadelphia, he was the son of Marie Andrea Berthelson Ewaldsen and Vagn Ewaldsen. He was a graduate of Penn State and retired from Cetainteed Building Supply after 38 years. He was a member of Cherokee Village Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rev. Joan Elwadsen; four daughters Kris Ewaldsen of Cherokee Village; Andrea Stone of Saddle; Karen Foley of Chicago; and Rebecca Munroe of Ash Flat; a sister, Christa Richter of Neward, Del.; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Beatrice Farrell
Beatrice M. Posner Farrell, 78, of Cherokee Village died May 7, 2001.
Born April 22, 1923, in Ottawa, Ill., she was the daughter of Owen Edward Posner and Mary Gerogett Vincent Posner. She was a cook and attended St. Michael's Catholic Church in Cherokee Village. She was also a member of the altar and rosary and was involved in church fund-raising.
Survivors include eight daughters Connie Armstrong of Cherokee Village, Sandra Crosiar of Utica, Ill., Ruth Schierholz of Molene, Ill., Rose Barth of LaSalle, Ill., Kathy Siebert, Beatrice West, Alica Green and Becky Farrell, all of Ottawa, Ill.; two brothers Robert Posner of Ottawa, and Janette Ward of Michigan; 22 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Anita Mason; two brothers Edward Posner and Owen Posner; and a sister, Madaline Duvall.
A memorial service will be at St. Michael's Catholic Church at a later date. Burial will be in Illinois.

Mary Farris
Mary M. Farris, 65, of Evening Shade died Jan. 1, 2002, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born June 13, 1936, at Evening Shade, she was the daughter of Joseph Newton and Tina Medlock Kent. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church at Evening Shade where she served as church clerk for many years.
Survivors include her husband, Eddie Farris of the home; a son, Tony Farris of Cave City; a daughter, Rena Gail Bowser of Evening Shade; two brothers – Boyd Kent of Judsonia and Frank R. Kent of Searcy; a sister, Billie Joe Martin of Searcy; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Shirley Farris; a brother, Sam Kent; and two sisters, Bernice Lovelace and an infant, Ida Mae Kent.
The funeral was Jan. 3 at First Baptist Church in Evening Shade with Noble Wiles and James Walker officiating. Burial followed in Evening Shade Cemetery.

Fern Farrow
Fern Farrow, 82, of Horseshoe Bend died Nov. 8, 2000, at the Calico Rock Medical Center.
Born March 4, 1918, in Flint, Mich., she was the daughter of Albert Mahnke and Nettie Sherwood Mahnke. She married Gordon E. Farrow June 12, 1937, in Flint. She worked for the Easter Seal program. She was a member of the Horseshoe Bend Lady Lions and the Presbyterian Woman's Circle.
Survivors include her husband, Gordon Farrow of Horseshoe Bend; two daughters - Gail Lynette Kozicki of Geln Milla, Pa., and Linda Sue Cassidy of Addison, Ill.; a brother, Lyle Mahnke of Port Hope, Mich., a sister, Ula Nyborg of North Richland, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Malinee Marks of Berran Springs, Mich., Josephine Baldwin of New Zealand, Gordon Kozicki of Chester, Pa., Patrick Cassidy of Seattle, Wash., Marianne Graco of Chicago, Kristin Manna of Addison, Ill., and Brad Cassidy of St. Louis; 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
A memorial service was Nov. 12 at the Faith Presbyterian Church in Horseshoe Bend with the Rev. Burle Mattingly officiating.

Patsy Fears
Patsy Sue Fears, 55, of Cave City, died Jan. 1, 2002, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born Oct. 21, 1946, in Stewart, Okla., she was the daughter of Albert and Louise Luna Wortman. She was a homemaker, retired from ConAgra, and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Cave City.
Survivors include her husband, Donald E. Fears; two sons – Darren Thornton and Scott Davis, both of Cave City; three daughters – Lana Norris and Sandra Self, both of Cave City, and Donna Andrews of Batesville; two brothers – Lonney Wortman of Willcox, Ariz., and Martin Wortman of Queen Creek, Ariz.; two sisters – Neatress Nino of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Pansy Zahn of Batesville; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Rickey Thornton; and a niece, Dee Dee Deloach.
The funeral was Jan. 4 at First Assembly of God Church of Cave City with Bobby Sanders officiating. Burial followed in Marvin Cemetery at Nelsonville.

Fern Fredrick
Fern Dunlap Fredrick, 70, of Williford, formerly of Hardy, died Aug. 30, 2001, at St. Dernards's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
Born Sept.27, 1930, in Piggott, she was the daughter of Clarence A. and Nina Marie Hardin Coyle. She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Baptist Church of Wirth.
Survivors include four sons - Dennis Dickey of Ash Flat, Samuel Dickey of Mammoth Spring, and Jim Dunlap, both of Hardy, two daughters - Ann McKnight of Williford, and Jennie Smith of Mammoth Spring; two brothers - Bill Coyle of West Plains, MO., and Pete Coyle of Spencer, Iowa; two sisters - Marie McKay of West Plains, and Ruth Lowery of Roanoke, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, a brother and a granddaughter.
Wade Fraley
Wade Welch Fraley, 88, of Hardy died April 5, 2001, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born Feb. 15, 1913, in Corinth, Miss., he was the son of James Jackson Fraley and Catherine Louise Barton Farley. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II. He moved with his family to the Hardy area over 80 years ago, living in the Liberty Hill community. He worked for many years as a farmer before retiring. He attended Spring River Baptist Church in Hardy.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Jimmy "Butch" and Sandy Harmon of Hardy; four daughters and sons-in-law Gloria and Freddie Taylor of Mammoth Spring, Paula and David Grimes of Melbourne, Shelia and James Titus of Ash Flat, and Gwen and Rusty Roebuck of Cave City; a brother, Howard Fraley of Ash Flat; 11 grandchildren Joy Underwood, Heather Denton Mbaye, Jeremy Harmon, Christopher Denton, Brandi Titus, Johnathan Harmon, Mark Titus, Katie Harmon, Bethany Roebuck, Rebekah Roebuck and Rachel Roebuck; and five great-grandchildren Segan Underwood, Adrienne Fulgham, Taylor Fulgham, Junior Copeland and Kristen Ellis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dessie Fraley; a granddaughter Stephanie Taylor Fulgham; and two brothers James Fraley and Murray Fraley.
The funeral was April 8 at Liberty Hill Methodist Chruch with the Rev. Floyd Rikard officiating. Burial followed at Liberty Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Frank Arnold, Russell Miller, John Miller, Charlie McCormick, Gary McCormick and Con Spurlock.
Honorary pallbearers were W.R. "Fat" Murphy, Chuck Murphy, J.R. Murphy, Hubert "Chief" Hawkins, Norman Girtman and Joe Spurlock.
