Loretta “Lori” Stinson, 49, of South Hope, wife of Walter, died unexpectedly on Sept. 28 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
She was born June 1, 1955, a daughter of Howard and Stella Sukeforth, Sr.
She graduated from Camden-Rockport High School in 1973. She worked outside the home for a few years then decided to become the bookkeeper for her husband’s auto body business.
Lori was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother as well as a treasured friend to everyone who knew her.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, family, her gardens and her many friends.
Lori was the rock of life to anyone she knew. One of her favorite things to do was to have one of her famous “cookouts”. Everyone was welcomed by Lori.
She was predeceased by her parents, Howard, Sr. and Stella; brother-in-law Michael Kennard and most recently her nephew Calvin Eggen.
She leaves behind her soul mate of 27 years, Walter; her son, Corey Sukeforth and companion Tonya Wooster of Rockland; daughter, Tiffeny Green and husband Tim of Belmont; son, Tobby and wife Jen of Washington; her three treasured grandchildren Rayven, Dylan and baby Evan; her only brother Howard Sukeforth of Hope; sisters, Cindy Billings and husband Jim of Liberty, Barbara Ludwig and husband Sonny of Union, Regina Kennard of Union, Rhoda Freeman and husband Frank of Belmont, Gwendolyn Braley and husband Karl of Georgia and Ruth Bowman and husband Donald of Washington; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Services will be at the South Hope Community Church at 11 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 9. There will be a gathering at the Stinson’s home in Hope following the service.

Johnson, Dr. Arthur
Unknown - Sept. 18, 2004
A public memorial service for Dr. Arthur M. Johnson, 83, of Southport, will be 2 p.m., Sun., Oct. 24, at the Second Congregational Church, Newcastle.
Dr. Johnson, the past President of the University of Maine, died Sept. 18, at his home in Southport and was laid to rest with his daughter at the Castine Cemetery, Sept. 22.
All arrangements have been entrusted to the Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.

Maguire, Daniel
Aug. 3, 1941 - Oct. 2, 2004
Daniel “Duffy” Maguire, 63, of Whitefield, died suddenly Oct. 2 at his home. He was born in Farmington on Aug. 3, 1941, a son of Edward “Mickey” and Elizabeth Fournier Maguire.
While growing up in Farmington, “Duffy” could be found working at his dad’s variety store, delivering newspapers, skiing at Titcomb Mt. or playing whatever sport was in season. He graduated from Farmington High School in 1959.
After graduating he attended St. Francis Xavier College in Canada for two years, where he was a member of the football team. He transferred to Farmington State Teachers College and left to serve in the U.S. Air Force for four years.
While in the Air Force Duffy married his wife of 40 years Gail Marble in 1964. After serving his country he returned to Farmington State Teachers College graduating in 1968. His first teaching position was at Erskine Academy in South China. He also taught in Benton, Damariscotta, Bristol, Bremen and the last 15 years in Jefferson.
He was a loving husband, caring father, grandfather and dedicated educator.
He was predeceased by his brother, Gregory Maguire in 1995 and a sister Patricia K. Maguire in 1990.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Marble Maguire of Whitefield; sons, Shawn Maguire and his wife Helena of Georgetown, Mass., Brandon Maguire and his wife Rebecca (with child) of Taipei, Taiwan, Riley Maguire of Shanghi, China; his daughter, Mandy T. Maguire of Albany, N.Y.; brothers, Edward T. Maguire, Jr. of Washington State, Barry Maguire and his wife Lynn of Wilton; sister-in-law, Bonnie Maguire of Searsmont; grandchildren, David Daniel Maguire, Olivia Maguire, Connor Maguire and Aidan Maguire and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours Tues., Oct. 5, 7-9 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial celebrated Wed., Oct 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Augusta.

Cummings, Myron
Nov. 25, 1923 - Oct. 5, 2004
Myron C. “Dud” Cummings, 80, of Walpole, died at his home, early on the morning of Oct. 5. The son of Donald and Marjorie (Crockett) Cummings, he was born in Rockland, Nov. 25, 1923.
Attending early schools in Rockland he was graduated from Rockland High, in the Class of 1942. Shortly after he entered the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the Fourth Marine Division in the Pacific during WWII. He served in Iwo Jima, Saipan, Tinian and finally Roi Numor and was discharged in 1945. Myron went on to earn his degree in Applied Embalming and Funeral Service, from the McAllister Institute, in New York. He and his wife, Veronia (Murphy) were married June 2, 1946.
He began his career in funeral service, working for several years at the Russell Funeral Home, in Rockland. In 1953, he came to Damariscotta, where he purchased the Strong Funeral Home, a business he operated for 28 years, earning the respect of the midcoast community he served so faithfully.
Myron was active with many organizations throughout his life, including the Damariscotta-Newcastle Rotary Club, the Alna Lodge of Masons, the V.F.W. and the Wells-Hussey Post American Legion. A lifelong golfer, he held the Wawenock Club championship for five years and had hit two holes-in-one during his golf career. He was a founding Director of the Damariscotta Bank & Trust and worked in that capacity passionately for small businesses throughout the region. For over 35 years, he and several others owned and enjoyed a hunting camp on Narraguagus Lake in northern Maine and as a licensed pilot loved owning and operating his private plane.
Myron leaves his loving wife Veronia, of 58 years, of Walpole; his children, Lynda Estabrook and her husband Glenn of Walpole, Bruce Cummings and his wife Karen of Bristol; and three grandchildren, Jeffrey Lovejoy of Horbach, Germany, Caitlin Cummings and Mitchell Cummings, both of Bristol.
Friends are invited to join the family, 4-6 p.m. Wed., Oct. 6 at the Strong Funeral Home, where his service will be 2 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 7. He will be laid to rest at the West Bristol Cemetery, Walpole.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.

Hart, Julia
Nov. 4, 1923 - Sept. 29, 2004
Julia E. Hart, 80, of Wiscasset, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 29, at her home.
She was born Nov. 4, 1923 in Augusta, a daughter of Maynard H. and Julia E. (Larabee) Gilley, Sr.
Mrs. Hart graduated from Cony High School. She loved helping people and making them smile. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. She was also a very proud ancestor to John Gilley.
Mrs. Hart is survived by a brother, Ralph Gilley; a son, Preston F. Hart of Wiscasset; two daughters, Susan French of Somerville and Constance E. Heilman of Wiscasset; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and many others who adopted her as their “Nan.”
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by two brothers, Maynard H. Gilley, Jr. and Thomas V. Gilley; three sisters, Mary Pinkham Caroline “Kay” Niles and Joanne Dever.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Coast of Maine Cremation & Funeral Service, in Waldoboro.

LaRoza, Henry
June 1, 1948 - Oct. 5, 2004
Henry C. LaRoza, 56, of Nobleboro, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 5, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
He was born June 1, 1948 in Rahway, N.J., a son of the late Henry Clarence and Stella Margaret (Drapala) LaRoza.
Henry earned over ten medals for his participation in the Special Olympics. Winning four Gold medals, three silver, one bronze and many more. He competed in Snow Shoeing, Softball Throw, 100 Meter Run, 100 Meter Walk, 50 Meter Run, and Shot Put. He was also an accomplished horseman earning trophies, medals and ribbons at Flying Changes Therapeutic Center and at the Special Olympics. He was very active in the community and had many friends. He was a member of Mobius Community Center in Damariscotta, the First Baptist Church in Damariscotta, and “Sunbeams” at the First United Methodist Church, Bangor, Penn. Henry was a former employee of King Eider’s Pub in Damariscotta.
He was noted for his writing and always wanted to be an author and write about his life and experiences. Henry always had a smile and he was very dear to all who knew him. His life was very full and rich. We have all been blessed to have him for a friend. His presence will be missed. God bless him. Henry had a kind and generous heart and was an inspiration to many. He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Henry is survived by a sister, Carol Andrews and her husband Ronald of Damariscotta; a brother, Richard LaRoza and his wife Diane of Bangor, Penn.; his long time home care provider, Jean Winslow of Nobleboro; special friends, Paul, Laura, Alice and Nate and the Mobius Staff; five nieces and seven nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Fri., Oct. 8, at Mobius Community Center, Business Rt. 1, Damariscotta.
Interment will be in the St. Stanislas Cemetery, in Easthampton, Mass.

Johnson, Lillie
Nov. 18, 1925 - Oct. 4, 2004
Lillie L. Johnson, 78, of Saco, died at her daughter’s home in Londonderry, N.H., on the morning of Oct. 4. The daughter of Lafe L. and Sylvia (Tibbetts) Lessner, she was born in Damariscotta, Nov. 18, 1925.
Growing up in Damariscotta, Lillie graduated from Lincoln Academy, Newcastle, in the Class of 1943. In 1945, she and her husband, Carleton F. Johnson were married. During her husband’s career in construction, they lived in several states before moving to Plaistow, N.H. where she lived until 1994.
She later married Walter Wood, where they resided in Belfast for several years. She collected both porcelain and antique dolls, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 40 years.
She is survived by four children, Richard Johnson of Kingston, N.H., Sharon Pike of Nobleboro, Sandra Danley of Dayton, and Deborah LaVallee of Londondery, N.H.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held at the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta on Fri., Oct. 8 from 2-5 p.m. Graveside service will be held at the Hillside Cemetery in Damariscotta, on Sat., Oct. 9 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Plumer, Claire
March 8, 1917 - Nov. 2, 2004
Claire Miller Plumer, 87, died Nov. 2 in Damariscotta. She was the widow of Paul S. Plumer, former general manager of the Kennebec Journal and a vice president of Guy Gannett Publishing Co., Portland.
Claire was born in Augusta March 8, 1917, the daughter of Archie C. Miller and Hildra W. Gilley Miller. She graduated from Hallowell High School and Gates Business College. In addition to teaching dance in area schools, Claire excelled in sports and won the Sportsman’s Rendezvous Award for her performance in athletics. In 1935, she became Miss Maine and was runner-up in the North American beauty contest that followed.
A lifelong naturalist and outdoorswoman, Claire traveled extensively the back woods and waters of Maine, learning to identify the state’s flora and fauna. She studied Maine’s geology and collected numerous gems and minerals. She was awarded a scholarship to the Maine Audubon Camp in 1950 and shared her extensive knowledge with groups and individuals throughout her life. She worked with members of the National Audubon Society in the early days of the bald eagle recovery program and with others in identifying other endangered species. She was president of the Augusta Chapter of the National Audubon Society and one of the organizers of the Maine Archaeology Association.
A volunteer in organizing and cataloguing early collections for historic Fort Western, she was a charter member of the Augusta Players and a member of the Kennebec Valley Garden Club, Augusta Nature Club and Josselyn Botanical Society. She studied art with private instructors and painted in oils for 20 years. She was a charter member of Kennebec Valley Art Association. Claire’s heroines in life were golfer Babe Dedrickson; pilot Amelia Earhart; and naturalist and author Rachel Carson.
As a young family, the Plumers resided in Augusta, Hallowell and Pittston. In later years, Claire designed and had homes built on Sanibel Island, Fla., in Belgrade Lakes and at Indian Point in Georgetown. Prior to her residence at Chase Point in Damariscotta, she lived in Walpole.
She is survived by three sons, Paul S. Plumer, Jr. and his wife, Mary, Stephen H. Plumer and Timothy C. Plumer and his wife, Olga, all of Hallowell; a sister, Eleanor Aldrich Tibbetts, San Jose, Cal.; nine grandchildren, William and Ramona Birmingham of Melbourne, Fla., Allison Plumer of Citrus Heights, Cal., Peter Plumer of Nashville, Tenn., Timothy C. Plumer II of Gorham, Sarah Plumer of New York City, N.Y., Nicholas Plumer of Greenville, S.C., and Daniel Plumer of Telluride, Col.; and several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
At her request, there will be no services. Interment will be at the Plumer family lot in Union Cemetery.

Wright, Calvin D.
April 24, 1951 - Nov. 8, 2004
Calvin D. Wright, 53, of Bristol, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Nov. 8. Born in Damariscotta on April 24, 1951, he was the son of Earl and Dorothy (Gamage) Wright.
Calvin graduated from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle, and shortly after graduating, went to work as an electrician for Bath Iron Works. In 1975 he entered the United States Navy where he served for four years. Upon leaving the Navy, he went back to work for Bath Iron Works where he remained for about 20 years.
Calvin was a wonderful man who enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He never strayed far from the ocean and enjoyed racing both cars and boats. After leaving BIW, he continued his hobby of working on cars which fulfilled his passion for automobiles.
He was predeceased by one brother, Warren Earl Wright.
He is survived by his parents of South Bristol; his wife of nine years, Melanie McLellan of Bristol and Boothbay; two daughters, Kerry Surette of Augusta, and Rachelle Wright of Bath; five siblings, Phyllis Cotton of South Portland, Phillip Wright of Newcastle, Lorraine Tanguay of Albany Township, Norman Wright of South Bristol and Julie Kaplinger of South Bristol; five grandchildren, Taylor, Brendan, Calleigh, Siobahn and Cameron Surette; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Fri., Nov. 12 from 6-8 p.m. at the Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center. A funeral will be held on Sat., Nov. 13 at the Union Congregational Church in South Bristol at 10 a.m.

Burnham, Louise
Oct. 15, 1911 - Nov. 9, 2004
Louise B. Rice Burnham, 93, of East Boothbay, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 9.
She was born Oct. 15, 1911 in Bristol, a daughter of Parker and Maude (Robinson) Rice.
She attended school in South Bristol, and on Dec. 31, 1931 married Lester Burnham. Mrs. Burnham was a member of the East Boothbay United Methodist Church and Pocohontis. She dedicated her life to raising her children as a loving homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of more than 24 years who died in 1955; four sisters; and one brother.
Mrs. Burnham is survived by five sons, Parker Burnham and his wife Phyllis of Dallas, N.C., Sheldon Burnham and his wife Freda of East Boothbay, Douglas Burnham and his wife Doris of Boothbay, Cecil Burnham of South Bristol, and Stanley Burnham and his wife Toni of Dallas, N.C.; two daughters, Beverly Burnham of Rockland, and Maude Winchenbach and her husband Gerald of Rockland; five brothers, Mervin Rice of South Bristol, Walter Rice and wife Audrey of Bristol, Merril Rice of Bristol, William Rice and his wife Gertrude of Damariscotta, and Wilder Rice and his wife Marguerite of Nobleboro; sister, Amy Poole of Edgecomb; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 27 at the East Boothbay United Methodist Church.

Elwell, Alda
April 3, 1919 - Nov. 10, 2004
Alda F. Elwell, 85, of Newcastle, entered into rest on the evening of Nov. 10, at Cove’s Edge, Damariscotta. The daughter of William C. and Ruth I. (Genthner) French, she was born April 3, 1919, in Nobleboro. Alda graduated, with honors, from Lincoln Academy in the Class of 1936 and faithfully attended every Alumni Banquet until 2001.
For most of her career, she worked as a domestic in the region, including the office of Drs. Frank Avantaggio and Ralph Powell and the office of Don Stewart. For the longest period of time, Alda was the Sexton at St. Andrew’s Church, on Glidden St., where she was also a lifelong member. Her children smiled warmly, as they explained she was well known in the Miles Memorial Hospital community, where she gave birth to eight of her twelve children. She had a lifelong love for cats and kept a personal journal of her thoughts and life from her teen years.
Alda was predeceased by her husband Kenneth, in 1992, as well as three children, Jeffrey, Janice and Jean.
Alda leaves nine children, Judy Collamore of Lakeland, Fla., Julie Groves of Key West, Fla., James A. Elwell of Madison, Jerry Elwell of Bristol, Joanne Anastos of Binghamton, N.Y., Jerel Elwell of Damariscotta, Joan Cunningham of Bath, Joy Black of Damariscotta and Jodie Clark of Newcastle; her sister, Eileen D. Gould of Nobleboro; 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours were Nov. 15, from 12-2 p.m., with a service to celebrate her life, at 2 p.m., all at the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. She was laid to rest at the Dunbar Cemetery, Nobleboro.

Coombs, Beulah
July 24, 1904 - Dec. 2, 2004
Beulah Coombs, 100, of Damariscotta, formerly of Rockland, died Dec. 2 at Cove’s Edge Nursing Center where she had lived for several years and was cared for and loved by a team of wonderful, caring people. Born in Steuben, July 24, 1904, Beulah was the eldest of eight children of Eugene and Flossie Follett Pinkham. She graduated from Steuben high school, class of 1923.
Moving to Rockland in the 1940s, Beulah worked as a housekeeper for many local families. She resided in Rockland until the 1990s. She enjoyed reading.
Beulah was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Brann in 1978 and a granddaughter, Lorna Brann in 1985.
She is survived by a son, Colon Haskell and his wife Delvine of Milbridge; a daughter, Patricia Johnston and her husband Wayne of Nobleboro; a sister, Lorna Gay of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Bonnie Crosby, Kathy Young, Fred Haskell, James Haskell all of Milbridge, Lisa Dailey of Windsor, David Dailey of South Thomaston, and Stephen Brann of California; five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
Private family interment will be held at Milbridge Evergreen Cemetery, Milbridge. The Reverend Joyce Ingrisano will officiate.

Orff, Edith W.
May 10, 1905 - Dec. 5, 2004
Edith White Orff, 99, of Waldoboro, died Dec. 5 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. She was born May 10, 1905 in Jonesboro, a daughter of Calmon and Mary Davis White. She grew up in Jonesboro and attended local schools. Her parents sent her to work at the VA Hospital at the age of 16. She also worked at AMHI in Augusta. She moved to North Waldoboro with her husband, Ruel Orff, in 1923.
She worked for Port Clyde Packing Company for many years retiring at the age of 75. She was a member of the Waldoboro First Baptist Church. Edith was a direct descendent of the first baby born on the Mayflower, Peregrine White. Edith made mittens for her family and for the public schools for many years. Edith was known as “Gram” to many of the neighborhood kids in North Waldoboro. She enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling all over the world.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ruel Orff; daughters, Elaine Orff and Mary Bowman; sons, Kenneth Orff and Richard Orff.
She is survived by six daughters, Leona Esancy of Thorndike, Charlotte Noyes of Waldoboro, Rayetta Simmons and her husband Neil of Waldoboro, Pat Cross and her husband Francis of Waldoboro, Judy Westman and her husband Ron of Garland,
Darlene Hale and her husband Tom of Washington; two sons, Linwood Orff of Branford, Conn., Arvine Orff and his wife Elsie of Branford, Conn.; sister, Marion Graichen of Farmingdale; cousins, Ruth Wood and Natalie Smith both of Jonesboro; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thurs., Dec. 9 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A celebration of Edith’s life will be held 7 p.m. Fri., Dec. 10 at the North Waldoboro Nazarene Church with Pastor Mark Holden officiating. Burial will be in the Shuman Cemetery in Waldoboro on Sat., Dec. 11.

Thompson, Katharine
Aug. 7, 1942 - Jan. 9, 2005
Katharine Vansant Thompson, of Sheepscot, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 9 after a valiant battle against breast cancer. Known lovingly to all as Katie, she died surrounded by her family with the support of countless others whose lives were touched by her friendship.
Katie was born on Aug. 7, 1942, to John and Marion Vansant, who resided in Huntingdon Valley, Penn. Throughout her childhood, Katie enjoyed sailing with her family on Long Island Sound and became a skilled and passionate sailor. Her life-long love of sailing took her from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the Mediterranean to the Caribbean.
Her education at Abington Friends School taught Katie to uphold the values of peace and world outreach espoused by the Quakers. In 1958, she was selected to represent her school as an exchange student in Selestat, France. She went on to graduate in 1964 from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., earning a Bachelor’s Degree in French.
In 1965, Katie married Ranald Hobbs. They lived together in Washington, D.C. and later in Baltimore, Md. with their two children, Karen and Christopher. After separating from Ranald, Katie eventually relocated to Wiscasset as a single mother. She worked at the law office of David Soule and enhanced her creative side with macramé artistry and craft projects, hereby establishing herself in the arts and crafts community.
Katie was introduced to William M. Thompson, an architect practicing in Princeton, N.J., who joined her in Maine when they married in 1975.They lived together in Wiscasset prior to moving to Sheepscot, where they have lived for the past 18 years with their two daughters, Cammie and Gillian.
In 1981, Katie spent a year with her family in Scotland, where she became inspired by innovative approaches to education.Her convictions about early childhood education and her amazing love of children culminated in the founding of the Sheepscot Valley Children’s House, an alternative pre-school in Wiscasset, where she acted as director until 1992. Her boundless enthusiasm and creativity are still apparent in the spirit that remains the cornerstone of the school today.
Leaving her position as director of the school enabled Katie to focus her energies elsewhere. She was dynamically involved in her community, serving as a member of various organizations, including Lincoln County Historical Association, the Female Charitable Society, the Wiscasset Planning Board, and the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association.
Katie was also a devoted and active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, where she assisted as Reader, Chalice Bearer, and Lay Eucharistic Minister. She helped initiate the hand bell choir, and participated in the recent Christmas Eve bell-ringing performance.
Katie’s radiant smile was contagious, and her caring manner nurtured many friendships over the years. By all who knew her, Katie will be remembered for her creative generosity, her adventurous spirit, and her passion for life. She lived a full life and lived it abundantly.
Katie is predeceased by her father, John S. Vansant, and an infant son, William Thompson.
She is survived by William M. Thompson, her husband of 29 years; a son Christopher Hobbs (Chris) of Bradenton, Fla.; three daughters, Karen F. Paul of Atlanta, Ga., Katharine M. Thompson (Gillian) of Golden, Col., and Joanna C. Thompson (Cammie) of Boston, Mass.; her mother Marion Fisher Vansant of Damariscotta and a sister, Susan Vansant Bartz of Santa Barbara, Cal.
Memorial service 11 a.m., Sat., Jan. 15 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Newcastle.
Arrangements under the direction of Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service, Waldoboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Katie’s name may be made to the Sheepscot Valley Children’s House, c/o Ethel Stansfield, P.O. Box 449, Wiscasset, ME 04578, or the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association, 624 Sheepscot Rd., Newcastle, ME 04553.

Stover, John R.
Apr. 16, 1931 - Jan. 18, 2005
John R. Stover, 73, of Jefferson, died on Jan. 18 at his daughter’s home in Georgetown, after trying to overcome the irreversible effects and complications of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was attended in his final days by his daughter Candice, with the support of her sisters and the wonderful services of CHANS Home Health and Hospice of Brunswick.
Jack was the youngest son of Eugene C., Sr. and Margaret E. ( Mullaney ) Stover. Born April 16, 1931 in Bath, he spent his earliest years in the shadow of Fort Popham while his father was assigned to the US Coast Guard station there. The family moved to West Southport where he began his school days. He joined his brothers in the marching band of Boothbay Region High and graduated with the class of 1948.
The sea water ran through his veins and in answer to that he joined the US Navy shortly after high school. His basic training in Great Lakes was just the beginning of his Naval career that spanned three decades and every continent on the globe. He had Mediterranean tour duties and several assignments with the Marine Corps in Camp Lejeune, N.C. In the early sixties he shipped out as a medical corpsman from Boston, Mass. aboard the USS Edisto on an assignment that took him down the East Coast, through the Panama Canal and to many ports of call on the western coast of South America. He also served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was stationed in Orlando, Fla. and was part of the commissioning of the Naval Training Center there. After his final assignment at Camp Lejeune, he concluded his career as a Sr. Chief Petty Officer at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla. in 1978. He returned to school to qualify for his second career as an X-ray technician in the Orlando area.
John recently received his fifty-year recognition for his membership in the Grand Lodge of Maine. He was a member of the Seaside Lodge of East Boothbay as well as the Riverside Lodge of Jefferson. He enjoyed attending the weekly cribbage games in Jefferson.
Surviving Jack are his three daughters: Candice Dorman and her children Devin and Jonathan of Greenville, S.C.; Robin Anderson, her husband Doug and their children Darcy and Ian of Tenants Harbor; and Katherine Vaillancourt, her husband Michael of Georgetown and their children Melissa Lindley and her husband Max of Bath, Ashley and Katie Vaillancourt of Georgetown; great granddaughter, Ella Reid Lindley of Bath; brothers and their families, Eugene, JR. and his wife Ethel of Wiscasset, and Joe and his wife Peggy of Boothbay Harbor; and many nieces and nephews.
Jack was predeceased by his son, Marc Allen and two step-grandchildren, Kevin and Donald Vaillancourt.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed in his name to CHANS Home Health Care, 50 Baribeau Dr., Brunswick, ME 04011.
Visiting hours, 6-8 p.m., Sat., Jan. 22 at the Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. Funeral service, 3 p.m., Sun., Jan. 23 at the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church with the Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiating. Burial 11 a.m., Mon., Jan. 24 at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
