Sherry Lynn Perry, 48, of Hurricane, formerly of St. Albans, died May 2, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a certified nursing assistant with Kanawha Home Health Services, Dunbar. She was a member of Nitro Moose Lodge No. 565 and a three-year resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: daughter, Melissa Bays of Hurricane; grandmother, Sylvia Ferguson of St. Albans; sisters, Marsha Holmes of Dunbar and Nancy Jenkins of Nitro; brother, David Hess of Hurricane; four grandchildren.
Service was held May 5, 2000 at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Archie R. Snedegar officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Catherine Kanniainen
Catherine Kanniainen, 81, of Teays died May 2, 2000, in Teays Center Care Home after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, St. Albans. She was a 50-year resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: sons, David of Teays and Paul of Utica, New York; sisters, Mamie Fassler of Cove, Arkansas and Violet Waddell of Cincinnati, Ohio; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Woodrow McCallister
Woodrow M. McCallister, 81, of Scott Depot died May 4, 2000, after a long illness.
He was a retired carpenter from FMC Corp., South Charleston, with 37 years’ service. He was a Christian and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: daughter, Catherine Jenkins of South Charleston; sons, Charles of Florida, Ed and Mike, both of Scott Depot; stepson, Robert “Bob” Wick of Olympia, Florida; sisters, Marie Terry of Winfield and Pansy Wheless of Nashville, Georgia; brothers, Fred D. of Southside and Myron R. of Scott Depot; seven grandchildren; three great-granchildren.
Service was held May 6, 2000 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Keith Hudson and the Rev. Fred McCallister officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery.
Ruth M. Benson
Ruth M. Benson, 85, of Chesapeake City, Maryland, formerly of Eleanor, died May 4, 2000, at the home of her cousin, Dick Mckinney of North East, Maryland.
She was a former clerk for DuPont and a member of Ladies Auxiliary of the Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Co. She attended Presbyterian Church of Chesapeake City.
Also surviving: son, Edward S. “Buzz” Benson of Poca; brothers, Charles W. David of Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, John W. Davis of Millsboro, Delaware, and Dr. Harry B. Davis of York, Pennsylvania; sisters, Bea Lock of Boothwyn and Anna E. King of Laurel; one grandchild.
Service was held May 8, 2000 at R.T. Foard Funeral Home, Chesapeake City, with the Rev. James R. Moyers officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, Chesapeake City.
Charles L. Crimmel
Charles L. Crimmel, 87, of Hurricane, formerly of South Charleston, died May 5, 2000, at home after a short illness.
He was retired from Union Carbide and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston.
Surviving: son, Charles P. Crimmel of Scott Depot; brother, Howard Crimmel of St. Albans; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

James E. Kessler
James E. “Jim” Kessler, 72, of Hurricane, formerly of Chesapeake, died May 7, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
He was a retired superintendent from Carbon Fuel Co., a member of Hines Baptist Church and VFW, Chesapeake. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Surviving: wife, Helen Kessler; daughters, Linda Painter of Dayton, Ohio, Brenda Stanley of Helena, Alabama, and Kathy Arnold of Hurricane; brothers, the Rev. Maynard L. of Hilton Village, Everett C. of Colorado Springs, Colorado, George W. of Claxton, Georgia, and Thomas G. of Beckley; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Service was held May 9, 2000 at Wallace Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, Clontonville, with the Rev. Don Toler officiating. Burial was in the memorial cemetery. Irene Kisner Mills, 96, of Huricane, formerly of Washington, died May 6, 2000, in Sweetbriar Retirement Home, Dunbar, after a short illness.
She was a retired secretary from the U.S. State Department with 30 years’ service, an Army veteran and a member of the American Legion and Eastern Star.
Surviving: sister, Freda Swihart; brother, Arligh Kisner; niece, Harriet Flanagan; several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Graveside service was held at Fletcher Cemetery, Morgantown. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Dumas, 65, of Winfield died May 5, 2000, in SunBridge Care Center after a long illness.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving: daughter, Lilia Jean Henish; mother, Murtie Coleman of Winfield; sister, Sidney Burgess of Winfield; brother, Franklin Eugene Coleman of Indiana; half brothers, Robert Michael Coleman of Teays Valley and John Allen Coleman of Beckley; four grandchildren.

Frances Kathleen Gibson, 75, of Ona, WV, died Thursday, May 4, 2000. Funeral services were conducted at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel on Monday, May 08, 2000 by Rev. Jeffrey A. Johnson. Burial were in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born May 15, 1924 in Smithville, WV, a daughter of the late Clyde and Cora Hawkins Furr. She is survived by her husband, John H. Gibson; four daughters, Sandra Lovejoy of Point Pleasant, Becky Spenia of Las Vegas, NV, Sue Dotson of Huntington, Patricia Garren of Hurricane; one son, John W. Solomon Mullins
Solomon Mullins, 92, of Huntington, WV, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2000 at Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 8, 2000 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Craig Coster. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born February 25, 1908 in Wise, VA, a son of the late Willie Albert and Maryland Hall Mullins. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corp, having served during WWII. He was a deacon in the Naomi Primitive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Celia Jane Mullins. He is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Larry and Kay Mullins and Donald Mullins, all of Huntington; one brother, Monteville Mullins of Gallipolis, OH; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. E. Roy Cremeans, 84, of Barboursville, husband of Linnie Edmonds Cremeans, died Saturday, May 6, 2000 in St Mary’s Hospital. He was a welding foreman retired from AC&F Industries. Also surviving are two sons, Ronald Cremeans of Burlington, N.C., and Roger Cremeans of Ironton; one daughter, Joy Black of Barboursville; and two sisters, Daisy White of Sacramento, Calif., and Marie Foster of Huntington. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge; burial in Maupin Cemetery, Ona.
Standard Lee Adkins
Standard Lee Adkins, 57, of East Lynn, W.Va., passed away Saturday, May 6, 2000, in Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Wallace Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Minister Emual Adkins and Minister Delmer Adkins. Burial in Cedar Cliff Cemetery. He was born Sept. 5, 1942, in East Lynn, WV, a son of the late Standard and Nora Baker Adkins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War. He is survived by the mother of his children, Sharon Adkins; two daughters, Kimberly Adkins of East Lynn and Tammy Adkins of Wayne, W.Va.; two sons, Eric Adkins of East Lynn, W.Va., and Jesse Thomas Stevens of Huntington; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Bartram of Huntington and Cynthia Gilkerson of Branchland; three brothers, Calvin Adkins of East Lynn, W.Va., Sam Adkins of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Johnny Adkins of Ft. Lauderdale; two grandchildren, Kari and Shelton Adkins; a special friend, Kenneth Morris. Catherine W. Hall
Catherine W. Hall, 79, of Milton and Getaway, Ohio, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 5, 2000, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 7 at Milton Funeral Home by Pastor Curtis Hall. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. She worked 42 years as a crew leader at Owens Illinois Glass Co. She was born May 21, 1920, in Huntington W.Va., daughter of the late Tom Wallace and Ocal Chapman. Her husband, Joe Hall, and one brother, Chester Wallace, preceded her in death. Survivors include her children, Dale Allen and wife Michelle Hall of South Point, Ohio, and Tommy Joe and wife Debbie Hall of Chesapeake, Ohio; three stepchildren, Frances and husband James Floyd of Covington, Ky, Curtis Ray and wife Mary Lou Hall of Tennessee and Brenda Northop of Detroit, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Hugh Wallace of Milton, WV, and Jim Wallace of North Carolina; and one special aunt, Mae Chapman of Milton, W.Va., with whom she made her home.
Dallan Fields
Cabell County Sheriff Dallan Fields, 47, of Huntington, husband of Paula J. Gibson Fields, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2000, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Huntington Civic Arena, with Pastor Edwin S. Harper officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born February 25, 1953, at Welch, W.Va., a son of Rush F. and Christina Browning Fields of Gilbert, W.Va. He was a graduate of Marshall University with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science, and a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice. He was a member of the law enforcement community since 1974. He was responsible for starting the Sheriff’s Department Narcotic Unit in 1981. He established the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit, K9 Unit, Dive team and Water Enforcement Division. He was the former Chief Criminal Investigator for the Cabell County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. He was a member of FOP Lodge #122, member and President of the West Virginia Sheriff’s Association. He received numerous awards and honors including Outstanding Achievement Award for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention, The West Virginia Outstanding Citizen Award, 1999, presented by Governor Cecil Underwood, and the West Virginia National Guard Special Medal for Flood Recovery during the Milton, W.Va., flood. Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a daughter, Dalline Fields at home; two sons, Paul and Ryan Fields, both at home; a sister and brother-in-law, Reva and Byron Smith of Gilbert, W.Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Rolland D. and Jean Fields of Grand Rapids, Mich.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Paul and Reba Gibson of Huntington;
sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Reba and Gary Lloyd of Huntington, Teresa and David Shockley of South Point, Ohio, Vonda and David Black of Barkers Ridge, Diana Gibson and fiance Rick Hodge of Huntington, Kim Newsome and fiance Roy Mays of Huntington; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jason and Penny Gibson of Salt Rock; nephews, Kyle Smith, Chad and Erik Fields, Dylan Black, Jonathan Newsome, Matthew and Cody Gibson; nieces, Lisa Longfellow, Jessica and Nichole Shockley, Fallon Black and Christy Newsome. Eathel Wyant Cremeans
Eathel Wyant Cremeans, 82, of Culloden, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, May 3, 2000 at her residence. Funeral services were held Friday, May 5th at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Brothers James Estes and Ronald Naylor officiating. Burial in Culloden Cemetery. She was born on May 21, 1917 in Cabell Co., WV, a daughter of the late Bishop Osborne and Lula V. (Sovine) Wyant. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Earl Cremeans on Jan. 23, 1982. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of God in Hurricane. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law Donald and Ruth Cremeans of Culloden; one daughter, Aldina Fisher of Culloden; five grandchildren, Barbara Ferguson, Bob Fisher, Dianna Smith, Donald R. Cremeans, and David Cremeans; six great grandchildren, Travis Ferguson, Joshua Fisher, Dustin Cremeans, Rachael Smith, Alexandria Cremeans, and Courtney Cremeans. Benjamin Frederick “Fred” Ball
Mr. Benjamin Frederick “Fred” Ball, beloved son of the late Estella Heck and Benjamin Franklin Ball, passed away Monday, April 24, 2000, at his home in Milton, WV. Fred celebrated his 86th birthday last week. He was born April 14, 1914, in Jonestown, Mississippi. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, April 27, 2000, at the Milton United Methodist Church Milton, with Rev. Keith Leap officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Fred is survived by his wife, Adelia C. “Dee” Ball; his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Ball and James McDowell of St. Augustine, FL; his three granddaughters, Lauren Sonis of St. Augustine, Cynthia Estelle Levine of Huntington, and Leslie and Gary Starzmann of Atlanta, GA. Fred was awaiting the fall birth of his first great-grandchild, “Baby” Starzmann. He is survived by a close cousin Mary Davis of Virginia Beach, VA; Lee Ball and family of Milton; brother-in-law Lawrence Childers and family. Fred Ball was well known as a teacher in this area. He taught art at Milton High School, Marshall University, and Concord College. He loved teaching and his students loved him. He showed great devotion to his classes and was an extraordinary motivating teacher. He used to say “I never met a student I didn’t like.” He was a colorful figure in our community. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Marshall College, and had completed partial work on a Ph.D. from Ohio State University. Over the years, he won many honors and awards for his art. He was a member of the Milton United Methodist Church; Lebanon Lodge 68 AF & AM Monday; V.F.W. Post 9796, Milton; American Legion and throughout the years he was a member of numerous arts and cultural organizations.
He received his Naval indoctrination at Harvard College in 1942, and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, posted as a special courier in Algiers, North Africa, during WWII. During the 1950’s Mr. Ball wanted to spotlight West Virginia’s number two industry, hand blown glass and artists who worked in that medium. He opened the Craft House, Gallery of Glass, in Milton in order to fill the void at that time and to promote these numerous glass artisans throughout the state. Art was his passion and no artist to date has ever created as many paintings and other forms of art of the Historical Milton Covered Bridge as did Fred Ball. Some of his paintings were on exhibit at the Heck Funeral Home during calling hours and during the funeral services at the church. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements. B. Vivian Bailey, 70, of Culloden, wife of Charles E Bailey, died Sunday, April 23, 2000 in Putnam General Hospital. She was a homemaker. Also surviving are two daughters, Vivian Thompson of Sevierville, Tenn., and Debbie Dodd of Linden, Va.; two sons, Dan Bailey of Louisville, Ohio, and Gregory Bailey of Sanford, N.C.; two sisters, Alcie Sowards of Culloden and Violet Wooten of Hurricane; and one brother, Millard O. Burns of Culloden. Funeral services were held Friday, April 28, 2000 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.
Donald Leo LeGrand
Donald Leo Le Grand, 74, of Hurricane, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2000, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 28, 2000, at Henson Mortuary by the Revs. Claude Spurlock and Frank Legge, Jr. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Cabell County, son of the late Hersten and Ollie White LeGrand. He was a retired steel worker at Houdaille Industries, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in WWII. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Julia Saunders LeGrand; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Roger and Karen LeGrand of Lesage, and Ronald LeGrand and his fiance Sharon Isleib of Catlettsburg, Ky.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Alfred Morris of Fayetteville, N.C., and Anna and Jack Buzzard of Hurricane; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He will be missed by a host of family and friends. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements.

Mae Midkiff, 77, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away April 25, 2000, in Canal Winchester, Ohio. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 28, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Carlos Gibson. Burial in Green Valley Cemetery, Rt. 1, Branchland. She was born May 3, 1922, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Wesley and Maude Gue Cremeans. She was a member of the Salem United Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ercel; one brother, Harley Cremeans; two sisters, Marie Pitts and Glennith Bennett. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Bill Napier of Carroll, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Glendell and Gayle Midkiff of Lancaster, Ohio; two sisters Faye Baker and Martha Bartram, both of Huntington; grandchildren, Mike Midkiff of Carroll Ohio, Debbie Hegedus of Bend, Ore., and Rodney Napier of Pickerington, Ohio; and five great-grandchildren.

Ronald M. “Mac” Bowles, 66, of Culloden, formerly of Portsmouth, Ohio, died Thursday, April 27, 2000 in Columbia Putnam General Hospital. He was former owner and operator of Pat’s Cafe’, Portsmouth, and a former Bank One, Ohio, employee. Survivors include his mother, Ina Garrett Bowles of Culloden, two daughters, Tonya Howard of Charleston, S.C., and Keli Sargent of Summersville, S.C.; and two brothers, Russell Bowles of Hurricane and Ricky Bowles of Dell Ind. Gales Lee Edmonds, 61, of Apple Grove died Saturday, April 29, 2000 at home. He was a farmer. Survivors include three brothers, Robert “JR” Edmonds, Steve Edmonds and Jimmie Edmonds, all of Apple Grove; one sister, Dorthy Shaffer of Huntington and three step-sisters, Anita Kayser of Virginia, Teresa Vieeland and Beckey Saxton, both of Gallipolis Ohio.
