Richard Ray Curry, 64, of Huntington passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Saturday Dec. 2, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Lonnie Wilson. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born Dec. 1, 1935, in Logan, WVa, a son of the late Homer and Laura Russ Curry. He was also preceded in death by one son, Steven H. Curry and one brother, John Curry. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Melba Bates Curry; one daughter, Melanie L. Curry of Huntington; one son James “Jay”” Curry, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Melvin and Birdie Bates; one brother, Jerome Curry of Charleston, one aunt Kathleen Wise of Charleston; one uncle, John Russ of Florida; one special uncle, Gail Johnson; two special aunts, Reba and Dorcas; a special little friend, Brittany Eubanks; and close friends, Jack Johnson, Sam Carter and Nedra Dingess. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Earley Francis Holley
Earley Francis Holley, 86, of Hurricane, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2O00, at home. He was a retired mechanic from Local 132 Operating Engineers. He was a member of Adda Baptist Church. He was born February 9, 1914, to James M. and Malinda Clagg Holley. He was the last of his generation. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Nannie Whitt Holley. He is survived by four sons and two daughters, Joseph and Marvin of Hurricane, Hersel of Milton, David of Prospect, Conn., Janice Blackshire of Hurricane and Judy Houck of Proctorville, Ohio.. He is also survived by 37 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, W.Va, was in charge of arrangements. Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Friday, December 1, 2000, at Adda Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Moses and the Rev. Tim Gilfilen. Burial in Holley Cemetery.

Elvena “Mitz” Hatfield Johnson
Elvena “Mitz” Hatfield Johnson, 88, of Barboursville, beloved mother and grandmother, went to her heavenly home Sunday, November 26, 2000. A Celebration of Life Service was conducted Wednesday, November 29, 2000, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Ed Grant and the Rev. Ralph Sager. Burial in Enon Cemetery. She was a member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church for 58 years and a member of the Mary Circle. She was an avid bowler in the Huntington area for many years. She was a wonderful mother, housewife, homemaker and she enjoyed cooking for her neighbors and friends. She was born September 8, 1912, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Austin and Anzoe Bledsoe Hatfield. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edgar L. Johnson on January 1, 1972; one sister, Minnie Bledsoe; and four brothers, Raymond, Leamond, Joe and Woodrow Hatfield. She is survived by five daughters, Wilma Odell and husband Bryant of Arlington Heights, Ill., Peggy Neal and the late Nobel Neal Jr., of Barboursville, Donna Thabet and husband Fred of Roseville, Mich., Brenda Cornwell and husband Pat of Barboursville and Sherry Boring and husband Roger of Cape Coral Fla.; two sons, Delano Johnson and wife Carole and Jerry Johnson and wife Phyllis, all of Barboursville; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Steele Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund. The family deeply appreciates the kindness of the Emergency Room staff of Cabell Huntington Hospital, Gigi Gerlach, the Rev. Nate Lacy, Dr. Beth Toppings and Dr. Mike Gibbs.

Harry Mills Chapman
Harry Mills Chapman,87, of Milton, passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, in Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Graveside services were held Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. Harry was born in Cabell Co., WV, on Feb. 10, 1913, a son of the late Elaijah and Ida Mae (Estell) Chapman. He was also preceded in his death by his wife, Mary Kathryn Chapman, who passed away on June 7, 1995; he was also preceded by several brothers and sisters, Nona, Jim, Carl, Grace, Reva and Love; and one granddaughter, Whitnee Rae. Harry was a retired chief operator for Union Carbide. He was a 1933 Milton High School graduate and he attended the Morris Harvey College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 139, Milton. He was a member of the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey A. and Suzanna Chapman of Milton, and John Wesley and Misti Chapman of Point Pleasant; six grandchildren, Cristy, Jo Ellen, Tracy Lynn, Derek, Gina and Austin; one great-grandson, Douglas Tyler Mills King; and special friend, Lynn McComas. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Howard Lilly
Howard Lilly, 92, of Deland, Fla., formerly of Milton, died Monday, November 27, 2000, at home. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 3, 2000, at Heck Funeral Home. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. Mr. Lilly was the husband of Anna Payne Lilly and a son of the late Floyd E. and Dorcus Bias Lilly. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Pifer Lilly; daughter, Carolyn Hutchinson; son-in-law, Jack Crookshanks; grandson, Stephen Crookshanks; three brothers, Walter, Meredith and Byron; and three sisters, Josephine Ball, Esther McDonie and Mildred Stewart. A retired carpenter, Mr. Lilly was an avid Gardener, renown in Deland for his roses. A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, for many years he provided flowers to the church for Sunday services. In addition his wife of 49 years, Anna, he is also survived by two daughters, Mareta Crookshanks of Milton and Sandy Ward and husband Scott of Lansdale, Pa.; two sisters, Ermalee Vickers of Milton and Evelyn Quinby of Youngstown, Ohio; grandchildren, Brenda Martin, Laura and Bryan Ward, Theresa Boone and Tim Hutchinson.

Edith Spence Rousseau
Edith Spence Rousseau, 93, of Westover, WV, died Saturday, December 2, 2000, in Huntington, WV, at the home of her daughter, Kathryn Victoria Rousseau. She was born February 4, 1907 in Myersdale, Pennsylania, the daughter of the late John D. and Katherine Poole Spence of Morgantown. She was also preceded in death by a son, Donald F. Rousseau; a twin sister, Evelyn Scott; sisters, Ruth Spence and Agnes Spence Moore; and brothers, John Spence and Marshall Watkins. She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn; three sons, Bill Rousseau of Houston, Texas, James Rousseau of Springfield, Missouri and Ronald Jenkins of Oceanside, California; eleven grandchildren, James, Steve, Jennifer, and Mary Jo and Stacey Spencer, Sandra Pence, and Sheila Peterson; and ten great-grandchildren. Graveside services were conducted at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Morgantown, WV. Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Ona Bell Childers
Ona Bell Childers, 71, of Hurricane died November 27, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and attended Providence Baptist Church.
Surviving: daughters, Ramona Kaye Doneff of Culloden and Rebecca Faye Flippin of Hurricane; sons, Robert Wayne and Gary Lee, both of Scott Depot, and James “Jimmy” of Athen, Ohio; sister, Christine Dudding of Scott Depot; brother, Olsley Howard Tucker of Scott Depot; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, November 29, 2000, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Robert W. Kelly officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.

Ella Louise Smith
Ella Louise “Shirley” Wells Smith, 73, of Hurricane died November 26, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was former owner/operator of the Route 17 Motel, Pliny, Shirley's Lunch, South Charleston, and Chatter's Drive In on U.S. 60. She was a lifelong resident of the Kanawha Valley.
Surviving: companion, Ray Hartwell; daughter, Patricia Rapp Jones of Charleston; sisters, Reba Kay Jones of St. Albans, Anna Mae Anderson of Clearwater, Florida, Glenna Wells of Charleston, and Lorraine Fay Rock; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, November 29, 2000, at Good Shepher Mortuary, South Charleston, with the Rev. James Dillo officating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Cecilia A. Black
Cecilia A. “Sis” Hudson Black, 67, of Red House died November 28, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospial, Huntington, after a short illness.
She was a homemaker and attended Buffalo United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and was very active in the many works of the church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Dove Yates Hudson, and brother, F.L. “Dick” Martin.
Surviving: husband, Ralph “Sam” Black; brothers, Robert “Bob” Hudson of Winfield and Forrest Hudson of Red House; niece, Kathy James; special relative, Fay Hudson; she was a surrogate mother to Doug Bates, Dickie Martin, DeeDee and Bobby Blackshire.
Service was held Thursday, November 30, 2000, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Herk McGraw and the Rev. Jay Parkins officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memoirial Gardens, Red House.

Michael Joseph Leslie
Michael Joseph “Joe” Leslie, 46, of Winfield died November 27, 2000, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Winfield and attended Winfield Baptist Church.
Surviving: mother, Wilma Hodges Leslie of Winfield; sisters, Marilyn Christani of Danbury, Connecticut, Charlotte Totten and Anita L. Yeager, both of Scott Depot, and Debra L. Chapman of Hurricane; brothers, John F. of Hurricane, William E., Clyde S. “Butch” and Robert, all of Winfield; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Thursday, November 30, 2000, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. J.D. Harrah, the Rev. Jeffrey Johnson and the Rev. E. Ted Wall officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. The family requests memorial donations to the Joe Leslie Scholarship Fund, c/o Teays Valley Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 100, Scott Depot WV 25560.

Janet Louise Pringle
Janet Louise Pringle, 53, of Bancroft died November 27, 2000, in Ann Dean's Personal Care Home after a short illness.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bancroft.
Surviving: sisters, Mary Jordan of Red House, Theresa Persinger, Anita Goff and Leah Ann Reid, both of ALexandria, Virginia; brothers, John of Liberty and Joe of Poca.
Service was held Thursday, November 30, 2000, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Red House, with the Rev. Dean Borgmeyer officiating. Burial was in the Memorial Gardens. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Una Mae Robinson
Una Mae Robinson, 82, of Hurricane died November 27, 2000, in SunBridge Nursing Home, Hurricane, after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Hurricane, a Protestant and a homemaker.
Surviving: caregiver, Doris Bird of Hurricane; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service was held Thursday, November 30, 2000, in Hurricane Cemetery with Jim McGehee officiating. Allen Funeral home, hurricane, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Ivan Audry Woodall
Ivan Audry Woodall, 91, of Nitro died November 27, 2000, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He was a graduate of Poca High School, Morris Harvey College and Marshall College. He was a former Putnam County schoolteacher and was retired from Monsanto, Nitro. He was a member of Hometown Senior Citizens and the Redeemed Four Quartet. He was former director of the Senior Citizens Choir and attended West Virginia Home Mission Church, Nitro.
Surviving: son, Ernest Sr. of Poca; sister, Hazel Thaxton of Charleston; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, November 30, 2000, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Paul Arthur, Pastor Ray Humphrey, Pastor Billy Lanham and Pastor Joe Scarberry officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Cleon H. Craig
Cleon Herbert “Rusty” Craig, 67, of Robertsburg died November 29, 2000, at home after a long illness.
He was a retired mechanic for Ravenswood Aluminum with 37 years' service and attended Manilla Chapel Church and Turkey Branch Community Church. He was a graduate of Buffalo High School.
Surviving: wife, Betty Jane Sayre Craig; daughter, Linda Ann Halstead of Letart; sons, Cleon Herbert Craig Jr. of Cross Lanes and Michael Lee Craig of Buffalo; stepdaughter, Connie Sue Warner of West Union, Ohio; stepsons, Ronnie Sayre of Robertsburg and Johnny Wayne Sayre of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Iona Grady of Leon, Ella Hill of Buffalo, Jo Higginbotham of Leon, and Hazel Absten of Winfield; brothers, Howard Craig and Roy Craig, both of Buffalo, and Johnny Craig of Robertsburg; 10 grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, December 2, 2000, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Minister George Erwin and the Rev. Arlis Blackshire officiating. Burial was in Betty's Family Cemetery, Grimms Landing.

Earley Francis Holley
Earley Francis Holley, 86, of Hurricane died November 29, 2000, at home.
He was a retired mechanic and a member of the Operating Engineers Union and Adda Baptist Church.
Surviving: sons, Joseph and Marvin, both of Hurricane, Hersel of Milton, and David of Prospect, Connecticut; daughters, Janice Blackshire of Hurricane and Judy Houck of Proctorville, Ohio; 37 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Judy B. Carney
Judy B. Carney, 84, of Lakin died November 29, 2000, in Pleasant Valley Hospital, Pt. Pleasant, after a long illness.
She was a native of Liberty and attended Liberty Community Church.
Surviving: brothers, Earl Carney of Red House and Loren Carney of Charleston; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Saturday, December 2, 2000, at Haven of Rest Mrmorial Gardens Chapel, Red House, with the Rev. Nyle Fisher officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Paul E. Leadmon
Paul E. “Sampson” Leadmon, 71, of Hurricane died November 29, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was retired from Columbia Gas Transmission with 39 years' service. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of American Legion Post 139, Milton.
Surviving: wife, Betty Casto Leadmon; daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” Connery of Hurricane; sons, Paul E. “Butch” II and William Joseph “Bill,” both of Hurricane; sisters, Peggy L. Gibson and Belma L. Withrow, both of Hurricane; brothers, Charles R., Sr. and Donald R., both of Hurricane.
Service was held Saturday, December 2, 2000, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Philip Bower, the Rev. James Baker and Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Jacob Paul Legg
Jacob Paul Legg, infant son of Rick and Malinda Legg of Red House, was stillborn November 30, 2000, in Women and Children's Hospital, CAMC.
Also surviving: sister, Heather Legg of Red House; brother, Nathan Legg of Red House; maternal grandparents, Jack and Evelyn Craigo of Red House; paternal grandmother, Flossie Legg of Red House; maternal great-grandmother, Evelyn “Babe” Craigo of Red House.
Graveside service was held Sunday, December 3, 2000, in Shiloh Cemetery, Red House, with Pastor Nyle Fisher and Pastor Paul Arthur officiating. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Jean Raines
Ruby Jean Raines, 57, of Hurricane died November 30, 2000, at home after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Hurricane and a member of Laywell Church of Christ, Hurricane.
Surviving: husband, Douglas; daughter, Carol Raines of Hurricane; son, Darrell of Hurricane; mother, Bessie Smith of Hurricane; sisters, Verna Smith and Jewel Smith, both of Hurricane.
Service was held Saturday, December 2, 2000, at Laywell Church of Christ with Lloyd Mitchel officiating. Burial was in Sycamore Cemetery, Hurricane. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Nellie M. Hedrick, 85, of Poca died December 1, 2000, in Heartland of Charleston after a long illness.
She attended Elizabeth Baptist Church, Bancroft.
Surviving: daughter, Gloria J. Bumgardner of Red House; sons, Donald H. of Cocoa, Florida, Robert W. of Madisonville, Texas, and Gordon D. of Raymond City; stepdaughter, Phyllis Mallory of St. Albans; brothers, Elmer Tolbert of Nitro, Roy Tolbert of Hurricane, and the Rev. Coy Tolbert of Salisbury, North Carolina; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, December 3, 2000, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Jeff Arthur and the Rev. Coy Tolbert officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Mildred M. Gunno
Mildred M. Gunno, 81, of Poca died December 2, 2000, in General Division, CAMC, after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and member of Harmon's Creek Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving: husband, the Rev. O.R. Gunno; daughters, Sarah Schmidt of Bennettsville, South Carolina and Judy Patrick of Poca; sons, Earl of Charleston and Ronald of Centerville, Ohio; sister, Edna Kidd of Charleston; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Service was held Monday, December 4, 2000, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with the Rev. Gary Hayes and the Rev. Mervin Smith officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Louise Dean
Louise Dean, 68, of Red House, formerly of Nitro, died December 2, 2000, at home after a long illness.
Surviving: husband, Edward L. Dean; daughters, Rebecca Bailey of Danielson, Connecticut and Vanessa Owsley of Nitro; sons, Richard of Poca, David of Winfield, Thomas of Hurricane, and Terry of Kincaid; stepson, Sonny Dean of Parkersburg; sister, Norma Olive of Kenna; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, December 5, 2000, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Franklin Lett officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Red House.

Lawrence H. Snider
Lawrence Hobert “John” Snider, 87, of Hurricane, formerly of Clarksburg, died December 3, 2000, at home after a short illness.
He was retired from Weirton Steel with 30 years' service and attended Upper Room Church, Clarksburg.
Surviving: daughters, Patricia Ault of Toronto, Ohio, Bonnie Alvarez and Virginia Wining, both of Hurricane, Jennifer Knight of Clarksburg, and Eileen Cashdollar of Follansbee; sons, Ronald Scott of Washington state, and Vincent Manley of Clarksburg; sister, Oma Utt of Nevada; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Tuesday, December 5, 2000, at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, Clarksburg, with the Rev. Frank Shreve officiating. Burial was in Boring Cemetery, Clarksburg. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of local arrangements.

Charles W. Ball
Charles W. Ball, 78, of Red House died December 2, 2000, at home after a short illness.
He was retired from Libbey-Owens-Ford with 26 years' service and was a Coast Guard veteran.
Surviving: wife, Patricia C. Ball; daughters, Debi McCoy of Bancroft, Becky Holston of Red House, and Reba Smith of Eleanor; sons, Dewey A. Ball of Poca, Clinton Stone of Milton, Florida, Roy Stone of Hemet, California, and Philip Ball of Waldorph, Maryland; sisters, Reba Kidd of Ormond Beach, Florida and Eileen Colman of Holly Hill, Florida; brothers, Edward and Raymond, both of Mississippi; seven grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, December 5, 2000, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor James M. Legg officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Marian Lou Johnson
Marian Lou Johnson, 70, of Huntington, W.Va, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 6 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by Bishop Gary Carrico. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. She was born March 10, 1930, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Charles Edward Wolfe and Bertha Mabel Austin Wolfe of Hurricane. She was a secretary for the Cabell County Board of Education and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In addition to her mother, surviving are her husband, Elwyn Johnson; four sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Jan Johnson of Riverton, Utah, Steve and Connie Johnson of Highland, Utah, Neal and Shirley Johnson of Alpine, Utah, and Ty and Pam Johnson of Collegeville, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Jeff Woodard of Bothell Wash.; 23 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements. The family wishes to express their special thanks to Hospice of Huntington, personnel at Health South, Dr. Timothy Saxe and his staff, and family, friends and neighbors for their care and help.
