Dodge, Leon
May 8, 1921 - April 12, 2003
Leon A. Dodge, Jr., 81, of Damariscotta, passed away on April 12 at Joshua Tree, in Morongo Valley, Cal., following complications from a recent stroke.
He was born in Damariscotta on May 8, 1921, the son of the late Leon A. Dodge and Christine (Huston) Dodge.
His brother recalls that “Lee was a real math whiz, great with numbers,” and that he delighted in inventing games. He had a lifelong love of walking in the woods, where he maintained excellent trails.
Very keen on the inspection of new building construction, he never tired of discussing what The Latest in modern plumbing and heating.
For most of his life, Lee was on hand to lend help to his widowed mother and brother at their homes. He occasionally traveled with family members to California, Florida, and the Bahamas.
Mr. Dodge is survived by his brother, Joel Huston Dodge of Damariscotta, and his nephew Joel Dodge Jr. of Nobleboro.
A private memorial was held at Bethlehem Cemetery on May 23.
Anderson, Brett
Sept. 9, 1962 -
Brett David Anderson, 40, of Nobleboro, passed away unexpectedly at his home on May 24. He was born in Damariscotta, on Sept. 9, 1962 the son of Donna (Chickering) and Charles W. Anderson, Sr.
He graduated from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle in 1981. He became a builder and skilled finish carpenter employed by Rob Leavitt Builders.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed the sanctuary of nature. Brett loved gardening, fishing, kayaking, karate, camping especially with a good bonfire in the company of his family and friends. He enjoyed barbecuing and was a master at doing so. He enjoyed collecting various treasures of old as well as collecting baseball cards with his two sons.
He is survived by his two loving sons, Bryce and Devan Anderson and their mother Kyla Farrar of Bremen, his brother Chuck Anderson and his wife Amy and their son Liam of Bristol, many aunts, uncles and cousins as well as his close companion Laura Cabot of Waldoboro, and his dog “Lady.”
He is fondly remembered by a close circle of friends, family and loved ones as a hard worker with an eye for detail as well as a good friend who was always willing to lend a hand.

Harris, Warren

Warren Ellsworth Harris, husband of the late, Elizabeth “Nellie” Harris, died May 28 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta, he was 86.
Mr. Harris was born in Trenton, N.J. on Dec. 6, 1916, the son of Leslie N. and Ramah Harris. He graduated from Trenton Central High School, Class of 1936. Mr. Harris served in the Army and Air Force as a Technical Sergeant during WW II and Korea. In 1953 Mr. Harris married his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth “Nellie” Dow. They lived in Levittown, Penn., and then West Trenton, N.J. where they had four children.
Mr. Harris was employed as a Safety Inspector with the New Jersey Department of Labor and industry for 20 years and served as Industry Defense Coordinator for the N.J. National Civil Defense Program; after retiring from the New Jersey Department of Labor he moved his family to Maine in 1971, and worked at the Nobleboro and Waldoboro Post Offices. He was a proud member of the American Legion and Elks.
Predeceased by his loving wife Elizabeth “Nellie” Harris on May 16 and his brother Charles W. Harris.
He is survived by his sons, Leslie K. and his wife, Paula of South Portland, Robert W. and his wife, Lori of Damariscotta; daughters, Virginia M. Burnham and her husband, David of Damariscotta, Barbara A. Boone and her husband, Brian of Nobleboro; grandchildren, Holly and Stephanie Harris, Jennifer and Graham Burnham and Hannah Boone, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Taylor, Cecilia

Cecilia Taylor, 42, of North Whitefield, passed away May 30 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta after a brief illness.
She was born in Augusta on June 10, 1960. Cecilia was employed by Joseph Kirschner Co., for 18 years. She was chief steward for the United Food Workers Union. She was also active in the United Way campaigns.
Cecilia was preceded in death by a brother, Roland Sirois; and a sister, Geneva Skyraven.
Surviving is her husband, Phillip R. Taylor of North Whitefield; a stepson, Phillip R.S. Taylor and his wife Jennifer of Ohio; a stepdaughter, Christina L. Sanborn and her husband, Stephen, of North Whitefield; four brothers, Norman Sirois of Lebanon, Maurice Sirois of Chelsea, Raymond Sirois of Kentucky and Peter Sirois of Augusta; five sisters, Joanne Dechaine of Grand Isle, Reina Dennis of West Gardiner, Therese Peaslee of Rockland, Elizabeth Cody of Florida and Bernadette Sirois of Corinna; three grandchildren, Tyler Crumley of North Whitefield and Emmitt Taylor and Lauren Taylor, both of Ohio; many nieces and nephews; two special cousins, Paul and Irmy Sirois of Lewiston; and her mother-in-law, Bertha T. Taylor of Gardiner.
Cecilia was a person who had a tremendous love for animals of all kinds. Her “family” also included eight loving dogs, six loving cats and two 1100-pound pigs.

McLain, Harris

Harris “Rusty” McLain, 88, passed away on May 31 in Waldoboro. Rusty was born Dec. 29, 1914 in New Harbor, a son of Harris and Geneva Gifford McLain.
He attended Waldoboro High School and then joined the Army, serving in the Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons and New Guinea from 1942 through 1945. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the Asiastic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon.
After returning home, Rusty worked in a sporting goods store. He and his wife, Arlene, decided to move to Jackman where they opened their own business, The Grace Pond Camps. While living in Jackman, Rusty enjoyed working as a Maine Guide. After 10 years, the couple decided to move home to Waldoboro and Rusty was employed for GTE Sylvania until retirement.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and was an avid baseball fan.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW in Waldoboro.
His wife, Arlene, predeceased him in 1988.
He is survived by his brothers, Harlan G. McLain of Waldoboro and Floyd McLain of Round Pond; two nephews, and one niece as well as several cousins.
Graveside service 11 a.m., Tues., June 3, at the German Cemetery in Waldoboro. Both the American Legion and the VFW will take part in the service.

Bourque, Doris
Nov. 7, 1915 - May 15, 2003
Doris Ikalainen Bourque, passed away peacefully on May 15, at her home in Newcastle at the age of 87.
She was the daughter of Karl and Mary Ikalainen. Born in Fitchburg, Mass., on Nov. 7, 1915, she grew up in Princeton, Mass. and attended school there. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Lowell Teachers’ College and taught elementary school in Rutland and Holden, Mass. She then went on to teach remedial reading to students with learning disabilities. She raised her family in Princeton, Massachusetts and retired to Newcastle with her husband Ellsworth J. Bourque in 1996.
She was predeceased by her husband in January 2001.
Doris was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed handwork and was especially known for her braided and hooked rugs. She also did hospital volunteer work. Doris was proud of her Finnish heritage. She spoke Finnish fluently and traveled to Finland to research for family’s roots.
She is survived by her son, Bruce J. Bourque of Hallowell; daughter, Judith I. Bourque of Stockholm, Sweden, as well as three grandchildren, Amanda Bourque, Garrett Bourque and Jonathan Olivegren Bourque, a niece, Mary Ann Mastrorio; nephew, Allen Ikalainen; and her cat “Muffin”.

Wilcock, Joseph
Nov. 11, 1912 - May 12, 2003
Joseph Wilcock, 90, of South Bristol, passed away at Maine Medical Center, Portland, surrounded by his family and friends on May 12. He was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England on Nov. 11, 1912. He was one of six children born to James and Mary Wilcock.
In 1926 he immigrated to the U.S. and lived in the New Bedford, Mass., area. He attended the New Bedford and Westport, Mass. school systems.
On Aug. 24, 1936 he married June M. Morrison and they resided in Westport, Mass. In 1941 his employer General Baking Co. (Bond Bread) transferred him to Portland. They transferred him several times throughout the New England area. After 25 years he opened his own retail bakery and sold it four years later.
He then moved to New Hampshire and worked for Brooke Bond Tea Company as a salesman, later he worked for Toy Distributors Inc., of Framingham, Mass. A brief stint with Giran Valu Supermarkets of Haverhill, Mass., as store manager led him to Giltex Manufacturing as Regional Manager, bringing him to South Bristol. He then retired from Giltex.
Joseph and June became active in the Union Congregational Church of South Bristol. He also served two terms as selectman of South Bristol and spent many hours and days working beside June in her duties as Town Clerk.
Together they were active in the forming of the First Responders in South Bristol and both were members of the South Bristol Volunteer Fire Department.
As a member of the Mason and Eastern Star, he devoted much of his time to them.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilcock spent many hours about their boats, the June M., June M., Two and the June M. Three. His hobbies were model trains and gardening.
Mr. Wilcock is survived by his son, Richard D. Wilcock; daughter-in-law, Margaret M. Wilcock, Dorothy Wilcock; grandchildren Shelley, Debbie, Kevin, Diane, and Cindy; brother, Walter Wilcock of Brewster, Mass., as well as 10 great grandchildren.
Memorial service Sat., June 7, 11 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle. Arrangements are under the care of Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Interment
will follow at the West Bristol Cemetery.

Barker, David S.
Apr. 22, 1961 - Jan. 9, 2004
David S. Barker, 42, of Nobleboro died unexpectedly on the morning of January 9, at Miles Memorial Hospital, Damariscotta. Born in Beverly, Mass. April 22, 1961, he was the son of Robert A. and Dorothy (Grant) Barker.
Growing up in Hamilton, Mass. David attended local schools and in 1980 was honorably discharged from the U.S.M.C. In 1983 he graduated from Essex Agricultural Institute with a technical certificate in culinary arts.
From an early age David enjoyed the spotlight of performing, consequently after taking drum lessons from teacher Manny Wise, he played drums in several bands throughout the North Shore in Massachusetts. He married Ruth McGrath in 1988, settling in the North Shore. He worked for 12 years as an Electro-Mechanical Assembler at Imtran Industries, in Newburyport, Mass. and later switched careers to become a Customer Service Representative first for Eastern Bank in 1997 and BankNorth in 1999.
He and his wife came to Nobleboro in 2002 and at the time of his death he was employed as a PT Scheduler and patient registrationist at Miles Hospital. A much sought after drummer, David played for Waldo Theater productions, in Waldoboro and enjoyed jamming with other area musicians. After many years of playing, David filled a dream and like his mentor, began giving lessons, which he was also busy with at the time of his death. David greatly enjoyed hiking, fishing and boating. He was one of the Boston Bruins most ardent fans and most enjoyed the eccentricities of his close friends and family.
David leaves his wife of Nobleboro and his parents of Wenham, Mass. He also leaves his daughter Coreen McGrath of Danville, NH; two brothers, Donald G. Barker and his wife Linda of Wenham, Mass; Robert R. and his wife Mary of Rowley, Mass; 2 grandchildren, Amanda McGrath and Lilly Teal. Other survivors include his aunt Sylvia of Benton, Ark., uncles Ralph of Jacksonville, Fla. and Russell of Orange, Cal., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 2-4 and 6-8, Jan. 14, at the Lee, Moody and Russell Funeral Home, Beverly, Mass., where his service will be 11 a.m. Jan. 15, with Rev. Ann Abernethy officiating. Arrangements are under the care of the Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
Shotzberger, Patricia
Aug. 14, 1934 - July 26, 2004
Patricia Arlene Meeker Shotzberger, 69, of Bremen, passed away July 26 after a courageous battle with COPD, with her loving husband by her side.
Patricia was born on Aug. 14, 1934 in Glendale, W.Va. the daughter of Waldo Emerson and Helen Angle Meeker. After high school, she got a job with the family dentist, Van K. Heely and worked there until she married Rev. Charles E. Shotzberger on Jan. 22, 1977. They moved to New York and made their home there for a few years. While there, she worked for a dentist in Scarsdale, New York.
They later moved to York where she worked for a dentist in Portsmouth, N.H. and then continued migrating north until they moved to Damariscotta, where Patricia worked for a dentist in Wiscasset. After retiring in 1990, they moved one last time to Bremen.
In 1991, Charles took a position as the clergy for the Bremen Union Church and she assisted him in the ministry until her illness forced her to slow down her activities.
She was a former member of the Bremen Union Church, member of the West Waldoboro Community Church and the Patriotic Club of Bremen.
Pat loved to sing and was part of a quartet in Bremen, enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, and had a love for both life and people.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her loving husband of 27 1/2 years, Rev. Charles Shotzberger; children, Deborah Jean Bowen of Easton, Md., Donna Sue Mays of Virginia Beach, Va., David Russell Bowen of Cicero, N.Y.; step children, Sandra L. Lewis of Old Orchard Beach, Julia A. Dotter of Beacon, N.Y., Thomas C. Shotzberger of Kingston, N.Y.; brother, Richard P. Meeker of Portsmouth, Va.; aunts, Agnes A. Alley, Clifford L.

Clifford L. Alley, 65, of Pemaquid, died on the afternoon of Sept. 28, at Midcoast Hospital, Brunswick. Born in Damariscotta April 21, 1939, he was the son of the Lewis Stanley and Emma (Turner) Alley, Sr. Cliff graduated from South Bristol High School, where he and his family lived.
A fisherman most all of his life, he also had a strong passion for NASCAR. For many winters, he and his partner, Sharon Blanchard enjoyed their home in Daytona Beach and spending summers in Pemaquid. Of late, Cliff had become known as "Lawn Mower Man", by his friends, due to his love for mowing and tractors. He also had taken up painting, in recent years, enjoying both watercolor and oils and was well known for his sense of humor to all.
His parents, as well as his brother, PFC, Lewis Stanley Alley, Jr., in WWII and a sister Esther Chapman, predeceased him.
Cliff leaves his life partner, Sharon, of Pemaquid and Daytona Beach; four daughters, Amelia "Liz" Lindsey of Sanford, Kimberly Alley of Pittston, Britt Alley and her companion Russ Kotow, Jr., of Hallowell, Taylor Alley of Pittston; his sister Elizabeth House of Walpole; and three grandchildren, Rebecca and Jacqueline Giles and Danielle Kotow.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Sat., Oct. 2, at the Chapel of the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta, with Rick Newell officiating. He will be laid to rest, with his parents, at the West Bristol Cemetery, Walpole.

Burley, Helen

Helen Ann Cranston Burley, 89, of Wiscasset, died Oct. 3 at her residence.
She was a native of Rochester, N.Y., where she was a well known designer and antique dealer. She had started her career at the department store Sibley, Lindsey and Curr in the 1940’s and worked independently in the 50’s and 60’s within the Upstate and Western New York area. Because of her use of early American antiques and art in her work and her extensive knowledge of collection, she became one of New York’s better dealers. She was responsible for the formation of the East Bloomfield Antique Show, which began in the early 60’s and is still a major event.
She left Rochester in 1964 to become an innkeeper in Wallingford, Vt. It was in the late 60’s that the well known mid-western home store, Gabborts of Minneapolis, Minn. employed her as one of their top designers. She designed for the former Vice President Hubert Humphrey and many major league baseball players.
Because of her love of New England she moved in 1977 to Chesterfield, N.H. where she was a member of the New England Antiques Dealers Association. She also began a new career and used her intense interest in politics to run and win as a representative for her area in New Hampshire where she served from the late 70’s through the 80’s. In 1990 she moved to Wiscasset and continued as a dealer in antiques.
Helen was known to her many friends for her love of cooking and her extreme devotion to animals, shown not only to her many sheep dogs, shitz su and cats but to her constant support of the Humane Society.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Alfred Burley in 1999.
She is survived by her many loving friends.
Graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Sun., Oct. 10, at Grover Cemetery in Woolwich.

McCarty, Barbara

Barbara Irene (Merriman) McCarty, 72, of Brewer, daughter of Raymond James Merriman and Irene Adelaide (Kilburn) Merriman Keith, died Oct. 1 at her home. She was born April 21, 1932 in Springfield, Vt.
Most of her childhood years she resided in Rye Beach, N.H. She graduated from high school in Portsmouth, N.H. in 1950 and from Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt. in 1952. Following graduation she worked as a research technician at the Cancer Research Institute at Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Mass. She continued as a research technician at the University of California at Los Angeles where she met and married John Edward McCarty on Sept. 3, 1955.
They moved to Lawrence, Kan. in 1956 and had their first child in 1959. Later that year they moved to Mankato, Minn. where her husband began working as a chemistry professor. In 1962 their second child was born. Barbara spent many years making a wonderful, nurturing home and volunteering in the schools and community, as well as studying pottery.
In 1977, she worked as the Assistant Editor for the agricultural publication, “The Land”. She returned to school and received her B.A. in Chemistry from Minnesota State University at Mankato. She was a graduate student and graduate assistant in chemistry, also at MSU, and then taught chemistry at the University of Minnesota at Waseca.
In 1987, John and Barbara sold their home in Mankato and purchased and restored an historic home in Waldoboro, which she named “Blue Skye Farm”. John continued teaching at Unity College in Unity and Barbara and her sister, Jane Philbrick, ran a flower business with extensive gardens. She and Jane did the flowers from design to delivery for many weddings, something they truly enjoyed. In 2000, Blue Skye Farm was sold and Barbara and John moved to Kittery and then for a time lived with her sister, Jane, in Newmarket, N.H. In 2004, at their children’s request, they returned to Maine and purchased a home in Brewer where John continued his love of gardening and Barbara continued painting watercolors.
Barbara was a member of the American Chemical Society; Minnesota Chromatography Forum; Sigma Zeta, Science Honorary; Sigma Delta Epsilon, Graduate Women in Science and the National Honor Society. She also co-authored numerous scientific papers.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 49 years, John McCarty, of Brewer; her daughter and son-in-law Susan and Heinz Sell of Cushing; her son, James McCarty and his companion Tamara Crowley of Glenburn; two granddaughters Erica Engel and Julia Sell of Cushing; sister, Jane Philbrick of Newmarket, N.H.; brothers, Donald Merriman of Virginia Beach, Va. and Kurt Merriman of Springfield, Vt.; numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by her sister Jean (Merriman) Williams.
Visitation from 4- 6 p.m., Fri., Oct. 8 at Hall & Davis Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Thomaston. A remembrance service will be held at 11 a.m., Sat., Oct. 9 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Thomaston.

Albert Stanley Wills, 90, passed away, Oct. 3, at his home in Waldoboro.
Albert was born Jan. 24, 1914 in Oxford, the son of Albert and Addie Pike Wills. He attended school in Oxford. He was employed as a fireman in the woolen mills, Maine Central Railroad and worked as a pipe fitter for B.I.W. and in Loraine, Ohio.
He enjoyed railroading and gardening.
He was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Bridgton.
He was predeceased by his son, Clyde Stanley Wills in 1959; son-in-law, Roger J. Dever, Jr.; grandson, Michael T. Dever; daughter-in-law, Susan Wills, deceased wife of Harold Wills; and great-granddaughter, Miranda Hope Dever
He is survived by his wife, Etta M.
