Edwin J. LeBrun
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Edwin J. LeBrun, 87, of Menno-Haven Nursing Home, Chambersburg, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at the home.
Born March 3, 1910, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Edwin T. and Sarah "Sadie" Smith LeBrun.
He was a graduate of Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore. He earned an AA degree from Dundalk Community College after he retired.
He was employed by Bethlehem Steel Ship Building in Sparrows Point, Md., as supervisor of training for 42 years, retiring in 1972.
He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg and a former member of St. Michael's The Archangel Catholic Church in Overlea, Md., and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a member of Baltimore Yacht Club and the Sparrows Point Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Anna L. Frank LeBrun, whom he married on July 2, 1934.
Graveside services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Moreland Memorial Cemetery, 2901 Taylor Ave., Parkville, Md. The Rev. James Purvey will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

Fadhil H. Khattat
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Fadhil H. Khattat, 73, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at his home.
Born Oct. 11, 1923, in Baghdad, Iraq, he was the son of the late Majeed and Om Al-Chalabi.
He was a 1953 graduate of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. He received a degree from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, England. He earned a diploma in malaria epidemiology from the University of Amsterdam, Holland.
He was a specialist in tropical medicine and diseases for the World Health Organization, East Africa. In 1965, he and his wife immigrated from England to United States, where he worked as a bioenvironmental analyst he for Science and Information Exchange, a branch of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. He worked as an ecologist for Fuel Supply Center, Defense Logistics Agency, Alexandria, Va. His last assignment was with the Department of Interior as a natural resource specialist. Upon retirement, he started his own business.
He was member of Trinity Moravian Church, New Carrollton, Md.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Trude Spittler Khattat; two sisters, Samira and Kamila, both of Baghdad, Iraq; and three brothers, Kamal, Majeed and Muwafag Hameed Majeed, all of Baghdad, Iraq.
Services will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Rosedale Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Sutor will officiate.
There will be no visitation.

Roger K. Monn
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Roger K. Monn, 77, of 519 Hollywell Ave., died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Feb. 20, 1920, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Norman S. and Elven A. Over Monn.
He attended Clay Hill School in Kauffman, Pa.
He was a custodian for the Chambersburg Area School District for 27 years, retiring in 1985.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the European and Pacific theaters. He attained the rank of sergeant.
He served four years in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He was a member of Church of the Brethren, 260 S. Fourth St., Chambersburg.
He was a founder and member of AFSCME Local 2935, a life member of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, and a member of Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46.
He is survived by his wife, Esther "Gale" Bowser Monn, whom he married May 7, 1966; four daughters, Bonita L. Barnhart of Fort Loudon, Pa., Lynn J. Hamsher of Fayetteville, Pa., Robin L. Monn-Aubert of New York City, and Cindy L. Martin of Chambersburg; one son, Dave Highlands of Chambersburg; one sister, Genevieve McCurdy of Chambersburg; one brother, John Monn of Butler, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Church of the Brethren, 260 S. Fourth St., Chambersburg. The Rev. Kenneth L. Gibble will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery in Chambersburg, with military graveside services conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW.
A viewing will be held at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., and at Church of the Brethren, 260 S. Fourth St., Chambersburg, one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Joe Patterson
Joe Patterson, 85, of 129 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at his home.
Born Dec. 20, 1911, in Belzoni, Miss., he was the son of the late William and Olive Brown Patterson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cara T. Patterson, in 1993.
He retired from Republic Street in Warren, Ohio, after 20 years of service.
He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Warren.
He is survived by four daughters, Gloria A. Earnest, Pauline M. Mumford, Debra A. Clayborn and Penny L. Clayborn, all of Hagerstown; one sister, Annie Nash of Cleveland; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary A. Clayborn; two sisters and three brothers.
Services will be Monday at Friendship Baptist Church, 1954 Brier St. S.E., Warren. The Rev. Edgar Fisher will officiate.
There will be no viewing or visitation.

Gladys V. Houser
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Gladys Virginia Houser, 71, of Charles Town, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.
Born April 22, 1926, in Queenstown, Md., she was a daughter of the late John Parker and Louise Anna Herman Arrington.
She was a 1945 graduate of Martinsburg High School, Martinsburg, W.Va., and a 1948 graduate of City Hospital School of Nursing, Martinsburg. She attended Baltimore City Hospital Nursing School, Baltimore, and West Virginia University classes.
She was employed as registered nurse for 45 years by Old Charles Town General Hospital, Charles Town; Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg; Chit-Chat Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center, Winchester, Va.; and Jefferson Memorial Hospital.
She was member Asbury United Methodist Church, Charles Town.
She helped to set up the first intensive cardiac care unit at Jefferson Memorial Hospital; was the attending nurse at Jefferson County Arts and Crafts Festival; attending nurse at Charles Town Charities Golf Classic; and a member West Virginia District 6 Nurses Association.
She is survived by her husband, Ernst Houser Jr., whom she married Aug. 11, 1951; three sisters, Mary Elizabeth Gregory of Baltimore, Betty Lee Frances Kastner of Johns Island, S.C., and Nellie Louise Fouch of Martinsburg; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, Charles Town. The Rev. James Chambly and the Rev. Wyman Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.
Visitation will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at church.
Dorothy Alverda Grubbs
Dorothy Alverda Grubbs, 75, of 17604 Forest Glen Circle, Hagerstown, died Monday, June 23, 1997, at her home.
Born June 5, 1922, in Charles Town, W.Va., she was the daughter of Mary Susan Furtney Darr of Charles Town, and the late Henry Forrest Darr.
She retired from the Washington County Board of Education.
She was a member of Maranatha Brethren Church and the Beran Sunday School Class.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Stanley L. Grubbs Jr.; two daughters, Nancy Lee Jenkins of Smithsburg and Suellyn Cline of Hagerstown; two sisters, Norma Walthen of Frederick, Md., and Kathryn Petrucci of Charles Town; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jay Fretz will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family received friends at the funeral home Wednesday.

Claude W. Fogle Jr.
ANSTEAD, W.Va. - Claude William Fogle Jr., 57, formerly of Hagerstown and Frederick, Md., died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at his home.
Born June 19, 1940, in Frederick, he was a son of the late Claude W. Fogle Sr. and Nora M. Hurst Fogle Holt.
He was employed as an auto mechanic for most of his life.
He is survived by three daughters, Denise K. Williams of Plant City, Fla., Shari Lynn Fogle of Lakeland, Fla., and Dina Ping of Cincinnati, Ohio; one son, Claude W. Fogle III of Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Reatha Gue of Brunswick, Md., and Rosemary Hoffman of Frederick; two brothers, Roy Fogle of Milwaukee, Wis., and Charles Fogle of Frederick; one uncle; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Lillian Fogle; and one brother, George Fogle.
Graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Union Chapel Cemetery, Daysville Road, Daysville, Md. The Rev. Carroll A. Doggett Jr. will officiate.

Ray E. DeVault
Ray Edward "Bill" DeVault, 71, of 17543 York Road, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at his home.
Born July 6, 1925, in Maugansville, he was the son of the late Ray Clifton DeVault and Julia Carbaugh DeVault Kennedy.
He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.
He retired from Frederick Trading Co. in 1991. He previously was employed by Schindel and Rohr & Co. for 37 years.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He attended Christ Reformed Church, Hagerstown.
He was member of BPO Elks Lodge 378, Hagerstown; Funkstown American Legion Post 211; and was a former member of Waynesboro (Pa.) Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy J. DeVault at home; one daughter, Kristin L. DeVault of Hagerstown; two sons, Dirk DeVault of Hagerstown and Douglas DeVault of Burke, Va.; one sister, Beverly Downs of Fayetteville, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Lou Roddy.
Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Elvis J. Phillips
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Elvis J. Phillips, 28, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at his home.
Born July 12, 1968, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Jerome J. Phillips Sr. and Edna Virginia George Phillips. He was the stepson of Barbara Phillips-Kline of Hagerstown.
He was an activist of Broward County, Fla., and gained national acclaim for camping on a billboard for 29 days in May 1993. The effort raised $50,000 for AIDS research. He developed and organized the campaign for the service organization Center One/Anyone In Distress and American Red Cross, Fla.
He is survived by three sisters, Tammy Maus, Barby Phillips and Denia Phillips, all of Hagerstown; five brothers, Jerome J. Phillips Jr. of Elyria, Ohio, Kevin Phillips of Cumberland, Jerome J. Phillips III, Jeremy Phillips and Joshua Phillips, all of Hagerstown; maternal grandmother, Mary George of Ridgely, W.Va.; a paternal grandmother, Wanita Kendall of Elyria, Ohio; three aunts; and six uncles.
Services will be at Union Cemetery, Centerville, Pa. Memorial services will be in Fort Lauderdale.
Elvin S. Long Sr.
HANCOCK - Elvin S. "Toot" Long Sr., 74, of Hancock, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at College View Nursing Home, Frederick, Md.
Born Dec. 31, 1922, in Thurmont, Md., he was a son of the late Lowell Lee and Myrtle Ruth Wagner Long.
He retired as a carpenter from Potomac Construction Co. of Virginia in 1990.
He is survived by his longtime companion Frances Showe; ex-wife, Anna A. Long of Rocky Ridge, Md.; two daughters, Cheryl R. Long of Rocky Ridge and Bonnie G. Thompson of Frederick; one son, Elvin S. Long Jr. of Frederick.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Benjamin Long and Vernon Long.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Thurmont Funeral Home of Robert E. Dailey & Son, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, Md. The Rev. Larry Eby will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
