Mrs. Marcia Kay Black Dowdy, 45, of Lynchburg, VA, formerly of Huntington, WV, died 'Thursday, June 3, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Funeral services were held Monday at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Campbell officiating. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. She was born June 30, 1953, in Huntington, WV, the daughter of Janice Cook Black of Huntington and the late Corbet 'Corky' Black. She was a former secretary for Superior Cadillac. In addition to her mother she is survived by one daughter, Virginia Lenore "Ginny" Dowdy; one son, Corbet Mitchell "Corky" Dowdy; one sister, Patsy Black Ross and husband, Timothy "Birddog," all of Barboursville, WV; one niece, Holly Ross; three nephews, Joey and Jake Sharp and Justin Ross; her ex-husband, Thomas Mitchell Dowdy of Lynchburg, VA; one sister-in-law, Joncie Dowdy of Virginia; and one cousin and special friend, Michael Cooper of Milton, WV. Beard Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Roy Lee Elam
Roy Lee Elam, 86, of St. Albans, W.Va., died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Graveside services were conducted Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Beckley, W.Va., by the Rev. Tim Jones. He was born Nov. 22, 1912, in Fayette County, W.Va., a son of the late Fred and Nattie Tate Elam. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Adkins Elam. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Barbara Elam and their children, Jennifer and Jonathan Elam; two stepsons, Clay Mynes of Florida and Daniel Mynes of Pennsylvania; and one stepdaughter, Juanita McManamay of Beckley, W.Va. He also is survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Nancy Rader Easter
Mrs. Nancy Rader Easter, 72, of Milton, W.Va., went to be with her Lord Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at her her home. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Aug. 13 at the Milton Baptist Church, of which she was a member and deaconess. Pastor J. David Easter, her son, and Dr. Thomas J. DuBose will officiate. Burial in Milton Cemetery. Nancy was born at Huntington on Jan. 16, 1927. She was a daughter of the late George F. and Grace Lee Stewart Rader. Nancy was also preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie Kulander and Margaret Taylor; a brother, Charles Rader and on July 13, 1994, by her husband, Harold H. Easter. Nancy retired from the Cabell County Board of Education as a secretary for Milton High School and was active in the Milton Senior Citizens. She is survived by three sons; Pastor J. David Easter and wife, Lisa of Vincennes, Ind., Tim Easter and wife, Sandra and Jeff Easter and wife, Patricia all of Milton; seven grandchildren, Luke Easter, Cody Easter, Amanda Neal and husband, Tim, Christina Easter, Katie Easter, Stephen Easter and Cindy Easter; one great-grandson, Jared Neal and one sister, Anna Virginia Roberts of Huntington. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Jo Ann Bowyer Woodard
Jo Ann Bowyer Woodard, 55, of Milton, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 30, 1999, at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Bobby Ray. Burial in Milton Cemetery. She was born May 12,1944, in Brown City, MI, a daughter of the late Joseph and Virginia Perry Bowyer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis Earl Woodard; one daughter, Karen Renee Woodard; one sister, Sandra Lee Meadows; and one brother, Richard Dale Bowyer. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna Gail and Fred Boring of Spring Hill, TN, Tammy Jo and Thomas Jones of North Branch MI, and Jennifer Lyn Woodard of Lapeer, MI; one son, James Douglas Woodard of Lapeer, MI; one sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Charles Chapman of Barboursville; one brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Joyce Bowyer of Barboursville; and eight grandchildren.

Forest Edward Estep Sr.
Forrest Edward Estep Sr., 76, of Milton, WV, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at his home. Funeral services were conducted July 2, 1999, at Washington Avenue Church of God Holiness, Milton, WV, of which he was a member, with the Rev. John E. Hathaway, Pastor Vernon L. Wallace and the Rev. Michael Chapman officiating. Forrest was born in Van, WV, on June 14, 1923. He was a son of the late James M. and Alta S. McLaine Estep. Forrest was also preceded in death by one sister, Maymie Wallace; and one brother, Carl Estep. He was a retired partner with Taylor & Co., Huntington and a member of the W.Va. Society of CPA’s. He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Donahoe Estep: one daughter and son-in-law, Angela Dawn and Joseph A. Hensley; and one son, Forrest E. Estep Jr. all of Milton; a grandson, Davis Alexander Hensley; three step-granddaughters, Megan Marie Hensley, Jessica Lee Hensley and Allison Paige Hensley; one sister, Mary Austin of Olathe, Kan. and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements. The family suggests that memorials be made to Washington Avenue Church of God Holiness or the Southside United Methodist Church, Huntington, WV in lieu of flowers.

LEONA ASHWORTH ENSOR
Leona Ashworth Ensor, widow of Charles F. Ensor died Tuesday, March 23, 1999 at Mariner Health Care after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 26, 1999 at the Milton Funeral Home by Rev. Stan Maynard and Rev. David Ashworth. Interment at Forest Memorial Park, Milton, W.Va. She was born May 18, 1914, in Milton, W.Va., the daughter of the Iate Alice and John William Ashworth. She was a clerk with Holley Brothers and Seager and Green, Estep, Rays Grocery. She also worked for Douglas Aircraft Company of Los Angeles, Calif. and, General Machine Co. of South Charleston, W.V, during World War II. She was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church where she attended as a child, and the Church In The Valley. Survivors include one son, Donald G. Ensor of Huntington, and one grandson, Matthew A. Black of Huntington; two sisters, Lula Lunsford of Milton and Ola Mae Dailey, Ona W.Va.; two brothers, William Woodrow Ashworth, Milton, W.Va. and Roy Lakin Ashworth, Huntington, W.Va. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Isa Avelyn Felix
Isa Avelyn Felix, 64, of Ona, died Thursday, October 28,1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Services were conducted Monday, November 1 1999, at Z. Warner United Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Ryder, Rev. Brent Gibson and Rev. Jeff Benedict officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born December 11, 1934. in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Stanley and Gladys Simpson Colegrove. She was a homemaker and a member of Z. Warner United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold “Corky” Felix, and one sister, Averil Rollyson. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and David Benedict and Pam and Steve Browning, all of Ona; one nephew and his wife, Randy and Annette Rollyson and their son, Matthew; a special cousin, Phyllis Smith; four grandchildren Stephanie Valdez, Kristi Browning, Brad Benedict and Aaron Benedict; and two greatgrandchildren, Anthony Steven Valdez and Alison Nicole Rowe. Pallbearers were Bill Miller, Randy Scarberry, Rod Bodmer,Warren Williams, Delmar Massie, and Peck Rutherford. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements.

James William Fulks
James William Fulks, 71, of Milton, W,Va., went to be with his Lord Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were held on Thursday at The Church in the Valley with the Reverends Stan Maynard, David Ashworth and Jim Franklin officiating. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. He was born June 20, 1928, in Lincoln County, WV, a son of the late Roy and Gladys Webb Fulks. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Janet Leach and Delores Mays. He was retired from the cold drawing department at Huntington Alloys. He was a charter member of The Church in the Valley, Milton. He is survived by his wife, Josephine “Jo” Fulks; a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Angela Fulks of Centerburg, OH; a daughter and son-in-law Jamie and Ric Kern of Atlanta, GA; four sisters, Sylvia Midkiff of Franklin, WV, Elsie Midkiff of Huntington, WV, Rose Ekers of Avon Lake, OH, and Alice Thomas of Natchez, Miss.; three grandchildren, Mackenzie Jae Fulks, Jordan Alexander Fulks, and Logan James Fulks; and several nieces and nephews. Susan “Dolly” Cabell Finley
Susan “Dolly” Cabell Finley, 88, of Barboursville, died Saturday, October 23, 1999 at Mariner Health Care. Funeral services were conducted Monday, October 25, 1999 at 1:00 P.M. at the Wallace Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Rick Glass. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. She was born May 27, 1911 in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Mosco and Mollie May Farley Cabell. She attended Elmwood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Chapman, her second husband, John Melvin Finley (obituary further below in list), one sister, Stowe Ann Thomas, and two brothers, Clinton “Bear Cat” May and Douglas Cabell. She is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and James Scaggs of Wayne, Georgia and Hubert Venoy of Milton; one brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Opal Cabell of South Point, Ohio; two special nieces, Mollie Hinchman and Nancy Rush; four sisters-in-law, Kathryn Wickline of Salt Rock, Lillian Cabell of Barboursville, Maybelle Baylous of Kentucky, and Ercie Hicks of Newport News, Virginia; one brother-in-law, Enoch Finley and his wife Mildred of Salt Rock; special friends, Lowell and Betty Clay and family and Evelyn Adams, and several nieces and nephews.

Marie Foster
Marie Foster, 67, of Milton, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999 at the Milton Funeral Home, Milton with Rev. Jackie Clark officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Mrs. Foster was born Nov. 14, 1931 in Milton, the daughter of the late Wesley V. and Essie G. Harbour Wise. She was retired from the Huntington State Hospital and was a member of Zoar Baptist Church. Her husband Carl J. Foster preceded her in death. Mrs. Foster is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Steven.and Janet Foster of Kenova, Greg and Jesi Foster of Branchland, Butch and Callie Foster of Milton and one daughter and son-in-law, Lori Lea and Steven Johnson of Hurricane; a brother and sister-in-law, Donovan and JoAnn Wise of Bayboro, N.C.; a sister, Dorothy Perry of Milton; a sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Arden Hite of Milton; her grandchildren, Wesley, Michael, Jeremy, Cory, Andrea, Jesse and Tyler Foster and Kaylan Johnson; and one special step-grandson, Mike Gill of Salt Rock; and one great-granddaughter, Taylor Foster. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and special friends; and one very special childhood friend, Freda Sarson of Proctorville.

Sephie Doris Ferguson
Sephie Doris Ferguson, 91, of Barboursville, went to be with the Lord Saturday, June 26, 1999 at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 29,1999 at the Wallace Funeral Home by Evangelist Bud Lucas. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born June 21, 1908 in Boone County, a daughter of the late Anthony and Rebecca Meadows Kuhn. She was a member of the Milton Church of Christ. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ostace Earl Ferguson; one son, Melvin Earl Ferguson; two grandsons, David Earl Ferguson and Michael Glen Ferguson. She is survived by her daughter, Doris Cooper of Barboursville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Avery “Ace” and Opal Ferguson of Barboursville, Floyd L. and Lovena Ferguson of Ona, and Lloyd G. and Edith Ferguson of Lesage; one grandson, Johnny Dale Ferguson of Barboursville whom she raised; eleven grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

John Melvin Finley
John Melvin Finley, 80, of Barboursville, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at Morris Memorial Nursing Home. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 2, 1999, at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Rick Glass. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born February 23, 1919, in Milton, WV, a son of the late Ben and Valeria Burns Finley. He was retired from International Nickel and was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Junior Finley; and two sisters, Beulah Johnson and Thelma Morrison. He is survived by his wife, Susan C. “Dolly” Cabell Finley; two sisters, Kathryn Wickline of Salt Rock and Ercie Hicks of Newport News, Virginia; one brother, Enoch Finley and his wife, Mildred, of Salt Rock; two sisters-in-law, Georgia Venoy and her husband Hubert of Milton, Ruth Scaggs and her husband James of Wayne; one brother-in-law, Frank Cabell and his wife, Opal, of South Point, Ohio; two special nieces, Mollie Hinchman and Nancy Rush: several nieces and nephews, and special friends, Lowell and Betty Clay and family.

Leroy Flora
Mr. Leroy Flora, 72, of Glenwood, WV, passed away Thursday, June 17,1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington. Graveside funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 19 in White Chapel Memorial Gardens Chapel, Barboursville, WV, with Pastor Paul R. Meadows officiating. LeRoy was born Dee. 27, 1926, at Apple Grove, WV. He was a son of the late John D. Flora. LeRoy was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Cleary Flora. He was a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Army and a life member in both VFW 9738 and D.A.V. Post 52. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lee Paul and DeVonna Flora of Richmond, VA, and Ronald J. and Valeria Flora of Barboursville; one step-granddaughter, Amanda Chapman; one brother, Charles Flora of Glenwood and special friends, Genny Kinniard, Pauline Slayton, and Rick and Karen Sowards. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Huntington, P.O. Box 464, Huntington, WV 25709-0464 in lieu of flowers. Heck Funeral Home, Milton was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. T. Harold Grant
Rev. T. Harold Grant, 73, of Charleston, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Dec 14, 1999, at home after an extended illness. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at Heck Funeral Home with the Rev. Marvin Horne and Pastor Marshall Crowder officiating and singing by the Gospel Word Singers. Burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. He was born April 3, 1926, in Huntington, WV, a son of the late Weston and Hattie Grant. He was also preceded in his death by one brother, two sons-in-law, and six grandchildren. He was retired from Monsanto Chemical Company, Nitro, after 33 years of service. He was of the radio ministry with 29 years of service and was affiliated with the Missionary United Gospel Mission of Charleston, WV. He is asurvived by his wife, three sons, Harold Grant of Connecticut, Kenneth Grant of Huntington, and Carlos Grant returning from Texas; six daughters, Phyllis Combs and Kathy (Kat) LeGrand, both of Chesapeake, OH, Virginia (Jenny) Parsons, Anna Robinson, Brenda (B) Grant, all of Culloden, Louise (Lu-Lu) LeMay of Huntington; one sister, Irene Chapman of Culloden and two brothers, Mansel Grant of Hurricane and Dana Grant of Tampa, FL. Also surviving are three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, four brothers-in-law, and six sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews and a host of family, also his radio family and friends.

Gretel McCoy Gugel
Gretel McCoy Gugel, 78, of Huntington, formerly of Anniston, Ala., died Monday, November 8, 1999. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, November 10, 1999, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, by Pastor David Cartwright. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born December 4, 1920, in Henlawson, daughter of the late Charles and Hester Bledsoe McCoy. She was a member of Salt Rock United Methodist Church. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Byron Snow of Tallahassee, Florida; two sisters, Thelma Ranson of Huntington and Clara Nickell of Seville, Ohio; two brothers, Pete McCoy of Charleston and Lawrence McCoy of Seville, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Jeremy and Christiana Snow.

Brian Matthew Gibson
Brian Matthew (Gift of God) Gibson, 11, of Barboursville, beloved son of Roger Lee and Carol Rene Gibson, brother of Lauren Rene Gibson, went home to be with Jesus, October 16,1999. He was born May 27, 1988 in Huntington. He was a member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, a member of Boy Scout Troop #63, Melissa, and a 6th grade Honor Roll Student at Barboursville Middle School. Also surviving are his paternal grandmother, Neva J. Gibson of Barboursville; maternal grandmother, Norma L. King of Huntington; maternal grandfather, Edward H. King of Rome, Ohio; several aunts and uncles, Rev. Chelcie and Bobbi Gibson of Barboursville, Bill and Sharon Mullins of Madison W.Va, Jean Steinburg of Ft. Myers, FL., Doug and Vicky Brown of Blair, WV., Rod and Marcie Rollins of Denver, N.C., Jeff and Kim Watson of Salt Rock, Bob King of Huntington, Jim and Lois Dingess of Huntington, Jimi and Courtenay King of Huntington, and a host of cousins and friends. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, October 19,1999 at the Lewis Memorial Baptist Church by Dr. David Lemming and Rev. Chelcie Gibson. Burial in Lucian Adkins Cemetery. Reen Gibson Jr.
Reen Gibson, Jr., 79, of Barboursville, passed away Monday, Aug. 30, 1999. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Fred Ramey. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Nov. 3, 1919, in Barboursville, a son of the late Reen and Virgie Brumfield Gibson. He was retired from Connors Steel and was active in the Steel Workers Union Local 37. He was a member of First Altizer Baptist Church. He was also preceded in death by one son, Wetzel Gibson. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Marie Clark Gibson; one daughter, Charlotte Sperry of Akron, Ohio; three sons, Russell Gibson of Barboursville, Roger Gibson of Virginia Beach, Va., and Ronald Gibson of Akron, Ohio; two brothers, David Gibson and Kenny Gibson, both of Barboursville, nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff of Morris Memorial Nursing Home for their care.

Randy Lee Gue
Randy Lee Gue. 54, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999. He was born on April 30, 1945, in Cabell County, W.Va. He is the son of the late Arlin and Lula Mae “Christain” Gue. He was employed at Barboursville Block for 15 Years. Randy is survived by his wife, Pamela “Knight” Gue. He will be deeply missed by his children, Teresa Mays of Ona, W.Va., Terri Lynn Slone of Barboursville, W.Va., one daughter of Chicago, Ill., Randy Lee Gue, Jr. of Ohio and three sons of Chicago; two sisters, Sissy Gue of Lesage, W.Va., and Helen Phelps of Chicago; two brothers, Calvin Gue, Sr. of Lesage, W.Va., and Gary Lee Gue of Glenwood, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Ryan, Megan, Jessica and Samuel; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, who will greatly miss him. Funeral Services were conducted Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. David Clark. Burial in Crook Cemetery.

Mildred Gillenwater
Mildred Gillenwater, 77, of Milton, WV, passed.away Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999,. Funeral services were conducted Saturday,.Aug. 14 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor James Jobe officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park Milton. Mildred was born in Cabell County on July 12, 1922. She was a daughter of the late Lowell and Verna Woodard Smith. Mildred was also preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Gillenwater; a brother, Paul Smith; two sisters, Geneva McCallister and Marcella Brumfield; and two grandchildren, Kenny Gillenwater and Valerie Rose Setliff. She is survived by five daughters, Jenny Cremeans and Anna Morris, both of Milton, Paulette Black of Barboursville Kathryn Denbow and Mary Setliff, both of Lesage; three sons, Lonnie of Milton, David Loyd of Hurricane and Billy Lee of Glenwood; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

ORMAL "ED" GRANT
Ormal "Ed" Grant, 66, of Ashland, Ky., formerly of Huntington, WV, died Saturday, April 17, 1999 at the Veterans Administrations Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. James Webster. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery. He was born May 27, 1932 in Winfield, WV., a son of the late Russell and Gladys Chapman Grant. He was a veteran of the US Army, US Air Force and the National Guard. He was a life member of VFW Post #1064, Huntington, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Herman Otis Grant and Charles Odell Grant. He is survived by one sister, Carolyn Clay of Huntington; one brother, Danny Cotton of Tucson, Arizona; special nieces, Barbara Smith and Pam Crooks, both of Ashland, Ky. and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a host of friends.

Pearl Evans Gibson
Pearl Evans Gibson, 64, of Milton, widow of George Elbert Gibson, died Friday at her residence. She was a homemaker. survivors include one daughter, Iva DeAnna Thompson of Milton; and four.sons, Steven Gibson and Kim Gibson, both of Milton, Donald Ray Gibson and Jerry Gibson, both of Tennessee. Talmage Gibson
Talmage Gibson, 85, of Salt Rock, WV, went to be with the Lord, Friday morning, May 14,1999, at his residence after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 16, 1999, at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Denver Dailey and the Rev. Danny Ross. Burial in Susie Chapel Cemetery. He was born July 12,1913, in Lincoln County, a son of the late Robert and Eva McComas Gibson. He was a retired employee of C&O Railroad, and a member of the Upper Smith Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one son, Gary David Gibson; one grandson, Gary Allen Gibson; and one sister, Mary Perry. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lona Adkins Gibson; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Bill Allard of Clearwater, FL; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carolyn Gibson of Barboursville; one daughter-in-law, Linda Gibson Frazier of Salt Rock, WV; two sisters, Dora Bias of Barboursville and Lillie Bailey of Salt Rock; two brothers, Joseph and Thomas Gibson, both of Huntington, WV; seven loving grandchildren, Vanisea, Robert Timothy, Michael, Leisa, Barry, Donald and Lesley; nine adorable greatgrandchildren, Matthew, Nathan, Morgan, Brittany, Paige, Kayla, Andrew, Justin and Marissa; and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ. Elizabeth Lunsford “Bess” Grass
Mrs. Elizabeth Lunsford “Bess” Grass, 88, of Ona, WV, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 15, 1999, at her home. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 18, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Dr. Thomas J. DuBose officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Mrs. Grass was born in Mason County on June 5, 1910. She was a daughter of the late George E. and Mary Frances “Mollie” Ball Lunsford. Mrs. Grass was also preceded in death by her husband, Lindsey J. Grass; a daughter, Jane Ann Meadows; a son, Joe Eddie Grass and two sisters, Evelyn Ball and Dorothy Wallace. Mrs. Grass was a member of the Milton Baptist Church and received her B.A. degree from Marshall College. She first taught elementary school in Mason County then moved to the Cabell County school system. Mrs. Grass retired with a total of forty-one years of teaching service. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sara and John Curatolo of Charleston; five grandchildren, Jane Unabia of Virginia Beach, Va., Dee Wilber of Chesapeake, Ohio, Rod Richardson of Milton, Todd Grass of Culloden and Ty Grass of Hurricane; three great-grandsons, Eric and Montana Richardson and Logan Grass of Hurricane; and one sister, Mildred Gibson of Glenwood.

Gerald Dean "Jerry" Gawthrop
Mr. Gerald Dean "Jerry" Gawthrop, 51, of Lesage, WV, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at his home of a heart attack. Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 7 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor Edwin S. Harper officiating. Burial in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom, WV. Jerry was born at Summersville, WV, on Sept. 2, 1947. He was a son of Eva Evans of White Sulphur Springs, WV, and the late C.R. Gawthrop. Jerry was also preceded in death by one brother, Hugh E. Bennett. He was a member of Apostolic Life Cathedral, Huntington, an employee of Marshall University and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors in addition to his mother are his wife, Betty Wray Gawthrop; two stepdaughters, Betty Jo Morrell and Rita Smith both of Barboursville; one stepson, Larry Dunn of Huntington; two sisters, Charlotte Cartwright of Summersville, WV, and Rita Evans of White Sulphur Springs; five brothers, James R. Moses of Indianapolis, IN, Jennings Bennett of El Paso, TX, Jesse Brown of San Antonio, TX, H. Gene Gawthrop of Dahlonega, GA, and Allen R. Gawthrop of Hurricane; his mother-in-law, Vada Wray of Lesage; a special friend, Rick Ford; six grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Virgie Hayes
Virgie Hayes, 90, of Ashland, formerly of Culloden, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at King's Daughters Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Heck Funeral Home, with Dr. Michael Routt officiating. Burial in the Culloden Cemetery. She was born Sept 11, 1909, a daughter of the late Andy and Minta Mullins Workman. She was also preceded in her death by her husband, Frederick Eugene Hayes, who passed away on Feb. 21, 1984; and her son, William A. Hayes. Survivors include a son, James “Jim” Hayes of Hiddenite, NC; two daughters, Thelma `T.J.” Templeton of Ashland, KY, and Betty Johnson of Newberry, Fl; two sisters, Laura Berry of Charleston and Virginia Neal of Culloden; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren. Inez Louetta Bias Hicks
Inez Louetta Bias Hicks, 74, of Milton, widow of Ross Hicks, died Friday, December 24, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two daughters, Belinda Hicks-Baumgartner of Glenwood, Ark., and Beth Hicks of Columbus, Ohio; and one brother, Eugene Henry Bias of Longbeach, Fla. Graveside service were held at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Ferrell Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Leonard H. Harshbarger, 78, of Culloden, widower of Lillian Olive Bledsoe Harshbarger, died Tuesday, November 23, 1999 in Huntington. He was retired from Union Carbide. Ruth Evelyn Thompkins Heacox
Mrs. Ruth Evelyn Thompkins Heacox, 82, of Ona, died Thursday, November 4, 1999, at her residence. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 6, 1999, at Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born July 27, 1917, in Buffalo, N.Y., a daughter of the late Harold and Helen M. Van Duesen Thompkins. She was a department head for the Niagara County Human Resource Office, Buffalo, N.Y. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Heacox in 1990. Survivors include one daughter, Roberta Barnes of Huntington; two brothers-in-law, David and wife Jerry Heacox, both of Lockport, N.Y., and Major William and Earleen Heacox of San Marcos, Calif.; four grandchildren, Randy Barnes, Roger Barnes and Ronda Barnes, all of Huntington, and Robert and Nancy Barnes of Greenville, S.C.; three great-grandchildren, Robert, Ryan and Tanner Barnes of Greenville, S.C.; several nieces and nephews and a close, dear friend, Mary Magavero.

Evaleen Naomi Hicks
Evaleen Naomi Hicks, 79, of Ona, WV, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Anna’s Care Home, Ona. Funeral services were held on Sunday at 1 pm at Heck Funeral Home with the Rev. Kelson Bays officiating. Burial in Culloden Cemetery. She was born Nov. 8, 1919, a daughter of the late Oather and Hannah Pack Sargent. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Dennis Sargent. She was a retired supervisor for Corbin. She was a member of the Culloden First Missionary Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, John Hicks of Milton; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Jessie Pullen of Elkins, WV; three sisters, Kathleen Sunderland of Huntington, Dorothy Rouse of Charleston and Reba Shifflett of Falls Church, VA; two brothers, Ray Sargent of Hurricane, WV, and Clate Sargent of Culloden; two stepdaughters Rose Karen Courts and Katie Holley, both of Milton; two granddaughters, Sheila Foster and Shanna Shifflett; three greatgrandchildren, Scott Foster, Sarah Jessica Shifflett, and Cameron Shifflett; two stepgrandchildren, Anthony Courts and Jennifer Holley, two step-greatchildren, Tyler and Amber Courts; and several nieces and nephews. Margaret Helene Born Hines
Margaret Helene Born Hines, of Milton, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999 at Putnam General Hospital. Graveside services were be held Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, by Mr. Raymond Clark. She was born Oct. 1, 1905 in Charlottesville, Va., a daughter of the late Gustave and Ruth Davis Born. She was a homemaker and a member of Main Street Church of Christ in Hurricane, W.Va. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemary Purdy. Survivors include a daughter, Louise Blanks of Milton; two grandsons, Anthony Blanks of Milton, Dale Gregory of Homestead, Fla., and a son-in-law, Harold Gregory of St. Augustine, Fla. Robert Larry Harless
Robert Larry Harless, 52, of Barboursville, husband of Janet Powell Harless, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born Feb. 10, 1947 in Huntington, the son of Genevieve Williamson Cardwell of Huntington and the late William D. Harless. He served in the U.S. Army and was a construction worker. He was preceded in death by one son, William D. Harless. He is held in loving memory by his wife, his mother and three daughters and one son-in-law, Kathy Harless of Fredricksburg, Va., Teresa Cardwell of Barboursville, Kelly and Brian Marcum of Barboursville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Larry Harless and Scott and Kim Smith, all of Huntington; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth Ann and Odell Nicely of Huntington, Gloria and Roland Castle of Frederick, Md., Lisa and Jim Blake of Barboursville; one stepbrother, Danny Cardwell of Barboursville; five grandsons, Jason, Derrick, and Jeremy Black, Cody Cardwell, and William Jordan Harless; four granddaughters, Alex and Erin Smith, Mikayla Rose and Taylor Marcum, and a host of friends, loved ones, and relatives. Hayward W. Hefner
Hayward W. Hefner, 77, of Barboursville, passed away Wednesday, Sept 1, 1999 at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Sept. 3, 1999 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Dane Armstrong. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. He was born April 13, 1922 in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., a son of the late Howard Lee and Joanna Bennett Hefner. He was a member of Green Valley Baptist Bible Church, a member of WV Labor Union #543, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Lucille Nicely Hefner, five brothers and two grandchildren, Rondal Nicely and Mary Hutchinson. He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Greg Porter of Barboursville, Brenda and Connie Thornton of Huntington, Tammy and Scott Hutchinson of Milton; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Ronald and Kay Nicely of Proctorville, Ohio, Hayward Hefner, Jr. of Barboursville; two sisters and four brothers, eight grandchildren, Misty Woodard, Chris Nicely and his wife Brenda, Shauna Hefner, Sarah Dorton and her husband James, Nathan Hefner, Timothy Thornton, Jasmine Hutchinson and Joseph Hutchinson, two great-grandchildren, Jamie Woodard and Kirsten Kizzee; and a host of good friends.

Carla G. Huffman
Carla G. Huffman, 66, of Ona, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Stephen Jeffrey. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born Aug. 10, 1933, in Bland, Virginia, a daughter of the late Watson and Faye Francis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Junior Huffman. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Keith Keesee of Ona, W.Va., and Gayle and Lee Hicks of Ochlocknee, Ga.; three brothers, Larry Francis, Gary Francis and Bud Francis, all of Indiana; five grandchildren, Brian, Penny, Melissa, Kim and Jennifer; four great-grandchildren, Ryan, Coty, Branden and Shannon; and her stepmother, Edythe Francis of Beech Grove, Ind.

Thomas F. Hanks
Thomas Franklin Hanks, 65, of Milton died Wednesday in Veterans Administration Medical Center, Huntington. He was a former truck driver. Survivors include two sisters, Myrtle Meadows of Milton and Nancy Hanks; and three brothers, Joe Hanks of Barboursville, Albert Hanks of Missoula, Mont., and Robert Hanks of Trenton, N.J. Funeral was held Saturday, August 14, at Heck Funeral Home; burial in Bias Chapel Cemetery.

Roy E. Hodges
Roy E. Hodges, 69, of 2506 Kirby Road, Milton, went to be with his precious Savior on Aug. 16, 1999. He was born on Sept. 12, 1929. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Mary E. (Libby) Hodges. He was a retired security officer with Huntington Alloys Inc. Survivors include a daughter, Sherry L. Gallaher and her husband Jim of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a son Steven R. Hodges of Milton; two granddaughters, Tracy M. Belman and her husband Travis, and Shelly D. Gallaher; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley E. Belman. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha A. Hodges; his parents, Elvin and Lena Mae Hodges; two brothers, Alva and James Hodges; and three sisters, Mildred Stevens, Margaret Burgess and Anna Mae Orme. His kind heart, spirit of love, and enthusiasm for life will be a heritage left to all who knew him. His family feels blessed to have had him in their lives and are looking forward to one day walking with him on streets of gold. His memory will remain forever in their hearts. Special thanks to family, friends and neighbors, who have helped through this difficult time. The family would especially like to extend a sincere word of deep gratitude and love to the Edmunds family: Dale, Rosalie, Kimberly, Ashley, Tammy, Kali and Alex for their everlasting love and support demonstrated in everything that you have done and continue to do. Russell Houchin
Russell Houchin, 95, of Huntington, WV, died Sunday, August 8, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at Tuesday, August 10, 1999, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Carl Merritt. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. He was born July 17, 1904, in Ona, a son of the late Charles E. and Lula Houchin. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Leslie, Charles Leroy “Roy”, Ora H., and Francis E. Houchin and one sister, Mildred Nance. Pallbearers were Glen Merritt, Don Merritt, Jason Merritt, Ronnie Adkins, Ron Adkins, Jr., and Stanley Thompson. The family would like to extend special thanks to the Glen Merritt Family for their friendship and thoughtfulness.

Jewel V. Hicks
Mrs. Jewel V. Hicks, 89, of Culloden, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord Friday, July 9, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 12 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with her pastor, Rev. Claude L. Spurlock officiating. Burial in Culloden Cemetery. Jewell was born in Putnam County on Feb. 11, 1910. She was a daughter of the late George and Lillian Kilgore Hinkley. Jewell was also preceded in death by her husband, Garland O. Hicks and a son, Paul E. Hicks. She was a homemaker and a member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Culloden. Jewell is survived by three daughters, Ann Hicks, Xylphia Hicks and Margaret Booth and one son, Richmond Hicks, all of Culloden; three grandchildren, Charlotte Lester of Culloden, Mary Murphy of Hurricane and Pam Boyett of Moore, Okla.; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Aileen Kinder Huffman
Mrs Aileen E. Kinder Huffman, 94, of Columbus, OH, formerly of Huntington, died Thursday, June 24, 1999. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 26, 1999 at Beard Mortuary with the Rev. Peter Sierson officiating. Burial in Milton Cemetery. She was born March 13, 1905, in Milton, WV, a daughter of the late George and Fanny Ramsey Kinder. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Virgil L. Huffman. She was a member of Highlawn Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn H. and Donald Crouch of Columbus, OH; two grandchildren, Melissa Kay Crouch and Stephen P. Crouch, both of Columbus; and several nieces.

JORETTA MAE HOSKINS
Joretta Mae Hoskins, 61, of Barboursville, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at Henson Mortuary with the Rev. Craig Coster and Dr. David Lemming officiating. Burial in White Memorial Gardens. She was born April 16, 1938, in Lawrence County, Ohio, the daughter of the late William Boyd and Mrs. Ethel Stormes Boyd of Coal Grove, Ohio. She was a graduate of St. Mary's School of Nursing, a CRNA with Huntington Anesthesiology Group, a member of Barboursville Baptist Church and a member of the American Nurses Association. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, William George Boyd. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Charles D. "Don" Hoskins; one son and daughter-in-law, C.D. and Patty Hoskins of Barboursville; one daughter, Cheryl Hoskins of St. Simons Island, Ga.; one brother, John David Boyd of Ironton, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Madison and Hunter Hoskins of Barboursville. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington.

WILLIAM AUGUSTUS HARLESS
William Augustus Harless, 87, of Rt. 1, Barboursville, son of the late William Hamilton and Anna Pauly Harless, passed away Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Putnam General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Minister Bud Lucas. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born March 22, 1912 in Lincoln County. He was retired from ACF Industries for many years. He was a lifelong Christian and was formerly a lay minister of the Church of Christ. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Violet Memphis Weatherholt Harless. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William Dale and Lora Pridemore Harless of Culloden; one daughter and son-in-law, Judith Ann Harless Taylor and Frank Clifton Taylor II of Middletown, Ohio; two granddaughters and their husbands, Kari Harless Wenck and Kevin Wenck of Culloden, Wanda Taylor Thacker and Jerry Thacker; one grandson and his wife, Frank Glifton Taylor III and his wife Julie Stillwell Taylor, of Cincinnati, Ohio; one great-granddaughter, Sarah Lynn Thacker, one great-grandson, Joshua Michael Thacker, one step-great-grandson, William Tyler Coyner; two sisters, Dicie Elen Gibson of Barboursville, Sybil Harless Convery of Proctorville, Ohio; one brother, Sydney Harless of Ewington, Ohio; one special niece and her husband, Wilma Spencer Johnson and Ishmael Johnson of Rockport, WV; and many other nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. His life was a beacon to all who knew him, and he will be sorely missed by them all.

MRS. ALICE VIRGINIA HOWARD
Mrs Alice Virginia Howard, 77, of Huntington, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999 at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 28,1999 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Judy Carney. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born July 16, 1921 in Wayne County, a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Louella May Hatten Cliff. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Stanley Howard. She is survived by one daughter, Helen Teresa Smith of Suffield, Ohio; two sisters, Lula May Rowe of St. Petersburg, Fla., Ann Smith of Charleston, S.C.; four brothers, Howard Cliff of Huntington, Frank and Phil Cliff of Macon, Ga., and David Cliff of Illinois; three grandchildren, Daniel David Smith, Sr., Terry M. Smith, and Connie Hope Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Rachel Lynn Smith, Daniel David Smith, Jr., and Kathryn Elizabeth Smith.
