Dennis D. Arthur, 75, of Bancroft died November 21, 1999, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He was retired from Monsanto Chemical Co. with 34 years' service, was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Bancroft Church of God Mission.
Surviving: wife, Imogene “Fuzzy” Asbury Arthur; daughters, Pam Legg of Cross Lanes and Tracey Young of Hurricane; sons, Gary of Huntington and Dennis of Poca; sisters, Jane Kosa and Westine Sergent, both of Eleanor; brothers, Carl of Bancroft and Leon of Red House; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Service was held November 24, a1999 at Bancroft Church of God Mission with Pastor John Taylor officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Brian Arthur
Robert Brian Arthur, 30, of Culloden, formerly of Poca, died October 31, 1999, of injuries received in an automobile accident.
He was a five-year employee of Interstate Traffic Control, Nitro, a graduate of Poca High School, and a member of Rock Branch Independent Church, Nitro. He was a songwriter and musician and a member of Musicians Local 136.
Surviving: parents, Robert “Bunky” and Carolene Arthur of Winfield; brother, Matt Arthur of Bancroft; maternal grandmother, Evelyn Erlewine of Culloden; one niece; one nephew.
Service was held November 3, 1999 at Rock Branch Independent Church with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Brenda K. Atkinson
Brenda K. Hudnall Atkinson, 47, of Hometown died October 2, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital after a long illness.
She was a Christian and a former employee of Quality Care Nursing and Highland Hospital.
Surviving: husband, Archie Atkinson; sons, Steven “P.J.” Johnson of Chesapeake; daughter, Leah Johnson of Poca; stepfather and mother, Paul “Cuttie” and Ella Shamblin of Leon; brother, Ernest Hudnall of Davis Creek; two grandchildren.
Service was held October 6, 1999 at Mount Zion Church, Given, with the Rev. Jerry Ranson and the Rev. Joey Scarberry officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Lola Bennett Arthur
Lola M. Bennett Arthur, 91, of Poca died October 4, 1999, in Serenity Valley Nursing Home 2, St. Albans, after a long illness.
She was a former Putnam County schoolteacher and attended Black Betsy Community Church.
Surviving: daughter, Mauna Fae Warner of Grove City, Ohio; son, Opha R. Bennett of Liberty; stepdaughter, Roma Lee Harrison of Ripley; stepsons, Vermont and Ronald Arthur, both of Ripley, and Paul Arthur of Liberty; sisters, Hada Hartley of Red House, Grova Harrison of Winfield and Geraldine Ray of Dunbar; brother, Otis Cottrill of Hometown; 34 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held October 7, 1999 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Paul Arthur officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery, Given.

Dorothy Ann Alexander
Dorothy Ann Alexander, 85, of Hurricane, formerly of Nitro, died August 29, 1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a long illness.
She was retired from the accounting department of FMC and was a member of Gateway Church of Christ, St. Albans, and the White Shrine.
Surviving: several nieces and nephews.
Service was held September 1, 1999 at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Pastor George Erwin officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Ruth Catherine Adkins
Ruth Catherine Adkins, 78, of Scott Depot, formerly of Yawkey, died March 6, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Judson Baptist Church, Bills Creek, Winfield, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a choir member and on the Board of Christian Education, worked in the Bible school and belonged to American Baptist Women.
Surviving: daughter, Sharyn C. Brown of Scott Depot; sons, Larry Basil of Milton and Winton Guy of Winfield; sister, Doshia McClure of Griffithsville; two grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Herb Capehart and the Rev. Fred Sparks officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Memorial donations may be made to Judson Baptist Church, 1400 Bills Creek, Scott Depot WV 25560.

Elizabeth Allred
Elizabeth “Lisa” Allred, 36, of Fraziers Bottom died December 28, 1998, at home after a long illness.
She was a former employee of CAMC Homecare Services and a member of Assembly of God Church, St. Albans. She was a graduate of East Bank High School and Morris Harvey College nursing program.
Surviving: husband, Harry Lee Allred; daughter, Sarah Allred at home; parents, Roy and Maxine Akers of Chesapeake; brother, Roy Akers Jr. of Elkview; maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Gray of Ohley; paternal grandmother, Anna Akers of Ronda.
Service was held at Leonard Johnson Funeral Home, Marmet, with the Rev. Ron Crum officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Glicerio B. Abayon
Glicerio B. Abayon, 83, of Scott Depot died January 3, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
He was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church, Charleston, and a former businessman in the Philippines before moving to the United States in 1978.
Surviving: wife, Salud Castillo Abayon; daughters, Dr. Ladislawa A. Casto of Hurricane, Ardina A. Joshi of Los Angeles and Villie A. Patagoc of Scott Depot; son, Harlin C. Abayon of Manila, Philippines; 11 grandchildren.
Service and burial were in San Antonio, Northern Samar, Philippines. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of local arrangements.

Thelma Roach Alexander
Thelma Roach Alexander, 84, of Scott Depot died January 27, 1999 at the home of her caregiver, Jackie McCutcheon in Poca, after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cornerstone Bible Church, Scott Depot. She was a 45-year resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: daughter, Nancy R. White of Scott Depot; son, Philip W. Alexander of Charleston; sisters, Edith Hendricks of Whitesville and Theda Fletcher of Hurricane; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor David Cooper officiating. Burial was in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Mary W. Anderson
Mary Wilsie Anderson, 88, of Hurricane died February 1, 1999, in Sunrise Health Care after a long illness.
Surviving: sisters, Orpah Billups of Hurricane and Ruth Hodges of South Charleston; several nephews and nieces.
Graveside service was held at Forest Mrmorial Park, Milton. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Debbie A. Hall Borror
Debbie Anne Hall Borror, 35, of Fairfax, Virginia, formerly of Buffalo, died November 19, 1999 in a Fairfax hospital after a short illness.
She was an accountant for the city of Fairfax and a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by grandparents, Velva & Walter Hall and Nidre (Doc) Gritt.
Surviving: husband, Ralph Lee Borror; father and stepmother, Roger Lee Sr. and Margaret “Terry” Hall of Guardian, West Virginia; mother Marcella Gritt Hall of Manassas; brothers, Mark Hall and Walter Ray Hall, both of Manassas, and Roger Lee Hall Jr. of Stafford; sisters, Ashley Hall and Shandi Hall, both of Guardian; grandmother, Hester Gritt of Buffalo.
Service was held at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, West Virginia, with the Rev. George Cochran officiating. Burial was in Hall family Cemetery, Guardian.
The family of Debbie Hall Borror would like to thank everyone for their prayers and concern, cards, food and flowers during Debbie's sudden illness and death.

William L. Birt
William Lewis “Billy” Birt, 37, of Charleston died November 29, 1999, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a short illness.
He was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, a 1980 graduate of South Charleston High School, a client of Shawnee Hills for many years and a lifelong resident of the Kanawha Valley.
Surviving: parents, William E. and Maxine Birt of Scott Depot; sister, Julie Holstein of Scott Depot.
Service was held December 3, 1999 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Memorial donations may be made to Shawnee Hills, Charleston.

Alma Louise Bird
Alma Louise Bird, 93, of Hurricane died December 1, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Surviving: son, Lee of Hurricane; daughters, Inez Erskine of Wyandotte, Michigan, Alice Beaver and Louise Beaver, both of Hurricane; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held December 4, 1999 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Elder Willard Bird officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery, near Hurricane.

Ella Joy Buchanan
Ella Joy Booth Buchanan, 65, of Poca died November 14, 1999, at home after a short illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Poca, a Protestant, attended Black Betsy Community Church and was a retired licensed practical nurse from Thomas Memorial Hospital with 13 years' service.
Surviving: daugahters, Shari Turnbull Fox of Goose Creek, South Carolina and Lori Anne Buchanan McClanahan of Poca; sons, John L. Turnbull of Cat Spring, Texas, Steven L. Turnbull and James Robert Buchanan, both of Poca; mother, Ruth Y. Booth of Poca; sisters, Jewell H. Meadows of Poca, Betty L. Booth of Cross Lanes, and Ruth Ellen McKean of Hurricane; brothers, Charles Donald Booth of Parrish, Florida and Thomas P. Booth of Poca; three grandchildren.
Service was held November 17, 1999 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Willard Beller officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Charles Clay Bays
Charles Clay Bays, age 90, of Hurricane, W.Va., died Saturday, October 30, 1999, at his home. He was a retiree of Union Carbide and W.Va. Department of Highways, and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Hurricane. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Fizer Bays. Also surviving are four sons, Russell, Carlos, Bernard and Keith Bays; three daughters, Carolyn Boster, Sharon Martin and Kathy Messinger, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Services were held 11 a.m. Monday at Allen Funeral Home in Hurricane with Rev. Walter Wade officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park in Milton, W.Va.

Gladys Barnett
Mrs. Gladys Barnett, age 87, of Huntington, passed away Sunday, October 31st, 1999 at her son's residence. Funeral services were held at 2 PM Tuesday at Beard Mortuary with Rev. Roderick Barnett officiating@ Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. She was born December 27,1911 in Portsmouth, OH., a daughter of the late Bert and Maggie Bostic Fannin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles 0. Barnett and a brother, William Raymond Fannin. Gladys was a member of the former St. Luke United Methodist Church, a member of the Huntington Women's Club and a member of the first Contact group. She is survived by one son, Charles R. Barnett and his wife, Mary Lynn of Huntington; one daughter, Bonne Ruth Phillips and her husband, Dr. Robert L.. of Lubbock, Tx.; and by four grandchildren, Dr. Robert L. Phillips Jr., Elizabeth Brooke Phillips, C. Jason Barnett and Mark R. Barnett. The family would like to express their thanks to two special care givers, Virginia Roswall and Barbara Mullen

Harold Bailey
Harold “Leroy” Bailey, 56, of Red House died November 3, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
He was a former employee of Fike Chemical Co., Nitro, with 17 years’ service, and Shippers Car Lines, Red House. He was the owner and operator of Bailey’s Body Shop, Red House.
Surviving: wife, Linda Thorton Bailey; son, Sheldon of Red House; brothers, Arnold and Jackie, both of Red House; grandchildren, Jarrett Bailey and Tiffani Bailey, both of Red House.
Service was held November 6, 1999 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Larry Covert officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Park Mausoleum, Red House.

Raymah Carnifax Brown, 85, of Winfield died Oct. 20, 1999, in Teays Valley Nursing Center after a short illness. She was a member of Winfield Community Church, Scott Depot, a homemaker and a graduate of East Bank High School. Surviving: daughters, Ramona Mauzy of Winfield; son, the Rev. Conrad Keith Brown of Wilmington, N.C.; grandson, Michael Keith Brown of Wilmington; two great-grandchildren. Service held Saturday, October 23, 1999 at Winfield Community Church with the Rev. Mike Rader officiating. Entombment in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Ansted. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Ezra F. Bays
Ezra F. “Bud” Bays, 66, of Winfield died Oct. 18, 1999, at home after a long illness.
He was a former employee of Raleigh Junk Co.
Surviving: sisters, Parthina Freeman and Dorothy Freeman, both of Cincinnati, Hallie Barnes of Brookville, Ind., Phyllis Gates of South Charleston, Mary Baker of Winfield, and Allie Trent of St. Albans; several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999 at Chapman-Erskine Funeral Home, Winfield, with Pastor Doug McComas officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom.

James R. Burdette
Mr. James R. Burdette, 75, of Hurricane, W.Va, husband of Wanda Higginbotham Burdette, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston. Graveside services were conducted Friday, Aug. 27, 1999 at Brown Cemetery, Milton, with Evangelist Jim Baker officiating. He was born June 4, 1934 in Milton W.Va., a son of the late Clarence and Gertrude Swan Burdette. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a retired senior laboratory technician for Union Carbide. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Franklin Burdette, and one sister, Ruby Burdette. Survivors include his wife, Wanda; a son, David; a granddaughter, Brandi; a great grandson, Kevin; a niece, Linda; and a nephew, Carl. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

A. Samuel Binder
A. Samuel Binder, 86, of Hurricane died August 18, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was retired from selling securities in Columbus, Ohio.
Surviving: daughter, Rita Crowder of Battleground, Washington; son, Ronald of Feeding Hills, Massachusetts; four grandchildren; one grat-grandson.
Private graveside service was held at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with the Rev. J.D. Harrah officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Clifford D. Barnett
Clifford D. Barnett, 67, of Fraziers Bottom died August 13, 1999, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a long illness.
He was a 19-year resident of Fraziers Bottom, formerly of Red House, and retired from the Iron Workers Union Local 301. He attended Hometown Church of God Mission and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving: wife, Zelda Higginbotham Barnett.
Service was held August 15, 1999 at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Charles R. Burke
Charles R. Burke, 54, of Hurricane died August 6, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was an employee of Midtown Dental Laboratory, Charleston, and an Army paratrooper.
Surviving: wife, Linda Burke; daughters, G. Kathleen Corbin of Arab, Alabama and Barbara R. Johnson of Hurricane; parents, Mr. & Mrs. John T. Burke of Hurricane; brothers, John and William “Bill,” both of Huntsville, Alabama, and Harvey “Tim” of Hurricane; sister, Nancy Jean Burke of Hurricane; four grandchildren.
Service was held August 8, 1999 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Stephen Vallelonga officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Cancer Society.

Delcie Reed Bailey
Delcie Reed Bailey, 92, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Leon WV, died July 27, 1999, at home after a short illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Hillview Freewill Baptist Church, Reynoldsburg.
Surviving: daughters, Orpha Herbert of Grove City, Erma Bailey and Ann Bailey, both of Columbus, and Rushie Thomas of Patascala; sons, Arnold of Leon, Allen of Logan and James of Reynoldsburg; sisters, Maxine Cochran of Liberty and Mary Jones of Dunbar; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Service was held July 31, 1999 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Larry Woody officiating. Burial was in Suncrest Cemetery, Pt. Pleasant.

George W. Brown
George W. “Joe” Brown, 51, of Liberty died July 23, 1999, in General Division CAMC, after a long illness.
He was a self-employed block layer and a lifelong resident of Liberty.
Surviving: sisters, Mary Ellen Kessell of Liberty and Thelma Larrabee of North Charleston; brothers, Troy, Gene, Ray, Johnny, Dennis, David, and Alan, all of Liberty.
Graveside service was held July 26, 1999 in Brown Cemetery, Liberty, with the Rev. Sam Kinser officiating. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Norman N. Bird
Norman N. Bird, 79, of Hurricane died February 26, 1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a short illness.
He was retired from Huntington Alloys and was a member of Indian Fork Baptist Church, Culloden.
Surviving: wife, Violet; son, Dennis of Culloden; sister, Violet Jane Bird of Hurricane; one grandchild.
Service was held at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Elder Veldon Linn officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Rufus B. Burford
Rufus B. Burford, 98, of Poca died March 3, 1999, at home after a long illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and a former supervisor for the state Department of Highways. He was a retired supervisor for H&B Construction with 10 years’ service and attended Rock Branch Independent Church.
Surviving: sons, Elton of Cross Lanes and Cecil of Poca; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.
