Donald Robert Young
Donald Robert Young of St. Germain died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at his home. He was 76.
Mr. Young was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Chicago, Ill.
He was raised in Elgin, Ill., where he attended St. John's Lutheran School. He married Gladys Robbins Sept. 28, 1948, in Elgin.
An employee of St. Charles Steel Kitchens Co. for 46 years, he retired in 1992 and moved to St. Germain in 1994.
His hobbies included playing horseshoes, dartball and pool, hunting and fishing. In his youth, he was a boxer and was a member of the Golden Gloves.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald; and two brothers, Lyle and Earl.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Patricia (Jerry) Boyd of Elgin, Ill.; one son, Randy of St. Germain; one brother, Dick (Debbie) of Alpine, Utah; two sisters, Marilyn Swanson of South Elgin, Ill., and Charlene (Don) Belrichard of Algonquin, Ill.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He is further survived by nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Feb. 13 at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church in Sayner. The Rev. Dorothy Lindstrom officiated.
Michael A. 'Mike' Gajewski
Michael A. “Mike” Gajewski of Watersmeet, Mich., died Monday, April 26, 2004, at the Veterans Hospital in Iron Mountain, Mich. He was 56.
Mr. Gajewski was born Sept. 13, 1947, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Walter and Frances (nee Kozdemba) Gajewski.
He attended Loyola University in Chicago, and received a master's degree from Clark University.
Mr. Gajewski served in the U.S. Army in Germany and Korea, retiring with the rank of major in 1986.
He was a former president of the Eagle River chapter of Muskies Inc. and an officer of the Watersmeet Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Watersmeet Township School Board and was a member of the Watersmeet American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Bodil; and two daughters, Barbara and Malene, all of Watersmeet.
A funeral service was held May 1 at St. Albert's Catholic Church in Land O' Lakes. The Rev. Robert Koszarek officiated.
Interment
was in Watersmeet Cemetery.
Eugene 'Jute' Handrick
Eugene “Jute” Handrick of Minocqua died Monday, April 19, 2004, at his home. He was 76.
Mr. Handrick was born June 28, 1927, in Wausau, the son of George and Florence Handrick.
He was employed by Lakeland Liquor and later Badger Liquor as a salesman. His sales route included businesses in Eagle River, St. Germain and other parts of Vilas County.
Mr. Handrick was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Joseph and Jill; and two brothers, George and Vern.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; four daughters, Nancy (Steve) Moore of Rockford, Ill., Carolyn (Bill) Maguire of Marshfield, Marcie (Clifford) Colvin of Paddock Lake and Theresa Collazo of Franklin; four sons, George of Minocqua, Bruce (C.C.) of Idaho, David (Barbara) of Arcadia, Fla., and Jack (Terrie) of Green Bay; four sisters, Betty Stuth, Arlene Feldbruegge and Flo (Jim) Korb, all of Minocqua, and Marie (Fred) Jeske of Rock Island, Ill; one brother, Glen (Doris) of Minocqua; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held April 24 at Holy Family Catholic Church-Minocqua Chapel.
Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Woodruff.

Juliana E. Hunt
Juliana E. Hunt, formerly of Colby, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Lillian E. Kerr Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center in Phelps. She was 96.
Mrs. Hunt was born June 29, 1907, in Taylor County, the daughter of Frederic and Emma Werner.
A 1925 graduate of Dorchester High School, she married Frank Hunt Nov. 14, 1929, in Dorchester.
She was a member of First United Church of Christ and was active in the Ladies Guild. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors and the Colby Library board.
Mrs. Hunt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Emilie Genrich and Bertha Taylor; and a brother, Walter Werner.
Survivors include a son, Stuart (Mary) of Land O' Lakes; a brother, Herbert Werner of Milwaukee; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held May 3 at First United Church of Christ in Colby. The Rev. Kenneth Dix officiated.
Burial was in Dorchester Memorial Cemetery.

Genevieve 'Jean' Jacks
Genevieve “Jean” Jacks (nee Klescewski) of Three Lakes died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Dickenson County Memorial Hospital. She was 95.
Mrs. Jacks was born Dec. 28, 1908, in Boyne Falls, Mich.
A resident of Three Lakes since 1972, she was an active member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Three Lakes and was instrumental in starting the St. Theresa Thrift Shop. She was the church organist for many years. She was also a member of the Three Lakes Women's Club.
Her hobbies included gardening, knitting and sewing.
Mrs. Jacks was preceded in death by her husband, Archie, May 9, 1982.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon (Rick) Giles of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Leonard “Jim” (Julia) Klescewski of Armstrong Creek and Bernard (Chris) Klescewski of Florence; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 5, from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Three Lakes, with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. William Horath will officiate.
Burial will be in Armstrong Creek Cemetery.
Fred R. Shepard
Fred R. Shepard of Eagle River, formerly of Plainfield, Ill., died Friday, April 30, 2004, at his home. He was 59.
Mr. Shepard was born April 11, 1945, in Colorado Springs, Colo., the son of Harley and Virginia Shepard.
He was employed by Caterpillar Co. in Joliet, Ill., for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; two daughters, Jeanne of Gold Canyon, Ariz., and Lyn of Pompano Beach, Fla.; one son, Fred of Destin, Fla.; one brother, Larry (Sally) of Joliet; and two sisters, Judy (Al) Ventura and Susan (Ken) Kopta, both of Lombard, Ill.
He is further survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held May 4 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River.
Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery.

A memorial and burial service for Charles “Chuck” Halla will be held Saturday, May 8, at 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Eagle River.
Mr. Halla, formerly of Hartford, died Jan. 8, 2004, in Eagle River.
Robert 'Bob' Hermanson
Robert “Bob” Hermanson of Sayner died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Taylor Park Health Care Center in Rhinelander. He was 91.
Mr. Hermanson was born Jan. 3, 1913, in Wausau.
He was a resident of Sayner for more than 50 years. He worked as a caretaker and fishing guide at Camp Osoha on Muskellunge Lake in Boulder Junction for many years.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter and a member of Ducks Unlimited.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Agnes, who died Feb. 23, 1996.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Burk of Harbor Spring, Mich., and Sally Vredenburgh of Appleton; one son, Robert “Bob” of Sayner; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be Tuesday, May 18, at 10:30 a.m. at Plum Lake Cemetery. A funeral service will follow at noon at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church in Sayner. Visitation will precede the service from 11 a.m. to noon.

Robert Charles Jenkins
Robert Charles Jenkins of St. Germain died Monday, May 10, 2004, at his home. He was 62.
Mr. Jenkins was born Oct. 28, 1941, in Rhinelander. He was raised and attended schools in Pelican Lake and Elcho and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict.
He married Pat Janack Oct. 29, 1988, in Eagle River.
He worked as a logger in the Pelican Lake area and later in the St. Germain and Boulder Junction areas. He also owned and operated a lawn service.
His hobbies included spending time in the outdoors and feeding deer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Beulah Jenkins.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Ben and Warren, both of California, Tom (Trish) LeNoble of Shawano and Andy LeNoble of Gainsville, Fla.; two daughters, Wanda (Ron) Krueger of St. Germain and Brenda Beloff of Three Lakes; two brothers, Red (Trudy) of Pelican Lake and Edward (Sue) of Rhinelander; five sisters, Delores (Harold) Kirchner of Clintonville, Margie (Laurence) Melby, Linda Jenkins, Doris (Harold) Weidman and Rosella Call, all of Rhinelander; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He is further survived by nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Friday, May 14, at 11 a.m. at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Land O' Lakes.
Evelyn Blanche Kuckenbrod
Evelyn Blanche Kuckenbrod of Phelps died Monday, May 3, 2004, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. She was 88.
Mrs. Kuckenbrod was born March 24, 1916, in Johnstown, Pa., the daughter of Phillip and Blanche Wieseman.
She was raised, attended schools and lived most of her life in Pennsylvania.
She married William Kuckenbrod and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Phillip and Edward.
Survivors include two sons, Gary (Shirley) of Eagle River and William of Pompano Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Vivian (Harry) Wharton of Florida, Belva (Paul) Wagner, Charlotte (George) Gresh and Alethea (Andy) Virostek, all of Johnstown, Pa.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held and burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery in Eagle River.
Bob Sauter
Bob Sauter of North Land O' Lakes died Friday, May 7, 2004, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. He was 64.
Mr. Sauter was born April 13, 1940, in Bruce Crossing, Mich.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict.
A resident of North Land O' Lakes for 44 years, he married his wife, Judy, June 4, 1960, at St. Albert's Catholic Church in Land O' Lakes. He was employed by Nagel Lumber Co. for many years as a machine operator.
His hobbies included playing cards, hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his brother, James.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Renee (Dave) Nitka of Eagle River, Lisa (Ross) Mildren and Christine (Patrick) Mayer, both of Land O' Lakes; one son, Tom (Sarah) of Watersmeet, Mich.; his mother, Lorraine Sauter of Watersmeet, Mich.; and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral service was held May 11 at St. Albert's Catholic Church in Land O' Lakes, led by Pat Pintens.
Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Land O' Lakes.
Susan Kay Alsteen
Susan Kay Alsteen of Kenosha died Friday, May 15, 2004, at her home. She was 53.
She was born Jan. 27, 1951, in Crandon, the daughter of Charles and Ila (nee Jacobs) Barker.
A resident of Kenosha since childhood, she attended local schools and graduated from Tremper High School.
She married James Launderville in Kenosha Feb. 10, 1968. They later divorced.
Mrs. Alsteen was a homemaker and worked at Deluxe Video in Pleasant Prairie, as well as Lac Vieux Desert Casino in Watersmeet, Mich.
She was a member of River of Life Pentecostal Church in Kenosha and an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
She was preceded in death by her mother and a brother, Charles Barker.
Survivors include three sons, James (Tara) Launderville of Racine, David (Vicky) Launderville of Kenosha and Richard (Juli Naselius) Launderville of Union Grove; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Buddy (Cathy) Barker and Greg (Eliticia) Barker, both of Kenosha and Craig (Christine) Barker of Tipler; four sisters, Cheryl (Gerald) Bonn of Kenosha and Barbara (Haskel) Parker, Mary (John) White and Brenda (Robert) Wells, all of Eagle River; and two half-sisters, Audrey Wrobleski of Tichigan, Mich., and Vicki Waggoner of Jacksonville, Fla.
A funeral service was held May 18 at Kenosha Funeral Services in Kenosha.
Jack Brennan
Jack Brennan of San Diego, Calif., died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004. He was 82.
Mr. Brennan was born May 13, 1921. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne of San Diego.
A graveside funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, May 22, at Star Lake Cemetery in Sayner.
Burial will be in Star Lake Cemetery.
Jean Becker Juday
Jean Becker Juday of Land O' Lakes and Sycamore, Ill., died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Lillian E. Kerr Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center in Phelps. She was 85.
Mrs. Juday was born April 8, 1919, the daughter of J. Walter and Eunice (nee Morf) Becker.
She graduated from UW-Madison and married Tug Juday June 21, 1941.
A lifelong member of Federated Church in Sycamore, Ill., Mrs. Juday was also a member of Ely Memorial Church in Land O' Lakes.
She served for more than 50 years on the board of directors of IDEAL Industries, a company founded by her father. She served in several capacities at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, and was among the first recipients of the hospital's Heritage Award.
Mrs. Juday was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Virginia Larson; a sister, Doris Baack; a brother-in-law, Wolfram Baack; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Fabry.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, David (Suzanne) of Sycamore; four daughters, Nancy (John) Popovich of Denver, Colo., Sally of Fort Collins, Colo., Patricia of Land O' Lakes and Susan (Herbert) Golding of Lincolnshire, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 20, at 10 a.m. at Ely Memorial Church, with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m.
