Henny DeMeyer
Henny DeMeyer of Rhinelander died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Saint Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander. She was 78.
Mrs. DeMeyer was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Germany, the daughter of Gustav and Elise (Bruhn) Remus. She moved to Rhinelander in 1924, graduating from Rhinelander High School in 1943.
She married Richard DeMeyer Jan. 1, 1949, in Rhinelander. She was well known for her wedding cakes and playing the organ.
Mrs. DeMeyer was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Jamie Drews.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Richard (Chris) of Harrison; four daughters, Christine Hess, Deborah DeMeyer and Dawn (Ronald) Drews, all of Rhinelander and JoAnn (John) Modjewski of Eagle River; three sisters, Irma (Edward) Langlois, Selma (Wallace) Sommers and Katherine (Don) Pecor, all of Rhinelander; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 11 at Hildebrand-Darton-Russ Funeral Home in Rhinelander. The Rev. Jeff Shearier officiated. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

Helen Pankow
Helen Pankow (nee Herder) of Eagle River died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. She was 79.
Mrs. Pankow was born Jan. 20, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio. She retired from John Oster Co. of Milwaukee after more than 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward E., in 1986.
Formerly of Milwaukee, she resided in Eagle River since 1986. She was an active member of SERVE and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Eagle River.
Survivors include two sons, Allen R. (Elaine) of Milwaukee and Paul (Kathy) of Hubertus; two brothers, Edward (Estelle) Herder and Carl Herder, both of Milwaukee; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 9-11:30 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Eagle River. A funeral service will follow. The Rev. Margaret Johnson will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Neurofibromatosis Foundation.

Nancy J. Peters
Nancy J. Peters of Eagle River died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Eagle River Memorial Hospital. She was 68.
Mrs. Peters was born Feb. 6, 1933, in Phelps, the daughter of Elmer Wilson. She was a lifelong resident of the North Woods area and enjoyed painting with oils and acrylics.
Survivors include her father; two sons, Richard (Mary) of Eagle River, and Carl “Tuner” (Connie) of Spooner; three daughters, Jacky (Mike) Houdek of Manton, Calif., Clara (Curtis) Hennes and Dawn (Don) Couey, both of Eagle River; and two brothers, Tom (Carol) Wilson and Don (Jewel) Wilson, both of Phelps; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. at Clearwater Lake Seventh Day Adventist Church, with visitation prior from noon to 2 p.m.
Inurnment will take place at Alpha Crematory.

Frances Ellen Bast
Frances Ellen Bast, formerly of Minocqua, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Morningside Health Care Center in Sheboygan. She was 94.
Mrs. Bast was a resident of Minocqua for 44 years prior to moving to Sheboygan in November 1993. She was resident of the health care center the past two years.
Mrs. Bast was born Feb. 13, 1907, in Fond du Lac. She was a graduate of Fond du Lac High School and Fond du Lac County Normal School. She taught at Byron District School #5 for 14 years. She married John N. Bast June 26, 1936, at St. John Catholic Church in Byron.
She was a member of the Little Flower Circle, Daughters of Isabella since 1932, Wisconsin Extension Homemakers and a 4-H leader for 25 years. She served two terms on the State 4-H Council and as a director of the Rhinelander Hodag Fair Association for six years.
Mrs. Bast is survived by five children: Marion J. Ingram of Strathmere, N.J.; Richard J. (Shirley) of Sheboygan; Kathleen A. Mitchell of East Troy; Jane (Michael) Dodson of Casa Grande, Ariz.; and David F. (Dorie) of Wisconsin Rapids; 16 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998, two sisters, one brother and one granddaughter.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Minocqua. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Lakeside Garden of Sleep Cemetery in Hazelhurst.

Emil 'Mouse' Kalous
Emil “Mouse” Kalous of Eagle River died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. He was 84.
He was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Mr. Kalous and his wife, Gert, moved to Eagle River from the Chicago area in the late 1960s to build a resort, Silver Beach Cottages. Following his wife's death in 1973, he returned to Chicago to work as a factory design engineer.
Upon retirement at age 72, Mr. Kalous moved back to Eagle River. His hobbies included gardening and building treehouses and bicycles for his grandchildren.
Survivors include three daughters, Darlene (Don Scharf) of Eagle River, Barbara J. of Arbor Vitae and Jacqueline of Montgomery, Ill.; one son, Ronald E. of Mountain City, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 19 at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River. The Rev. William Trosien officiated. Burial was in Eagle River Cemetery.

Dominick Shatkus
Dominick Shatkus of Rhinelander died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Friendly Village Nursing Home. He was 89.
Mr. Shatkus was born Feb. 16, 1912, in Chicago, Ill.
He retired from the Oneida County Highway Department in 1973. He owned and operated Mary Lou's Tavern on the south side of Chicago for 11 years.
A resident of Rhinelander since 1958, he was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Mr. Shatkus served on the town of Crescent board for 12 years, serving as chairman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Martha, on Sept. 5, 2001.
Survivors include daughter, Mary Lou (Gordon) Patriarca of Blue Island, Ill.; son, William (Sharon) of Algonquin, Ill.; half sister, Josephine Boivid of Chicago; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 21, at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River with the Rev. William Trosien officiating.
Inurnment will take place at Alpha Crematory.

Mary A. Smart
Mary A. Smart of Marshall died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at her home. She was 37.
Mrs. Smart was born Nov. 23, 1964, in Milwaukee, the daughter of John and Gayle Erdman. She married Troy Smart Nov. 3, 1984, in Eagle River.
Survivors include her parents, Jack (Joanne Lang) Erdman of Eagle River and Gayle Faye of Milwaukee; her husband, Troy; three children, Nicholas, Ashley and Cole; one brother, Mike Erdman of Sugar Camp; and one sister, Jenny Wagner of Eagle River.
A memorial service was held Jan. 19 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Marshall. The Rev. Paul Anderson officiated.

Charles Deforest Spahn
Charles Deforest Spahn of Conover died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. He was 58.
Mr. Spahn was born March 2, 1943, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Charles J. and Dorothy (Rose) Spahn. He attended St. Thomas Academy and Loras College. He married Dianna Lynn Davis Feb. 23, 1980, in Nassau, Bahamas.
He was active in the Dubuque Boys and Girls Club of America and the Dubuque Shooting Society, and served on the board of directors of American Trust and Savings Bank, the Finley Hospital Foundation and Dubuque Golf and Country Club. He was general chairman on the fund-raising campaign for the Mississippi Riverwalk and Discovery Center Project. An active supporter of the Iowa College Foundation, he was past director of both the Iowa Lumber Association and the Northwest Lumbermans Association. He was president and CEO of Spahn and Rose Lumber Co. of Dubuque, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Preston D. Spahn.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jeffrey (Sherry) and Douglas (Angie) of Dubuque and Mason of Decorah, Iowa; one daughter, Jennifer (Athmane) Spahn-Teghanemt of Coralville, Iowa; one grandson; and two brothers, Jared (Phyllis) of Hanover, Ill., and Robert (Sue) of Webster, N.Y.
Funeral services were held Jan. 23 at St. Raphael's Cathedral. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Dubuque.

Marguerite A. Corriveau
Marguerite A. Corriveau of Eagle River died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. She was 94.
She was born Sept. 12, 1907, in Adams County and was a registered nurse, graduating from St. Luke's in Racine. An Eagle River resident since 1950, she was the camp nurse at Camp Interlaken for many years. She was an avid hunter and angler, and was the former owner of Haskins Pine Haven Resort on Findley Lake.
Mrs. Corriveau was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Haskins, and a twin sister, Marjorie Nelson.
Survivors include her husband, Benjamin “Bob” Corriveau of Eagle River and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Jan. 30 at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eagle River. The Rev. Phillip Garrison officiated. Burial was in Eagle River Cemetery.

Beulah E. Freckmann
Beulah E. Freckmann of Winchester, formerly of Milwaukee, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. She was 87.
She was born June 9, 1914, in Campbellsport, the daughter of Edwin and Clara (Tuttle) Koch. She married Kermit Freckmann Feb. 20, 1933, in Waukegan, Ill.
Mrs. Freckmann was preceded in death by her husband Dec. 18, 1999; one son, James K.; one brother, Darwin; and one sister, Burnetta.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas H. (Marlene) of Menomonee Falls, Lloyd (Sue) of Hartford and Walter O. (Pat) of Sturgeon Bay; one daughter, Diane (John) Tuzee of Presque Isle; daughter-in-law, Sheila Freckmann of Presque Isle; one brother, Donald Koch of Madison; 18 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Winchester Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Winchester Emergency Services Auxiliary, c/o Sandy Coan, HC2 Box 402, Winchester, WI 54557.

Charles O. 'Chuck' Meyer
Charles O. “Chuck” Meyer of Deerfield, Ill., and Eagle River died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill. He was 77.
Mr. Meyer was born July 12, 1924, in Chicago, Ill. He earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago Lab School, and served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in the 808th Field Artillery Battalion. He received the Bronze Star for his part in the Normandy Invasion during World War II and other commendations.
He was treasurer of S&C Electric Co. in Chicago for many years. He was a pioneer in the application of electronic data systems in U.S. industry.
Mr. Meyer's hobbies included golf, reading mystery novels, doing crossword puzzles, skiing, fishing, using computers and playing bridge. He was a member of the Economic Club of Chicago and the Deerfield Senior Men's Club.
Survivors include his wife, Anne; two daughters, Zoe (Casey) Smith of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Mary (Jim) Langhenry of Chicago, Ill.; three sons, Buck (Ellen) of Cleveland, Tenn., Jim of Eagle River and John (Jan) of Buffalo Grove, Ill.; one sister, Charlotte (John) Buening of Milwaukee; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at Holy Cross Church in Deerfield, Ill.
Memorials may be made to the Holy Cross Millennium Campaign, 724 Elder Lane, Deerfield, IL 60015.

Helen R. Mueschen
Helen R. Mueschen of Eagle River died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at her home. She was 82.
Mrs. Mueschen was born June 15, 1919, in Johnston City, Ill.
Formerly of Cicero, Ill., she was an Eagle River resident since 1977. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. She was an active member of her church.
Her husband, Harold, preceded her in death Aug. 23, 1990.
Survivors include three daughters, Lucille M. (Jerry Sr.) Fischer of Downers Grove, Ill., Donna (Don) Kroth and Dorothy (Frank) James, both of Eagle River; one sister, Blanche Hettman of Bullhead City, Arizona; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 26 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Three Lakes. The Rev. Patrick Mulrooney officiated. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery in Eagle River.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Walter L. Read
Walter L. Read of Ashland, Ill., a former Three Lakes resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Menard Convalescent Center in Petersburg, Ill. He was 89.
He was born June 24, 1912, in Hillsboro, Ill., the son of George and Violet Christy Read. He married Ellen J. Shelley June 10, 1937, in Mattoon.
Before retirement, Mr. Read was a machinist with Northern Auto Supply Store in Rhinelander. He was an avid outdoorsman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Victor.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Wayne (Jane) of Marble Hill, Mo.; one daughter, Faye (Ronald) Shaw of Ashland, Ill.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Max of King; one sister, Vernis Lempea of Calumet, Mich.; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Jan. 26 at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Ashland, Ill. Burial was in Three Lakes Cemetery in Three Lakes.

Helen O. Ashton
A memorial service will be held for Helen Orgon Ashton, a lifelong resident of Eagle River, Saturday, July 5, 2003, at 11 a.m.
The service will be held at the Ashton residence located at 3612 Dam Lane in Phelps. A luncheon will follow the service.
Mrs. Ashton died Sept. 6, 2002. Her obituary appeared in the Sept. 11, 2002, edition of the Vilas County News-Review.

Robert L. Carter
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held for Robert L. Carter Saturday, July 5, 2003, at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Eagle River.
A native of Eagle River, Mr. Carter died Dec. 8, 2002, in Tucson, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alida and Frank Carter; and two brothers, G. Lyman and Frank Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughter, Barbara Firestone; his son, William; a brother, Colyn; two sisters, Florence LaRenzie and Merilyn Penn; and two grandsons.

Joseph J. Casey Sr.
Joseph J. Casey Sr. of Eagle River died Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. He was 84.
Mr. Casey was born Aug. 4, 1918, in Indiana.
An avid sports- and outdoorsman, his hobbies included hunting and fishing. His name appears in Boone & Crocket for a record bull moose.
A longtime area resident, he served as constable for the town of Cloverland and was a member of the Eagle River Police Department.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired after a 23-year military career in which he traveled widely.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Eagle River; four daughters, Gloria (Kelly) Edwards, Joann (Rick) Montezon, Charlotte (Leo) Lovison and Jane Schuster; two stepdaughters, Christine (Robert) Cole McCleerey and Wendy (Michael) Cole Gallagher; two sons, Joseph Jr. (Karen) and Stanley; a stepson, Eugene (Carol) Cole Jr.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held July 1 at 1 p.m. at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River. Deacon John McCaughn officiated.
Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery in Eagle River.
