Hazel Helen Cremeans Ross Shirkey, 72, of Ona, currently residing in Cross Lanes, passed into a new life on Jan. 3, 2000, at the residence of her son. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000 at Heck Home with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating and Rev. Jackie Walker and Rev. Danny Ross assisting. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. She was born April 12,1927, in Salt Rock, WV, a daughter of the late Rev. Richard E. and Esther E. Dunfee Cremeans. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Percy Ross, and her second husband, Cecil W. Shirkey, her sister, Edna Kapla and brother Clifford Cremeans. She was a retired nurse's aide at Morris Memorial Nursing Home. She was a member of Beulah Ann Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Percy D. and Janet Ross of Cross Lanes, WV, and James R. and Joyce Ross of Ona, WV; three sisters, Mary West of Wyoming, MI, Polly Walker of Salt Rock, WV, and Ruth Holt of Winchester, TN; one brother and sister-in-law, Ervie and Carolyn Cremeans of Culloden; three grandchildren, Paul Ross and wife, Leesa, Benjamin Ross, and Bethany Ross.
Maxine Lewis
Maxine Lewis, 78, of Birmingham, Ala., formerly of Barboursville and Huntington, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at home. She was retired from Heck's Department Stores. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel. Burial in Spring Valley Memory Gardens. She was born May 9, 1921, a daughter of the late Cloves and Blanche Topping Blankenship. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Baxter “Buck” Lewis, a sister, Jewel Sullivan, and a brother, Woodrow Blankenship. Survivors are one daughter, Sandra Call and two granddaughters, Julie Blair and her husband Donald, and Stephanie Call, all of Birmingham, Ala., and a special cousin Lauren Poe of Barboursville.
Lillian Pearl Meadows Gillespie
Mrs. Lillian Pearl Meadows Gillespie, 91, of Lexington, KY, formerly of Mason Co., WV died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000 in the Sunbridge Health Care, Lexington. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 7 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Rev. Jackie D. Clark officiating. Burial in the Lunsford Cemetery, Milton, WV. Lillian was born in Mason Co. on Jan. 7, 1908. She was a daughter of the late Sim Robert and Mary Florence Davis Meadows. Lillian was also preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Woods; two sisters, Esther Rooper and Clara Ferrell and on Jan. 19, 1949 by her husband, Charles Elmer Gillespie. She is survived by a daughter, Eloise Gill of Lexington, KY; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren and three sisters, Reba Rooper of Teays Valley, WV, Wilma Bennett of Hurricane, WV and Evelyn Lusher of Fenton, OH.
Betty G. Edens
Betty Grace Crowder Edens, 76, of Poca died January 17, 2000, in St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, after a short illness.
She was a member of Kanawha Two Mile Gospel Tabernacle and attended Sugar Creek Community Church.
Surviving: son, Jack of Poca; daughter, Susie Taylor of Poca; sister, Mary Skeen of Charleston; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held January 20, 2000 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, Charleston, with the Rev. William Layne Jr. and the Rev. Gary Newhouse officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Xenil V. Marker
Xenil V. Marker, 85, of Hurricane died January 17, 2000, in Canada's Personal Care Home, Winfield.
She was a member of Hurricane First Church of the Nazarene and was a homemaker.
Surviving: son, the Rev. Charles L. Marker of Pt. Pleasant; daughters, Awilda Johnson and Gale Berry, both of Hurricane; sister, Faye Smith of St. Albans; brothers, Hillard McCallister of Scott Depot and Oral McCallister of Hurricane; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Service was held January 20, 2000 at Hurricane First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Charles L. Marker, the Rev. Jim Baker and the Rev. Phil Bower officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Forest J. Grant, 84, of Bancroft died January 20, 2000, at home after a short illness.
He was retired from American Viscose, Nitro, a lifelong resident of Putnam County, and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Nitro, and Upper Vandalia Historical Society.
Surviving: nephews, Thomas G. Grant of Nitro and Dr. Michael Grant of Fairmont.
Service was held January 22, 2000 at Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, with the Rev. Larry Walker officiating. Burial was in Hodge Cemetery, Hurricane.
David E. Sigmon
Pastor David E. Sigmon, 51, of Hurricane died January 18, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
He was owner of Valley Marine, St. Albans, and was pastor of Coal Mountain Church of God, Hurricane. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Surviving: wife, Deborah Joan Rogers Sigmon; daughters, Angela Nicole Meinke and Colleen Annette Womack of St. Albans; sisters, Dolly Larch of Wallback, Betty Neil and Mary Mynes, both of Hurricane; brothers, Windell and Paul, both of Hurricane, and John of Mount Sterling, Ohio; two grandchildren.
Service was held January 22, 2000 at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Pastor Brian Haber and Pastor Larry Arbaugh officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Lester Michael Webb, 50, of Hurricane, formerly of South Charleston, died January 21, 2000, at the home of his sister, Jean Schronce of Hurricane, after a long illness.
He was a graduate of West Virginia State College, a former teacher at Dunbar Junior High School and a Navy veteran.
Also surviving: son, Michael A. at home; daughter, Andrea Painter of South Charleston; mother, Mabel Webb Dunaway of Sumerco; sister, Betty Means of Sumerco; brothers, James E. of Maryland, Richard I. of Charleston, William F. and Bobby L., both of South Charleston, Cecil E. of Kansas, Gifford of Southside, and Kenneth D. of Poca.

Thelma E. Craig, 88, of Buffalo died January 20, 2000, at home after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Buffalo Nazarene Church.
Surviving: daughter, Nora Lourie of Buffalo; brothers, the Rev. S.H. Craig and Bruce Craig, both of Buffalo; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Earl E. Slater
Earl Edward Slater, 79, of Buffalo died January 21, 2000, in Pleasant Valley Hospital, Pt. Pleasant, after a long illness.
He was a retired carpenter and member of Carpenters Union Local 128. He was a farmer and a member of Shiloah Baptist Church, Red House, where he was in the Adult Bible Class and served as a church trustee. He was a disabled Army veteran of World War II and a member of the DAV.
Surviving: wife, Florence Stephens Slater; foster son, Lonnie Harmon of Buffalo; sister, Florence Covert of Red House; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held January 24, 2000 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Larry Covert officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Alby Edward Jeffers, 84, of Buffalo died January 23, 2000, at home after a long illness.
He was a retired farmer and mechanic. He was a member of Buffalo Senior Citizens, a 33-year member of Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Buffalo Presbyterian Church.
Surviving: wife, Faye Cornell Jeffers; daughters, Anna Young of Columbus, Ohio, Mary Sayre of Pickerington, Ohio, Sue McKeever of Scott Depot, Debbie Breece of Hurricane, and Susan Truitt of Grimms Landing; sons, Neal of Charleston, Richard of Columbus, Jerry of Robertsburg, and Wayne of Circleville; sisters, Mary Oldaker of Buffalo and Neva Smith of Smithville, Pennsylvania; 27 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

He was born on July 29, 1921 in Milton, WV a son of the late Eric E. and Nannie McCallister Bias. He was a member of the Milton United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Riviera Golf Club, LeSage. He was a member of the Brick Layers Local #5, Huntington. He was a member of the American Legion Post 139, Milton. He was a member of the 1946 Marshall University Basketball team playing alongside Cam Henderson. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Bogar Bias; four sons, Timothy Bias of Peoria, Illinois, Richard Steven Bias of Milton, Ted Bias of Las Vegas, Nevada, Thomas Eric Bias of Milton; one daughter, Elana Martin of Littleton, Colorado; one brother, Eric Bias, Jr. of Richmond, VA; one sister Ruby Bias, of Milton; four grandchildren, Evan Bias, Emily Bias, Hailey Martin, and Claire Martin.

Laymon R. Collins, 71, of St Albans, husband of Betty Collins, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in Thomas Memorial Hospital. He was retired from Union Carbide Corp. and was a real estate agent. She was born December 10, 1946, in Ranger, a daughter of the late Leander and Inez Nelson Williamson and step-daughter of the late Amy Williamson. She is survived by her loving husband, Millard Joseph Pratt, and daughters, Amy Clay, Ona Jeffrey and Mary Ross, sons-in-law, Arthur Clay and Dwane Ross, one grandchild, Keirsten Breann Ross, all of Salt Rock; three stepsons, Mark and Ward Pratt, both of Atlanta, Georgia, Mike Pratt and his wife Pam of Rock Hill, Georgia; four sisters, Mary E. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. He was born Aug. 24, 1927, in Huntington, a son of Marguerite Hickman Johnston of Salt Rock and the late Emory Woolwine. Wanda Cummings Holley
Mrs. Wanda Cummings Holley, 75, of Milton, WV, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000 in St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. Wanda was born July 18, 1924. She was a daughter of the late Hubert C. and Sadie Johnson Cummings. Wanda was also preceded in death on Feb. 13, 1994 by her husband, Robert Lee “Bob” Holley. She was a member of the Milton Baptist Church and a homemaker. She is survived by one daughter, Sandra Drew-Weber of Sheffield Lake, OH; one son, R. Gregory Holley of Orefield, PA and one sister, Eloise Ball of Milton; four grandchildren, Jessica Amber Drew, Brandon Lee Drew, Jonathan Worth Holley and Benjamin Worth Holley and one great granddaughter, Brittany Drew. Private family services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 25. Dr. Thomas J. DuBose officiated. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Harry Frederick “Boney” Baumgardner, 85, of Huntington, passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000 at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000 at Meadows Cemetery. He was born in Milton on November 3, 1914 a son of the late William and Betty White Baumgardner. He was also preceded in his death by his wife Thelma Virginia Baumgardner on Jan. 16, 1988, a daughter, Peggy Ann Longfellow, two brothers, Ralph and William Baumgardner. He was a self-employed mechanic with Baumgardner Garage. He is survived by one daughter, Harriett Freda Ramsey of Huntington, WV; one son, Harry F. Baumgardner, Jr. of Dade City, FL; Seven grandchildren, Heather, Andrea, Andrew, and Brandon Baumgardner, Isaac Ramsey, Jr., Jackie D. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Brian Woodall on July 15, 1999. He was an employee of C&O Railroad and of Steel of West Virginia. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of Union Baptist Church.
