Donald G. Anastasio
Donald G. Anastasio, 44, of Scott Depot died February 26, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital, after a short illness.
He was a member of Winfield Community Church, a quality control manager with West Virginia Paving, Inc. and a 30-year resident of the Kanawha Valley.
Surviving: wife, Kathy Anastasio; son, Robert Anastasio at home; parents, Ralph and Jean Anastasio of Riverview, Florida; brother, Ronald of Sissonville; maternal grandmother, Julia Sharpe of Riverview; paternal grandmother, Beulah Contento of Riverview, Florida.
Service was held February 29, 2000 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Mike Rader and the Rev. Ed Grant officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.
Anna Belle Carney
Anna Belle Carney, 74, of Red House died February 26, 2000, at home after a long illness.
She was a 50-year resident of Red House and a former employee of the Hosiery Mill, Eleanor, and Fletcher Enamel, Dunbar. She was a member of Lone Oak Church of God Mission, Red House.
Surviving: husband, Earl Glenwood Carney; daughters, Shirley June Carney and Regina Gale Shawver, both of Red House; sons, Gerrell Eugene Tucker Sr. of Shelbyville, Indiana, Ronald Lee Carney and Robbie Joe Carney, both of Red House; sisters, Genevieve M. Landers of Bancroft and Violet G. Bailey of Rutland, Ohio; brothers, Lloyd Houston Tucker of Jacobsburg, Ohio and Elden Arthur of Bancroft; seven grandchildren.
Service was held February 29, 2000 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Nyle Fisher officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.
Mary Snell
Mary Francis Snell, 64, of Poca died February 26, 2000, in Valley Health Village, South Charleston, after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Poca.
Surviving: aunt, Mrs. Roy Francis of South Charleston; cousins, Gloria Shirkey of South Charleston and Dorothy McClure of Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Service was held February 29, 2000 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Larry Walker officiating. Burial was in Thacker Cemetery, Cross Lanes.
Ford James (Jim) Chidester
Ford James (Jim) Chidester, 63, beloved husband of Sharon Chidester, of Salt Rock, went to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, February 25, 2000. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He loved life, people, and the railroad where he was an engineer for over 40 years. He was most recently employed at CSX. He was the son of Fred Chidester, of Russell, KY and Isabella Hazen of Port Huron, MI. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Don and Georgina Chidester of North Street, MI; his former wife, Sue Chidester, two sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Christine of Colebrook, CT and Brian and Sandy of Allen Park, MI; three daughters and sons-in-law, Shari Walach of West Palm Beach, FL, Lori and Doug Richards of Avon Lake, OH and Juli and Richard Schwamm of Windermere, FL; and three step-daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Dennis Stanford of Clarksville, TN, Kecia Nelson of West Hamlin, WV and Amber and Blaine Harris of Italy. He was grandfather to 17 grandchildren, Joel, Seth and Noel Chidester, Ryan, Matthew, Amanda, Trevor and Brandon Chidester, Kaitlyn, Jordan and Jacob Richards, Lance Dial, Donovan and Jarred Stanford, Andrea and Cameron Nelson and Logan Harris. Funeral services were conducted at Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin Chapel on Tuesday February 29, 2000. Burial in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock, WV with Pastor Tom Racer officiating. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association or Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
Charles C. Christian Jr.
Mr. Charles C. Christian, 74, of Culloden, formerly of Huntington, widower of Virginia Ann Christian, passed away Friday, February 25, 2000 at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 28, 2000 at Chapman's Mortuary, with Pastor Judith Erwin officiating. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, WV. He was born October 20, 1925 in Huntington, a son of the late Charles A. Christian, Sr. and Minerva Davis Christian. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Stella and Virginia. He was a member of Highlawn Full Gospel Assembly. He was a contractor and a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Christian Younger and David Younger of Tipp City, OH; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles A. and Sandra Kay Christian of Culloden; a granddaughter, Jennifer D. Ferris of Barboursville: two great-grandchildren, Cameron M. Ferris and Caitlin M. Ferris; a sister, Marie Gillispie of Huntington; and two brothers, James M. Christian and Robert R. Christian, both of Huntington.
George Cullum
George Cullum, 68, of Huntington, WV, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather died at home after a long illness in the company of his family Friday, February 25, 2000 and is now walking hand in hand with the Lord. Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 28 at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Cledith Campbell. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. George Richard was born December 15, 1931 in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of the late George and Beatrice Merle (Sibrel) Cullum.
He was a member of local 1652 and a retired steelworker from American Car & Foundry (ACF, Inc.) He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict and having served with the 25th Infantry Division was awarded the Silver Star for “heroism” in action. Additional awards include the Purple Heart, Japan Occupation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and the Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Camp Stars. He was preceded in death by his brother, James B. Cullum; daughter-in-law, Kellee Jane Cullum; and great-granddaughter, Adrian Nicole Black. He is survived by his wife, Welba June (Ward) Cullum; one daughter and son-in-law; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Georgeanna Lee and Elmer Black of Huntington, George Jr., “Rich” and Milana Cullum of Barboursville, William “Danny” and Shelia Cullum of Huntington and Gary Cullum of Wayne; two sisters, Beatrice Joy Hinkle of Killeen, TX., Phyllis Jean Haye of Rutland, OH; grandchildren Inieze Marie Black, Patrick Wayne Black, Christopher George Cullum, Shannon Scott Cullum, Shawnette Renee Blatt, Kevin Daniel Cullum, Stephanie Ann and Gary Marshall Cullum; seven great-grandchildren, Shane Michael, Adrienne Nicole, Emma Dyanne, Kirkland George, Casey Daniel, Makayla Lynn and Emily Ellen; special friends, Cecil Sullivan, Darrell Harvey and David Bocook. Military honors were provided by members of the 38th Ordnance Group (Ammo), Charleston, WV. Herman H. “Monk” Humphreys
Herman H. “Monk” Humphreys, 69, of Hurricane, widower of Kines Faye Edwards Humphreys, died Saturday, February 26, 2000 at home. He was a retired crane operator for H. K. Porter Steel. Survivors include two daughters, Diana Humphreys Edwards and Regina Humphreys Bird, both of Hurricane; one sister, Norma Jean Ashworth, and one brother, Bud Bagsby of Texas. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 1, 2000 at Calvary Apostolic Church, Hurricane; burial in Valley View Memorial Park Hurricane. Heck Funeral Home, Milton was in charge of arrangements.
Lettie Lucinda Browning Watkeys
Lettie Lucinda Browning Watkeys, 88, of Huntington, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2000 at her home. Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 28, 2000 at Barboursville Baptist Church by the Rev. Craig Coster and Rev. Harry Rowe. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. She was born April 1, 1911 in Logan County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Van Buren and Amanda Toler Browning. She was in the first graduating class of Barboursville High School in 1928 and she attended Morris Harvey College in Barboursville. She graduated from Marshall College with a BA and MA degree. She was a retired school teacher with forty-two and a half years of service. She was a member of Barboursville Baptist Church since 1926 where she sang in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher and was chairman of children's work. She was also a member of the National Education Association, West Virginia Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Barboursville Woman's Club and was past president of Cabell County Education Association and Association of Classroom Teachers.
She was preceded in death on May 10, 1999 by her husband of sixty-six years, Charles G. Watkeys. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Donald Baylous of Barboursville, Judith and Roger Fortner of Huntersville, North Carolina; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles G. and Tammy Watkeys of Huntington; eight grandchildren, Cinda Joy and Homer Ransdell of Frederick, Maryland, James Donald and Denise Baylous of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, Michael Scott and Mary Fortner of Wilmington, North Carolina, Shay and Robert Heckard of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Charles (Chip) and Teena Watkeys, III of Winterville, North Carolina, James David Watkeys, Megan Michelle Cooper and Charles Matthew Cooper, all of Huntington; seven great-grandchildren, Hunter Rene Baylous, Peyton Leigh Baylous, Grace Elizabeth Heckard, Emily Anne Heckard, Charles Alexander Watkeys, Joshua Andrew Watkeys and Anne Nichole Watkeys; and one brother, William E. Browning of Houston, Texas. Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Contributions may be made to Barboursville Baptist Church.

Virgil Franklin Bowen, 62, of Huntington, died Thursday, February 24, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Feb. 26, at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born January 2, 1938 in Huntington, a son of the late Denny and Virgie Black Bowen. He is survived by his former wife and best friend, Delores Bowen; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Donnie Kelly of Huntington; one son and daughter-in-law, Virgil Douglas and Vickie Bowen of Atlanta, Georgia; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, George and Tammy Green, Michael and Cheryl Shelton; three sisters including a special sister, Doris Bowen of Huntington, Betty Asbury and Erma Hazelett, both of Barboursville; three brothers, Bernard Lee Bowen of Georgia, Glenn Bowen of Circleville, Ohio, and Kenneth Bowen of Barboursville; six grandchildren, Kristye Kesler, Christopher Green, Amber Shelton, Stephanie Kesler, Logan Ball, Zack Miller and one soon to be born, Kayla Victoria Bowen; two special nephews, Carlos Bowen of Chillicothe, Ohio and Danny Smoot of Georgia. David H. “Diet” Smith
David H. “Diet” Smith, 59, of Worthington, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 22, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Friday, February 25, 2000 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Marvin Boggs. Burial in Fairview Memory Gardens, Hamlin, West Virginia. He was born December 13,1940 in Lincoln County, a son of Doris Frye Smith and the late Holly Smith. He was an engineer with CSX and a veteran of the US Army. He attended Wurtland Baptist Church and was a member of Hamlin Lodge #79 A.F. & A.M., whose members conducted Masonic graveside rites, and was a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Logan, WV. He is survived by his wife, Wilmarine Parsons Smith; his mother, Doris Smith of West Hamlin, WV; one daughter, Carol Ann Smith of Florence, Kentucky; three sons, Michael Smith, Darren Smith and Charles Smith, all of Huntington, WV; two stepdaughters, Sabrina Meadows of Charleston, WV, and Karen Fellows of Chesapeake, VA, and ten grandchildren. John Travis Yates
John Travis Yates, 24, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord Monday, Feb. 21, 2000 in St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, following a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Feb. 25 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Rev. Mark Finley officiating. Burial in the Milton Cemetery. Travis was born in Huntington on Feb. 11, 1976. He was the son of Carolyn Moore Bird and Kenneth A. Yates, both of Milton. Travis attended Fraziers Bottom Church of God, Fraziers Bottom, WV and was a 1996 graduate of Huntington East High School. He was an employee of The Olive Garden, Barboursville. Survivors in addition to his parents are; his stepfather, John E. Bird; his stepmother, Brenda Yates; his maternal grandparents, Minor and Darlene Moore; and his paternal grandparents, Paul and Sybilla Yates, all of Milton his step paternal grandparents, John and Sandy Bird of Culloden; two stepbrothers, Eric Sherman of NC and Ben Sherman of Ashland, KY and a special niece, Allyson Sherman.
