Patricia Ann Edwards
Patricia Ann Frye Edwards, 68, of Winfield died October 3, 2000, at home after a short illness.
She was a retired printer from the Kanawha County Board of Education and a lifelong resident of the Kanawha Valley.
Surviving: husband, Robert B. Edwards Sr.; daughters, Sissy Smoot of Alum Creek, Kay Mobley and Terri Mobley, both of Winfield; sons, Mike Frye of Leon, Rocky Frye of South Charleston, Harold Edwards and Bobby Edwards, both of Winfield; sister, Barbara King of Charleston; brother, Paul Oxley of Charleston; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

W.W. Wick
W.W. “Duke” Wick, 88, of Winfield died October 4, 2000, in Superior Residence of Pheasant Ridge, Roanoke, Virginia, after a short illness.
He was owner/operator of Wick General Merchandise and W.W. Wick Furniture & Appliances. He was a former elder at Winfield Presbyterian Church and a member of Sleepy Hollow Golf Course and Masonic Lodge 36. He was a former director of Teays Valley National Bank, co-founder of Winfield Lions Club and a Navy verteran of World War II.
Surviving: wife, Frances Bachtel Wick; daughter, Frances K. “Katie” Wick of Roanoke; son, Warren Wellington II of Atlanta; one granddaughter.
Service was held Saturday, October 7, 2000, at Winfield Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Max V. Perrow officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery. James Clark
James “J.C.” Clark, 85, of Red House died October 4, 2000 at home.
He was retired from FMC Corp. with 40 years’ service and was an Army veteran.

Bernice B. Dunlap, 81, of Dunbar died Monday, September 25, 2000 at home. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Smith and Brenda Dunlap, both of St. Albans; two sons, Bill Dunlap and David Dunlap, both of South Charleston; two sisters, Theodosia Burns of Milton and Jackie Fitzpatrick of Florida; and four brothers, Elwood Browning, Lee Browning, Charles Browning and Jimmy Browning, all of Florida. Hulbert Glenwood Edwards
Hulbert Glenwood Edwards, 81, of Culloden, formerly of St. Albans, husband of Christine Blankenship Edwards, died Friday in St. Mary’s Hospital. He was a retired ironworker. Also surviving are two daughters, Sharon Edwards of Roanoke, Va., and Tammy Edwards of Winfield, and three brothers, Estell Edwards of Fort Myers, Fla, and Nelson Edwards and Vernon Edwards, both of St. Albans. Funeral Sunday at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane; burial in Edwards Cemetery, St. Albans.
Carolyn Sue Adkins
Carolyn Sue Adkins, 57 ,of Culloden, wife of Amos Adkins, died Sunday at home. Also surviving are one daughter, Tracy Pennington of Culloden; two sons, Terry Pennington of Ponder, Texas, and Tharon Pennington of Springtown, Texas; three stepsons, Mike Adkins of Culloden, Lester Adkins of Hurricane and Gary Adkins of Lesage; two stepdaughters, Teresa Adkins of East Lynn and Lucy Kramer of Fisher, Ind.; one brother, David Ramey of Milton, one sister, Norma Ashworth of Culloden and one half sister, Barbara Hedrick. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 4th, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane; burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Donations may be made to Hospice of Huntington.
Mr. Oscar Clyde Cartwright Jr
Mr. Oscar Clyde Cartwright Jr., 72, of Barboursville, went to be with the Lord Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 at the Veterans Affairs .Regional Medical Center, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Chapman’s Mortuary, with his nephews, Danny Hammond and David Cartwright officiating. Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery. He was born Sept. 29, 1928 in Huntington a son of the late Oscar and Mildred E. Michael Cartwright. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, where he took part in the fighting at the Chosin Reservoir, with the First Marine Regiment of the First Marine Division.
He also served with, the Marine Corps Reserves. He was a member of the former 9th Avenue United Methodist Church, VFW Post 1064, Marine Corps League, Detachment 340, “The Chosin Few” and the “First of the First.” He was a retired foreman with CSX. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a. son, Timothy Dale Cartwright, a brother, Leland Cartwright and two :sisters, Melva Jean Cartwright and Lucille Hammond. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Karen N. and Johnny Nance of Barboursville; grandchildren Cherrie D Nance Lovejoy and her husband Sam Lovejoy, of Huntington, and Jonathan L. Nance of Barboursville; two great grandchildren Cleia A. and Corbin M. Lovejoy of Huntington; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Alice May and Victor and Marie Cartwright of Huntington, Carlos James and Lula Cartwright of Jonesboro, Tenn; and a sister and brother-in-law, Wilhelmina and Clayton Ashworth of Dewey, Ariz. Sharing in conducting military graveside rites were The Marine Corps League, Detachment 340, VFW Post 1064 and members from The United States Marine Corps. Chapman’s Mortuary, was in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Uel C. Lovejoy
Dr. Uel C. Lovejoy, 90, of 201 Carper Lane, Guyan Estates, Barboursville, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 at Teays Valley Nursing Home. Burial took place at Montgomery Memorial Park, Montgomery, W.Va., on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000; a brief memorial service was conducted Tuesday, Oct 3, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital Chapel of the Risen Christ in Huntington. He was born Nov. 20,1909, in Laing, W.Va., an only son of the late Dana and Fannie Mae Lovejoy. He was preceded in death on Feb. 5, 1991 by Sue Cannon Lovejoy, his wife of 52 years. Dr. Lovejoy graduated from Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Va, in 1937. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII he practiced obstetrics/gynecology in Charleston until 1966. Since that time he resided in Barboursville and worked at St Mary’s Hospital, Marshall University and Highland Blood Center until his retirement in 1983. He is survived by two sons, Michael C. Lovejoy of Guyan Estates, Barboursville, and William D. Lovejoy of Houston, Texas; and three grandsons, William Christopher and Patrick Dylan Lovejoy of New York City, and Kevin Douglas Lovejoy of Austin, Texas. Rev. Russell Bledsoe
Rev. Russell Bledsoe,. 79, of Barboursville, went home to be with the Lord Sept. 30, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Fred Anderson. Burial in Franklin Cemetery. He was born Jan. 13, 1921 in Cabell County, a son of the late John and Gertrude Butcher Bledsoe. He was a retired employee of CSX Transportation with .37 years of service. He was also a member of the Hash Ridge Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during WWII. He was preceded in death by one sister, Opal Lewis. He is survived by his wife Margie Clay Bledsoe; one daughter, Tammy Bledsoe of West Hamlin; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Terry Bledsoe of South Point, Ohio, and Joe and Kathy Bledsoe of Charlotte, N.C.; two stepsons and their wives, George and Pam Goddard of Kitts Hill, Ohio and Tim and Ivadene Goddard of Branchland; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Kathleen Gwinn and Evon and Luther Lewis, all of Barboursville. and Madaline and Raymond Clark of Ona; one brother and sister-in-law, Silas Elmo and Patsy Bledsoe of Barboursville; brother-in-law, Henry Lewis of Lavalette; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Casper Sherry Childers
Casper Sherry Childers, 92, of Salt Rock passed away Friday, September 29, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, October 1, 2000, at the Bethlehem Association Tabernacle in Salt Rock by the Rev. Ray Adkins and the Rev. Walter Adkins. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. He was born Feb 24,1908, in Salt Rock, a son of the late Edwin Bud and Mary Pratt Childers. He was a retired employee of H.K Porter. He was a member of Madison United Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 49 years, a trustee of Bethlehem United Baptist Association for 47 years, and a member of Baylous Cemetery Business Committee for 61 years. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Birdie Cremeans Childers in 1993, two sisters Gwenith Morrison and Verda Hatfield; and two brothers, Carvel Childers and William “Shem” Childers.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Clark E. and Nora Hightower Childers and Dexter and Betty Joyce Johnson Childers, and one daughter and son-in-law, Gwenith Joyce and Charles Hightower, all of Salt Rock, six grandsons and wives, Dexter “Deckie” and Kim Gue Childers of Salt Rock, Tim and Samantha Hightower of North Carolina, Dwayne and Valerie Gibbs Hightower of Salt Rock, Ed and Kim Adkins Childers of North Carolina, Chris and Pam Stinnette Childers of Scott Depot and James and Shelly Johnson Hightower of Barboursville; three granddaughters and husbands, Teresa and Ron Gibson, Carla and Jack Ferrell and Sarah Hightower, all of Salt Rock; nine great-grandsons, Brandon Gibson, Paul and Ryan Hightower, Joshua, Jonathan, Caleb, Corey and Logan Childers and Tristen Daniels; 11 great-granddaughters, Amanda, Julia and Alexis Hightower, Kristi and Jennifer Gibson, Erica and Kelli Ferrell, Tiffany Childers, Chastity and Sierra Daniels and Beth Collins; one great-great-grandson, Tyler Hightower; and two brothers, Philby Childers and Wilton Childers, both of Salt Rock. Velma P. “Sissie” Creasy, 83, of Hometown died September 24, 2000, in SunBridge Nursing Center, Hurricane, after a long illness.
She was a former caregiver.

Fred Holston
Fred Holston, 87, of Poca died September 23, 2000, at the home of his grandson, Mike Dolan, after a long illness.
He was a former employee of Monsanto Chemical Co. He was a native of Putney, Kanawha County, a member of Lett Creek Community Church and a retired member of the Pipefitters Union.
Also surviving: daughters, Jeanne Meeks of Osarck, Missouri, Janie Casdorph of St. Albans and June Holston of Biloxi, Mississippi; sons, Robert Wilson of Orange Lake, Florida, Richard Wilson and Raymond Holston, both of Ocala, Florida; 25 additional grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren.

Pauline A. Mattox
Pauline A. Hudson Mattox, 74, of Eleanor, formerly of Nitro, died September 23, 2000, after a long illness.
She was a homemaker, a native of Putnam County and a graduate of Poca High School, where she was a Golden Horseshoe recipient. She was a member of Nitro Church of God, where she was former director of Children’s Ministries and the Vacation Bible School program.
Surviving: husband, Joseph F.; son, Joseph Edward Mattox of Frostproof, Florida; daughters, Maxine Igarta of Red Bluff, California, Doloris Erlewine of Nitro, and Joyce Hall of Pt. Pleasant; brothers, James E. Hudson of Washington, Wood County, and Daniel L. Hudson of Fayetteville, North Carolina; sisters, Madeline Redfern of Bonsall, California, Betty Runyon of Waverly, Ohio, Eleanor Marshall of Cross Lanes, and Kathleen Gatens of Elenaor; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

She was a lifelong resident of Hurricane.

Roger L. Karnes, 49, of Winfield died September 29, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was owner of Karnes Lawn Mower Service and president of the Lower Kanawha Valley Sideband Club. He was a Christian.

Joseph McCutcheon
Joseph Lee McCutcheon, 45, of Scott Depot died September 29, 2000, in Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore.
He was an industrial engineer with UPS and is a Navy veteran. He was a 13-year resident of Scott Depot and a tennis player at Teays Valley Tennis Center. He was a member of the United States Tennis Association, having played in the 3.0 Men’s USTA and the 3.5 Men’s USTA.
Surviving: wife, Anna McCutcheon; sons, Robert L. of Ohio and Brian L. at home; parents, Gary L. Sr. and Betty McCutcheon of Fairmont; sister, Cynthia Cramer of Morgantown; brother, Gary L. McCutcheon Jr. of Bridgeport; grandmothers, Sylvia McCutcheon of Mount Lookout and Stella Hanus of Fairmont.
