Jerry D. VanDeVoorde
Jerry D. VanDeVoorde of Eagle River died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, at his home. He was 63.
Mr. VanDeVoorde was born May 31, 1942, in Geneseo, Ill., the son of Pete and Gretchen (nee Lenth) VanDeVoorde.
He married Jackie Klinck Dec. 22, 1962, in Port Byron, Ill.
He served in the U.S. Army for three years.
He was employed at Hungate's Gas Service station in Port Byron, Ill., Hungate's Auto in Hillsdale, Ill., and 3M Company in Cordova, Ill., retiring after 30 years in 2001.
His hobbies included fishing, boating and following races.
He was preceded in death by his father; an infant daughter, Barbara; and a nephew.
Survivors include his wife; his mother, Gretchen, of Silvis, Ill.,; a daughter, Penny (Sean) Veryzer of Hillsdale, Ill.; and two brothers, Vince (Kari) of Rock Island, Ill., and Terry (Connie) of Nashua, N.H.
A funeral service was held Oct. 4 at the Gibson Funeral Home in Port Byron, Ill.
Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Port Byron, Ill.
Maximillian Remington Brownell
Maximillian Remington Brownell, born Nov. 10, 1988, in Rhinelander, Wis., remembered with so much love by his family and friends.
Max lived in Appleton for three years with his mother, Kira, while she attended Lawrence University. Following her graduation, the two of them spent two wonderful years in Japan where Max, at the age of 8, became fluent in reading, writing and speaking Japanese. They returned to America where they stayed with Max's grandmother in Kira's childhood home in Sugar Camp. Max loved living in that house with his mother.
They moved to Eagle River when Max was in fifth grade, where he attended Northland Pines. He was an avid Boy Scout with Troop 501 since fifth grade, and just this year, he completed his Eagle Scout project.
For the past five years, he played trumpet in the band, Pep Band and currently Jazz Band. He also began cross-country running and was looking forward to the new season.
He had a passion for coin collecting, history and many other things. For the past two years he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and had just been awarded the Mitchell Award and achieved the officer rank of Cadet 2nd Lieutenant. He very much wanted to get his pilot's license.
Max's life is remembered and celebrated with great love by his mother and brother, Kira and Liam Oas; his father, Jeff Brownell, and his sister, Krista; grandparents, Leni and the late Jerry Oas, and Minnie Brownell and Richard Brownell; aunts and uncles, Erik and Stacy Oas, Krissy and Eric Bolte, Kurt Oas, Charlie and Corrine Brownell and Debbie and Wayne Petterson; and cousins, Courtney, Nick and Taylor Bolte, Ian Oas, Erika, Kara, Leah Petterson and Matt, Brad and Danielle Brownell.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at 5:30 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church on Silver Lake Road in Eagle River with Pastor William Trosien officiating. Visitation was Tuesday from 4 to 5 p.m. at the church.

Monty Bacic
Monty Bacic of Eagle River died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at his home. He was 58.
Mr. Basic was born Feb. 15, 1947, in Rhinelander, the son of Nick and Carrie Bacic.
He was raised and attended schools in Eagle River.
His hobbies included spending time outdoors and playing pool.
Survivors include his sister, Ruth (Brack) Congleton of Eagle River as well as aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service was held Oct. 17 at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River with the Rev. William Trosien officiating.
Burial was in Eagle River Cemetery in Eagle River.
Shirley A. Handsaker
Shirley A. Handsaker of Bozeman, Mont., formerly of Land O' Lakes, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at her home. She was 62.
She was born Oct. 10, 1943, at Mare Island Naval Base in California, the daughter of Dr. Everett and Ellen Eickhoff.
She was raised in Land O' Lakes and graduated from Eagle River High School. She attended Montana State University, where she received her bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in education.
She married William Handsaker in 1962.
Mrs. Handsaker taught first-grade at Irving School in Bozeman, Mont., for 35 years, retiring at the end of the 2004-'05 school year.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Carole.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Chuck (Brigette) and John (Jennifer); one daughter, Sally (Chuck) Donch; seven grandchildren; two brothers, E. Michael and Don; and her stepmother, Helen Eickhoff.
She is further survived by an aunt, nieces, nephews and many other friends and family.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 28, at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary at Methodist Church in Bozeman, Mont.
Memorials may be made to the Susan B. Kohman Foundation or to a charity of choice.
Laura Jean Huebner
Laura Jean Huebner, formerly of Appleton, died Monday, October 10, 2005, of cancer. She was 56.
Ms. Huebner was born Aug. 2, 1949, in Nashville, Tenn., the daughter of Fred and Alice Huebner.
She graduated from West Senior High School and Madison Area Technical College with a degree as a child-care assistant.
She volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, in the University Children's Hospital playroom and for the Headstart program.
Ms. Huebner spent time at the family home on Medicine Lake in Three Lakes. Her hobbies included swimming, boating to Chapel in the Pines on Preacher's Point and feeding deer.
She was employed at Walgreens/Rennebohms for 14 years and then by the state of Wisconsin Department of Transportation for 15 years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Frederick Charles; and her grandparents, Laura and Edwin Huebner, and Bertha and Paul Bast.
Survivors include her mother Alice (nee Bast) Huebner of Madison; and three sisters; Mary (Fritz) Hasler of Lindon, Utah, Anne Huebner of Bozeman, Mont., and Ellen (Jerry) Desmond of Sebastopol, Calif.
She is further survived by her aunt, Jean (Jorge) Bustamonte of El Salvador; a longtime friend, Ann Taylor; and many cousins.
A memorial service was held Oct. 15 at Bethany United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made HospiceCare Inc., Oakwood Foundation or Bethany United Methodist Church.
Ellen N. Lamon
Ellen N. Lamon of Appleton died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at Prairie Home in Menasha. She was 93.
Mrs. Lamon was born May 18, 1912, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Albert and Hanora (nee McAvoy) Bockelman.
She married David E. Lamon Jr. Oct. 8, 1936.
An Appleton resident since 1946, she was a homemaker and active at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she made vestments and helped with church and school activities. She was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church.
Her hobbies included collecting recipes and she had an extensive collection of cookbooks.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jan. 1, 2003; her brother, Albert Bockelman Jr.; and her sister, Marie Mohr.
Survivors include three sons, David E. “Doc” (Diane) Lamon III of Appleton; Steven (Annette) Lamon Sr. of River Forest, Ill.; Thomas (Patricia) Lamon of Conover; one sister-in-law, Frances Wichmann of Sun Prairie; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Oct. 13 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Appleton with the Rev. Donald Zuleger officiating. Burial was in Three Lakes Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Research and the Oncology Unit of St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Bernice B. Marro
Bernice B. Marro of Springfield, Tenn., formerly of Three Lakes and Chicago, Ill., died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005. She was 93.
She and her husband, Raymond Marro, spent many summers at their cottage on Planting Ground Lake in Three Lakes. They retired to Three Lakes in 1976.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond Jr. (Lynn) of Urbana, Ill., and Three Lakes, and James (Paula) of Whitehouse, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She is further survived by many friends.
A funeral service was held Oct. 6 at St. Blase Catholic Church in the Chicago, Ill., area.
Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove, Ill.
Lena Olson
Lena Olson of Tomahawk, formerly of Sayner, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at her home. She was 95.
Mrs. Olson was born April 21, 1910, in Merrill, the daughter of Joseph and Christina Rothmeyer.
A former resident of Sayner, she moved to Tomahawk in 2000.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas “Tommy” in 1968; two daughters, Nancy and Violet; two sons, Joe and Bill; two brothers, Elmer and Reuben; four sisters, Laura, Edna, Adelia and Hattie; and an infant grandson, Todd.
Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie O'Brien of Elizabeth, N.J., and Ruthann (Robert) Dorn of Lake Delton; a son, Edward “Harold” of Irma; a sister-in-law, Stella Rothmeyer of Merrill; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 11:30 a.m. at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church in Sayner with the Rev. Mary Weinkauf officiating. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in Plum Lake Cemetery in Plum Lake.

Howard J. Roerdink
Howard J. Roerdink of Eagle River died Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at his home. He was 90.
Mr. Roerdink was born July 29, 1915, in Holland, the son of John and Minnie (nee Meerdink) Roerdink.
He attended Oostburg Grade School, and was employed by Gilt Edge Furnace Co. in Cedar Grove.
Mr. Roerdink was in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, serving as a Seabee during World War II.
He married Helena Theune Aug. 16, 1946, in Oostburg.
Employed by Advance Screw Manufacturing in Milwaukee for more than 30 years, he retired in 1978.
He and his wife moved to Eagle River in 1980, where he was a member of American Legion Post 114, Easy Eagles and First Congregational United Church of Christ.
His hobbies included woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one sister, Alice TeRonde of Oostburg; and one sister-in-law, Cornelie Roerdink of Sheboygan Falls.
A funeral service was held Oct. 15 at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River with the Rev. Philip Garrison officiating.
Memorials may be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ scholarship fund or a charity of choice.
Isabelle Walkowski
Isabelle Walkowski of Sugar Camp died Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at Aspirus Lillian Kerr Healthcare Center Inc. in Phelps. She was 83.
Mrs. Walkowski was born Dec. 11, 1921, in Reid, the daughter of John and Sophie Pastuska.
Raised in the town of Reid, she married George Walkowski June 17, 1939, at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church in Bevent. She farmed with her husband for almost 20 years before moving to Sugar Camp.
She was a member of St. Kunegunda Catholic Church, the Rosary Guild and was active in various senior organizations.
Her hobbies included fishing and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, May 14, 1999; an infant daughter, Marie; four brothers, John, Leo, Walter and Joe; two sisters, Frances and Lillian; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Walkowski.
Survivors include two daughters, Mabel (Gary) Busko of Sauk Rapids, Minn., and Beverly (Robert) Mautino of Torrence, Calif.; two sons, Dennis of Sugar Camp and Wallace of Rhinelander; a sister, Florence Davidowski of Wausau; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Oct. 13 at St. Kunegunda Catholic Church in Sugar Camp with the Rev. William Horath officiating.
Burial was in St. Kunegunda Catholic Cemetery in Sugar Camp.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice in her name.
Nancy Lee Lawrence
Nancy Lee Lawrence (nee Bush), age 62, passed away at home on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, after waging a spirited battle against cancer for the past 22 years.
She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Ron, and their children, Scott (Cory) Lawrence of Waukesha, Wis., and Kirsten (Rich) Lehman of Stewartville, Minn. She was a much-loved “Nana” to her grandchildren, Amy Lawrence, and Tristan and Paige Lehman. She was a wonderful sister to Dorothy Anne Krueger of Oconomowoc, Wis., and her brother, Cary. Nancy Lee was loved and respected by all of her family members and by her very many dear and loving friends. Also, “Mrs. Lawrence” was a favorite teacher at the Land O' Lakes Elementary School for the past 11 years, and was a loyal member of Ely Memorial United Church of Christ in Land O' Lakes, Wis.
In 2003, Nancy was named the Honorary Chair for the Northwoods Relay For Life and stated, “I'm honored . . . going through cancer is not a pretty picture. If I can assist anybody, I will do it.”
In her living and her dying, she inspired all who knew and loved her with her courage, grace and optimism. She truly did “Live well . . . Laugh often . . . and love much.”
The family is especially grateful to the nurses at Howard Young Medical Center and Marshfield Clinic, and those at the Ministry Home Care Hospice Program.
Services were held Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Ely Memorial United Church of Christ. Visitation was held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church.
