Gladys Virginia Bailey, 86, of Dunbar, formerly of Scott Depot, died November 19, 2000, in Ruby's Personal Care Home after a long illness.
She was a former employee of Woodrum's Furniture Co., Charleston, and the Charleston School of Commerce.
Surviving: brother, Glenn W. Bailey of Dunbar; sister, Dortha B. Stroud of Memphis, Tennessee.
Service and burial was in Connellsville, Pennsylvania. Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, was in charge of arrangements.

Hada I. Hartley
Hada I. “Mom-Mom” Cottrill Hartley, 87, of Red House died November 17, 2000, at home after a short illness.
She attended Wade Chapel Church, Red House. She was president of the Route 34 Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: daughters, Carol Harrison of Red House and Loretta Painter of Cross Lanes; son, David “Jerry” Hartley of Red House; sister, Grova Harrison of Winfield; brother, Otis Cottrill of Hometown; three granddaughters; three stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; caregivers, Dorothy Rollins, Kathy Barnett and Irene Withrow, all of Liberty.
Service was held Tuesday, November 21, 2000, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Paul Arthur and Pastor Rick Legg officiating. Burial was in Wade Chapel Cemetery, Red House.

Joyce J. Young Irick, 49, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, formerly of Winfield, died November 17, 2000, in Johnson City Medical Center after a long illness.
She was a graduate of Winfield High School and West Virginia State College.
Surviving: son, James Byrd of Cross Lanes; parents, William E. and Jeannie M. Young of Nitro; brothers, William Young Jr. and Keith R. Young, both of Nitro.
Service was held Monday, November 20, 2000, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. Burial was in Old Sims Hill Cemetery, Elizabethton.

Alton R. Oxley
Alton R. Oxley, 57, of Hurricane died November 18, 2000, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a sudden illness.
He was retired from FMC Corp. with 26 years' service. He was a graduate of Hurricane High School and an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.
Surviving: wife, Victoria A. “Vicky” Oxley; son, Nicholas R. of Charleston; daughter, Carrie A. Oxley of Hurricane; father, Raymond C. Oxley of Hurricane; brother, Clifford W. of Culloden; sister, Verna L. Tarkington of Yardley, Pennsylvania.
Service was held Tuesday, November 21, 2000, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Buck Adkins officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Teresa L. Thomasson
Teresa Lynn Thomasson, 36, of Hurricane died November 19, 2000, in Cleveland Clinic after a long illness.
She was manager of Wolford Apartments, Hurricane, and attended First Baptist Church of Hurricane. She was a lifelong resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: husband, Jeff; daughter, Jessica Thomasson at home; son, Kyle at home; parents, Hershel and Rosalie Nutter Thomas of Huricane; sister, Kriste Tolbert of Barboursville; brother, Eric Thomas of Huntington; maternal grandmother, Rosella Nutter of Culloden.
Service was held Wednesday, November 22, 2000, at First Baptist Church of Hurricane. Entombment was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Harold G. Farra Jr.
Harold G. Farra Jr., 39, of Hurricane died November 20, 2000, from injuries received in a traffic accident in Huntington.
He was a maintenance supervisor with Travel Lodge.
Surviving: girlfriend, Elizabeth Bennett; brothers, John T. of Akron, Ohio and Scottie A. of Norfolk, Virginia; sisters, Ruby Thompson of Akron, Penny Lester and Charlotte McClure, both of Hurricane.
A memorial service was held Friday, November 24, 2000, at Reger Funeral Chapel, Huntington.

Augustus G. Tinsley
Augustus Gordon Tinsley, 84, of Hurricane, formerly of Charleston, died November 21, 2000, at home after a short illness.
He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, retired from Union Carbide, South Charleston, with 37 years' service and a former employee of American-Arabian Oil Co., Saudi Arabia. He attended Faith Missionary Baptist Church, St. Albans.
Surviving: sons, James Murphy of Morgantown and Joseph Michael of Orlando, Florida.
The body was donated to the Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University. Burial at a later date in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Ruth Ann Racer
Ruth Ann Racer, 70, of Winfield died November 21, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a former nurse for Thomas Memorial Hospital and a retired supervisor of respiratory therapy for St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. She was a member of Winfield Community Church.
Surviving: husband, John J. “Jim” Racer; sons, John David Racer of Gastonia, North Carolina and Jack William Racer of Mentor, Ohio; sister, Elizabeth Dent of Winfield; brother, John Lanier of South Charleston; two grandsons.
Service was held Saturday, November 25, 2000, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Mike Rader and Minister George Erwin officiating. Burial was in Beech Hill Cemetery, Mason County.

Elizabeth Chapman, 95, of Hurricane died November 23, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was a member of Culloden Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving: daughters, Frances Fallecker of St. Albans, Phyllis Robinson of Culloden, and Judy Williamson of Hortense, Georgia; son, Butch Chapman of Hurricane; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, November 25, 2000, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Claude Spurlock officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursbille.

Bayliss Mynes
Bayliss “Buster” Mynes, 65, of Hurricane died November 23, 2000, after a short illness.
He was retired from Union Carbide Corp. Tech Center with 25 years' service, and a member of Hurricane First Baptist Church and Putnam Masonic Lodge 139.
Surviving: wife, Polly Abbott Mynes; daughters, Jody Rollins of Beckley and Julie Casto of Concord, California; brother, Frank Mynes of Hurricane; sisters, Donna Varian of Hurricane and Janice Fields of Rutherfordton, North Carolina; three grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, November 26, 2000, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Jim McGhee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery, Hurricane.
Elizabeth “Chappie” Chapman
Elizabeth “Chappie” Chapman, 95, of Hurricane, died Thursday, November 23, 2000 in Putnam General Hospital, Hurricane. Survivors include three daughters, Francis “TA” Fallecker of St. Albans, Phyllis Robinson of Culloden, and Judy Williamson of Hortense, Ga.; and one son, Butch Chapman of Hurricane. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 25, 2000 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane; burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

Garrison Ramsey
Garrison Ramsey, 83, of East Lynn, W.Va, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at the home of his son. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at the home of Garrison Ramsey, Rt. 2 East Lynn, by Minister Emual Adkins and Minister Delmer Adkins. Burial in Ramsey-Cende Cemetery near the home. He was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Mingo County, a son of the late Willard Ramsey and Spicy Adkins. He was retired from Steel of West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Lee Ramsey; one daughter, Sue Ramsey; one grandson, Jason Cende; and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Spicy and James P. Cende and Polly Ramsey, both of East Lynn; one son and daughter-in-law, Jones L. and Patty Ramsey of Branchland; six sisters, Candice Ramsey of East Lynn and Ella, Mickey, Mousie, Bonnie and Mary, all of Michigan; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Orville and Shirley Ramsey and Tildon Ramsey, all of Michigan, and Jewett Adkins of Huntington; special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ella and Leonard Bertram; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He made his home with Jennifer Eaves until he went to his son and daughter-in-law's to stay due to his illness. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington, Rick, his nurse, and Susan, his social worker, for their loving care. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Amy Dionne Smlth Dempsey
Amy Dionne Smith Dempsey, 29, of Milton, W.Va., went to be with her Lord, after fighting a courageous battle against cancer, on Nov. 25, 2000. Funeral services were conducted 1Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Frank Brotherton and Jim Clagg. Entombment in Forest Memorial Park Mausoleum in Milton, W.Va. She was born on June 13, 1971 in Huntington, W.Va., daughter of Robert “Bob” Smith and Linda Wallace Smith of Huntington, W.Va. She was preceded in death by two grandparents, Gilbert G. Smith and Pete Wallace; and father-in-law, Roy Dempsey. She was a graduate of Milton High school class of 1989, attended Marshall University for three years working toward a degree in business management. Amy and her husband, Jack, owned Dempsey Construction. She is survived by her loving husband, Roy “Jack” Dempsey; two sons, Luke Evans Dempsey and Mason McKenzie Dempsey; grandparents, Jessie Smith Epling and Susie Wallace; and a very special mother-in-law, Penny Dempsey. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Janet O. Valerio, 70, of Culloden, wife of Leonel Valerio, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital, Hurricane. She was a homemaker. Also surviving are one daughter, Sandra Kay Thomas of Culloden; two sons, Mark D. Valerio of Marysville, Ohio, and Ricky L. Valerio of Culloden; two brothers, John Jarrell of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Robert Jarrell of Kimberly; and four sisters, Myrtle Mayne of Panama City, Fla., Helen Hunter of Wewahitchka, Fla., Koneta Porter of Charleston, S.C., and Alma Schulthies of Slidell, La. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 27, 2000 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley; burial in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Donald Gene Cardwell
Donald Gene Cardwell, 66, of Huntington, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Richard Morrison. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born April 2, 1934, in Cabell County, a son of the late Lonnie and Hettie Gue Cardwell. He was an employee of Kerr Glass for twenty-five and one half years of service and a part-time employee of Best Western Gateway. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the American Legion #16, Huntington. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Marie Cardwell; two sons, Dennis Jenkins of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, and Douglas Lee Cardwell of Tinton Falls, NJ; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. L.J. (Junior) Hesson
L.J. (Junior) Hesson, 77, of Barboursville, passed away Saturday , Nov. 25, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Jamie Jefferson. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. He was born Feb. 4, 1923, in Cabell County, a son of the late Joseph and Cora Brannen Hesson. He was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. He was retired from Houdaille Industries after 35 years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife, Ella M. “Boots” Trevillian Hesson; three daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and Jerry, Shirley and Dallas, Brenda and John; two brothers, Roscoe Hesson and James Hesson, both of Huntington; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one on the way; and two special friends, Bill Bowen and Earmin Midkiff. Pallbearers were Dallas Scarberry, Jerry Wallace, Keith Wallace, Russell Hesson, Brian Dillon and Earmin Midkiff.

Lester Barilla
Lester Barilla, 76, of Kulpmont Pa., widower of Lilly May Black Barilla, died Monday, November 20, 2000 in the Veterans Affairs Hospital Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He was a master tool and die maker for General Motors in Cleveland. Survivors include one son David Barilla of Bensalem, Pa. Graveside services were held at Bias Chapel Cemetery, Milton. Lillian Mae Gibson
Lillian Mae Gibson, 76, of Barboursville, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in St Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Fred Anderson and Rev. Joe Dolen. Burial in Woods Cemetery. She was born June 11, 1924, in Boone County, a daughter of the late William Gobel and Bessie Jane Porter Woods. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Cabell and Charles Woods; four sisters, Ruby Johnson, Leona Lester, Verlie Johnston and Roxie Triplett. She attended Hash Ridge Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Charles Raymond “Lightening” Gibson; two daughters and son-in-law, Sandy and Tim Neal of South Point, Lou Ann and Glen Martin of Barboursville; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Billy Joe Woods of Huntington, Frank and Alisa Vickers of Huntington and Mitchell Vickers of Barboursville; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Freda and Mitchell Short of Huntington and Beatrice Allen of Barboursville; a sister-in-law, Barbara Ann Woods of Barboursville; 12 grandchildren, Josh Carey, Amy Martin, Jonathan Martin, Christopher Vickers, Teresa Holton, Robert Woods, Sheri Jenkins, Pam Carroll, William Allen Woods, Joe Saxton, Leah Saxton and Shane Walls; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Jessica Harless, Patty Pollard, Angie Boe, Ray Carey and family.

Clara Marie Ross, 77, of Huntington went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Rick Black. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. She was born Aug. 28,1923, in Wayne County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Samuel and Armi Bloss Thompson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Scott Ross, one daughter, Karen Sue Ross, four grandchildren, Anita and Darlene Adkins, Donny Wayne and Karen Sue Ferguson; three brothers, Roy Thompson, Jerry Thompson and John Wellman; four sisters, Cythia Crum, Carrie Williams, Nervie Hazlett and Flora Deal. Mr. Joseph Alan Ryder, 22, of Milton passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant, W.Va. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Chapman's Mortuary, with Pastor Jerry Ryder officiating. Burial in Ryder Family Cemetery, Lesage, W.Va. He was born April 11, 1978, in Huntington, a son of Joseph Alan Ryder Sr., of Lesage and Susan Craft Perdue of Milton. He was a laborer. He was preceded in death by grandparents, James and Mildred Craft, great-grandfather, Herbert Rider, great-grandparents, Johnny and Erma Pridemore, Clarence and Grace Riffe and John and Maggie Craft. Mrs. Wanda Darline Fleming, 70, of Huntington, W.Va, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2000, in St Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, November 15, 2000, at Henson Mortuary, by the Rev. Dennis Strawn. Entombment follows in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Mrs. Fleming was born June 23, 1930, in Huntington, daughter of the late Lonnie and Sarah Henderson Burgess. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Otis Herb Fleming; three sons, Richard G. Fleming and his wife Laura of Raleigh, N.C, John A. Fleming of Ironton, Ohio, and Steve Fleming at home; three sisters; one brother; and four grandchildren Stacey, Bryan and Zane Fleming, and Jordan Ginn.

Vincente Mayor DeJoya, 85, of Huntington died Tuesday, November 14, 2000, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, November 17, 2000, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Huntington, with the Rev. Father Joseph Peterson officiating. Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. He was born February 22, 1915, in Romblon, Romblon, Philippines, son of the late Vincente Mayor DeJoya Sr. and Felipa Mayor DeJoya-Sy. He was the retired clerk of court in the Philippines, and was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecilio M. DeJoya and Roldolfo M. DeJoya. Survivors include his wife, Adelina Onas DeJoya; one son and daughter-in-law, Vincente J. DeJoya Jr. and Eden M. Chavez DeJoya of the Philippines; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Lorraine and Manuel L. Estacio of Chapel Hill N.C, Jocelyn J. and Dr. Gualberto M. Marcelo Jr. of Huntington, Vivien and Renato Arco of Australia, Geraldine and Ruel Cayamanda of the Philippines, Dr. Mary Adeline 0. DeJoya of Australia, and Melba J. and Manuel Alcazar of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Adela J. Mayor of the Philippines and Fe M S-Logan of Chicago, Ill., and 16 grandchildren, Ray Ferdinand, Ray Frederick, Aileen Joyce, Carolyn June, Catherine Joy, Christina, Raphael, Rene Vincent, Rene Vieve, Rene Vesper, Anna Leigh, Cheryl Ann, Koster Vincent, Melissa, Mychal and Matthew. Lillie Margaret Saunders, 68, of Winfield died November 11, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of Red House United Brethren Independent Church.
Surviving: husband, Allen Eugene Saunders; daughters, Sharon Lynch of Nitro and Deborah Tyree of Hurricane; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, November 15, 2000, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Joe Scarberry officiating. Entombment was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Cross Lanes.

Carla J. Cox
Carla J. Cox, 37, of Scott Depot, formerly of Virden, Illinois and St. Albans, died November 13, 2000, in General Division, CAMC, after a short illness.
She was a homemaker, a student at West Virginia Junior College, and a member of Faith Freewill Baptist Church, St. Albans.
Surviving: companion, Jerry Priddy; daughters, Jessica Brown of Madison and Alyson Swift of Charleston; brothers, Mark Hupp of Virden and Danny Hupp of Waverly, Illinois; sisters, Penny Reynolds of Springfield, Illinois and Carolyn Henson of Waverly; one granddaughter; one stepgrandson.
Service was held Thursday, November 16, 2000, at Faith Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Delmer Young officiating. The body was cremated and burial will be in Virden Cemetery. Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.

Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Angela Smith
Angela Rosetta Ayers Smith, 26, of Black Betsy died November 14, 2000, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Smith's body was found outside the Putnam County Park Gun Club.
She was an employee of McDonald's in Winfield, attended Black Betsy Community Church and was a member of the World Famous Poet Society, New York City, and Nitro Moose Lodge.
Surviving: husband, Danford Lee Smith; sons, Danford Pershing Snowden Smith and Nacomey Dawson Smith, both at home; mother, Joyce Ayers of Bancroft; father, Gary Wayne Ayers of Charleston; sister, Rebecca Jane Ayers of Bancroft; half sister, Crystal Ayers of Charleston; maternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Beryl and Verneda Beal of Cross Lanes; paternal grandparents, Jack and Geneva Ayers of Campbells Creek.
Service was held Thursday, November 16, 2000, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Denver Tucker officiating.

Virginia M. Richardson
Virginia M. Shamblen Richardson, 77, of Hometown died November 14, 2000, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a short illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County, a homemaker and a former employee of Fletcher Enamel, Dunbar.
Surviving: sons, Timothy R. of Tornado and Charles E. of Hometown; sister, Ruth McClanahan of Red House; seven grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, November 17, 2000, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Kenny Roberts officiating. Burial was in Showen Cemetery, Bancroft.
