CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Louise N. Johnston, 96, formerly of McConnellsburg, Pa., died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at Menno Haven Nursing Home, Chambersburg.
Born Sept. 5, 1900, she was a daughter of the late David Alexander and Katie Hull Nelson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph W. Johnston, whom she married in 1923.
She attended Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pa.
She was a cafeteria worker in McConnellsburg School District. She previously was employed by Ayr Township as a teacher and worked at Letterkenny Army Depot during World War II.
She was a lifelong member of McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church.
She was active in the Fulton County Fair and the Grange, Fulton County.
She is survived by two nieces; four nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Trent Hancock and the Rev. Angela Hancock will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg.
Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service.

Robert H.W. Saltsman
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Robert Hancock Wood Saltsman, 78, of Clearwater, and formerly of Hedgesville, W.Va., died Sunday, June 8, 1997, in Clearwater.
Born Feb. 11, 1919, in Charlottesville, Va., he was the son of the late Samuel Atherton and Elizabeth W. Wood Saltsman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mary Armes Saltsman.
He was a graduate of West Nottingham High School and Davidson College, North Carolina.
He retired as a paint salesman for Baltimore Paint & Chemical. He previously was employed with National Lead Co.
He was a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He completed 25 missions as a B-12 navigator and was a 351st bomb group captain.
He was a member of Catonsville Presbyterian Church, Catonsville, Md., and Hedges Chapel, Hedgesville.
He was a member of American Legion Alderton Dawson Post 60, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; and Masons, Catonsville.
He is survived by a daughter, Gail Robbins of Clearwater; a son, Thomas Cooper of Oveido, Fla.; a sister, Isabel Coode of Simpsonville, S.C.; a brother, Samuel Saltsman of Maryland Line, Md.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Hedges Chapel, west of Hedgesville. The Rev. Jim Tindall will officiate. Burial will be Saturday at 3 p.m. in Riverview Cemetery, Charlottesville.
The family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
The casket will be taken to the church one hour prior to services on Saturday.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Edna Jane Southard Henley, 79, of Charles Town, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at Oak Hill Health Care Center, Staunton, Va.
Born June 17, 1918, in Leetown, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Fred and Josie Cave Southard.
She retired from Perfection Garment Factory, Martinsburg, W.Va. She previously was employed by YMCA, Brunswick, Md.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by one daughter, Ruby J. Cooper of Stuarts Draft, Va.; one son, Fred Nunz of Platteville, Colo.; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, David Nunz; two sisters, Pauline Compher and Mae Brookman; and two brothers, Thomas Southard and Fred Southard.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. Robert R. Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Eleanor L. Schmuck, 83, of 1236 Sollenberger Road, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at her home.
Born Nov. 24, 1913, in East Berlin, York County, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Harry and Anna Fidler Miller.
She was a graduate of William Penn High School, York, Pa.
She was employed as a secretary by First United Methodist Church, Mechanicsburg, Pa. She previously was employed by the former Feller's Clothing Store, York.
She was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Chambersburg.
She was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Chambersburg; and at Bible Release Time of Camp Joy-El, Chambersburg. She also assisted her husband with church ministry while he was a pastor.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, the Rev. Miller S. Schmuck; two daughters, Reitta M. Schreck of Glen Burnie, Md., and Roberta E. Veninger of Indianapolis; four sons, David W. Schmuck of Mechanicsburg, Dwight M. Schmuck of Chambersburg, Keith J. Schmuck of Manchester, Pa., and Robert A. Schmuck of Greenwood, Mo.; one sister, Reitta M. Miller of New Oxford, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 125 Park Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Frank O. Monroe, the Rev. David W. Schmuck and the Rev. Keith J. Schmuck will officiate. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, York.
There will be no viewing; however, the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Born March 30, 1918, in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Theodore and Margie Lovett.
She retired from Chambersburg School District. She previously was employed in the cafeteria of Chambersburg Hospital.
She was a member of John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church, Chambersburg. She was a member of the church choir and served on Stewardess Board.
She was a volunteer at Chambersburg Hospital.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Walter O. Keith; one daughter, Verdella E. Reaid of Chambersburg; three sons, Walter T. Keith Jr., Eugene A. Keith and Ronald F. Keith, all of Chambersburg; three sisters, Janet Thorton, Dorothy Stoner and Arlette Harper, all of Chambersburg; one brother, Calvin Lovett of Gettysburg, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

Edna Louise Burns, 69, of Hagerstown, died Monday, June 16, 1997, at Western Maryland Hospital Center.
Born July 28, 1927, in Hagerstown, she was a daughter of the late Clinton and Louise Sims Beckett.

She was employed by The Women's Club for 40 years.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She was an honorary member of The Women's Club.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Warren J. Burns; one daughter, Bethel Burns of Kearneysville, W.Va.; three sons, Douglass L. Burns of Worcester, Mass., and Herscel X. Burns and Warren A. Burns, both of Hagerstown; one sister, Edith D. Becks of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Edward Burns; and one brother, Ralph N. Beckett.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Robert Edward Richardson, 84, of 27 W. Second St., died Wednesday, June 18, 1997, in Washington County Hospital.
Born May 10, 1913, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Armer Williams and Bertha Grace Kugler Richardson.
He was employed by Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro, for more than 35 years. He was previously employed by Arthur's Dairy, Waynesboro.
He served in the U.S. Navy SeaBees during World War II and the Korean War, serving in the South Pacific and Washington.
He was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren; and he was a leader of its Explorers Post.
He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15; Eagles Club, Inc.; William Max McLaughlin Veterans of Foreign Wars 695; Mechanics Steam Fire Engine and Hose Co., Waynesboro; Waynesboro Fish and Game Assoc.; National A.A.R.P.; and Fairfield AMVETS Post 172, Fairfield, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha L. Poper Richardson, whom he married Dec. 31, 1932; one son, A. Eugene Richardson of Waynesboro; three sisters, Lillian Hissong, Jane Cline, and Alice Shade, all of Waynesboro; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Branthaver and Arvella Shilling; and one brother, Oren Richardson.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W. Va. - Thomas Edward Shufflebarger Jr., 78, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997, at his home.
Born Aug. 15, 1918, in Christiansburg, Va., he was the son of the late Thomas Edwin Sr. and Mary Walton Craig Shufflebarger.
He attended Virginia Tech, earning an undergraduate degree in mining geology and a master's degree in geology.
He was a registered professional geologist. He was previously employed by American Cyanamid Co., Hercules Powder Co., Southern Railway System and Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corp., Berkeley Springs.
He was a Morgan County Commissioner for 11 years, and commission president for three years. He was associated with the Morgan County Commission on Aging and the Region 9 Planning and Development Council.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II with the 44th Bomber Squadron.
He was a senior fellow in the Society of Economic Geologists; and a member of the Society of Mining Engineers, a member of the Geological Society of America; Society of Mining Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, Geological Society of America, Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, Berkeley Springs; McDaniel Lodge 86, A.F.&A.M., Christiansburg; Junior Order of United American Mechanics, Council 117, Berkeley Springs; and Pennsylvania German Society.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Martha Jo Haynes Shufflebarger; three sons, Thomas E. Shufflebarger III of Coral Springs, Fla., William M. Shufflebarger of Carlisle, Pa., and John V. Shufflebarger of Westboro, Mass.; three sisters, Sallie C. Bromm of Somerset, Va., A. Elizabeth Klawitter of Reading, Pa., and Frances E. Tate of Blacksburg, Va.; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Virginia Shufflebarger.

He was born Sept. 15, 1942, in Hagerstown.
He was employed for 37 years by Noland Co., retiring as vice president of marketing. He also retired from Dominion Pipe and Supply Co., Richmond.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge 84, Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda Joyce Brewer; three sons, Patrick Lowell Brewer of Richmond, Va., and Michael Glenn Brewer and Curtis Lee Brewer, both of Newport News; a sister, Evelyn Grimm of Hagerstown; a brother, Charles Brewer of Hagerstown; and three grandsons.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eric Scott Brewer.

He was the owner and operator of Sr. Roudabousch, Inc., a cabinet-making business.

Born July 21, 1923, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late William F. Sr. and Leona May Boward Harrison.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Jeannette Long Harrison.
He retired as a self-employed pest control person.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in France and Central Europe. He received a Purple Heart.
He is survived by four sons, Curtis Wayne Harrison, Williams Douglas Harrison, Dennis Ray Harrison and Darren Lee Harrison, all of Charles Town; one sister, Wanda L. Files of Martinsburg; two brothers, Donald S. Harrison and Robert C. Harrison, both of Martinsburg; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth L. Doss and Corrine M. Keller; and one brother, Raymond E. Harrison.

He retired from Veterans Affairs Medical Center with 30 years of service.
He served with the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Westview Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lena Smeltzer Stout; one daughter, Deborah Tucker, at home; one brother, David Stout of Charles Town, W.Va.; two sisters, Lillian Myers and Margaret Fellers, both of Martinsburg; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Crabill, Lena Butts and Ann Stout; and three brothers, Richard Stout, James Stout and Charles F. Stout.
Services will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel in Martinsburg. The Rev. Johnny Kelly and the Rev. Malcolm Cadd will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Hilda E.S.N. Stone
FAIRPLAY - Hilda Edna Smith Nichols Stone, 50, of 7828 Abbott Drive, died Thursday, June 19, 1997, at her home.
Born Oct. 15, 1946, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Gertrude Blanche Snyder Smith.
She was previously employed with Direct Mail Processors in Hagerstown.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Stone Jr.; two daughters, Loretta Harmon of Fairplay, and Vicky Nichols of Hagerstown; five sisters, twin sister Janet Conley, Ruth Ashkettle, Helen Nalley, Wanda Henson, and Betty Baltimore, all of Hagerstown; three brothers, Roger Smith Sr., Hugh Smith and Richard Smith, all of Hagerstown; one stepdaughter; one stepson; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. A. Paul Harne will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Hilda M. Baker
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Hilda M. Baker, 83, of 200 N. Main St., formerly of Edenville, Pa., died Wednesday, June 18, 1997, at ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg.
Born Sept. 10, 1913, in Spring Run, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Blaine Dunkle and Myrtle Price Dunkle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin C. Baker.
She was a 1930 graduate of Dry Run High School, Dry Run, Pa.
She was co-owner of Baker's General Merchandise Store, Edenville.
She was member of Edenville United Methodist Church, Chambersburg.
She was member of Ladies Aid Society and AARP.
She is survived by one son, Larry E. Baker of La Plata, Md.; and one granddaughter, Betsy B. DeLong of Alexandria, Va.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Edenville United Methodist Church, 2504 Apple Way, Edenville, Pa. The Rev. Kenneth E. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Edenville United Methodist Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

James Richard Schultz Jr., 23, of Hagerstown, who died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, is survived by a sister, Michelle Schultz Magaha of Hagerstown.
Patrick G. Schmidt
FREDERICK, Md. - Patrick George Schmidt, 48, of Ivy Way, Frederick, formerly of Massachusetts, died Wednesday, June 18, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 14, 1948, in Syracuse, N.Y., he was the son of George William and Barbara Ann Tighe Schmidt, both of Martinsburg, W.Va.
Trained as a speech therapist, he was employed by hospitals and school districts in Massachusetts. He also served on a Massachusetts state board affiliated with his work and worked with the mentally retarded and HIV patients.
He was member of St. Timothy's Catholic Church, Walkersville, Md.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Adam Patrick Schmidt of Massachusetts; one sister, Vivian Gilleo of Arlington, Va.; nieces and nephews; five aunts; and three uncles.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Patrick and Mary Josephine Wright Tighe and George and Loretta M. Schmidt.
Memorial Mass will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville. Father Richard Murphy will celebrate mass.
