SYKESVILLE, Md. - Henrietta Jeanine Gilkerson, 61, of Sykesville Elder Care Center, 7309 2nd Ave., died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at Carroll County General Hospital, Westminster, Md.
Born June 12, 1935, in Sharpsburg, she was the daughter of the late Ronald Ralph and Mary Elizabeth Bender Schroder.
She was a member of St. Davis Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C.
She is survived by three sisters, Carline Hough of Upper Marlboro, Md., Edith A. Painter of Boonsboro and Glenda J. Schroder of Washington, D.C.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Juanita V. Vercelli.
Graveside services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mt. View Cemetery, Sharpsburg. The Rev. Anne Weatherholt will officiate.
Arrangements are by Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport.

Michele Chaney
Michele Chaney, 39, of 1370 Marshall St., Hagerstown, died Monday, June 9, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 30, 1958, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Carrie I. Willire Chaney Karukas of Abingdon, Md., and the late Walton G. Chaney.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by sisters and brothers, Linda Duguid, Brenda Vogel, Sharon Tummello, Barry Chaney and Gary Chaney.
Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Chapel at Meadowridge Memorial Park, Baltimore. Services will be conducted by the Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Potomac Center, Hagerstown.

Adora M.R. Payne
OAKLAND, Calif. - Adora Mae Robinson Payne, 96, of Oakland, and formerly of Ranson, W.Va., died Saturday, June 7, 1997, in Oakland.
Born Sept. 16, 1900, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late David Henry and Sallie Banks Robinson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Payne.
She was a teacher in West Virginia and Virginia public schools.
She is survived by one daughter, Antoinette Hewlett of Oakland; and one granddaughter, Adora Matthews of Florence, S.C.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lois Payne.
Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Martin and Charles streets, Martinsburg. The Rev. Alfred E. Statesman will officiate. Burial will be in Douglas Grove Cemetery, Berkeley County, W.Va.
The family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Bettye B. Blatchley
Bettye B. Blatchley, 65, of 18918 Rolling Road, Hagerstown, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born in Birmingham, Ala., she was the daughter of the late John and Frances Pitts Bryan.
She was a member of Fountain Head Country Club.
She was one of the original volunteers in Hagerstown with CLUE, a Johns Hopkins Project.
She was a gardener.
She is survived by her husband, Robert H. Blatchley; one daughter, Barbara Eagles of Wrightsville Beach, N.C.; and one son, Robert B. Blatchley of Wrightsville Beach.
The family will receive friends at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, today from 6 to 7 p.m.

Charles L. Fisher Jr.
Charles Lester Fisher, Jr., 57, of 11804 Bradford Drive, Hagerstown, died Monday, June 9, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 31, 1939, in Decatur, Ill., he was the son of the late Charles Lester Fisher and Alpha Jenkins Fisher Lammy.
He was a 1962 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. He received his master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois.
He retired from Citicorp in 1991.
He retired from the U.S. Army in 1984 after 22 years of service. He served in the Signal Corps in Korea, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Vietnam and Japan. His last assignment was as assistant inspector general at Fort Ritchie. He received the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and Parachutist Badge.
He was a member of Upper Potomac Chapter, Retired Officers Association, serving as both president and secretary, and was on the board of directors.
He was a member of the Association of Graduates of U.S. Military Academy at West Point; the Army Athletic Association; American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42 of Hagerstown; BPO Elks 378; Beaver Creek Country Club Seniors (Golf); and the Advisory Board of Multiple Sclerosis, Washington County Chapter. He was co-chairman of the Multiple Sclerosis Self-Help Support Group; Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Illinois; Kedron Lodge No. 340 in Mount Auburn, Ill.; a volunteer with the American Red Cross; and the University of Illinois Alulmni Association.
He is survived by his wife, Roseann Warnick Fisher; one daughter, Marith Fisher of Rockville, Md.; one son, Sean Fisher of Topeka, Kan.; one sister Margaret Silver of Decatur, and one granddaughter.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Otterbein United Methodist Church. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., Monday at 11 a.m.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Elks Lodge 378 will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m today at the funeral home.

J. Raymond Brant
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Rev. J. Raymond Brant, 80, of 1823 Edgar Ave., Chambersburg, died Monday, June 9, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born May 5, 1917, in Antrim Township, Pa., he was the son of the late John L. and Mary Shinham Brant.
He was a 1935 graduate of Greencastle High School and attended Waynesboro Business School. He attended Huntington College, Huntington, Ind., and Messiah College in Grantham, Pa.
He received his license to preach on Sept. 3, 1952, and was ordained on Aug. 25, 1961. He was pastor in the Penn Mar, Mongul and Lurgan Circuit, Mt. Olivet of Adams County, Pa., Mainsville and Cold Springs Circuit, Mt. Olivet in Virginia, St. James near Chambersburg and served for six years as chaplain at Piney Mountain near Fayetteville, Pa.
He was a member of the United Brethren in Christ Church Conference and was a member of the St. James United Brethren in Christ Church near Chambersburg.
He attended the Elder Day Care Center at Menno-Haven.
He is survived by his wife Dorotha M. Shaffer Brant whom he married March 15, 1941; two daughters, Evelyn L. Starliper of Chambersburg, and Gladys E. Erdmann of Arvada, Colo.; one son Leslie W. Brant of York, Pa.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Joel Christman, the Rev. Donald Bender and the Rev. David Rawley will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kenneth B. Oyler
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Kenneth Baxter "Ken" Oyler, 82, of 340 Overhill Drive, Chambersburg, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, in Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg.
Born March 26, 1915, in Quincy, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry S. and Rosa M. Baxter Oyler.
He graduated from Quincy High School in 1932, then took correspondence courses pertaining to construction.
He was employed as a sales manager for the former Good Lumber Co. in Quincy for 38 years. Prior to retiring in 1986, he also worked for several other businesses in the area and designed houses and other buildings in Franklin County.
He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Chambersburg, where he served four terms as deacon and three terms as elder.
He was a charter and life member of Franklin County Planning Commission, and a member of Franklin County Builders Association. He was former director of Building and Grounds at Kittochtinny Historical Society, Chambersburg, and Hoffman Homes for Youths in Littlestown.
He was building supervisor at the Franklin County Visitors Center and was a member of Kittochtinny Historical Society, BPO Elks Lodge 600, both of Chambersburg, the South Mountain Golf Club, and the local and national AARP. He was a golfer.
He is survived by his wife, Janet C. Stouffer Oyler, whom he married June 18, 1936; one sister Evelyn Rice of Quincy; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. John's United Church of Christ, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg. The Rev. Stephen Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
There will be no public viewing.

Vallie M. Bowers
FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Vallie Mae Bowers, 82, of Route 4, Falling Waters, died Wednesday, June 11, 1997, in City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Sept. 30, 1914, in Staunton, Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lottie Mae Maybush Bartley.
She was a member of Little Falls Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Fred A. Bowers; two daughters, Donna Reynolds and Patricia Caldwell, both of Falling Waters; two sisters, Dorothy Foster of Falling Waters, and Rosalie Perrell of Marlowe, W.Va.; one brother, Bruce Bartley of Martinsburg; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by twin daughters.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Little Falls Presbyterian Church, Falling Waters. The Rev. Lon Snelson will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg.

Ralph L. Whitmore
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Ralph Lindbergh "Buzzy" Whitmore, 70, of Charles Town, died Wednesday, June 11, 1997, at University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va.
Born Dec. 22, 1926, in Ranson, W.Va., he was the son of the late William C. Whitmore and Bertus Alberta Brown Whitmore.
He was a graduate of Charles Town High School, Charles Town.
He was employed at Ayer Corp. in Annapolis Junction, Md., for 20 years, and at Charles Town Police Department for 20 years. He was police chief for several years.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean War.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was a member of VFW Memorial Post 3522 of Charles Town; and the Fraternal Order of Police.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ellen E. "Vanny" Ambrose Whitmore; two daughters, Deborah R. Fadeley of Bolivar, W.Va., and Carrie A. Showen of Charles Town; two sons, Ralph H. "Skip" Whitmore of Knoxville, Md., and Dewey A. Whitmore of Hedgesville, W.Va.; three brothers Abner Whitmore, Leonard Whitmore and Howard Whitmore, all of Charles Town; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Edith Dunn, Anna Minnich, Mary Ballenger, Ruth Friedich and Geraldine Plum; and two brothers Robert W. Whitmore and William Whitmore.
Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. James Chambly will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery.

William H. MacMullen
FREDERICK, Md. - William Holt "Bill" MacMullen, 72, of 811 Montclaire Ave., Frederick, died Wednesday, June 11, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 25, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Ross Albert and Annie Laurie Holt MacMullen.
He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Kentucky.
He retired in 1990 from Potomac Edison Co. after 39 years with the Hagerstown and Frederick offices.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Frederick.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Annie Louise Metz MacMullen; two daughters, Susan Ann MacMullen and Betsy MacMullen, both of Frederick; one son, Robert Allan MacMullen of Monterey, Calif.; two sisters Norma Lord of Marblehead, Mass., and Jean Putzier of Boulder, Colo.; and one grandson.
Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

LADY LAKE, Fla. - Floyd House Hightman Jr., 72, of Villages of Lake Sumter, died Monday, June 9, 1997, at Sevier Medical Center, Sevierville, Tenn.
Born March 22, 1925, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Floyd H. and Anna Pauline Beachley Hightman Sr.
He was employed by People's Life Insurance Co. in Hagerstown and later was district manager in Wilmington, Del., retiring in 1987.
A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, he served during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Elaine Boward Hightman; two daughters, Mary Miller of Columbia, Md., and Cheryl Kelly of Wilmington; four sons, Gregory Hightman of Lady Lake, Mark Cox of Wilmington, Daniel Hightman of Smyrna, Del., and Rodney Hightman of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; one brother, Richard L. Hightman of York, Pa.; seven grandchildren; one niece; and three nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jack Fullen will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Born Nov. 22, 1902, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Daisy B. Bonner Bazel.
She was a former employee of Moller Organ Co.
She was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce H. Heck; three sons, David L. Heck and Richard L. Heck, both of Hagerstown, and Gerald W. Heck of Middletown, Md.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond Lytle will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
Visitation will be at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Sylvia Meria James, 53, of Route 2, Harpers Ferry, died Wednesday, June 11, 1997, at her home.
Born May 4, 1944, in Tazewell, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Rebecca Mabe Gilley.
She was a member of Mannings Assembly of God Church in Harpers Ferry, and was a Sunday school teacher.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph S. James; one daughter, Melissa Shifflett of Winchester, Va.; two sons, Randall A. James of Harpers Ferry and Donald L. James of Charles Town; four sisters, Evelyn Gilley of New Mexico, Carolyn Remines of Willington, Ohio, Christine Frye of Charles Town and Lorraine Dickens of Bluefield, Va.; three brothers, McKinley Gilley of Pennsylvania, Roger Gilley of Manassas, Va., and Darrell Gilley of Bluemont, Va.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at noon at Mannings Assembly of God Church. Pastor James R.T. Boyce will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

Joseph A. Marschner
Joseph Ardeth Marschner, 67, of 555 Highland Way, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, at his home.
Born March 9, 1930, in Brunswick, Md., he was the son of the late Francis and Marcelle Kotz Marschner.
He was a graduate of St. Bernard's Grammar School in Baltimore, Loyola High School in Baltimore and Towson State Teacher's College, Towson, Md.
He was a teacher at Career Studies Center.
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he served during the Korean War.
He was a member of American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42; Marine Corps League Bulldog Detachment; and Marine Corps Association. He was a life member of Washington County Historical Society and a charter member of National Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy H. Marschner; four sons, F. Erich Marschner of Ellicott City, Md., and P. Christoph Marschner, M. Gregory Marschner and Joseph Anthony Marschner, all of Hagerstown; one sister, Norma Widerman of Baltimore; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Charles Holder will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. Military graveside services will be conducted by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.
The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, today, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Harold J. Benchoff
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Harold J. Benchoff, 70, of 2783 Buchanan Trail West, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, at his home.
Born Nov. 2, 1926, in Antrim Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry and Viola Crist Benchoff.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen L. Smith Benchoff, in 1994.
He graduated from the police academy and was constable in Antrim Township for 10 years.
He was employed for 20 years at the Greencastle Police Department, serving from December 1972 until retiring as police chief in February 1992. Earlier, he worked at Landis Machine Co. in Waynesboro.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II.
He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greencastle.
He was a life member of Rescue Hose Co. No. 1 of Greencastle; life member of Fraternal Order of Police Tri-County Lodge 76; life member of Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 6319 of Greencastle; member of Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373; and National AARP.
He is survived by one daughter, Bunny L. Manahan of Waynesboro, Pa.; one son, Troy H. Benchoff of Lancaster, Pa.; three sisters, Helen Murtoff of Gettysburg, Pa., Mary Johnson, of Franklin County Nursing Home in Chambersburg, and Jean Swisher of Greencastle; two brothers, Henry Benchoff and Fred Benchoff, both of Greencastle; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Donald M. Bohn will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

GREENVILLAGE, Pa. - Frances E. Winger Forney, 65, of Greenvillage, died Wednesday June 11, 1997, at her home.
Born Dec. 11, 1931, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank H. and Ruth R. Roth Winger.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Forney, on June 7, 1995.
She was a 1949 graduate of Greencastle High School.
She was a homemaker. She previously worked at the former Stanley Co. in Chambersburg, Franklin County Library, Grandview Elementary School Cafeteria and at the Scotland School for Veterans Children.
She was a member of the Greencastle Church of the Brethren.
She was a member of Chambersburg Area Council of Republican Women, and a member of the National AARP.
She is survived by three daughters, Jean Bartley of Cleveland, Ohio, Diane Hollenbaugh of Fayetteville, Pa., and Susan L. Forney of Chambersburg; two sons, James R. Forney and Donald S. Forney, both of Greencastle; one sister, Anna K. Winger of Battle Creek, Mich.; and 10 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandson.
Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. David G. Rawley will officiate. Burial will be in Browns Mill Cemetery in Kauffman, Pa.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond Lytle will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
Visitation will be at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Brandon C. Sisk
Brandon Cruz Sisk, infant son of Robert Carroll and Lisa Marie Obitts Sisk of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, June 11, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Delores J. "Pete" Myers of Hagerstown; paternal grandparents, Jerry L. and Linda M. Weddle of Thurmont, Md., and Roy A. Sisk of Hagerstown; maternal great-grandmother, Betsy L. Socks of Hagerstown; paternal great-grandparents, Carroll V. and Lucetta B. Marquart of Hagerstown; paternal great-grandmother, Marilyn Sisk of Hagerstown; aunts and uncles.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family Friday at Greenlawn Cemetery, Williamsport. The Rev. John B. Mills will officiate.
There will be no viewing.
Arrangements are by Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Vesta J. Boyd
CLEAR SPRING - Vesta J. Boyd, 87, of 12229 Boyd Road, died Wednesday, June 11, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Feb. 11, 1910, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edlen Boyd and Florence Viola Gossard Boyd.
She was a retired registered nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, with 45 years of service.
She was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served with the 118th General Hospital as a nurse during World War II.
She was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Church, Clear Spring.
She was a life member of Disabled American Veterans.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel D. Boyd.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Steven Amundson will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Church Cemetery, Clear Spring.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, c/o Blaine Mills, 12 S. Martin St., Clear Spring, Md. 21722.
