Richard Alan Swann, 50, of Barboursville, WV, left University of Kentucky Medical Center, December 23, 1999 to be with the Lord. He was greeted by many loved ones. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 28, 1999 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville. Burial in Swann Cemetery. He was born January 14, 1949 in Huntington a son of the late Woodrow and Pauline Dailey Swann. He was an employee of CSX Transportation, a member of Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, Huntington Archery Club, WV Bowhunters Association, Mountaineer Sportsmans Gun Club and the I. O. O. F. #64 Huntington. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Reba Morrison Swann; one daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Eric Lingenfelter of Barboursville; one son, Steve Swann at home; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie and Lanny King of Salt Rock, Joann Walker and Pat and Wane Bowen, all of Barboursville; one granddaughter who brought him much joy, Emily Paige Lingenfelter and a host of loving friends. Isaiah 40-31 “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not be weak.”

Homer L. Salmon
Homer L. Salmon, 79, of Milton, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Milton United Methodist Church of which he was a member, with Rev. Keith Leap officiating. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. Homer was born at Hamlin, W.Va., on Nov. 19, 1919. He was a son of the late Oscar and Clara Moore Salmon. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Millie L. Bays. Homer was active in the Milton United Methodist Church, having served as a Sunday School Teacher and Trustee. He retired in 1978 from Union Carbide, Institute, W.Va. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis Jacks Salmon; a sister, Lula A. Bradford of Huntington; a brother, Leonard A. Salmon of Grove City, Ohio, and a host of other family and friends. The family suggests memorials to the Milton United Methodist Church, Church and Smith Streets, Milton, WV, 25541 in lieu of flowers. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jo Stephens
Mary Jo Stephens, 82, of Huntington, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999 in Chateau Grove Nursing Home, Barboursville. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 20, 1999 at Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, by Revs. Dana and Jean Sutton. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born April 8, 1917 in Yawkey, Lincoln County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Frank E. and Stella Riggs Grass. She was an instructor at Marshall Laboratory School, and for many years was Youth Director of the Huntington-Cabell County American Red Cross, and was a member of Bates Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Stephens was also preceded by her husband, Robert E. Stephens in 1974 and a brother, Frank Riggs Grass. Survivors include one sister, Ruth Grass Adkins Bolar of Oklahoma, City, Okla.; two nieces, Anne Abington of Clearwater, Fla. and Mary Ellen Adkins Herring of Atlanta, Ga.; and one nephew, Dr. Frank S. Grass of Charlotte N.C. Donations may be made to the building fund of Bates Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Alberta Stowers
Mrs. Alberta Stowers, 89, of Milton W.Va, passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept 20 at Heck Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Leap officiating. Burial in the Milton Cemetery. Alberta was born in Lincoln County on Aug. 3, 1910. She was a daughter of the late Reason and Rosa Verna Johnson Wheeler. Alberta was also preceded in death by her husband, Murrell Stowers, and by a daughter, Alma Hill. She was a member of the Milton United Methodist Church and a retired employee of the Cabell County Board of Education. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Norma Jean and Jack Goodall of Huntington and Sharon and John Williams of Milton and three sons and two daughters-in-law, Rondel Stowers of Las Vegas, Nev, Roy and Johanna Stowers of Chesterfield, Va., and Lewis and Mary Stowers of Lansing, Kan.; 14 grandchildren and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Eva Scarberry
Mrs. Eva Scarberry, 90, of Lesage, W.V, widow of Thomas Jefferson Scarberry, went to rest with her Lord Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Rev. Doug Spurlock officiated. Burial in the Union Ridge Cemetery, Glenwood. Eva was born in Cabell County on Feb. 1, 1909. She was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Bailey Henry. Eva was also preceded in death by brothers, Clyde, Clarence, Chester and Lester Henry; one sister, Myrtle Mounts; two granddaughters, Geneva Hanna and Donna Carter; two sons-in-law, Rex Underwood and Ray Hanna; and one daughter-in-law, Janice Scarberry. She is survived by six daughters, Eloise Scarberry, Rosa Scarberry, Patricia Scarberry, Delores Roten, Ella Underwood and Ruby Hanna, all of Lesage; two sons, Rex Scarberry of Lesage and James Scarberry of Ona; ten grandchildren, Danny Hanna, Jimmy Hanna, Mark Scarberry, Angela Barrett, Dwayne Scarberry, Scott Scarberry, Rex Allen Scarberry, Barbara Chapman, Kellie King and Tammy Justin; 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, Chancey Henry of Ona; a host of nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Albert Edgar Snider
Albert Edgar Snider, 73, of Barboursville, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999 at the Huntington Veterans Administration Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 21, 1999 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park He was born Dec. 30,1925 in Cabell County, a son of the late Guy and Alma Kuhn Snider. He was retired from Sears. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of American Legion #177. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Emery, Don, and Clifford Snider. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Clark Snider; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Randy Bishop of Lawrenceville, Georgia and Brenda and Brett Bailey of Valrico, Florida; one son, Dale Snider of Barboursville; two sisters, Joan White of Huntington and Barbara Dunkle of Barboursville; two brothers Jerry, Snider of Huntington, and Raymond Snider of Kokomo, Indiana, six grandchildren, Shane Snider and wife Tammy of Columbus, Brooke Snider of Huntington, Trisha McCullah and husband Billy of Lawrenceville, Lauren Bailey and Kendra Bailey, both of Valrico, and Mark Bishop of Lawrenceville; and one great-grandson Will McCullah of Lawrenceville.

Mildred Lee Rose Lang Shortt
Mildred Lee Rose Lang Shortt, 85, of Ona, widow of Randolph K Shortt, died Tuesday, August 10, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospital She was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Maurice “Tim” Lang of Summersville; one daughter, Anne Barham of Aiken, S.C.; one sister, Louise Rose McKeage of Montrose, Pa.; and one brother, Hubert Shan Rose of Hendersonville, Tenn Graveside service was held Saturday, August 14, in Mountain View Cemetery, Marlinton. VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton, was in charge of arrangements. Contributions may be made to Marlinton United Methodist Church Women.

Reverend Finley E. “Ed” Stewart
On the 23rd day of July, 1999, 58-year-old Reverend Finley E. “Ed” Stewart went home to be with the Lord. He was prceded in death by his father and mother Stanley and Garnet Stewart, and one brother Lawrence Stewart. Survivors include his wife Linda and two daughters, Tammy Stewart from Chesapeake, Ohio, and Tena Stewart Thomas from Leon, W.Va., two sons-in-law, Steve Eschleman and William Thomas and four grandchildren, Allen Thomas, Seonta Thomas, Zara Thomas and Zachariah Thomas. Other survivors include three brothers and four sisters. He was a member of Community Baptist Church of Huntington and was an ordained Baptist minister. Ed was a truly kind and gentle soul who was loved by many and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Heck Funeral Home in Milton was in charge of arrangements. Funeral services for Ed were held Sunday at Heck Funeral Home with burial following at Pete Meadows Cemetery in Glenwood, WV.

Doris Lee Cooper Stanley
Mrs. Doris Lee Cooper Stanley, 68, of Proctorville, Ohio, passed away Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Heartland of Riverview Nursing Home. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Craig Coster. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. She was born January 10, 1931, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Russell D. and Garnet Stewart Cooper. She is survived by her husband, Norman Stanley; one daughter and son-in-law, Shari L. and Bill Thomas of Huntington; one sister and brother-in-law, Helen Louise and Bunk Perry of Barboursville; four grandchildren, Jared Thomas, Josiah Thomas, Hannah Thomas, and Seth Thomas; and two nieces, Connie Blankenship and Tracy Gooch. Timothy Joseph Spade, 36, of Culloden, died Tuesday in Putnam General Hospital. He was a former employee of Rust Equipment of Culloden. Survivors include his mother, Nell F. Spade of Culloden; one son, Timothy Joseph Spade Jr. of Culloden; two daughters, Shannon Spade and Mandy Spade, both of Virginia; two stepdaughters, Melissa Willis and Audra Willis, both of Culloden; one sister, Betty Sue Barnett of Amherst, Va.; and three brothers, Norvell “Sam” Spade of Cross Lanes, Richard A. Spade of Warrenton, Va., and Jeffrey D. Spade of Culloden. Funeral was held Friday, July 2, 1999 at Chapman Funeral Home Chapel, Teays Valley; burial Zoar Cemetery.

Dennis C. “Denny” Shaw
Dennis C. “Denny” Shaw, 76, of Ona, WV died Wednesday, July 14, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington of a heart attack. Funeral services were conducted on. Saturday, July 17 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Fred Lunsford officiating. Burial in Bexfield Cemetery, Milton. Denny was born in Cabell Co. on April 21, 1923. He was a son of the late James A. and Mary Helen Adams Shaw. Denny was also preceded in death by four brothers, James, Leo, Andrew and Johnny Shaw. He was retired from Barboursville Clay Mfg., Barboursville, WV and a member of Beulah Ann Baptist Church, Ona. He is survived by his wife, Leoma Bledsoe Shaw, one brother, Sam Shaw of Ona; four sisters, Margaret Sandmayr of Loveland, OH, Agnes Darst and Josephine Day both of Bellevue, KY and Cecelia Shaw.

Lexie Louise Smith
Lexie Louise Smith, 92, of Huntington, died Saturday, June19, 1999 in Heritage Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was a retired employee for Pilgrim Laundry. Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Ann Donahoe of South Point, Ohio, and Marlen Sue Wilder of Huntington. Graveside services at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Milton. There was no visitation. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Anthony L. Sowards
Anthony L. Sowards, 45, of Hurricane, died Sunday, June 27, 1999 at his residence. Survivors include his mother, Loretta Gipson Sowards of Hurricane; three sisters, Cheryl Sowards of Hurricane, Donna Buchanan of Akron, Ohio, and Tina Duvall of Cleveland; three brothers, Jeffery Sowards and Darrell Sowards, both of Hurricane, and David Sowards of Mount Olive. JAMES SHARP
James Sharp, 78, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Saturday, April 3, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Huntington. Funeral services were conducte Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Monty Brown. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. He was born April 20,1920, in Huntington, a son of the late James J. and Ida L. Chapman Sharp. He was a retired rural mail carrier for the Barboursville Post Office; served seven years in the U.S. Navy during World War II; a member of Orchard Hills Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors; a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita E. Hall; and two grandsons, Matthew Luke Sharp and John Corbet Sharp. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Shirley Eck Sharp; one sister, Loretta Leighty of Winfield, W.Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Connie Sharp of Barboursville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sunny and Fred Hammers, Jill and Gerald Asbury, Penny and Kris Jones, all of Barboursville; grandchildren include Sean 'Corky' Hammers and his wife, Beth "Buffy" Meghann Hammers, Kenny and Billy Jones, Jake and Joey Sharp, Summer, Tara and Carlee Villars, Emily Asbury; and his little buddy, Charlie, all of Barboursville. Military graveside rites were conducted by the V.F.W. #9738, Huntington.

RICHARD PAUL SCHER
Richard Paul Scher, 77, Barboursville, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born Dec. 24, 1921 in Belington, W.Va., a son of the late Miltford M. and Lucy Markwood Scher. He was a talented songwriter and music was his wife and love. He was a volunteer at the Prestera Mental Health Center and was active in many community services advocating for people's rights. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Markwood Mason Scher. He is survived by one sister, Alice A. Robinson of Knoxville, Tenn.; a special friend, John Davies; one nephew, three nieces, three great-nieces, five great-nephews, two great-great-nephews, and one great-great-niece. Memorial contributions may be made to Prestera Mental Health Center. Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. He was loved and will be missed by many.

Norman Earl Sheppard
Norman Earl Sheppard, 69, of Winter Haven, Florida formerly of Milton, WV, died May 4, 1999, at James A. Halley Veterans Hospital in Tampa. Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 7, 1999 at Mitchell-Harden Funeral Home in Winter Haven. Burial at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Norman was born August 11, 1929, in Myrtle, Mingo County, WV. He is the son of the late Pierce and Bertha Hayes Sheppard. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers, Annetta Hatfield, Vernie Clagg Blankenship, Marie Sheppard, Rush "Rusty" Sheppard and William "John" Sheppard. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, VFW and American Legion Post 8. He was a World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Keeler Sheppard; two daughters, Mary Jane Adkins of Huntington, WV, and Joyce Renee Gilkerson of Paintsville, KY; one brother, Fredrick Sheppard of Crossville, TN; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Charles Ronald Spradling
Charles Ronald Spradling, 67, of Barboursville died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at Henson Mortuary with the Rev. Ralph Cazad officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens with V.F.W. Post #9738 conducting graveside services. He was born March 22, 1932, in Cabell County, WV, a son of the late James B. and Elizabeth Scott Spradling. He was formerly employed with Huntington Mall, presently employed with Big Lots, Eastern Heights, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Cecil Spradling. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Cook Spradling; one stepson, Fred Ray Collins of Sedalia, Ohio; three stepdaughters, Carolyn Plybon of Washington Court House, Ohio, Joyce Cook of Barboursville and Brenda Kay Cook of Huntington; five sisters, Virginia Morris and Rose Johnson, both of Norfolk, Va., Mary Johnson of Pensacola, Fla., Carolyn Kessler and Ruth Spradling, both of Barboursville; four brothers, Ed Spradling and John Spradling, both of Barboursville, George Spradling of Huntington and Jackie Spradling of Norfolk; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Leona N. Sims, 83, of Milton, widow of Ray Forest Sims, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999. Survivors include two daughters, Delores Bellow of DeBary, Fla., and Frances Hickman of Milton; and two sons, Ronald Sims of Proctorville, Ohio, and Samuel Ray Sims of Middleburg, Fla. Melisha “Missie” Elonda Blackwell Thompson
Melisha “Missie” Elonda Blackwell Thompson, 30, of Huntington, wife of Eric Shawn Thompson, died Monday, November 8, 1999, in Huntington. Survivors include her mother, Dixie Thompson Blackwell of Huntington; sons, Brandon Lee Adkins, Anthony Scott Adkins and Eric Shawn Thompson II; three sisters, Johnie Lou Coler and Betsy Buffa, both of Ohio, and Carla Sue Johnson of Huntington; three brothers, Linzie Shane Blackwell of Goldsboro, N.C., Robert Lee Blackwell of Huntington and Harold William Blackwell of Roanoke, Va. Aurelia Credle Toler
Aurelia Credle Toler, 76, of Barboursville, passed away Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999 at Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church, Barboursville, by Pastor Elaine Rhodes. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born Sept. 22, 1922 in Blacksburg, Va., a daughter of the late Fenner X. and Grace Aurelia Daniel Credle. She was a member of Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church, for approximately 50 years, where she was a former deacon and elder. She as also a member of the DAR, and previous member of the Barboursville Woman’s Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack W. Toler. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, J.W. “Bill” and Connie Toler of Ona, W.Va., and Bruce and Beverly Toler of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Lucille Martin and Carolyn Lovell, both of Virginia; three grandchildren, Aurelia Jill Simpson of Morena Valley, Calif., Candace Renee Houge of Barboursville, and Ashley Brook Toler of West Palm Beach, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Jasmine M. Simpson, Devin Aurelia Simpson, and Alexander Simpson, all of California; Raleigh Grace Hogue and Andrew Dillon Hogue, both of Barboursville. Survivors include four daughters, Bettie Brumfield and Cleora Wood, both of Ashton, Juanita Keblesh of Akron, Ohio, and Susan Conrad of Milton; And one son, Charles M. Taylor of Ashton. Essie M. Thompson
Essie M. Thompson, 80, of Salt Rock, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 14, 1999 at St. Mary’s hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 17, 1999 at the Madison United Baptist Church by the Reverend Walter Adkins and Reverend Robert Hatfield. Burial in Green Valley Cemetery. She was born May 28, 1912 in Cabell County, a daughter of the late William Walter and Sarah Rachel Harless Baker. She was a member of Madison United Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Warden Thompson; four brothers, Roy, Andrew, Wetzel, and Charlie Baker, three sisters, Odessa Johnson, Erma Poston, and Dulcie White; and one special brother-in-law, Dallas Jack Thompson. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, L.J. and Dreama Thompson, Boyce and Charlotte Thompson, all of Salt Rock; three sisters, Ercie Elkins of Whitesville, Irene Parsons of West Hamlin, and Virginia Parsons of Huntington; four sisters-in-law, Marie Thompson and Martha Baker, both of Branchland, Emma Sammons of Crum, and Gertie Davis of West Hamlin; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-two greatgrandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Ethel Gertrude Ushman
Ethel Gertrude Ushman, 93, of Culloden, W.Va. went to be with her Lord, Tuesday, Sept 7, 1999. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Sept. 10, 1999 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Dr. Thomas J. DuBose officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, W.Va. Grandsons served as pallbearers. She was born Aug. 2I, 1906 in Persinger, W.Va., a daughter of the late John and Dora Malcolm Lambert. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Ushman, on Aug. 24, 1989. She was a sales clerk for Stone and Thomas, Clarksburg, W.Va. She was a member of the Milton Baptist Church where she was active in the Home Department and Circles. Survivors include two daughters, Juanita Lowe of Chapmanville, W.Va., and Dorothy Edwards of Hurricane, W.Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Lynda Williams of Ona, W.Va., and Don and Lucy Williams of Chapmanville, W.Va.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was born June 28, 1923, in Cincinnati, Ohio, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Louise Ellerman Moorman. Rev. Lafayette Frenchman Vinson
Rev. Lafayette Frenchman Vinson, 75, of Barboursville, passed away Thursday, November 11, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born December 13, 1923, in Wayne County, Lincoln District, West Virginia, a son of the late Daniel Wellington and Anna Audron Williams Vinson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Viola Vinson Rowley, a brother, Lewis Edward Vinson and a nephew, Jan Nelson Rowley.
He is survived by his wife, Sadie Lyvon Whitt Vinson of Barboursville; three nieces, Debra Ann Vinson Tourville and Nancy Sharon Vinson Arkkelein, both of Sacramento, CA, and Sue Carol Rowley Hopperstead of Pipe Creek, Texas; two nephews, Gary, Lewis Vinson and Dale Edward Vinson, both of Sacramento, CA; several great-nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lafayette attended Vinson Branch Grade School and Fort Gay High School, graduating in 1940, and attended Fort Benjamin Harrison Citizens Military Training Camp and the Civilian Conservation Corps. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, October 10, 1941, and retired as a Commissioned Warrant Officer, W-2 October 1, 1970. Lafayette earned the following medals while serving: Good Conduct (sixth award), American Defense, American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific Theater (one star), China Service, Navy Occupation (Japan), World War II Victory, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal. During his naval career, Lafayette served at Recruit Training and Naval Communications school, Norfolk, VA, Navy Radio Station, New York City, USS Panamint (AGC-13), USS Gen. WM. Mitchell (Ap-114), Staff Commander Naval Forces Far East (USS APL-46), U.S. Naval Reserve Training Center, Austin, TX, USS Agerholm (DD-826), U.S. Naval Radio Station, Cheltenham, MD, U.S. Navy Radio Station, Cape May, N.J., U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill., U.S. Naval Station Midway Island, U.S. Naval Air Station, Memphis, TN, Staff Commander Desron 28 (USS Robert A. Owens DD), USS Morton (DD-948), USS Kidd (DEE 661).
After his naval career, Lafayette worked for the Corps of Engineers, Memphis District, Radio Corporation of America aboard the USNS Gen. II. H. Arnold T-AGM-9 and USNS Gen. H. S. Vandenberg T-AGM-10, Dispatcher Ocala Fire Department, Ocala, Fla. Lafayette was a Ky. Colonel, a member of the Masonic Lodge, Vinson # 66, A.F. & A.M. over 50 years, member of the Order of Eastern Star #304, Austin, TX, life member of the Retired Officers Association, Fleet Reserve Association Member at Large. Lafayette accepted God's call to ministry November 1981, and was a member of the United Methodist Church. He served as Pastor at Prichard Circuit, Smith Memorial, Shiloh, Bellomy Chapel, Dillon Chapel United Methodist Church, Fairfield United Methodist Church and Historic Guyandotte United Methodist Church. Lafayette retired from the church in June 1988, but served as pastor for ten years until June 1998. Celebration of Life services were conducted Sunday, November 14, 1999, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Martha Ognibene. Music was be provided by the Tri-State Dulcimer Society. Burial and Masonic graveside services were conducted by Vinson Lodge #66, Monday, November 15, 1999, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Eastern Star services were conducted on Saturday, November 13th. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dillon Chapel United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 4423 16th Street, Huntington, WV 25701.

Mary Ruth Venoy
Mary Ruth Venoy, 83, of Barboursville, died Sunday, October 10, 1999, at Putnam General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday, October 15, 1999, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Carl Merritt. Burial in Enon Cemetery. She was born April 6, 1916, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Zinnia Bias Bledsoe. She was a member of the Hebron Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Lester “Pete” Venoy. She is survived by two daughters, Delores Mills of Lesage, W.Va., and Judith Kelly of Hagerman, New Mexico; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Eugene M. (Don) Varney
Mr. Eugene M. (Don) Varney, 68, of Ona, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Rick Glass. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Feb. 5, 1931 in Delbarton, WV, a son of the late Joseph and Hilda Chafin Varney. He was president and owner of Varney Door Company, Barboursville. He was a member of Connelly Memorial Church of Delbarton, a member of the National Garage Door Association and Home Builders Association. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marines. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Varney. He is survived by his wife, Betty Baisden Varney; one daughter, Pamela Varney of Ona; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael Varney of Huntington, Steven Varney of Lexington, KY, Kevin and June Varney of Paris, KY; one sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Charles Tingler of Lenore, WV; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Ozella Varney of Barboursville, Joe and Marion Varney of Jacksonville, Fla., and Maggie Varney; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Aaron, and Olivia Varney of Paris, Ky.; and a host of special nieces, nephews and friends. Pallbearers were Coy Adkins, Don Jordan, Tuffy Harshbarger, Keith Moore, Leo Moore, and Mark Butcher. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016 or to the charity of your choice.

CASSIDY NICOLE and CHEYENNE HOPE VAN DEVENDER-SCARBERRY
Cassidy Nicole and Cheyenne Hope Van Devender-Scarberry, infant daughters of Thomas S. Scarberry and Gemma Linn Van Devender of Barboursville, W.Va., died shortly after birth Monday, March 29, 1999 in Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington. Graveside funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 1, at Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington, W.Va., with Pastor Robert Stanley officiating. Additional survivors include the paternal grandparents, Ronald and Kristy Sliger Scarberry of Ona, W.Va.; the maternal grandparents, Jim Van Devender and Irene Lewis of Huntington and Sharon Joyce Reynolds of Clarksburg, W.Va,; an aunt and uncle, Karlie and Todd Carter and their children, Casey, Caleb and Britteny, all of Oklahoma City, Okla. There was no visitation. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Sylvia Carrier Wallace
Sylvia Carrier Wallace, 84, of Culloden, WV, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999 in St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 27 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Rev. Junior Smith officiating. Burial in the Ball Family Cemetery, Milton. Sylvia was born at Tornado, WV, on Aug. 26, 1915. She was a daughter of the late Newton and Virgie Hedrick Carrier. Sylvia was also preceded in death by two daughters, Phyllis Settle and Peggy Chapman; a son, James Wallace; four grandchildren and on Sept. 5, 1973 by her husband, Elmer “Coon” Wallace. She was the oldest member of Good Hope Baptist Church, Milton and attended Sousanah Freewill Baptist Church, Culloden. Sylvia was a retired cook from Morris Memorial Hospital, Milton and St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. She is survived by three daughters, Juanita Cales of Culloden, Carolyn Hill of Huntington and Patricia Settle of Holiday, TX; two sons, Ted Wallace of Culloden and Larry Wallace of Kings Mountain, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and one brother, William Carrier of Milton.
