SMITH, Miriam "Glenna"
- SMITH: Miriam "Glenna," died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., with her daughter, Donna, and son-in-law, Douglas, by her side.
She was born Nov. 16, 1919, to Ethel (Moreshead) and Llewellyn Jordan and raised in Islington, Mass. In 1943 she married Donald J. Smith, who died in May 2000, shortly after celebrating 57 years together.
Glenna enjoyed being a homemaker and mother and cared for many neighborhood children in Norwood, Mass., before moving to Sandwich, Mass., in 1972. Crafts, crosswords and cookie making were among her interests.
She moved to Newark, Vt., in June to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Douglas Coughlin. She also leaves Donna's two sons, Joshua Shore of North Reading, Mass., and Jacob Shore of Athol, Mass. Survivors also include her daughter, Glenna Foster of New Hampshire; her son, Travis Foster and his wife, Donna, and their son, Michael Rinere, all of Bourne, Mass.; and many loving and caring friends.
She was predeceased by a sister, Luella Rea of Walpole, Mass., and a brother, Richard Jordan of Coneseus, N.Y.
There will be no services at this time.

RUTLEDGE, Oceola "Olie" (Greene)
- RUTLEDGE: Oceola "Olie" (Greene), 81, of St. Johnsbury House, Apt. 207, St. Johnsbury, died unexpectedly at NVRH, Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2001.
Olie waitressed at the old Willoughby Diner and the New Avenue Hotel Restaurant. She used to attend church at Faith Chapel on Pleasant Street, loved to play bingo and was a member of VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons, Gary Greene of St. Johnsbury, and Larry Greene of Auburn Maine; three grandchildren; three sisters, Rowena Perkins of Auburndale, Fla., Dorine Burchette of Deep Gap, N.C., and Dorothy Lennon of Pomona, Calif; and one brother, Clarence Jameson of Dover, N.H.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Pardon Jameson and James Clark; and one sister, Mary Smith.
Because of her love of animals, memorial contributions may be directed to Elizabeth H. Brown Humane Society, in care of Ann Kimball, 180 Emerson Falls Dr., St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.

INGERSON, Elliott W.
- INGERSON: Elliott W., 71, of Boismont Drive, Jefferson, N.H., died Friday afternoon, Sept. 21, 2001, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, N.H.
Mr. Ingerson was born in Jefferson, Jan. 21, 1930, the son of Albert and Helen (Page) Ingerson.
A lifetime resident of Jefferson he held several jobs, including the Jefferson Road Agent, farmer and truck driver for Resi-Chem and Northern Paving. For 39 years he has been the caretaker of the Carter Estate in Jefferson.
Family members include his wife Marietta (Enman) Ingerson of Jefferson; five children and their spouses, Lynn I. Smith and Michael of Salem, Va., Wanda J. Sloan and Rick of Bradenton Beach, Fla., Dona L. Sanborn and Wes of Gorham, N.H., Rodney E. Ingerson and Pat of Jefferson, Nancy S. Skillin and Wayne of Dalton, N.H.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-granchildren; a brother, Carroll Ingerson of Jefferson; two sisters, Stella Paschal of Jefferson, and Marilyn Wetmore of Brandon, Vt.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Jason E. Stone, on March 1, 1992.
There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held Monday morning, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m., at the Forest Vale Cemetery, Jefferson. The Rev. Dean A. Stiles, pastor of St. John's Methodist Church, Jefferson, will officiate.

CONLEY, Edward Dale Sr.
- CONLEY: Edward Dale Sr., 54, East Haven, passed away at his residence on Monday, Sept. 24, 2001.
He was born on Jan. 31, 1947, in Sheffield.
He served in the Army during Vietnam.
Before retiring, he worked as a nurse at the Veterans Hospital in White River Junction, at the Vermont Department of Corrections and U-Save in Lyndonville.
He is survived by his mother, Alice Stone of St. Johnsbury; his children, Edward D. Conley Jr. of Keene, N.H., Nyoakla Conley of Putney, and Shawn Conley of Putney; his stepchildren, Ronette Maloney of Westminister, and Shane Farrell of Putney; four grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; by a sister, Mayma Snowden of Putney; and by many other family members.
Graveside services will be held at the Wm Dexter Cemetery in Sheffield on Friday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Barbara Dwyer officiating.

TWOMBLY, Elwin H. Jr.
- TWOMBLY: Elwin H. Jr., 63, of Lyndon Center, a longtime history teacher at Lyndon Institute, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, in the emergency room at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury.
He was born in Concord, Vt., April 20, 1938, the son of Elwin H. and Claire (Parker) Twombly.
A graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1956, Elwin received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Vermont. He served in the U.S. Army overseas as well.
A teacher dedicated to Lyndon Institute and its students for 27 years, he taught history and later became the chairman of the social studies department for 16 years. He served as adviser to the student council for many years, was creator of the first modern audio-visual department, established the close-up club, enthusiastically supported and directed winter carnivals for many years, gave faithful dedication to scholarship in social studies throughout his tenure, and was head of the "Select Community" there. He was a good friend to any and all members of the Lyndon Institute community.
Elwin enjoyed people and good conversation. He was an avid reader, a Boston Celtics fan and derived great pleasure cultivating his rhubarb patch, from which he made pies, muffins and anything else he could add rhubarb to. After retirement he enjoyed spending winters in Puerto Rico. He was a life member of the VFW Post 10038 of Lyndonville.
He is survived by two sons and their wives, Sean and Stacey Twombly of Washington, D.C., and Kevin and Heather Twombly of Newmarket, N.H.; two brothers, Stephen Twombly of Penacook, N.H., and Christopher Twombly of Henniker, N.H.; two nieces, Carrie and Brooke; a nephew, Christopher; former students, faculty and staff of Lyndon Institute and many close friends.
Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home Sunday, Sept. 23, from 6-8 p.m.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 6:30 p.m., at the Lyndon Institute auditorium, with his close friend, Mike Flynn, officiating. Burial in the family lot at Mount Pleasant Cemetery will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

MIDDLETON, A. Elizabeth (Jackson)
- MIDDLETON: A. Elizabeth (Jackson), 82, formerly of Canterbury Inn in St. Johnsbury, died Saturday evening, Sept. 22, 2001 at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon.
She was born March 9, 1919, in Raleigh, N.C., the daughter of Donald R. and Eleanor B. (Mull) Jackson. On Sept. 19, 1940, she married Joseph L. Middleton.
Mrs. Middleton lived in Hendersonville, N.C., prior to moving to St. Johnsbury in 1995. She was a professor of sociology and psychology for nearly 30 years, teaching at North Carolina State University and Peace College, both located in Raleigh, N.C.
A person who loved people, she maintained a positive outlook on life and had a great thirst for knowledge.
Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Racine and her husband, Charles of Barnet, and Jacilyn Middleton of Atlanta, Ga.; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph L. Middleton in 1991; her brother, Donald Jackson Jr.; and her sister, Dr. Susan Mellette.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

GILE, Harriette Laverne (Burbank)
- GILE: Harriette Laverne (Burbank), 75, a longtime resident of Bradenton, Fla., died in Florida, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, after a brief illness.
She was born in Albany, Vt., June 24, 1926, the daughter of W. Frank and Marjorie Burbank. She graduated from Craftsbury Academy in 1944 and was married to Graydon Gile, March 26, 1948, in Albany. She enjoyed reading, craftwork and visits to camp at Shadow Lake in Glover.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna Robb and her friend Fred Costey, of Ellenton, Fla., and Linda Imler and her husband David of Everett, Pa.; a son, Graydon Gile Jr. and his wife Dee of Greensboro Bend; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; cousins, nieces and nephews; and her beloved poodle, Brandy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Graydon Gile Sr., in 1969; her parents; in-laws; and brothers, William and Clayton Burbank.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Albany United Methodist Church in Albany, Vt., with pastor Nathan Strong officiating. Burial will follow in the Albany Village Cemetery.

HANNAH, Pauline A. "Paulie"
- HANNAH: Pauline A. "Paulie," 84, passed away at her residence in Sugar Hill, N.H., early Tuesday morning, Oct. 2, 2001, following a long and courageous battle with the effects of polio.
She was born and raised in Wellesley, Mass., the daughter of John C. and Susan (Shaw) Lee. She graduated from Bennington College in Vermont, where she majored in the arts.
She married Selden J. Hannah in 1938 and moved to Franconia/Sugar Hill, where they owned and operated the Ski Hearth Farm, which was an operating farm and ski lodge. Here she developed her desire for ski racing and won the first Eastern Giant Slalom Championship.
In 1949, Pauline was stricken with polio and subsequently confined to a wheelchair as nearly a total quadriplegic. As such she became manager of the farm operation. She was also an avid member of the Franconia Ski Club and her fondness, desire and determination for ski racing was subsequently passed on to many area children through the ski club. Her four children were ardent competitors, and her eldest daughter was a member of the U.S. Olympic Ski Team.
She was predeceased by her daughter Lucy in 1973 and her husband in 1991.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan Hannah of Sugar Hill; two sons, Frank Hannah of Andover, Mass., and Selden Hannah of Rochester, N.H.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a time, date and place yet to be announced.

- FOX: Francis "Frank," 96, of Dunedin, Fla., formerly of Congress Street in Bethlehem, N.H., passed away Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at the Mease Hospital in Dunedin.
He was born a son to Francis S. and Martha (Herrick) Fox, Nov. 17, 1904, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Frank served under Mayors Walker, McEe and LaGuardia in New York, and then transferred to the Board of Education and served as principal administration associate to the secretary
PARENT, Mary Jane
- PARENT: Mary Jane, 87, of Grafton Street, Lisbon, N.H., died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at the Grafton County Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born in Bath, N.H., the daughter of Harvey and Myrtle (Lyndes) Chase. She worked for Henschel Shoe Company, Littleton, as a stitcher, and retired in 1985. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and most of all, her family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Fred Parent; a son, Gary Parent; three daughters, Charlotte Derosia and Joyce Randall of Lisbon, and Sally Steel of Hillsboro, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lette Merrill of Oregon.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m., at the Ross Funeral Home, Lisbon Chapel, with the Rev. Arthur Savage officiating. Burial will follow at the Grove Hill Cemetery.
DEMERS, Mrs. Madeleine G.
- DEMERS: Mrs. Madeleine G., 79, of St. Johnsbury, died at home early Saturday morning, Sept. 29, 2001.
She was born in Quebec City, Canada, April 12, 1922, the daughter of Albert and Laura (Letourneau) Berthiaume.
Survivors include six children, a daughter, Madeleine and husband Daniel of St. Johnsbury, and five sons, Guy and wife Rachel Demers of St. Johnsbury, Daniel and wife Betty Demers of Lyndonville, Pierre and wife Deborah Demers of Bloomfield, N.M., Michael and wife Pamela Demers of Pembroke, N.H., and Romvald Demers of St. Johnsbury; 10 grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter, Hailey Morgan Demers.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jean-Louis Demers, Dec. 23, 1999.
Services will be held Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Hardwick with Brad Nichols officiating. Burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in St. Johnsbury at the convenience of the family.
Friends are invited to meet the family Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home.

BULLARD, Mildred I. "Midge"
- BULLARD: Mildred I. "Midge," 71, of East Ryegate, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001 at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, N.H., following an extended illness.
She was born in Groton, April 14, 1930, a daughter of Frank K. and Mildred I. (Bennett) Davis. Midge had resided in the Groton and Ryegate area her entire life, where she was well-known as the owner of the former Midge's Snack Bar in East Ryegate. She was a member of Ross-Wood Auxiliary Unit 20 American Legion of Woodsville, N.H.
Midge was predeceased by her husband, Russell C. Bullard, Nov. 11, 1983; her father in 1934 and mother in 1998; and also a grandson, Aaron Russell Bullard, May 12, 1996.
Survivors include three sons, Russell and Kenneth Bullard, both of East Ryegate, and Gary Bullard of Ashburn, Va.; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Evelyn Wessman of Naples, N.Y.; two brothers, Joseph Davis of Enfield, Conn., and Ercil Davis of Derby; and several nieces and nephews.
A calling hour will be today from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Ricker Funeral Home, Birch Street, Woodsville, N.H.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Joseph Rinaldi, pastor of the Newbury Bible Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Barnet Center Cemetery in Barnet.

BELL, Gregory C.
- BELL: Gregory C., 60, of Gilman, died suddenly, Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at his residence on Jefferson Avenue.
Mr. Bell was born in Whitefield April 3, 1941, the son of Clinton T. and Ruth (Brown) Bell.
Raised in South Lunenburg, he was a graduate of Concord High School, Concord, Vt. He had been a longtime resident of Gilman and worked as a master electrician for Gilman Paper for many years. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church in Gilman. Memberships included the Gilman Fire Department and the Knights of Columbus.
Family members include two children, Thomas G. Bell, presently stationed with the U.S. Navy in Puerto Rico, and Laurie Leigh Bell Bresnahan of Winooski; two brothers, Bruce J. Bell of Peterborough, N.H., and George A. Bell of Dalton; three sisters, Elizabeth A. Pearson of Hooksett, N.H., Barbara L. Martin of Lancaster, and Marilyn R. Bell of Manchester, N.H.; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday morning, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m., at St. Theresa's Church in Gilman. The Rev. Joseph Lively, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, South Lunenburg.

MILES, Sylvia A.
- MILES: Sylvia A., 84, of St. Johnsbury, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Chelsea, Vt., Nov. 26, 1916, the daughter of Henry W. and Haddie (Dearborn) Burbank.
Sylvia spent most of her life in the Chelsea area prior to moving to St. Johnsbury. She married Harold Miles, who predeceased her in 1950. Sylvia enjoyed picture puzzles, poetry, embroidering, and was an avid reader.
She is survived by a son, Philip "Phil" Miles and wife Pauline of Concord; a sister, Gertrude Folsom and husband Ike of Waitsfield; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Evelyn Miles of York, Neb.; two grandsons, and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial graveside service will be held Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m., at the Highland Cemetery in Chelsea, with the Rev. John Burbank officiating.

LaCLAIR, Albert D.
- LaCLAIR: Albert D., 77, of Whitcomb Road, Drewsville, N.H., died at the home of his son in Walpole, N.H., Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001.
He was born July 14, 1924 in St. Johnsbury, the son of Albert II and Clara V. (Duclos) LaClair. Mr. LaClair attended school in St. Johnsbury, returning after the war to graduate.
He worked for the Lenton farm in Passumpsic before the war and returned to work on dairy farms in Sutton; Hoosic Falls, N.Y.; and at the Far Hills Farm in Walpole. He worked for several local companies including R.N. Johnson and Pinnacleview Equipment of Walpole, as well as the Stratton Mountain Corporation.
From 1971 to 1974 Mr. LaClair was a part owner of Tri-Town Yamaha, a local retailer of motorcycles, snowmobiles and related equipment with stores in Keene and Alstead, N.H. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945.
On Nov. 27, 1948, in Danville, he married Madeline R. Bryer, who survives him. He is also survived by three sons, Larry LaClair of Brunswick, Maine, Len LaClair of Jericho, and Lewis LaClair of Walpole; two daughters, Linda Campbell, and Mary Knott, both of Langdon, N.H.; two brothers Leon LaClair of St. Johnsbury, and Raymond LaClair of Avila Beach, Calif.; five sisters, Lorana Waite of Burlington, Odile Jacobs of Lakeland, Fla., Pat Mazur of Youngstown, N.Y., Charlotte Bradburn of Wichita, Kan., and Laura DiBacco of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Eugene and Cecil; and one sister, Adela Baggett.
There will be a memorial service at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Drewsville, on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. There will be no calling hours.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Danville Cemetery.

CALLAHAN, Hazel (Duke)
- CALLAHAN: Hazel (Duke), 86, of Port Orange, Fla., passed away on Sept. 16, 2001, at the Florida Hospital Deland, in Deland, Fla.
She was born on Sept. 14, 1914, in Lyndonville, the daughter of the late George and Ruth Duke.
She attended school in Lyndon, graduated from Lyndon Institute, Class of 1931, and Lyndon Normal School, Class of 1934.
She worked in the St. Johnsbury and Montpelier School systems, then worked for National Life Insurance Company in Montpelier for 34 years. After retiring in October 1979, she moved to Florida.
She was active in the Palette & Brush Club in Daytona Beach, Fla.
She is survived by her nephew, George F. Duke of Englewood, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Doria Duke of Dayton, Ohio; and cousins, Clarice Hennessey of Deland, who was a dear friend and took loving care of her, Ruth and Sidney Nurenburg of Lyndonville, Arthur and Beverly McCann of Lyndonville, Maurice and Edna Stone of St. Johnsbury, Rodney and Ellen Kerr of Greensboro, and Thomas and Colleen Kerr of Waitsfield.
Graveside services will be held at the Lyndon Center Cemetery on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at 9 a.m., with the Rev. Mel Richardson officiating.
