Gus J. Beevers
Services for Gus J. Beevers, 94, of Ruidoso, were May 20 at the First United Methodist Church of Wolfforth, with the Rev. Eddie Marcum officiating. Burial was at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Mr. Beevers died Tuesday, May 16, 2000 in Ruidoso.
He was born Dec. 8, 1905, in Rush Springs, Okla.
He married Lucile Neal Loving on Oct. 25, 1930, in Clovis. She died May 3, 1996. He moved to Lubbock, Texas in 1952.
Later, he owned and operated the Dutchman Shop in Carlisle until 1984. He moved to Ruidoso in 1992.
During World War II, he trained welders for the military. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wolfforth.
He was preceded in death by daughters Betty and Lula; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.
Survivors include a son, Max, of Ruidoso; daughters Patsy Giullot of Ruidoso, Linda Thompson of Texas City, Texas, and Judy Good of St. Charles, Mo.; sisters Linnie Thomas of Tucumcari, and Dorothy Rose of Placerville, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Wolfforth.
Harvey Adams
A memorial service for Harvey Adams, 65, of Ruidoso will be today at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Ruidoso Downs with the Rev. Randy Widener officiating.
Mr. Adams died Feb. 10 [2001] at his home. He was born Oct. 14, 1935 in Ada, Okla. A retired heavy equipment operator, Mr. Adams had lived in Ruidoso for two years.
He married JoAnne Crane on July 1, 1989 at Las Vegas, Nev.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnne of Ruidoso; a son, Thomas Adams of Missoula, Mont.; six daughters, Sue Loftis of Lawrenceville, Ill.; Cathy Wagner of Alamogordo; Caryl Neilsen of Salt Lake City; Lori Miner of Aurora, Colo.; Dawn Rardin of Winchester, Va.; and Page Cochran of Lancaster, Calif.; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

R. D. Lee
Services for R. D. Lee, 93, of Lovington will take place at 10 a.m. Feb. 15 at the First Baptist Church in Lovington with Rev. Harry Pittam and Rev. Jake Armstrong officiating. Burial will take place at the Lovington Cemetery.
Mr. Lee died Feb. 12 [2001] at his residence.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1951 where he also served as a deacon. He served on the Lovington School Board from 1955 to 1969.
Mr. Lee married Leora Culp on April 6, 1930 in Lovington. She preceded him in death.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Pat Lee, two grandsons, one grand daughter, and a brother, Giles Lee of Lovington.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Rogers Funeral Home of Lovington.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch or Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame.
Cora Dutton
Graveside services for Cora LaMay Dutton, 95, of Capitan will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Angus Cemetery, with the Rev. Ray Wells officiating. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today at LaGrone Funeral Chapel.
Mrs. Dutton died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003.
She was born Jan. 15, 1908, the daughter of LeRoy and Mamie LaMay, who came in a covered wagon from Kansas as pioneers to Lincoln County in 1899 at the base of Loma Grande.
Mrs. Dutton lived most of her life in Lincoln County. She worked for many years at Ruidoso Downs Race Track, owned and operated a saloon in Capitan and raised cattle on a small ranch southwest of Capitan.
She was a staunch Republican and classic Western figure. She loved fiddle music, dancing and her second home in Truth or Consequences. She traveled the Southwest and had many adventures, including riding the mules into the Grand Canyon when she was in her 80s, and appearing as an extra in the movie, “The Outfitters.”
She married Ralph R. Barber in 1925, but was widowed in 1927. In 1934, she married G.L. Dutton, who preceded her in death in 1951. She was also preceded in death by her only son, Ralph Odel Barber; her parents; sisters Faye, Sylva, Jeanine, Ruth and Oma; and brothers Fred and John.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Reba Barber; grandchildren Robert Barber and his wife, Cheryl, Rhonda Burrows, and Rebecca Ilgen and her husband, Dave; five great-grandchildren; four-great-great-grandchildren; brothers Roy and Tommy LaMay; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be made to the Angus Cemetery Association.
Ruth Foster
Graveside services for Ruth Foster, 80, of Ruidoso were Thursday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Mark Davis officiating.
Mrs. Foster died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, in Ruidoso.
She was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Raton.
She has lived in Lincoln County for 22 years, moving here from Garden Grove, Calif. She was a member of the Baptist Church and retired restaurant manager.
Survivors include sons Harvey and Dennis Foster; and a brother, Garland Owen.

Maureen Sullivan
Services in Omaha, Neb., are pending for Maureen Sullivan, 93, formerly of Capitan.
Mrs. Sullivan passed away Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the Gretna Nursing Home in Gretna, Neb.
She was born Dec. 14, 1910, in Woodward, Iowa.
She married Paul Sullivan on Jan. 30, 1937. She moved to Capitan from Iowa City, Iowa, in 1980. For many years she wrote a column for the Lincoln County News called “My House by the Side of the Road.” She moved to Omaha in 1999 where she resided with her daughter.
She is survived by a son, Tom Sullivan, and his wife, Pat, of Capitan; a daughter, Patricia Sullivan and her husband Jace of Omaha; grandsons, Mike Sullivan of Houston, Brian Sullivan of Denver, and Paul Sullivan of Dallas; and a granddaughter, Katie Sullivan, of Omaha. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Paul, preceded her in death in 1978.
Lois Daugherty
Funeral services for Lois Hodgin Daugherty, 92, of Ruidoso, will be at 1 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church of Eunice, with Pastor David Bonnell officiating. Burial will follow in the Eunice Cemetery.
Mrs. Daugherty died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, in Alamogordo.
She was born Nov. 26, 1911, in Chicota, Texas.
She received a B.A. from East Central Oklahoma College and an M.A. in education from New Mexico State University, where she also did work on her doctoral.
She began teaching in 1933 and retired in 1977. She taught and was a counselor in the Eunice High School and taught in the elementary grades in Hobbs.
She lived in Eunice from 1942 until 1977, when she moved to Ruidoso.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eunice, played bridge, enjoyed and taught square dancing and loved her students.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Lee Daugherty-Moon and her husband, Matthew, of Santa Fe; nieces Beckie Lindley of Seattle, Wash., and Sherry Thomas of Houston, Texas; a nephew, Rob Lindley, of Fairfax Station, Va.; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin D. Daugherty, in 1967; a son, Mike Daugherty; a daughter, Kerry Johnson; her parents Louis Randolph and Viola (Teems) Hodgin; a brother, Homer Hodgin; and a sister, Nell Lindley.

Ada Marie Burns
Graveside services for Ada Marie Burns, 88, of Lee's Summitt, Mo., and formerly of Ruidoso, will be at 10 a.m. today at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Ruidoso, with Bobbie Dobbs of First Christian Church officiating.
Mrs. Burns died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in Lee's Summitt.
She was born Feb. 14, 1916, at DeQueen, Ark.
She moved to Ruidoso in 1963 from Roswell and served as postmaster of the Alto Post Office from 1975 until 1983. She moved to Lee’s Summitt 11 years ago.
She was a member of the National Association of Postmasters and the First Christian Church in Ruidoso.
She married Clyde Burns on April 13, 1940, in Idabel, Okla., and he preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 1985.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Robert Joseph Palko
Visitation for Robert Joseph “Bob” Palko, 55, of Alto, will be from 4-6 p.m. today at LaGrone Funeral Chapel, with funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Harvest Church and burial to follow at Capitan Cemetery, with Bill Yates officiating.
Mr. Palko died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at Baca Campground in Lincoln County.
He was born Dec. 16, 1948, in Joliet, Ill.
He had lived in Lincoln County since 1973, moving here from DeKalb, Ill.
He was a member of the Bonito Volunteer Fire Department, worked for the U.S. Forest Service every summer since 1974 and retired from the Ruidoso Municipal School District in 1997. He was a member of Grace Harvest Church.
He married Cheryl Moses on Aug. 9, 1970, in Elmhurst, Ill.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl, of Alto; daughters Amy Palko of Alexandria, Va., and Sherry Palko of Westminster, Colo.; his parents Stephen and Marge Palko of Joliet, Ill.; and a sister, Rosalynne Halpin, of Eureka, Ill.
The family suggests memorials to the Bonito Volunteer Fire Department or to the Palko Fund at First Federal Bank in Ruidoso or Captain.

Freddie Apache, Sr.
A funeral Mass for Freddie Apache Sr., 40, of Mescalero, will be at 10 a.m. today, with burial to follow at the Mescalero Cemetery.
Mr. Apache died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at his home.
He was born Sept. 23, 1963, in Albuquerque.
He moved to Mescalero in 1985 from Canoncito.
He was a woodcutter and attended St. Joseph’s Mission.
He married Velva Chee on Aug. 23, 1963 in Mescalero.
Survivors include his wife, Velva; a son, Freddie Apache Jr.; his mother, Winnie Apache of Canoncito; brothers Fred Apache, Michael Apache, Martin Apache and Casey Apache; sisters Velma Apachito, Lupe Apache, Delores Apache and Jacqueline Platero.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Marty Apache; and a sister, Jerriann Blake.
Wilbur Shackelford
A funeral service for Wilbur Lowell Shackelford, 81, or Roswell, was held recently at Grace Community Church in Roswell, with Pastor Rick Hale officiating. Burial was at South Park Cemetery.
Mr. Shackelford died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center.
He was born April 16, 1923, in Valliant, Okla., to John Clifton Shackelford and Lela Mae Shackelford.
He graduated from Valliant High School, where he was a member of the Valliant High School Hall of Fame. He later joined the United States Air Force and was a World War II veteran.
He married Hazel Smith in Dallas, Texas, on Oct. 7, 1946.
He received his degree in geology and he and his family moved to Roswell in 1951, where he has worked as a geologist and an independent oil operator in and around the area.
Mr. Shackelford has been active in serving his community. He was a state representative for Chaves County and served as chairman of the board for Educational Finance, and was a past member of the Roswell School Board. He belonged to the First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Sertoma Club and of the Mesa Park swimming pool since 1962.
Survivors include sons Don Shackelford of Midland, Texas, Sam Shackelford of Ruidoso, and Bob Shackelford of Midland; a special friend, Frances Washichek, of Roswell; brothers Luther Shackelford of Monroe, La., Raphael Shackelford of Oklahoma city, Okla., and Jerry Shackelford of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; grandchildren Meredith and Brady Shackelford, Bailey Rucker, Tyler, Samantha and Andria Shackelford, and Jaclyn Shackelford.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Smith; his parents; brothers Everett Dale Shackelford and Jack Clifton Shackelford; and a sister, Hazel Daniel.

Lore Trujillo-Miller
A memorial service for Lore Trujillo-Miller, 72, of Capitan, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Christ Community Fellowship, with Pastor Ed Vinson officiating and music by Becky Koreny.
Mrs. Trujillo-Miller died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004.
She was born May 17, 1932, in Encinoso, the youngest of 11 children to Alejandro and Emilia Trujillo.
She married Manuel Miller Jr. of Capitan Sept. 9, 1960. She lived in Capitan all her life and was known for always having food to feed anyone that was hungry, even strangers.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) Miller-Montoya; a son-in-law, Joseph Montoya; grandchildren Gerald Montoya and Emilia Montoya; and a brother, Salomon Trujillo. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; five sisters; and her husband.

Jay O. Dossey
No services are scheduled for Jay O. Dossey, 56, of Alamogordo.
Mr. Dossey died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Alamogordo.
He was born July 10, 1948, in Tyler, Texas. He was a resident of Alamogordo for 21 years.
He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and was a Vietnam veteran who received three Purple Hearts.
Survivors include daughters Tanya Dossey of Wakefield, Mass., Sanya Dossey, Carol Dossey and Katrina Dossey, of Alamogordo, and Patricia Dossey of Ruidoso; sons Jay Dossey Jr. and John Dossey, of Alamogordo; and grandchildren Reanna Lussier of Wakefield, and Dante Turner, Tre Turner, Kaleb Clancy, A’leia West, Ariyana Dossey, Alexis Swapp and Hailey Swapp, of Alamogordo.

Sibyl Erwin Riddle
Funeral services for Sibyl Erwin Riddle, 96, of Ruidoso, will be 10 a.m. today, Sept. 24, in the First Baptist Church in Ruidoso, with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery and the Rev. Tim Gilliland officiating.
Mrs. Riddle died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in Ruidoso.
She was born May 6, 1908 in Eastland, Texas. She moved to Ruidoso in 1964 from Abilene, Texas.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church.
She married Jay Riddle in April of 1925, and he preceded her in death on June 13, 2003.
Survivors include a son, Don Riddle, of Abilene, Texas; a daughter, Barbara Dean, of Ruidoso; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Roy Edward Payton

A memorial service for Roy Edward Payton, 47, of Carlsbad is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Hale Cemetery in Ruidoso Downs.
Mr. Payton died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque.
He was born Oct. 22, 1956, in Alamogordo to Ed and Thelma Payton.
Survivors include his father, Edward; and stepmother Bea of Capitan; a sister, Colline Snell, and her husband, Bill, of League City, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma, and sister, Margaret Ann Payton.
Michael James Gomez
A wake service for Michael James Gomez, 51, of Santa Fe, was held last Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Dolores Gomez officiating. A mass of Christian burial was offered Thursday, with Father Bryant Hausfeld as celebrant, and burial followed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
Mr. Gomez died Oct. 9, 2004, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Santa Fe.
He was born April 20, 1953, in Alamogordo, the son of Vicente S. and Matilde Valdez Gomez.
Mr. Gomez worked as a budget analyst for the Department of Health for the State of New Mexico. He was a member of the St. Francis Cathedral Catholic Church in Santa Fe, the Mayordomo, and was a member of the L. Gallegos Ditch Association.
Survivors include brothers V. Ruben Gomez, and his wife, Mary Lou, of Alamogordo, and Adolfo Gomez of Glencoe; a sister, Louella Arenas, of Alamogordo; nephews Ben Arenas and Ruben J. Gomez of Albuquerque and Tom Arenas, and his wife Marie, of Las Cruces; a niece, Jennifer R. Gomez, of Albuquerque; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
