Marshall Moats, Jr.
Marshall Moats, Jr., 72, of 1215 Frederick St., Hagerstown died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at his home.
Born Jan. 28, 1925, in Hutton, Md., he was the son of the late Marshall and Eva Cora Pfeifer Moats.
A Maryland Department of Natural Resources employee, he started work in 1947 as a seasonal employee with Herrington Manor State Park in Oakland, Md. In 1952, he became superintendent of Gambrill State Park in Frederick County, Md. He was superintendent of Washington Monument State Park for 25 years until his retirement in 1987.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean War.
He was a member of the Boonsboro Bible Church.
He was a member of the Maryland Classified Employees Association.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Madeline Nethken Moats; one daughter, Sharon L. Morgan of Sharpsburg; four sons, Richard K. Moats, of Annandale, Va., Kenneth R. Moats of Boonsboro, Michael D. Moats of Clear Spring, and Timothy B. Moats of Hagerstown; one sister, Mary C. Gerrone, of Avon Lake, Ohio; one brother, George W. Moats of Tequesta, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl Moats, Homer Moats and Carl Moats.
Services will be held Wednesday, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. The Rev. Joseph Downs will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery in Boonsboro.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Lee D. Huff
MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Lee D. Huff, 62, of Old Hagerstown Road, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Born July 31, 1934, in Manheim, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ralph and Belle Funk Huff.
He was employed by A&P in Frederick for 16 years. He retired in 1991 from Giant Foods Inc. as a meat cutter. Afterward, he operated Lee's Sharp All tool sharpening service from his home.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served from 1954 to 1957.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice Lancaster Huff; one daughter, Janet Reeder of Frederick; one son, Michael Huff of Smithsburg; two sisters, Thelma Farden of Canton, Mich., and Alice Kisner of Norfolk, Va.; three brothers, G.M. Huff of Graeagle, Calif., Patrick Huff of Oxen Hill, Md., and Fred Huff of Ridgeley, W.Va.; and two grandsons.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville, Md. The Rev. Susan Halse will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Romaine M. Grant
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Romaine Maurice Grant, 84, of Berkeley Springs, and formerly of Silver Spring, Md., died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at his home.
Born March 21, 1913, in Joliet, Ill., he was the son of the late Maurice and Lizzie Bacon Grant.
He moved to Berkeley Springs in 1977.
He retired in 1978 from the U.S. Government Services Administration, Washington, D.C., where he worked as a carpenter and cabinetmaker.
He was a member of Berkeley Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Grace Steeves Grant; three daughters, Nancy Carol Rinehart of Columbus, Ohio, Barbara Joyce Manbeck of Highland, Md., and Denise Eileen Grant of Vienna, Va.; one son, Kenneth Romaine Grant of Madison, Tenn.; one sister, Dorothy Miller of Mentone, Calif.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lola Spencer, Vivien Grant and Verna Grant; and one brother, Leonard Grant.
Memorial services will be Saturday, June 21, at 4 p.m., at Berkeley Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church, U.S. 522 South, Berkeley Springs. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

John F.W. Pflueger
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - John F.W. Pflueger, 70, a resident of Penn Hall, and formerly of 930 Cider Press Road, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at Penn Hall Nursing Center, Chambersburg.
Born Sept. 8, 1926, in the Philippines, he was the son of the late Otto W. and Hazel Deetta Kenward Pflueger.
He was a 1944 graduate of Chambersburg High School. He attended the Mont Alto Campus of Penn State University.
He retired from Descom at Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, in 1983.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.
He was of the Episcopal faith.
He was a member of George Washington Lodge 143 F&AM, Chambersburg; George Washington Royal Arch Chapter; Harrisburg Consistory; Scottish Rite Club; National Rifle Association; and life member of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599, Chambersburg.
He is survived by two friends, M. Louise Pile and Allan A. "Buck" Stine, both of Chambersburg. He was the last of his immediate family.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Michale E. Allwein will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg. Military graveside services will be conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Thursday one hour prior to the service.

Howard R. Nave Sr.
BIG POOL - Howard Ray Nave Sr., 64, of 13431 Pectonville Road, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at his home.
Born Sept. 25, 1932, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Edward Bailey and Mary Agnes Nalley Nave.
He was employed by W.D. Byron Tannery in Williamsport, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of Virginia Church of God.
He was a member of Western Maryland Sportsman Club.
He is survived by his wife, Opal Helen Reed Nave; three daughters, Rosalyn Smoot and Ranae Kesecker, both of Clear Spring, and Rhonda Shrader of Hancock; one stepson, Norval Hull of Falling Waters, W.Va.; one sister, Deloris E. Hays of Cavetown; two brothers, William E. McKinley of Williamsport and Lester A. Nave of Fairplay; nine grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Howard R. Nave Jr.; one brother, Edward "Buddy" Nave; and one stepgrandchild.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Virginia Avenue Church of God. The Rev. A. Paul Harne and the Rev. Tim Shawyer will officiate. Burial will be in Parkhead Cemetery, Big Pool.

Donald F. Quigley
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Ret. Capt. Donald F. "Don" Quigley, 79, of 6025 Greenbrier Terrace, died Friday, June 6, 1997, at his home.
Born Jan. 13, 1918, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of the late Joseph and Helen Welch Quigley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxyne K. Ballew Quigley, in 1981.
He graduated from high school in 1936 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He attended Iowa State University for one year. He was a 1941 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and did post-graduate work there.
He served with the U.S. Navy for 28 years. He served on the USS Patterson and USS Saipan in World War II and commanded the USS Brush during the Korean War. He also commanded the USS Ranger and USS Ackernar.
Following retirement from the Navy, he worked as an engineer for Bunker-Ramo in Washington, D.C., and then for the U.S. Bureau of Standards and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
He received Bronze Stars, ribbons and campaign medals.
He was a member of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, Chambersburg, Pa.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus and Alhambra. He was a member of Multiple Sponsor of Christian Children's Fund, Penn National Homeowner's Association and Elder Hostel.
He is survived by four daughters, Diane Brennan of Galway, N.Y., Patricia Griffiths of Poolesville, Md., Judith Thackery of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Teri Quigley of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; one son, Dennis Quigley of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Bill Quigley of Morrow Bay, Calif., and Jack Quigley of Shawnee, Kan.; four grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews.
Military services will be Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. at Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Va., with the Catholic chaplain as celebrant.
The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa., today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Elwood B. Fitzgerald Sr.
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Elwood Boyd Fitzgerald Sr., 79, of 24 Landis Ave., who died Saturday, June 7, 1997, was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Joyce Elaine Fitzgerald.

Florence C. L. Bitner
EVERETT, Pa. - Florence C. Lynch Bitner, 74, of Route 3, Everett, formerly of Greencastle, Pa., died Sunday, June 8, 1997, in Memorial Hospital of Bedford County in Everett.
Born April 10, 1923, in Everette, she was the daughter of Nellie Milliman.
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter L. "Pat" Bitner who died Oct. 30, 1979.
She attended school at the Emerson one room school in Bedford County.
She was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one aunt, Emma Catherine Spade of Everett; and cousins.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Minnich-Miller-May Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. The Rev. David J. Armstrong will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Wednesday in the funeral home.

Doris V. W. Baxter
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Doris Victoria Wright Baxter, 89, of Hedgesville, W.Va., died Thursday, June 5, 1997, at St. Victoria's Elder Care Residence in Berkeley Springs.
Born Oct. 18, 1907, in Fergus Falls, Minn., she was the daughter of the late William George Passey and Laura Lewis Wright.
She retired as a clerk/typist from the Defense Mapping Service, U.S. Department of the Army, Washington, D.C.
She was a homemaker.
She attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Berkeley Springs.
She is survived by three sons, Frank W. Baxter of Potomac, Md., John C. Baxter of Bakersfield, Calif., and William G. Baxter of Hedgesville; one sister Kathleen Travers, of Charlottesville, Va.; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters Margaretta Robertson and Muriel Moncure; and one brother, Cyril Wright.
Services will be held at St. James Episcopal Church and burial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Fergus Falls, Minn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may bse made to St. Victoria's Elder Care Residence, 515 S. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Ruth N. Harshman
Ruth N. Harshman, 94, of the Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home in Boonsboro, and formerly of Frederick, Md., died Tuesday June 10, 1997.
Born Oct. 7, 1902, in Wolfsville, Md., she was the daughter of the late John F. and Annie Harshman.
She was a member of Frederick Church of the Brethren.
She is survived by one sister, Ann Louise Guyton of Burkittsville, Md.; four nieces, Lorraine Watkins of Clarksburg, Md., Patricia Naugle of Boonsboro, and Nancy Reeder and Teresa "Terry" Shafer, both of Middletown, Md.; two nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
There will be no visitation.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Myersville, Md. The Rev. Larry Fogle will officiate.
A memorial service also will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home, 8517 Mapleville Road, Boonsboro. The Rev. Louis Emerick, will officiate.

Louise B. Snyder
BEDFORD, Pa. - Louise B. Snyder, 93, of South Juliana Street, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at Memorial Hospital of Bedford County, Pa.
Born July 28, 1903, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Van C. and Christie Reichard Beachley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Richard C. Snyder, in 1989.
She graduated from Juniata College and attended Columbia, Eastman and Julliard schools of music.
She taught piano, organ and voice in the Bedford area. She was an accomplished oil painting artist.
She was a member and former organist of Trinity Lutheran Church, Bedford.
She was a member of Soroptimist Club; Bedford Hospital Auxiliary; Bedford County Art Guild; and former member of Bedford Springs Chapter 41 of Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by one daughter, Sharlet Baker of Bedford; one son, Richard V. Snyder of Harrisburg, Pa.; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Donovan R. Beachley.
Services were held Wednesday, June 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bedford. The Rev. Raymond E. Short officiated. Burial was in Bedford Cemetery.

Charles E. Harris
CHARLES TOWN, W. Va. - Charles Edward Harris, 58, of Charles Town, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born June 28, 1938, in Winchester, he was the son of the late Melissa Harris.
He was employed as a groom at Charles Town Races.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Dotson Harris; one daughter Rebecca "Becky" Dawson of Winchester; one son, Charles E. Harris of Seattle, Wash.; one brother James Myers of Winchester; and five grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ebenezer Mt. Calvary Holy Church at Summit Point, W.Va. The Rev. Charles W. Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home in Ranson, W.Va.

Franklin E. James
BOLIVAR, W.Va. - Franklin "Woody" Elwood James, 73, of Columbia Avenue, Bolivar, died Monday, June 9, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.
Born July 3, 1923, in Millville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Mollie Mae Dennison James.
He retired as a mechanic with J.&L. Steel Corp. after 32 years at the Blair Plant. He also was employed for several years at Shenandoah Quarry, Millville.
He was a member of Middleway International Pentecostal Church of Christ at Middleway, W.Va.
He also was a member of Shenandoah Lanes Senior Citizens League, Charles Town, W.Va.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Evelyn DeHaven James; three daughters, Patsy Morgan-Runkles of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Nancy McKenzie and Carolyn McKenzie, both of Charles Town; two sons, Frank J. James of Bolivar and Terry Lee James Sr. of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Blanche Jones of Bolivar, Leona Baugher of Frederick, Md., and Naomi Tribby of Harpers Ferry; one brother Norman W. James of Harpers Ferry; and six grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home in Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Franklin E. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Lutheran Cemetery in Bolivar.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

William F. Stanley
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - William Frederick "Bill" Stanley, 77, of 943 Park St., Waynesboro, died Monday, June 9, 1997, at his home.
Born Oct. 19, 1919, in Easton, Md., he was the son of the late Harry C. and Ruth M. Happel Stanley.
He graduated from Thurmont High School in 1938.
He was employed at Landis Tool Co., retiring in January 1983.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942 until 1945.
He was a member of Otterbein United Brethren in Christ Church in Waynesboro where he was a deacon, an elder, a Sunday school teacher and on the board of trustees.
He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15 in Waynesboro and National AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Maxine Diller Stanley, whom he married Dec. 2, 1944; one son, Thomas C. Stanley of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Frances S. Trembath of Wilmington, Del., and Virginia S. Mentzer, of Quincy, Pa.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Harry C. Stanley Jr.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Otterbein United Brethren in Christ Church, 801 Park St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Wilber L. Sites will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

V. Nelson Robinson
BRADENTON, Fla. - Virgil Nelson "Robbie" Robinson, 84, of Bradenton, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, at The Shores Health Center, Bradenton.
Born Oct. 8, 1912, in Bybee, Ky., near Richmond, Ky., he was the son of the late James R. and Mary Lois Martin Robinson.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise W. Robinson.
He was a mathematics professor at the Naval Academy for 39 years, and was scheduling officer and diving coach at the academy. He competed in the 1932 Olympic swimming trials.
He was a retired captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served in the Pacific Theater.
He is survived by his wife, Marie C. Robinson; one son, J. Russell Robinson II of Hagerstown; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Lieberman of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mary Constiner of Tallahassee, Fla.; one stepson J. Douglass Constiner of Cleveland; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son N. Terrell Robinson.
Services were held Monday, June 9, at Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, 3904 Cortez Road, West Bradenton, Fla. Edwin Bell officiated.

Paul M. Jones, Sr.
MARTINSBURG, W. Va. - Paul Matthew Jones Sr., 67, of Route 5, Martinsburg, died Monday, June 9, 1997, at his home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.
Born Jan. 21, 1930, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary Vance Jones.
He was employed for 20 years at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Building Management Service.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served in World War II.
He was a life member of Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Connie L. Barthlow Jones; two daughters Joyce Ann Imbach, and Barbara G. Voorhees, both of Martinsburg; two sons Paul M. Jones Jr., of Florida and Jeffrey T. Jones of Hedgesville, W.Va.; five sisters, Helen High and Jeanie High, both of Marlowe, W.Va., Edith Shepherd of Martinsburg, Ellen Mathis of West Friendship, Md., and Sue Spinks of Sykesville, Md.; four brothers, James L. Jones and Roy T. Jones, both of Martinsburg, Harold Jones of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Richard Jones of West Friendship; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Strider and Dorothy McDonald; and three brothers, Robert Jones, Carl Jones and William Vance.
Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 Williams St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Harold Jones Jr. and the Rev. Thomas Tennis will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens with military graveside services conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sarah L. Fowler
Sarah L. Fowler, 80, formerly of 628 George St., Hagerstown died Monday, June 9, 1997, at Washington County Hospital. She had been a resident of Williamsport Nursing Home in Williamsport.
Born Jan. 27, 1917, in Atlanta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late William Harrison and Mary Powell Meeks.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin George Fowler Jr.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at Williamsport Nursing Home. Chaplain Josephine Benton will officiate. Burial was held in Meadowridge Memorial Park in Baltimore, on Wednesday June 11.

Gale C. Kayser Sr.
MAUGANSVILLE - Gale Charles Kayser Sr., 83, of 13825 Village Mill Drive, Maugansville, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 19, 1913, in Big Spring, he was the son of the late Thomas L. and Bessie Irvin Kayser.
He was a farmer for years and retired in 1976 from the Washington County Board of Education as a manager in maintenance.
He was a member of Antrim Assembly of God Church in Greencastle, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Shipp Kayser; one son, Gale Charles "Skip" Kayser Jr. of State Line, Pa.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Blaine Kayser, Lester Kayser, Jacob Kayser and John Kayser; and one stepson, Robert A. Poole.
Services will be held Thursday, at 2 p.m. at Antrim Assembly of God Church, 11192 Bemisderfer Road, Greencastle, Pa. The Rev. Rodger Berkey and the Rev. Richard Mose will officiate. Burial will be in Welsh Run Cemetery, Mercersburg, Pa.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. through 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Maryland, 1107 Kenilworth Drive, Baltimore, Md. 21204.
