Jeremy Matthew Edwards, 20, of Culloden, passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000 in Kanawha County, WV. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Feb. 2 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. C. Douglas Peters officiating. Burial in Community Cemetery, Culloden. Jeremy was born on Jan. 25, 1980 in Huntington, WV, a son of Matt and Brenda Edwards of Culloden. He was an employee at CIS Grocery Store, Culloden. He was an honor student throughout high school and had made the Dean's List at Marshall University for the last two semesters. He was on the National Honor Society and Who's Who Among American High School Students. Jeremy was elected by the American Legion Post 139, Milton to attend Boys State. In addition to his parents, Jeremy is survived by one brother, Billy Clinton Edwards, at home; his grandmother, Rebecca Edwards of Culloden; and his great grandmother, Martha Sowards of Culloden.
Chrystal Lynn Keesee
Chrystal Lynn Keesee, 23, of Hurricane, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2000 at home. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Ray Vance. Burial in Crook Cemetery. She was born January 16, 1977 in Park Ridge, Illinois, a daughter of Theresa Grill Leadman of Hurricane and the late Carroll Keesee. She is survived by her stepfather, Bill Leadman; one sister, Amber Leadman of Hurricane; two brothers, Bobby Keesee of Hurricane and Teddy Keesee of Huntington; three stepbrothers, Billy, Brian and Wayne Leadman, all of Huntington; and maternal grandparents, Emma and Michael Grill of Cleveland, Ohio.
Stephen G. Chapman
Stephen Gregory Chapman, 29, of Scott Depot, formerly of Bridgeport, died January 23, 2000, at home after a long illness.
He was assistant vice president of loan administration at United National Bank, Charleston, and a graduate of West Virginia University. He was a former secretary-treasurer of Robert Morris Associates, Carolina-Virginia Chapter, a former member of the fund distribution committee for United Way of Kanawha Valley, a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church and the church choir.
Surviving: wife, Kimberly Chapman; parents, William G. and Roberta Chapman of Bridgeport; paternal grandparents, William C. and Neva Chapman of Salem.

Rita M. Murtaugh, 79, of Luling, Louisiana, formerly of Hurricane, died January 21, 2000, in Kenna Regional Hospital after a short illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, St. Albans, and Holy Family Catholic Church, Luling.
Surviving: daughter, Eileen Woodward of Luling; grandchildren, Kelly Smith of Culloden, William Woodward of Hurricane and Adam Woodward of Luling; four great-grandchildren.

Gary Dee “Gibby” Gibson, 65, of Elkton, Maryland, formerly of Hurricane, died January 20, 2000, in Elkton.
He was retired from Chrysler Corp., Newark, with 33 years' service and was a member of the United Auto Workers.

Kathleen E. Manning Hensley, 73, of Hurricane died January 25, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.
She was retired from St. Mary's Hospital with 26 years' service. She was a member of Teays Valley Missionalry Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Hurricane.

Carol Sue Chapman, 66, of Hurricane died January 27, 2000, in the Intensive Care Unit at Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was retired from AIM and a member of Light House Baptist Church, Hurricane.

Nellie C. McVay “Colene” Cole, 72, of Poca died January 27, 2000, at the home of her son, Richard W. McVay of Liberty, after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Poca, a retired housekeeping supervisor from Americare-Dunbar Nusing Home with 11 years' service, a former employee of Poca Supermarket and a member of Poca United Methodist Church.

Marc Lattz, 23, of Poca died January 28, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital, of injuries received in an automobile accident on WV 62 when he lost control of his vehicle.
He was an employee of Taco Bell, Teays Valley, and Tri-State Greyhound Park. He was a graduate of Putnam County Vocational School.

Mrs. Susie Anne Barnett, 93, of Milton, WV went home to be with the Lord Friday, Jan. 28, 2000 at her home. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 1 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Rev. Forrest Cummings officiating. Burial in the Wyant-Irwin Cemetery, Milton. Susie was born in Cabell Co. on Sept. 4, 1906. She was a daughter of the late George and Rosia Cooper Jenkins. Susie was also preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and LeRoy Jenkins and on Aug. 31, 1975 by her husband, Brooklyn Barnett. Susie was a member of the Bias Chapel, Milton and a homemaker. Reta Lester Adkins, 84, of Beech Fork Road, East Lynn, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord from her home on Saturday, January 29, 2000, with her family by her side. She was born Feb. 16,1915, a daughter of the late Enslow and Stella Adkins Lester. She was a member of Wolf Pen Church of Christ and a homemaker. Her husband, Leo Adkins, preceded her in death on Sept 30,1995.
Also preceding her was a daughter, Maxine Adkins; three sisters, Lola Mills, Golda Snider and Ona Sansom; three brothers, Ezra Lester, Emual Lester and Wetzel Lester. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Anthia and Homer Smith, Jr. of East Lynn, W.Va, Route 1 and Stella and Thomas Francis of Lavalette, W.Va.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Rard and Melva Adkins and Emual and Joyce Adkins, all of East Lynn Route 1, Delmer and Sharon Adkins of Proctorville, Ohio, and Sherman and Cheryl Adkins of Huntington WVa.; a sister, Emerine Ramey of Dayton, Ohio; 25 grandchildren; 29 greatgrandchildren. He was the market master at the Cabell County Farmer's Market in Huntington and was an active Democratic Committeeman He was also preceded in death by a baby daughter, Linda Carol Ross. Azel E. McComas
Azel E. McComas, 69, of Barboursville, WV, beloved husband of Essel Barber McComas for forty-seven years, passed away Monday, January 24, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 28, 2000, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor Jerome Matt officiating. Entombment in Good Shepherd Mausoleum, White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born June 20, 1930, in Lawrence County, OH, a son of the late Ezra and Gertrude Adkins McComas. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene McComas, Kyle McComas, and Cline McComas; and two sisters, Lula May Boyd and Janice Steed. He was an employee of Bordens for thirteen years and retired from INCO in 1993. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of VFW Post 9738, whose members served as pallbearers and conducted military graveside rites. He attended Grace Gospel Church and was a member of the Quarter Century Club at INCO. In addition to his wife, survivors include: a daughter, Tina Joann McComas of Huntington; a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Rebekah McComas of Huntington; one grandson and his wife, Brent and Bettina Chaffin of Huntington; one sweet great-grandson, Michael; two sisters, Delephine Moore and Charlotte McComas, both of Huntington; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Edgar and Wanda McComas of Huntington and Ezra Lee and Susie McComas of Michigan; and several nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Angie Pyles of Barboursville, Jerri Adkins and Joyce Moore, both of Huntington, and Tracy Brown of Ohio. She was a member of VFW Post 9097 Ladies Auxiliary and VFW National Home Life.

Deborah Wood Mays, 48, of Scott Depot and her daughter, Jennifer Dawn Wood, 19, died January 30, 2000, of injuries received in an automobile accident on I-64, Putnam County.
Both were members of King's Way Christian Church, Nitro, and were lifelong resident of the Kanawha Valley.
Mays was a kindergarten teacher at Conner Street Elementary School, Hurricane. She received a bachelor's degree in education from West Virginia State College and a master's degree from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies.
Surviving: husband, Albert V. Mays Jr.; son James Wood of Scott Depot; mother, Willa Leen Milhorn of Eleanor; father, John H. McKinney of St. Albans; sister, Nancy Rennie of Spring, Texas; one niece and one nephew.
Wood was a nursing student at the University of Charleston, a graduate of Teays Valley Christian School and a member of the 1998 National Bible Bowl championship team in St. Louis.

Joseph A. Taylor Sr., 87, of Poca died January 31, 2000, in Serenity Valley Personal Care Home, Hometown, after a long illness.
He was a retired carpenter from Union Carbide and formerly served on the Union Carbide Credit Union's board of directors. He was former mayor of Poca and a deacon and Sunday school superintendent at Poca Baptist Church.

She was a member of Bancroft Church of God Mission and the Hometown Senior Citizens.
Surviving: daughters, Barbara Booth of Buffalo and Glenda Perry of Eleanor; sons, Douglas of Ohio and Clyde of Kenova; sisters, Freida Steele of Conyers, Georgia, Maxine Blasko of Cleveland, and Leola Bonham of Charleston; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Service was held February 5, 2000 at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Cross Lanes, with Pastor John Taylor officiating. Burial was in the memory gardens. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
Kathleen Eastwood
Kathleen Lucille Waterson Goss Eastwood, 90, of Scott Depot died February 3, 2000, at home after a short illness.
She was a former employee of A.W. Cox Fabric Shop, St. Albans, and Textile Mills, South Charleston. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, South Charleston, and a former senior regent of St. Albans Moose Lodge Women's Chapter.
Surviving: sons, Robert Howard Goss of Poca and Richard Lee Goss of Logan; daughter, Linda Marie Hustin of Scott Depot; stepdaughter, Linda C. Eastwood Kuhl of Kent, Washington; sister, Maxine Krause of Niles Ohio; four grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; one great-grandchild.
Memorial service was held February 7, 2000 at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, with the Rev. Wade Austin officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Walter H. Lewis Jr.
Walter H. Lewis Jr., 75, of Hurricane died February 4, 2000 in Heartland Nursing Home, South Point, Ohio.
He built the Mountaineer Dinner Theater, which he operated from 1971 to 1984, and later it was operated by Wayne Myers until 1989. Lewis' dream was to reopen the barn-like structure as a dinner theater until he suffered a stroke a few months ago.
He attended Eaglebrook and Phillips Academy, Andover, Masasachusetts, and was a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a member of B'nai Sholom Congregation, Huntington, a former member of the Huntington Rotary Club and a member of the boards of directors of Allied Realty and Bazaar Home Fashions. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving: son, Walter H. III of Huntington; daughter, Deborah Lewis of Chester, New Hampshire; sister, Dorothy L. Polan of Huntington; companion, Doris Leary; four grandchildren.
Service was held February 6, 2000 at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary, Huntington, with Rabbi David E. Wucher officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. The family suggests memorial donations to charity of choice.
Harry L. Lawrence
Harry L. Lawrence, 72, of Scott Depot died February 6, 2000, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a short illness.
He was retired as a project supervisor for the state Department of Highways. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary and the Moose Lodge. he was an Army Air Force veteran and a 40-year resident of the Kanawha Valley.
Surviving: daughters, Theresa Boston of Charleston, Yvonne Hunt of Nitro, and Cathey Ford of St. Albans; five grandchildren.
A private service will be held at a later date. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 4510 Pennsylvania Avenue, Charleston WV 25302. Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.
William L. Fulknier
William L. “Bill” Fulknier, 79, of Hurricane, formerly of Dunbar, died February 5, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was a member of the Retirees Club of Boilermakers Union Local 6667 and a Navy veteral of World War II.
Surviving: wife, Virginia; daughter, Jennie Withrow of Eleanor; stepdaughter, Jean Rice of St. Albans; stepson, Paul Rice of Florida; two grandchildren.
Service was held February 8, 2000 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Pastor Frankie Chapman officiating. Entombment was in Tyler Mountain Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Cross Lanes.
Laveeda P. Harshbarger
Laveeda P. Harshbarger, 77 of Culloden, wife of Roy Harshbarger, died Saturday, February 5, 2000 in Putnam General Hospital. She was a glass packer with Owens-Illinois. Also surviving are two sons, Darrell Lee Harshbarger of Westmoreland and John Alan Harshbarger of South Charlesto. Funeral Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Forest Memorial Park.
Vickie Lorraine Scites
Vickie Lorraine Scites, 46, of Huntington, entered Heaven February 5, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000 at Steele Memorial United Methodist Church, by Rev. Ed Grant and Rev. Ralph Sager. Burial in Lincoln Memorial Park, Hamlin. She was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She is survived by her husband, Gary Scites; two daughters, Allison and Alisha; father and step-mother, Vermond and Hazel Thompson of Hamlin; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Gary Wysong of West Hamlin; and many other loved ones, including Andy and Bradley. She preceded in death by her mother, Cora Catherine Madden Thompson. She was a twenty-two year employee of Marshall University, Vickie worked as a Program Assistant II the Alumni Development Office. She was a faithful member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church in Barboursville, and she was a beautiful lady with a spirit of sweetness that touched all those around her. She is loved and will be greatly missed. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. Nellie Mae Childers
Nellie Mae Childers, 86, of Barboursville, WV, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000 in St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Feb. 7 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Rev. James Jobe officiating. Burial in the Maupin Cemetery, Ona, WV. Nellie was born in Cabell Co. on Feb. 7, 1913. She was a daughter of the late Jesse Walker and Amanda Victoria Keenan Bowyer. Nellie was also preceded in death by three sisters, one brother and on April 29, 1994 by her husband, John L. Childers. Nellie was a former employee of Huntington Manufacturing. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl E “Duke” and Anna Jean Childers and Louis L. “Bud” and Shirley Childers, all of Barboursville; one foster daughter, Sue Humphrey of Sanford, FL; seven grandchildren and their spouses; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Elmer Leo “Bo” Lewis
Mr. Elmer Leo “Bo” Lewis, 82, of Milton, WV, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Feb. 6, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Rev. William E. Cassady officiating. Burial in the Blue Sulphur Cemetery, Ona, W.Va. Elmer was born at Milton on March 18, 1917. He was a son of the late George Franklin and Lola B. Nelson Lewis Sr. Elmer was also preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jean Lewis, a daughter, Phyllis Jean Huffstutler, three sisters and one brother. He was a retired farmer and construction worker with Laborers International Union of North America Local 543, Huntington. Elmer is survived by one son, Ronald F. Lewis of Milton; one daughter, Yvonne Poling of Fort Worth, Texas; one stepson, Dr. Robert P. Alexander of Hurricane; one sister, Hazel Girkin of Dillsboro, Ind.; ten grandchildren Susanna Batcer and Suzette Poling, both of Texas, David Poling, Stephen Poling and Donna Edwards, all of Florida, Ronda Lewis-Pararas of Richmond, Va., Angela Jean Lewis of Milton, Deanna Jointer of Conyers, Ga., Troy A. Flora Cremeans, 90, of Huntington, passed away Thursday, February 3, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Danny Krantz and Rev. Buddy Muncy. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born January 13, 1910 in Big Ugly, WV, a daughter of the late Kelly and Lula Adkins. She was a former employee of Sylvania, and was retired from Spurlocks Flowers and also was a member of the Rock of Ages Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Cremeans. She is survived by her daughter, Easter Burcham of Barboursville; three grandchildren, Patricia Cremeans, Connie Krantz, and Michael Burcham; eight great-grandchildren and twelve great-great-grandchildren.
Charles Lee Stowers
Charles Lee Stowers, 62, of Bidwell OH, formerly of Milton, passed away peacefully at his home following an extended illness on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000. Funeral services were conducted on Friday, Feb. 4 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Charles was born in Milton, WV, on Aug. 12, 1937, a son of the late Stollie B. Stowers and Ruth M. Lucas Stowers of Bidwell, OH. Charles graduated from Milton High School in 1955 while serving in the WV National Guard. Charles also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He left Pierceton Trucking Company, Gallipolis, OH, in 1997 where he was employed as a driver. The majority of his career was spent working for the federal government as an air traffic controller and postal worker. He also enjoyed maintaining his farm at his home in Bidwell. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Charles A. Stowers of Bidwell, OH; three daughters, Laura Warhurst of Leesburg, VA, Karen Fordham of Ft. Lee, NJ, and Sheri Stowers of Avon Lake, OH; sisters, Patricia and Dr. W.T. Washam of Vinton, OH, Carolyn and Bill Bradley of Gatesville, TX, Jane Lane and Vernon Craddock of Barboursville, WV; one brother, Eddie and Mary Stowers of Bidwell, OH; five grandchildren, Lindsey, Brandon, Brittany, and Cody Warhurst of Leesburg, VA, and Gatsby Bodnar of Avon Lake, OH; several nieces and nephews. Nephews Mike Stowers, Christopher Lane, Barry Peters and special friends David Walker Jr., Ken Phillips, and Chad Zumkehr served as pallbearers. Gernia Clay Adkins, 83, of Ona,went to be with the Lord Sunday, January 30, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, February 3, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Truman Adkins. Burial in Watson Cemetery. She was born November 5, 1916, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Claude and Tennessee Clay. She was Baptist by faith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ersel Adkins, and one grandchild. She is survived by eight children, Janice Woolwine and her husband Paul of Norfolk, Virginia, Dorothy Albright of Man, Eunice Adkins and her husband Delmer of Lorado, West Virginia, Lois Lester and her husband Millard of Wayne, Phyllis Hulsey and Charlie Adkins of Huntington, Forest Adkins and his wife Linda of Ona, Herman Adkins and his wife Roberta of Barboursville, Mary Adkins Sheets and her husband Mark of Norfolk, Virginia; twenty-six grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, four great- great-grandchildren and one special granddaughter, Stephanie Adkins Murray.
Madalyn “Maggie” Ramsey Gooch
Mrs. Madalyn “Maggie” Ramsey Gooch, 71, of Milton, WV, passed away Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at her home. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Feb. 3 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. John Hathaway officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born May 21, 1928, in Milton, WV, a daughter of the late Herchel and Daisy Davis Ramsey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Rommie Gooch on June 16, 1988, and her brother, Jimmy Ramsey. She was a homemaker and a member of Woodmen of the World. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Steve Arthur of Culloden; one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Kathy Gooch of Milton; and three grandchildren, Steven Bradley Arthur, Ashley Susan Arthur and Creath Brian Gooch.

Lola Mae Carter, 72, of Huntington, WV, went home to be with her Lord Sunday, February 13, 2000. She was born December 31,1927 in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Charles Albert and Hazel Ellen Estep Wallace. She was retired from Cabell Huntington Hospital and she attended Chesapeake Pentecostal Church. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Edna “Sissy” Keaton. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Eugene Carter, one daughter and son-in-law, Donna Mae and John Edward Nethercutt of Huntington; three sisters, Mary Alice Zornes of Dalevine, Alabama, Frances Nichols of Huntington, and Daisy “Poochie” Trent of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one brother, Merle Lee Wallace of Huntington, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Lovie Opal Holton
Lovie Opal Holton, 80, of Madison Creek Road, Salt Rock, WV, wife of John R. Holton went to Heaven on Monday, February 14, 2000. She was born on September 25,1919 in West Hamlin, the daughter of the late James Monroe and Laurney Bias Nida. She was also preceded in death by a son, Gilbert Monroe (Monty) Holton, three sisters and five brothers. Survivors, in addition to her husband of 61 years, are one daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Robert Miller of West Hamlin; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ray and Patsy Holton of Branchland, Ed Holton of Salt Rock, and Francis Willard and Anita Holton of Salt Rock; one sister, Edith Porter of Salt Rock; seven grandchildren, one step-grandchild, three great grandchildren and a host of friends. Services were conducted at Madison United Baptist Church at Salt Rock, which she attended, by the Rev. Walter Adkins and Rev. Ray Adkins on Wednesday, February 16, 2000.
