Laura Boyd Cope, 91, of Ravenswood died Sept. 12, 1999, in Jackson General Hospital, Ripley.
She was a graduate of Marshall University and a member of Independent Fellowship Church, Ravenswood, the West Virginia Education Association and the Jackson County Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving: sons, Garland of Ravenswood, Luther T. of Scott Depot, E. Miller “Bill” of Logan; daughters, Lucille Craig of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Ruthe German of Pittsburgh; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.
Service Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999 at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, with the Rev. Allen Stewart and the Rev. Ronald Brooks officiating. Burial in Ravenswood Cemetery.

Joseph B. Conley
Joseph B. Conley, 87, of Hurricane died September 4, 1999, in Sunrise of Putnam after a long illness.
He was a retired pipefitter from Union Carbide with 30 years’ service, a 50-year member of Hurricane Masonic Lodge #139, a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #116, and Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a lifelong resident of the Kanawha Valley.
Surviving: wife, Elfreda Jones Conley; daughters, Mary Canfield of Hurricane and Henrietta “Hank” Gladwell of Cross Lanes; sons, Carlos King of Tampa, Florida, John Conley of Cecil, Ohio, Fred Conley of Cross Lanes, and Chuck Conley of Hurricane; stepdaughters, Carolyn Wardwell of Reston, Virginia and Janeth Jones, at home; brother, Bernard Conley of Macdeonia, Ohio; sister, Anna Mobley of Wilmington, North Carolina; caregivers, John and Judy Persinger of Scott Depot; 36 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held September 6, 1999 at Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Lee Swor, Pastor John Cremeans, Pastor Bruce Young, and Pastor Gerry White officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy R. Cook
Dorothy R. Cook, 70, of Scott Depot died September 5, 1999, at home after a long illness.
She was a homemaker, former owner and operator of Scott Depot Dairy Queen, and a Baptist. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, a 26-year resident of Scott Depot, a nine-year member of the West Virginia Women’s Bowling Association board of directors and six -year member of the Charleston Bowling Association board of directors.
Surviving: daughter, Deborah F. Davis of Seoul, South Korea and Linda S. Dent of Culloden; sons, Bernard R. Cook of Deltona, Florida, Richard K. Cook and Russell S. Cook, both of Hurricane; sisters, Doris Moreland of St. Albans, Helen Trimble of Hurricane, Virginia Cook of Tremont City, Ohio, and Tennessee Wright of Huntington; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Service was held September 9, 1999 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Chaplain Dean M. Davis officiating. Burial was in Highland Memory Gardens, Godby.

Earl Ronald Comstock
Earl Ronald Comstock, 94, of Hurricane died September 6, 1999, at home after a short illness.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Hurricane, and the former owner and operator of Comstock’s Furniture Co., Nitro.
Surviving: wife, Thelma; sons, David and Robert, both of Hurricane, Fred of Carson City, Nevada, and Earl Jr. of Long Beach, California; brother, Warren of Tucson, Arizona; sisters, Mildred White of Tucson, Margie Sciezska of Jacksonville, Florida and Mary Theis of Port Arthur, Texas; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
Service was held September 11, 1999 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Allen Stewart and Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Homer A. Canterbury
Homer A. Canterbury, 79, of Hurricane died August 17, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was a retired maintenance supervisor from Union Carbide with 42 years’ service, a member of Knights of Pythias 181 and Odd Fellows. He was a member, former church superintendent and Sunday school teacher at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane.
He was a Boy Scout leader and served with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a Navy veteran.
Surviving: wife, Muriel E. Canterbury; daughters, Brenda Warner of Hurricane, Debbie Hutchinson of Geneseo, Illinois, and Nancy Meyer of Kahuku, Hawaii; sons, Larry and Charlie, both of Hurricane, Jack of Inverness, Florida, Jerry of Luling, Louisiana, and Gary of Cumming, Georgia; sisters, Laura Robinette and Sandra Nelson, both of Hurricane, Velma Harden of Parma, Ohio, and Judith Russell of Virginia; brothers, Ray of DeLand, Florida and Douglas of Texas; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

Myrtle Crist
Myrtle Crist, 90, of Marysville, Ohio died July 19, 1999 at the Sarah Moore Home.
She was born March 15, 1909 in Putnam County to Ira Means and Ida (Davis) Means.
Mrs. Crist is survived by four sons, Campbell C. Crist Sr. of Marysville, Alvin of Delaware, David of Marion, and Vernon of Sunbury; three daughters, Violet Blain of Apple Grove WV, Elizabeth Woten of Glenwood WV, and Cheryl Barron of Brownsville, Texas; 34 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ira Means Jr. of Wellsville and Joseph Means of Powell; sister, Bertha Stevens of Apple Grove.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon “Jake” Crist; two daughters, Dorothy and Clara; three sisters, Clara, Raney and Dora Rae.
Funeral service was held July 22, 199 at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Corey Banes officiating. Burial was in Green Mound Cemetery, Kilbourne. Bennett Brown Funeral Home, Delaware, was in charge of arrangements.

James F. Cash
James F. “Jim” Cash, 66, of Red House died March 17, 1999, at home after a long illness.
He was a native of Virginia, a retired electrician, a member of International Brotherhood of Electricial Workers and president of the Eleanor Lions Club. He was a member of the West Virginia Lions Club Sight Conservation Foundation, district chairman of the Lions Blind Ski Program and member of Nitro Moose Lodge and Riverside Baptist Church.
Surviving: wife, Mary Harper Cash; daughters, Angela Ogden of Amherst, Virginia and Debbie King of Red House; sons, James Cash Jr. of Radford, Virginia, Mark Cash of Inwood, Mack Burgess and Charles Harper, both of Red House, Leon Harper of Bancroft, and Boyd Harper of Nitro; foster daughter, Drema Rhodes of Nitro; sisters, Mary Sprouse of Amherst, Virginia and Ruth Floyd of Lynchburg, Virginia; brother, Cecil of Roanoke, Virginia; 16 grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Riverside Baptist Church, Red House, with Pastor Michael Hanna and the Rev. Don Myers officiating. Burial was in Center Point Cemetery, Liberty. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be sent to West Virginia Lions Sight Conservation Foundation Inc., 916 - 11th Avenue, Huntington WV 25701.

Rev. John W. Caldwell
The Rev. John W. Caldwell, 63, of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, formerly of Hurricane, died March 11, 1999, in General Division, CAMC, after a short illness.
He was a pastor, church planner and evangelist with 48 years’ service.
Surviving: wife, Ramona Ennis Caldwell; daughters, Robin Plummer of Chestertown, Maryland and Angela Thomas of Clinton, Tennessee; sons, the Rev. James W. Caldwell of Kinston, North Carolina, the Rev. Jonathan E. Caldwell and the Rev. Joel A. Caldwell, both of Williamstown, West Virginia; mother, Opal G. Caldwell of Hurricane; sister, Louise Gail Fisher of Hurricane; brothers, Paul Edward Caldwell of Columbus, Ohio and James H. Caldwell of Hurricane; 10 grandchildren.
Service was held at Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church, Hurricane, with the Rev. James W. Caldwell, the Rev. Jonathan E. Caldwell and the Rev. Joel A. Caldwell officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Eastern Shore Bible Church, c/o JCM Missions, PO Box 913, Chestertown MD 21620.

Macil L. Casto
Macil L. Casto, 85, of Poca, formerly of Mount Etna Ridge, died March 7, 1999, at home after a long illness.
She was a three-year resident of Poca and a member of Hometown Senior Citizens, the Farm Women’s Club, and Paradise Church of God Mission.
Surviving: son, Gilbert O. Casto of Poca.
Service was held at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Doug McComas officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Gypsy Cook
Gypsy Cook, 99, of Hurricane, formerly of Clendenin, died March 4, 1999, in Sunrise Nursing Home after a long illness.
She was a member and Sunday school teacher at Calvary Baptist Church, Clendenin. She was a former switchboard operator for Bell Atlantic Co., and a former employee of the Greyhound bus station, Davis Drugstore and Cox’s Department Store, all in Clendenin.
Surviving: sisters, Dorothy Cook Fields of St. Albans and Myrtle Cook of Clendenin; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with the Rev. Robert Auclair officiating. Burial was in Clendenin Memorial Gardens.

Garnett Cobb
Garnett “Tom” Cobb, 78, of Scott Depot, formerly of Clendenin, died March 4, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital after a short illness.
She was a native of Left Hand and a member of Clendenin United Methodist Church, the Merry Worker’s Circle and Clendenin Woman’s Club. She was owner/manager of Cobb Station Tastee Freeze, Clendenin.
Surviving: husband, John Woodrow “Woody” Cobb; sons, John A. Cobb of Exeter, New Hampshire and James W. Cobb of Vienna; sister, Geneal O’Dell of South Charleston; five grandchildren.
Service was held at Clendenin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Evans officiating. Burial was in the Cobb family Cemetery, Cobb Station, Clendenin. Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy M. Cochran
Dorothy Mae Cochran, 52, of Red House died February 28, 1999, at home after a long illness.
She was a member of Red Oak Drive Christian Community Church.
Surviving: husband, the Rev. Tommy Cochran; daughter, Loretta Deal of Red House; sons, Charles P. and Steven Ray, both of Red House, and Richard A. of Poca; sisters, Kathleen Hamrick of Michigan and Freda Welch of Winfield; brothers, Mark Gillispie of Black Betsy and Robert Gillispie of Michigan; eight grandchildren.
Service was held at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Archie King officiating. Burial was in New Antioch Cemetery, Confidence.

Paul W. Cain
Paul W. Cain, 79, of Buffalo died February 11, 1999, in VA Medical Center, Huntington, after a long illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and retired from American Viscose, Nitro, with 39 years’ service. He was a former member of the United Textiles Workers of America and the AFL-CIO. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Darby’s Rangers 1st and 3rd battalion, a former POW and a member of the Ranger Battalion Association.
Surviving: wife, Eva Dunn Cain; daughter, Karia C. Merritt of Alexandra, Virginia; sons, Glen F. of Joseph, Oregon and Conrad L. of Buffalo; four grandchildren.
Service was held at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Doug McComas officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Darrell E. Coyner Sr.
Darrell E. “Chuck” Coyner Sr., 43, of Scott Depot, formerly of Hurricane, died February 6, 1999, at home after a short illness.
He was an employee of Teays Valley Rehabilitation and Nursing Centery and an 8-year resident of Scott Depot.
Surviving: wife, Abby L. Coyner; daughter, Deanna L. Coyner of Scott Depot; son, Darrell Eugene Coyner Jr. of Scott Depot; mother, Lottie Coyner of Culloden; sisters, Louise Edmonds of Hamlin, Eloise Glenn of Wickes, Arkansas, Frances Sowards of Hurricane, and Judy Armstead of Cottageville; brother, James Qualls of Hurricane.
Service was held at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Robert “Bob” Underwood officiating. Burial was in Larck Cemetery, Scott Depot.

Ilean G. Casdorph
Ilean G. Casdorph, 80, of Buffalo died January 17, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital after a short illness.
She was a retired lab technician from CAMC, a former employee of General Electric, Florida, and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Nitro.
Surviving: husband, Charles L. Casdorph; brothers, Dick Ash of Tornado and Larry Ash of St. Albans; sisters, Beulah Baldwin of Florida, Bonita Goodall of Nitro and Rowena Tucker of Scott Depot.
Service was held at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Dean Borgmeyer officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Donald W. Cunningham
Donald W. Cunningham, 78, of Robertsburg, formerly of Eleanor, died December 28, 1998, at home after a short illness.
He was a former employee of the Division of Highways, Red House.
Surviving: wife, Helen Cunningham; daughter, Barbara Shaw of Pt. Pleasant; sons, Ronald of Eleanor and Gary at home; sisters, Geraldine Pauley of Cross Lanes and Maxine Curtiss of Sarasota, Florida; brother, Othel Cunningham of North Carolina; three grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; two great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Charles Curtiss officiating. Burial was in Beech Graove Cemetery, Eleanor.

Emerson W. Cox
Emerson W. Cox, 92, of Winfield died January 20, 1999, at home.
He was a retired manager for A.W. Cox department store with 30 years’ service and was co-owner of J&E Cox.
Surviving: daughters, Betty Jo Cunningham of Winfield and Peggy Ann James of Pompano Beach, Florida; grandchildren, Sandy Morrison, Doug Cunningham and Sherry Larkie; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, South Charleston, with Pastor Mike Rader officiating. Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorial donations be made to Hospice Care, Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.
