Vada L. Shank
Vada L. Shank, 88, of Eleanor died March 15, 2000, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County, a retired agent from Nationwide Insurance with over 20 years' service, and a former Red House Elementary School teacher. She was a member of Eleanor Senior Citizens, Eleanor Homemakers Club, Upper Vandalia Historical Society and Red House United Brethren Independent Church. She was a volunteer at Sunrise Nursing Home, Teays Valley.
Surviving: daughter, Judy Ellis of Jacksonville, Florida; sister, Phyllis Knell of St. Louis; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held March 18, 2000 at Red House United Brethren Independent Church with the Rev. Mike Hall officiating. Entombment was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Cross Lanes. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
Mildred V. Carpenter
Mildred V. Carpenter, 79, of Hurricane died March 17, 2000, in Hurricane after a long illness.
She was a homemaker, a lifelong resident of Hurricane and a member of Sycamore Baptist Church.
Surviving: daughters, Bernice Guthrie of Culloden and Claudia Carpenter of Hurricane; brother, Claro Painter of Hurricane; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Service was held March 20, 2000 at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, near Hurricane, Burial followed in the church cemetery. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
David Alan Wiseman
David Alan Wiseman of Milton, WV, departed this life Friday, Mar. 17, 2000 in St. Marys Hospital, Huntington following a brief illness. He had attained the age of 30 years, 6 months and 24 days. David was born in Huntington on Aug. 24, 1969. He was a former employee of Front Line Security, attended Milton High School and was preceded in death on Sept. 25, 1992 by a brother, Robert Scott Wisemen. He is survived by his parents, James Harold and Pat Hawkins Wiseman; one sister, Vanada Joan Wiseman; one brother, James Wiseman, Jr. and a niece Rachel Huffman all of Milton. Funeral services were held Monday, Mar. 20 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Rev. Fred Huffman officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.
Marcelle F. Booth Black
Marcelle F. Booth Black, 80, of Huntington, widow of Carl William Black, died Sunday, March 19, 2000 in St. Mary's Hospital. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Smith of Huntington and Mary Lou Damron of South Point, Ohio; and four sons, Eugene Black of Apoka, Fla., Gary Black and Rodney Black, both of Huntington, and Carl Black Jr. of Johnstown, Ohio. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 22, 2000 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton; burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.
Robert “Robby” Michael Mitchell
Robert “Robby” Michael Mitchell, 22, of Milton, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000 in Northeast Medical Center, Concord, N.C. He was a student at Marshall University. Survivors include his parents, Mike and Shelia Mitchell; and three sisters, Jayna Mitchell, at home, and Amber Mitchell and Jennifer Mitchell, both of Charleston, S.C. Hugh Hersman
Hugh Hersman, 89, of Milton, formerly of Millwood, husband of Evelyn June Kerby Hersman, died Sunday, March 19, 2000. He was retired from Columbia Gas. Also surviving are two daughters, Delores Donohoe of Milton and Peggy Crowder of Barboursville; and one sister, Ilo Ingram of Charleston. Funeral was held Tuesday, March 21, 2000 at Casto Funeral Home, Ravenswood; burial in Cottageville United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Linnia A. Lusher
Linnia A. Lusher, 96, of Barboursville, widow of Hubert H. Lusher, died Sunday, March 19, 2000 in St. Mary's Hospital. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two sons, Fred L. Lusher of Huntington and Frank W. Lusher of Barboursville; and one daughter, Dona Jewell Vaughan of Huntington. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 22, 2000 at Henson Mortuary; burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.
James Oliver Perry
James Oliver Perry, 38, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Thursday, March 16, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Dan Ross. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. He was born Oct. 9, 1961, in Huntington, a son of the late Rex and Minnie Ball Perry. He is survived by one sister, Cynthia Perry Khawani of Massachusetts; four brothers, Roy Perry and David Perry, both of Huntington, Kenny Rex Perry of Dover, Del., and Robert Perry of Florida; and one aunt and uncle, Beatrice and Jesse Ball of Kentucky.
Edward Wesley “Eddie” Rayburn
Edward Wesley “Eddie” Rayburn, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation. Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Fred Anderson Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. Eddie was born Oct. 28, 1918, in Lawrence County, Ohio, a son of the late Bailey and Belle Smith Rayburn. His parents moved to Barboursville in 1922 and Eddie has called it home ever since. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from April 1941 to October 1945, having been assigned duties in the Intelligence office in Panama. After being discharged, he worked for the railroad, in factories and was the projectionist at the theater in Barboursville for 27 Years. Eddie became involved with Barboursville youth sports in the late '30s and established the Little League Basketball Program in 1952. He formed the Tri-State Youth Football Program in 1949 and was one of the coaches of the first Little League Baseball Program. Eddie has always exemplified fairness, participation and the teaching of skills and activities to all of the Barboursville youths. It was these traits that led to the establishment of the Eddie Rayburn Achievement Award. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Smith, and two brothers, Everett Rayburn and Howard Rayburn. He has one sister, Mildred Lyons, who lives in Russell, KY.; several nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Diana Parker of Russell.
John R. Holton
John R. Holton, of Madison Creek Rd., Salt Rock, WV, husband of the late Lovie Nida Holton for 61 years, went to Heaven on March 15, 2000. He was born April 22, 1916, in Salt Rock, WV, the son of the late Gilbert and Amazon Beckett Holton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lovie, on February 14, 2000, a son, Gilbert Monroe (Monty) Holton, and four sisters and two brothers. Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Robert Miller of West Hamlin; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ray and Patsy Holton of Branchland, Ed Holton of Salt Rock, and Francis Willard and Anita Holton of Salt Rock, two sisters, Jane Cremeans of Sissonville, and Ruth Ross of Branchland, WV; three grandsons, four granddaughters; one step-granddaughter, three great-grandchildren. Services were conducted Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Madison United Baptist Church, where he attended, by the Rev. Walter Adkins and Rev. Tony Vance. Burial in the Nelson Holton Family Cemetery at Salt Rock. Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
James Garland Loftis
James Garland Loftis, 48, of Barboursville, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born January 26, 1952, in Charleston West Virginia, a son of the late Garland and Vada Loftis. He was retired from the US Army and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He also served in Grenade, Panama, Somalia. Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He is survived by his wife, Helen Louise Ballengee Loftis. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Shirley Ann Tudor Bledsoe
Shirley Ann Tudor Bledsoe, 54, of Milton, passed away Friday, March 10, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, March 12 at Heck Funeral Home, with the Reverends Russell Adkins and William Cassady officiating. Burial in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock. She was born Nov. 3, 1945, in Lincoln Co., WV, a daughter of the late Clyde and Naomi Kincaid Tudor. She is survived by her husband, Leon Bledsoe, to whom she was a loving and devoted wife; one sister, Judy Elaine Lovin of MI; one niece, Paula Leface of FL; two nephews, Teddy and Patrick Walls, both of MI; one aunt, Louise Adkins of GA; one cousin, Cindy Gilmore, of MI.
Daniel Ingram Rolfe
Daniel Ingram Rolfe, 77, of Barboursville, went home to be with the Father Saturday, March 11, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at Hebron Missionary Baptist Church by Pastor Carl Merritt. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born February 3, 1923 in Barboursville, a son of the late James Walter and Amy Peyton Rolfe. He was retired from the US Air Force and was a member and deacon at Hebron Missionary Baptist Church. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Frances May, Beulah Ledman, Elsie Morris and Stella Ashworth; and two brothers, Denver Rolfe and Gilbert Rolfe. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Adkins Rolfe; one son, Jamie Rolfe of Barboursville; and one sister, Virginia Scarberry of Ona. Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville was in charge of arrangements. Military graveside rites were conducted by VFW Post # 9738, Guyandotte.
George Allen Shell
George Allen Shell, 83, of Huntington, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2000 at his home. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at the Monaville Community Church, Monaville, WV by Pastor Ted Wilburn. Burial in Curry Cemetery. He was born June 20, 1916 in Martin County, Kentucky, son of the late David and Alta McCoy Shell. He was a retired coal miner. He is survived by his wife, Vesta Ooten Shell; two daughters, Marie Lowe and Sue Hooser, both of Huntington; four sons, Kelly Shell of Huntington, Luther Shell and his wife, Debbie, Russell Shell and his wife, Brenda, all of Logan, and Roger Shell of St. Petersburg, Florida: one granddaughter, Christina Shell; four grandsons, Larry Lowe, Michael Shell, Jonathan Shell and Brian Shell; two great-grandchildren, Gabrille Shell and Alex Shell; and three step-great-grandchildren. Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. Grandsons served as pallbearers.
James F. Lloyd
James F. “Buck” Lloyd, 85, of Poca died March 4, 2000 in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Poca, was retired from American Viscose with 33 years' service and was a former Putnam County schoolteacher with seven years service. He attended Rock Branch Independent Church.
Surviving: son, Donald Ray Lloyd of St. Louis; sister, Louise Campbell of Dunbar; brother, John Lloyd of Nitro; grandson, James Donald Lloyd.
Service was held March 8, 2000 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Ralph Workman officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
Malvrie King
Malvrie Jewell King, 66, of Red House died March 7, 2000, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and was a homemaker.
Surviving: daughters, Pam Spiegal of Jacksonville, Florida and Cindy Farmer of St. Albans; sons, Darrell of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, Rex of Red House, Richard of Winfield, and Ronald of Red House; sister, Margie Parsons of Red House; brother, Oshel Blevins of Red House; 10 grandchildren.

Charley Rice
Charley Rice, 81, of Lakin died March 7, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.
He was a Christian.
Surviving: sisters, Katie Lee Roach of Winfield and Lottie Brown of Westland, Michigan; brother, Clarence Rice of Winfield.

Gerald W. Legue
Gerald “Gary” W. Legue, 62, of Blacklick, Ohio died March 6, 2000, at his home.
He was a founding member of the East Side Grace Brethern Church at Blacklick.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer & Esta Summers Legue, and his grandparents, Guy and Ruby Summers, of Winfield.
He is survived by his wife Vera; sons, Rick and Tom; five grandchildren; brother Ron of Oxnard, California.

Geneva W. Fields
Geneva W. Fields, 80, of Poca died March 8, 2000, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a long illness.
She was a member of the Hometown Senior Citizens Center.
Surviving: sister, Gladys Crede of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Geneva Roush, Bill Walker and Greg Walker, all of Poca, John Walker of Orlando, Florida, and Paul Walker of North Pole, Alaska; seven great-grandchildren.

William E. Craigo
William Earl “Squack” Craigo, 88, of Red House died March 10, 2000, at home after a short illness.
He was retired from Union Carbide, Institute Plant, with 29 years' service. He was a former miner, a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the VFW and a 48-year resident of Red House.
Surviving: daughters, Patricia A. Mallett of Cross Lanes and Frances Louise Sheridan of Springfield, Virginia; son, William L. Craigo of Prattville, Alabama; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
