Donnell, Ruey

Ruey Ella Hallowell Donnell, 85, of Nobleboro, died the evening of Feb. 6 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta.
She was born Feb. 22, 1919 in Jefferson, a daughter of Bernard and Laura (Cooper) Hallowell.
Ruey attended school in Washington. On Oct. 5, 1943 she married Walter H. Donnell in Newcastle. Over the years she worked at the Lincoln Home in Newcastle and the Medomak Canning Factory in Waldoboro. For many years she, along with her husband, operated the family hen farm in Nobleboro. She continued to run the farm by herself following her husband’s death in 1966. Ruey was a member of the North Nobleboro Baptist Church. She enjoyed knitting, cooking, dancing and caring for her family.
Ruey is survived by a son, Roger W. Donnell of Carmel; a daughter, Maxine D. Lane and her husband Lawrence E. of Nobleboro; two step-daughters Lois Vannah of Waldoboro and Helen Pietila of Nobleboro; four grandsons, Lawrence Lane, Jr. and his wife Myra of Nobleboro, Tony Donnell and his wife Basma of Ocean Springs, Miss., Paul Donnell and his wife Jessica of Tinker A.F.B., Oklahoma, and David Donnell and his wife Nadine of Charleston, S.C.; granddaughter, Lisa Legere and her husband Randy of Lewiston; 14 step-grandchildren, Harold Moody of Nobleboro, Norma Dion of Nobleboro, Sandy Webster of Waldoboro, Pat Russell of San Augustine, Tex., Pam Glidden of Sand Springs, Okla., Jackie Blanchette of Waldoboro, Jeff Donnell of Houston, Tex., Debra Levensaler of Nobleboro, Robert Spear of Nobleboro, Ronald Spear of Nobleboro, Richard Spear of Nobleboro, Susan Butler of Waldoboro, Sally Fogleman of Port Charolette, Fla., and Carol Jones of Nobleboro; two sisters-in-law, Etta Hallowell of Nobleboro and Thelma Hallowell of Augusta; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of more than 23 years; three brothers, Chauncey Hallowell, Bernard Hallowell, Jr., and Elijah Hallowell; two sisters, Vi Jones and Gladys Henry; a step-son, Chester Donnell; and three step-daughters Thelma Moody, Edna Spear, and Marie Ashworth.
A graveside service will be announced in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service, Waldoboro. Interment
will be in the Dunbar Cemetery, Nobleboro.

Purney, Eleanor F.
Oct. 19, 1910 - Jan. 30, 2005
Eleanor F. Purney, 94, of Nobleboro, died after a brief illness on Jan. 30 at Fieldcrest Nursing Home, Waldoboro. Born on Oct. 19, 1910, she was the daughter of Frank Newhall and Ethel (Kelly) Newhall of Lynnfield, Mass.
Eleanor was a graduate of Medford High School Class of 1928. In 1938, she was married to Roger John Purney and they celebrated 51 years together before his death in 1989.
Eleanor was employed as a food broker for Ferguson-Bedell, a Massachusetts food distributor, where she worked for 35 years. After retirement she and her husband Roger moved to Nobleboro where Eleanor lived for the past 25 years. She never regretted moving from her home in Weston, Mass. to Nobleboro because she met many new, wonderful friends and neighbors. Eleanor particularly enjoyed being part of the Craft Group at Applefest. She was also a charter member of the Nobleboro Historical Society. Devoted to her family and friends, Eleanor made sure everyone received special attention. She took great delight in the Christmas holidays and she was noted for her cookies and pies (especially lemon meringue), which she shared with anyone who came through the door. She was the center of family gatherings and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
She was predeceased by her brother, Albert F. Newhall; and nephews, Donald Newhall, Robert Newhall and Larry Newhall.
She is survived by her niece Audrey Galpin, and nephew Norman Newhall. She was the great aunt of three nieces and two nephews, and great-great aunt of five nieces and two nephews.
Graveside services will be held at the Dunbar Cemetery, Nobleboro, in the spring, at a date and time to be announced.

Theriault, Arthur R.
July 7, 1927 - Feb. 18, 2005
Arthur Richard Theriault, 77, of Waldoboro, passed away Feb. 18 at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro after a brief illness.
Arthur was born July 7, 1927, a son of Amos and Bernice Guimond Theriault, and was a 1945 graduate of Waldoboro High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Argonne, and was a stationed in Japan after its surrender.
In 1947 Arthur married Maxine Wallace and returned to Waldoboro, where he worked at several local stores in town.
In 1952 they moved to Medford, Mass. where he was employed by Harmony Supply for ten years. He then worked for many years as a milkman for Gilman’s Dairy in North Reading.
Arthur was employed by Flatly Company Engineering and Construction, in New Hampshire, where he helped to build a large plaza in Boca Raton, Fla. for three and a half years. He later moved to Nashua, N.H., where he was employed by the maintenance department of St. Joseph’s Hospital until his retirement in 1990. He returned to Waldoboro in 1997.
He enjoyed sports, history and talking politics.
He is predeceased by his wife, Maxine Wallace Theriault.
Survivors include his son, Richard Theriault of Rockford, Ill.; brother, Raymond Theriault of Waldoboro; grandson, Scott Theriault of Rockford, Ill.; granddaughters, Kerry Theriault of Northport, Fla., and Jennifer Brown of Attleboro, Mass.; and five great-grandchildren.
A committal service will be held in the spring at the Back Cove Cemetery in Waldoboro; a date and time will be announced at a later date.

Weston, Joan E.
June 21, 1917 - Feb. 25, 2005
Joan Elizabeth Weston, 87, of Bremen, passed away on Feb. 25, at her home in Bremen.
She was born June 21, 1917 in Waldoboro, the daughter of Victor V. Burnheimer, Sr. and Sarah Groton Burnheimer. She graduated from Kents Hill at age 13, and from Bates College. Later she attended Duke University. She left teaching to run her father’s business, Burnheimer’s Grain, with her brother Victor.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Waldoboro Women’s Club, and many other local organizations. Joan was a life long learner, avid reader and bridge player. She loved being with her husband of 62 years, Phil Weston, who died in 2003. They enjoyed traveling, boating and gardening together. Joan was a wonderful and loving mother and wife and will be missed by her friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Anne Seifert and her husband, Sigbert of Bremen, and by her brother, Victor V. Burnheimer, Jr. of Waldoboro.
Graveside service will be held in the spring at the German Protestant Cemetery in Waldoboro, to be announced.

Tibbetts, Richard
Aug. 8, 1928 - April 10, 2005
Richard Burton Tibbetts, 76, died April 10, at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.
Dick was born Aug. 8, 1928 in Boothbay Harbor, son of Raymond and Marion Tibbetts. He grew up in Boothbay and graduated from the Boothbay Region High School.
From 1947 to 1993 Dick worked as a Yacht Captain, and skippered the Balmy Days for several years. He worked in Maritime Industries and was the Harbor Pilot at Port Everglades, making 51 trips from Maine to Florida. He worked lobstering for a couple of years. In addition to his love for the ocean, Dick enjoyed the outdoors and taking trips in his R.V. He enjoyed building houses and was a skilled carpenter. He loved his home in West Boothbay Harbor.
Dick is survived by his wife of nine years, Marilyn L. Tibbetts of West Boothbay Harbor; his daughters, Linda Layton of Matthews, N.C., and Terri Marcello of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; his sons, Mike and Mark Tibbetts of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; his step-sons, Richard Tracy Batteese of Freeport, and Gregory Batteese of Brunswick; his step-daughter, C. Lynn Vajda of Windham and 15 grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held Wed., April 13 6-8 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington, & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
A funeral service will be held Thurs., April 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor. Rev. Sarah Foulger will officiate.

Peters-Rowe, Janet
March 29, 1928 - April 18, 2002
Janet M. Peters-Rowe, 74, of Brunswick, passed away April 18 at Mid-Coast Hospital.
Born in Bangor, March 29, 1928, to Carlton and Isabelle Lewis Hughes, she moved to Wiscasset in her early teens and was raised by her maternal aunt and uncle, Priscilla and Harold Campbell.
She attended and graduated from Wiscasset Schools. She married Conrad H. Peters in 1947. She was later married to the late Carl Rowe.
Living in Wiscasset, Janet and Conrad raised their four children and cared for each of Janet’s parents and Conrad’s maternal grandparents as their health declined.
Janet and Conrad followed the Lewis family tradition of providing small-town market services with their ownership and management of the J&P Market in Wiscasset for 18 years.
Following the sale of the family business and working in local Wiscasset businesses, Janet struggled with her personal demons and was the able to devote her life to helping fellow alcoholics and other people for whom life proved too challenging and has lost their way.
She devoted the remainder of her life to her family and to helping others learn to help themselves. She served as a substance abuse counselor at Merrymeeting House in Bowdoinham, Choice Skywood in Camden, and Rockland, and at Community Alcoholism Services in Portland.
Following her retirement as a substance counselor, she continued her service to others in the community of recovering alcoholics.
In addition, Janet’s compassion for the men, women, and children with AIDS led her to devote many hours as a volunteer for the Merrymeeting Aids Project in Brunswick.
She is survived by two sons, James A. Peters, Hooksett, N.H., and Clyson L. Peters, Thomaston; two daughters, Edith M. Kelby, Brunswick and Nancy L. Peters, Waterboro; a brother, Murtaugh “Sonny” Hughes, Richmond; a sister, Ellen Hughes Goodwin, Ft. Pierce, Fla.; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; Leigh Campbell of Wiscasset, and Terry Campbell of Winthrop; and her extended family and many close friends in Maine’s community of recovering alcoholics.
Memorial service 1 p.m. Sun., April 28, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Pleasant St., Brunswick.

Stiles, Roger
June 30, 1918 - April 5, 2002
Roger Everett Stiles, Sr., 83, of Hallowell, died on April 5 at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.
He was born in Boothbay Harbor, June 30, 1918, the son of Luther and Helen (Marney) Stiles.
Roger was educated in Canadian schools. A longtime resident of Hallowell, he married Shirley Fuller, who predeceased him in 1990.
Roger served in the Merchant Marines during W.W. II, and was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard. He was employed by Central Maine Power Co. for more than 30 years until his retirement.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge #5 and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Hallowell.
Roger was also predeceased by his brother, Cortland Stiles, and his two sisters, Agnes Ewseychik and Doreen Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine (Shepherd) Stiles, of Hallowell; his two sons, Roger E. Stiles, Jr., and his wife, Dawn, of Augusta, and Peter Stiles of Boca Grande, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services 10 a.m. Mon., May 20 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Hallowell with Rev. Nancy Platt officiating.
Relatives and friends are welcome for a time of refreshments and fellowship at the parish hall following the service.

Sidelinger, Charlotte
March 10, 1922 - Oct. 17, 2005
Charlotte L. Sidelinger, 83, of Dresden, passed away on Oct. 17 at MaineGeneral Medical Center- Thayer Unit, in Waterville, with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Albany, N.Y., on March 10, 1922, a daughter of Ralph and Ruth (White) Sturtevant.
She was a 1940 graduate of Amherst High School and had attended the University of Massachusetts.
On June 20, 1943 she married George G. Sidelinger in Wollaston, Mass., and they moved to Dresden on June 20, 1950. She retired from the State of Maine, Bureau of Taxation, in 1986 and for many years ran a used bookstore at her home called The Book Barn.
Charlotte liked rides to the ocean, reading, doing crossword puzzles and watching Boston Red Sox and Patriot games. She especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents, her twin brother Paul Sturtevant in 1987 and her sister Ruth Sturtevant in 1999.
She is survived by her husband George of 63 years; son Ken Sidelinger and fiancée Vicky Mastantuono of Armada, Mich.; daughter Jean Genthner and husband Ted of Waldoboro; son Peter Sidelinger and wife Mary of Webster, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two cousins.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Kennebec County Urology, Kennebec Dialysis Center, Augusta, MGMC, Augusta Unit, Timothy Hendrickson, and Dr. Charles Jacobs for the wonderful care of Charlotte.
At her request there will be no funeral service. Celebration of her life will be held in the spring.

Stallfort, Ruth
Nov. 9, 1921 - Aug. 25, 2005
Ruth Oliver Stallfort, 83, of Round Pond, a professor, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, died on Aug. 25 after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Boston, Mass., on Nov. 9, 1921, she was the daughter of Albert and Cathering (Igoe) Oliver.
After graduating from Girls Latin School, Mrs. Stallfort attended Simmons College, where she earned a B.S. in Biology and a M.S.S. from the School of Social Work. She subsequently pursued advanced study at Columbia University School of Social Work, where she earned a U.S.P.H. Fellowship, and the Medical College of Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Stallfort began her professional career as a Psychiatric Social Worker at Judge Baker Guidance Center in Boston, where she worked from 1946-1948.
She subsequently moved to the Philadelphia area, where she joined the staff at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1954, Mrs. Stallfort joined the faculty of Bryn Mawr College’s Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research as a lecturer in Psychiatric Social Work. She remained at Bryn Mawr for 30 years, retiring in September of 1984 as Associate Professor Emeritus.
In Philadelphia, Mrs. Stallfort met and married her husband, G. Robert Stallfort (Bob). As newlyweds, the couple lived in Bryn Mawr, but later moved to Nantmeal and finally, Elverson, Penn., where they lived for over 30 years. In 1993, the couple moved to Round Pond, retiring to an area that they had loved for many years.
Mrs. Stallfort was an avid reader and also enjoyed travel, embarking on trips to France, Greece, Germany, and Thailand in the past 10 years. In addition, she was an active volunteer. She worked at the Skidompha Used Book Store in Damariscotta, and was a driver for the elderly and infirm. A lifelong
Democrat, she also actively helped local candidates in their campaign efforts.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bob, a brother Karl Oliver, and sisters Helen Richardson and Marie Colella.
Mrs. Stallfort is survived by her daughter Katherine E. Stallfort and husband Frazier Caner; grandchildren Oliver and Hannah Caner, all of Wilton,
Conn.; and many nieces and nephews in the Boston area.

Tan, Marion
Sept. 14, 1935 - Oct. 18, 2005
Marion Elizabeth Tan, 70, passed away Oct. 18 at her home in Waldoboro.
Marion was born Sept. 14, 1935 in Belfast, Ireland, a daughter of Joseph and Mae Short Mallon. She met Anthony Tan when they were both 19, while he was stationed in England, and they were married in 1956; he said, “it was love at first sight”.
Together they traveled all over the world while he was in the Air Force and they retired to Pennsylvania for 13 years before taking a camping trip to Acadia National Park and deciding to retire to Waldoboro in 1986.
She was a certified belly dancer, enjoyed all crafting and found great pleasure in her nine rock gardens around her home.
Marion volunteered at Goodwill in Rockland. She loved her black lab, Shadow, and her cats, Mitzy and Daisy.
Marion enjoyed spending time with her family and her daughter said, “She was the best wife and mother, ever”. Each year she and her entire family would travel to Sea Isle, N.J., for a family reunion, which she enjoyed immensely.
She is predeceased by her sister, Rona Kissner.
Marion is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Anthony Tan of Waldoboro; daughters Michelle Tan of Waldoboro, Heather Tan-Naghshineh and husband Billy of Virginia; son Anthony Brian Tan and his wife Michele of Philadelphia; sister Brenda Mallon of England; and brothers Fred and Brian Mallon of Manchester, England.

Hanna, James
Nov. 4, 1913 - Oct. 20, 2005
James “Stan” Hanna, 91, of Waldoboro, passed away Oct. 20 at his home.
James was born Nov. 4, 1913 in Waldoboro, the son of James M. and Ethel Sherman Hanna.
He grew up in Waldoboro graduating from Waldoboro High School and continuing his education at the Wentworth Institute of Boston.
He served in the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer in the South Pacific during WWII. He played baseball after WWII for numerous local town teams. He worked locally as a machinist for Sylvania Electric, Bath Iron Works and Master’s Machine Shop.
He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He was a member of the Lincoln Rifle Association and the National Rifle Association.
He was predeceased by sisters, Priscilla Straughn and Carolyn Brightman; first wife Nancy Hanna; second wife, Gwendolyn Hanna; and step-sons, Stephen and Franklin Prior
Survivors include his daughter, Lorraine Hussey and husband Roy of South Portland; nephews, Brian Brightman of Dighton, Mass., and Geoffrey Straughn of Roanoke, Va.; step-daughters, Tracy Crowell and husband Gilbert of Jefferson, and Diane Drinkwater and husband Alan of Owls Head; and step-son, Craig Prior and wife Cindy of Bremen.

Bartolotta, Terry
Dec. 26, 1948 - Oct. 19, 2005
Terry L. Bartolotta, 56, Bremen, passed away peacefully in her home with her husband and son by her side, on the afternoon of Oct. 19 after a long courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Born Dec. 26, 1948, in Bay Shore, Long Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of Tracey Ketcham and (the late) Alice Southland Ketcham.
Raised on Long Island, Terry graduated from West Babylon High in 1967. She married Salvatore C. Bartolotta, Sr., Dec. 1, 1968 and was blessed with her son Salvatore in May of 1970. She and her family relocated to Maine in the summer of 1988 and settled in Bremen where she began working for the Bremen Town Office for the next ten years. Shortly after, she accepted a position in the Damariscotta Town Office where she worked for five years until forced to retire as a result of her illness. In her spare time Terry enjoyed creating special craft items for her family & friends, collecting Boyd's Bears and spoiling her two beautiful granddaughters.
Her sister Brenda Michelback predeceased her.
Terry leaves her father, Tracey of Oakdale, N.Y.; her husband, of Bremen; her son Salvatore C. Bartolotta, Jr. and wife Rebecca, of Bremen; her sister, Patricia Bennett of Oakdale; two granddaughters, Taylor and Shayna Bartolotta; and three nephews, Brian and Kevin Bennett and Richard Michelback.
