Raymah Rothgeb Grover
Raymah Rothgeb Grover, 80, a resident of the Schroder Manor in Hamilton, Ohio, died Sunday, August 1, 1999 in the Mercy Hospital, Hamilton.
She was formerly of Oxford, Ohio and a former resident of Eleanor, West Virginia. Born June 29, 1919 in Gallipolis, the daughter of the late Chauncey and Gladys Spurlock Rothgeb, she attended Rio Grande College and later studied at Ohio State and Miami universities. She was an associate editor of The Oxford Press and worked on the staff of The Fisherman magazine.
She and her husband served as volunteers with the Central Africa Mission of the Church of Christ in what is now Zimbabwe for four years during the 1970’s.
She was preceded in death in April 1999 by her husband, G. Ura Grover, whom she married July 2, 1939 in Rio Grande.
Surviving: sons, Edwin Grover of Bay Village and John Grover of Cincinnati; sister, Jane Leasure of Middletown; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held August 3, 1999 in the Oxford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Alan DeCourcy officiating. Graveside services were held August 4, 1999 at the Gravel Hill Cemetery, Cheshire. Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, Oxford, was in charge of arrangements. Earl E. Gott
Earl E. Gott, 82, of Poca died February 7, 1999, at home after a long illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Poca, was retired from Viscose/Avtex, Nitro, with 40 years’ service and was former owner of E&N Electric. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of American Legion and was a former Poca District Democratic committeeman. He was instrumental in the construction of Rock Branch Elementary School and was a member of Character Hunting Club, Masonic Lodge 170, Nitro, Scottish Rite Bodies, Beni Kedem Shrine, Eastern Star Chapter 153, Nitro, Pitch and Pull Camping Club, Good Sams Club, Mountaineer Sams Camping Club and St. Paul United Methodist Church, Nitro.
Surviving: wife, Nell Vera Gott; daughter, Sue Ann Null of Poca; son, James E. of Alexandria, Louisiana; sister, Anna Edens of Palm Bay, Florida; brother, Ernest of Watha, North Carolina; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Okey Harless and the Rev. John McCoy officiating. Entombment was in Cunningham Memorial Park Mausoleum, St. Albans. Ozella M. Gibson
Ozella M. Gibson, 75, of Hurricane died March 16, 1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington.
She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Surviving: daughter, Patsy Hazelrigg of Barboursville; sons, James W. Jr. of Fort Mill, S.C., Roger of Hurricane; sisters, Emmer McDowell of Carlton, Ga., Frances Young of Hurricane; brothers, Arnold Bird of Kentucky, Everett and Raymond Bird, both of Hurricane; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, March 18, 1999 at Calvary Baptist Church, Hurricane, with the Rev. Pete Thompson and the Rev. James Jobe officiating. Burial in Hodges Cemetery, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
Zelma M. Gillispie
Zelma Marie Gillispie, 86, of Hurricane died March 6, 1999, at home after a long illness.
She was a member of Springdell Freewill Baptist Church, Hurricane.

Dorothy R. Green
Dorothy Russell Green, 81, of Hurricane died February 23, 1999, in Cabell Huntington Hospital after a short illness.
She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Teays Valley.
Surviving: daughter, Helen “Sug” Dailey of Scott Depot; son, Paul “James” Russell of Huntington; brother, Harry Jarrell of Bolt; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.

William H. Goff
William H. Goff, 77, of Cross Lanes died January 12, 1999, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a long illness.
He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, a member of Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Jr. and Robert A., both of Hurricane; brother, John of Cocoa Beach, Florida; sisters, Kathleen Legg, Ruth Meadows and Janet Petry, all of Charleston, Betty Woods of Virginia, and Helen Gunnoe of Texas; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Lunsford “Bess” Grass
Mrs. Elizabeth Lunsford “Bess” Grass, 88, of Ona, WV, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 15, 1999, at her home. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 18, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Dr. Thomas J. DuBose officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Mrs. Grass was born in Mason County on June 5, 1910. She was a daughter of the late George E. and Mary Frances “Mollie” Ball Lunsford. Mrs. Grass was also preceded in death by her husband, Lindsey J. Grass; a daughter, Jane Ann Meadows; a son, Joe Eddie Grass and two sisters, Evelyn Ball and Dorothy Wallace. Mrs. Grass was a member of the Milton Baptist Church and received her B.A. degree from Marshall College. She first taught elementary school in Mason County then moved to the Cabell County school system. Mrs. Grass retired with a total of forty-one years of teaching service. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sara and John Curatolo of Charleston; five grandchildren, Jane Unabia of Virginia Beach, Va., Dee Wilber of Chesapeake, Ohio, Rod Richardson of Milton, Todd Grass of Culloden and Ty Grass of Hurricane; three great-grandsons, Eric and Montana Richardson and Logan Grass of Hurricane; and one sister, Mildred Gibson of Glenwood.
Bricel E. Herdman
Bricel Eugene “Gene” Herdman, 59, of Buffalo died November 27, 1999, in Pleasant Valley Hospital, Pt. Pleasant, after a short illness.
He was a riverboat captain for Madison Coal & Supply Co., Charleston. He was a former employee of M&G Transport Co., and Army veteran and a member of the Moose, Nitro.
Surviving: wife, Kathy Boyd Herdman; daughters, Nancy L. Delhosta and Sherry Painter, both of Jonesville, Louisiana, and Eugena “Jeannie” Kosa of Eleanor; sons, Bricel Jr. of Eleanor, Shawn of Buffalo, and Mike of Massachusetts; stepdaughters, Dierdra Dillon of Charleston and Rachel Dillon of Tarboro, North Carolina; stepson, Norman Dillon of Charleston; sisters, Debora L. Hill of Eleanor and Karen S. Craig of Buffalo; brother, Kenneth L. of Bancroft; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren.

Nettie Hodges
Nettie Sovine Hodges, 84, of Hurricane died December 8, 1999, in Sunbridge of Putnam after a long illness.
She was a homemaker, a member of First Baptist Church, Hurricane, and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: husband, Lewis Ray Hodges; son, Arden of Hurricane; daughter, Nancy Tolley of Hurricane; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Adrianna Hayes
Adrianna Diane Nichole Hayes, infant daughter of William and Rebecca Diane Hayes of Poca, was stillborn December 10, 1999 in Women and Children's Hospital, CAMC.
Also surviving: paternal grandparents, Williams Junior and Martha Marie Hayes of Red House; sisters, Heather Hutchinson, Bambi Hayes, Amy Hayes and Andrea Hayes, all of Poca; brothers, William Christopher Hayes and Jesse Hayes, both of Poca.

Rev. Asa B. Harris Jr.
The Rev. Asa B. Harris Jr., 92, of Scott Depot, formerly of Philippi, died November 24, 1999, in Regency Place, Scott Depot.
He was a dean and professor at Alderson-Broaddus College and served as pastor at various churches, including Broadway Baptist Church, Parkersburg, Calvary Baptist Church, Charleston, and Handley Baptist Church. He served as Christian education director for the West Virginia Baptist Convention with 21 years' service. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Tie That Binds Bible Class.
Surviving: daughters, Judith Kay “Judy” Fowler of Independence and Elizabeth “Bette” Keefer of Charleston; sisters, Mary Proudfoot of Pennsylvania, Oma West of Rio Grande, Ohio, and Geneva Johnson of Trenton, Michigan; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Charles E. Harper Jr., 51, of Poca, formerly of St. Albans, died November 28, 1999, in General Division, CAMC, after a short illness.
He was retired from Lowe's, Charleston, with 14 years' service, was a member, junior minister and bus worker at Landmark Baptist Church, Jefferson, and served at Crossroads Mission, Charleston.

He was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane, and a retired pipefitter from FMC Corp., South Charleston, with 40 years’ service. He was a member of John D. Henson Senior Center, Hurricane, and VFW Posts in St. Albans and Hurricane. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

She was a former employee of Nitro Pencil Factory and the Nitro Moose Lodge. She waa a member of Women of the Moose and a native of Black Betsy.

She was a 30-year resident of Winfield and a retired general manager frofm the former Diamond Department Store with 30 years’ service. She was a member of Winfield United Methodist Church, where she was a trustee and administrative board member.

Doris M. Hinshaw, 69, of Hurricane, formerly of Bloomington, Illinois and Streator, Illinois, died September 1, 1999, in Canada’s Tender Touch Care Home, Winfield, after a long illness.
She was retired from the library of Illinois-Wesleyan University and was a former employee of Stone & Thomas, Teays Valley. She was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane, and Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
Surviving: brother, Richard Hinshaw of Scott Depot.
