Phyllis Ann “Sue” Short, 43, of Lesage, W.Va, went to be with the Lord Sunday, January 14, 2001, in Pleasant Valley Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 18, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville by the Rev. James Jobe. Burial in Greenbottom Memorial Park. She was born February 23, 1957, in Huntington, a daughter of Lena Oldaker Short of Lesage and the late Marion Short. Also surviving are five daughters, Tamatha Hughes of Huntington, Jamie Faulkner of Culloden and Amy Hughes, Melinda Dawn Hughes and Ivy Hughes, all of Lesage; two sisters, Martha Lanham and Pam Short, both of Lesage; five brothers, Mike Short and Anthony Short, both of Barboursville, and Gary Short, Jeff Vance and John Short, all of Lesage; and two grandsons, Cameron Joseph Adkins of Huntington and Zachary Aaron Reynolds of Culloden.
Beatrice Belle Delancy
Beatrice Belle Delancy, 85, of Huntington, died Sunday, January 14, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at Steele Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ed Grant and the Rev. Ralph Sager. Entombment in Woodmere Memorial Park. She was born April 6, 1915, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late John W. and Mary Ann Prater Trent. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jane Rice; one sister, Gladys Sims; and one brother, Earl Sturm. She was a beautician and was owner of Delancy Beauty Shop. She was a member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church and a life member of VFW Post #9738 Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Leonard “Doc” Delancy; one son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Elizabeth Rice of Barboursville; her father’s second wife, Bessie Trent of Huntington and their two children Reba Clark of Dayton, Ohio, and Ted Trent of Huntington; two grandchildren, Kelly Shivel and Bret Rice; four great-grandchildren, Kristina Shivel, Harry Shivel III, Elizabeth Reynolds and Jason Reynolds; and several nieces and nephews. Cleo H. “Chris” Coleman, 76, of Barboursville, wife of John W.E. Coleman, died Sunday, January 14, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital. She was retired secretary and treasurer of Machinery Inc. Also surviving are one son, Michael L. Coleman of Hurricane; three grandchildren, Gregory Coleman, Michele Detwiler and Kristina Coleman; and five great-grandchildren, Jessica Coleman, Adam Coleman, Kyle Detwiler, Jerad Detwiler and Logan Detwiler. Henry Thomas Lewis, 85, of Huntington, formerly of Barboursville, died on January 14, 2001, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, January 17, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Paul Day and the Rev. Earnest Earl. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born on June 26, 1915, in Barboursville, a son of the late Griff and Gay Cyrus Lewis. He had been a retired truck driver and was retired from the C&O Railroad. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Bledsoe Lewis. He is survived by three daughters, Roberta Adams and Juanita McGlothin, both of Huntington, and Charlotte Tabor of Barboursville; one son, Lowell Thomas Lewis of Milton; one who was like a son, Larry McGlothin; one brother, Luther Lewis of Barboursville; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Vivien Lowell Kuhn
Vivien Lowell Kuhn, 78, of Huntington passed away Saturday, January 13, 2001, in St Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 17, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Minister Alan Cole. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born July 19, 1922, in Barboursville, a son of the late Kenna and Maggie Adkins Kuhn. He was a member of 26th Street Church of Christ, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving. in World War II, and was a member of American Legion Post #177 Barboursville. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Kim Peyton of Houston, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Connie Kuhn of Huntington and Kelly and Mary Beth Kuhn of Barboursville; two sisters, Mary Rice and Marie Kuhn, both of Barboursville; one brother, Cebert E. Kuhn of Chapmanville, W.Va.; seven grandchildren: and five great-grandchildren.
Shirley B. Smith
Shirley B. Smith, 86, of Huntington, passed away Monday, January 15, 2001, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 17, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. David Cardwell. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born May 24, 1914, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Albert O. and Maggie Mae Dillon Blankenship. She was a retired Registered Nurse, and was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Smith in 1973, and four brothers. She is survived by one sister, Reba “Becky” Blankenship of Huntington; special nephews, Robert “Bob” Blankenship and Tyler Blankenship; and several nieces and nephews.
James Harold Caldwell
James Harold Caldwell, 84, of Malcolm Springs, Milton went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 15, 2001 in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 18, 2001 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor Paul Meadows and Rev. Richard Black officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born August 29, 1916 in Cabell County, WV a son of the late James and Theo McCormick Caldwell. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde and Ralph Caldwell. James Harold was retired from Houdaille Industries, Huntington with 32 -1/2 years of service. He was a life long resident of Cabell County. He was a member of Beulah Ann Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Christine Clark Caldwell; four sisters, Hazel Bond of Ona; Frances Beckett and Anne Wetherhold both of Milton, and Iva Mae Rider of Ona; three brothers, Gene Caldwell, Carl Cladwell, and John Caldwell all of Ona. Kenneth Lee Gillenwater
Kenneth Lee Gillenwater, 77, of Indianapolis, Indiana, formerly of West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 8, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 12, 2001 at Conkle Funeral Home Lynhurst Chapel, Indianapolis, Indiana, by the Rev. Kenneth Taylor. Entombment at Floral Park Cemetery. Kenneth was born Oct. 24, 1923, a son of the late Frank and Florence Gillenwater. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Lee Wilson Gillenwater March 22, 2000, a sister Orpha Maye Gillenwater died July 22, 1922 and two brothers Roy Leonard Gillenwater June 14, 1958 and Clifford Gillenwater January 17, 1995. Survivors include two sisters Juanita Gist and Edith Vititoe both of Indianapolis, Ind.; four grandchildren including one very special Granddaughter, Becky Kinkead; and seven great-grandchildren. Kenneth was an electrician for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 481 and American Legion Post 64. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. He will be sadly missed by all.
Corbett G. Carnell
Corbett G. Carnell, 80, of Liberty died January 14, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a long illness.
He was born January 8, 1921, the son of the late Basil Carnell and Zelma Boggess. His wife of 40 years, Glenita S. Carnell, preceded him in death in 1997.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, retired from Union Carbide with 15 years of service, and was a retired farmer.
Surviving: daughters, Phyllis Woods of Barboursville, with whom he made his home, Nellie Stone of Cross Lanes, and Carolyn White of Ohio; sons, Darrell Carnell of Bowling Green, Kentucky and Golden Carnell of Leon; sisters, Leoda Faber of Goldtown, Naomi Baldwin of Cross Lanes, and Anna Workman of Huntington; brother, Oshell Carnell of Big Chimney; six grandchildren and one very special grandson, Richard Carnell of Fairplain; several great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, January 18,, 2001, at Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with the Rev. Jim Phillips officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.
Orville W. Ash
Orville Wright “Joe” Ash, 84, of Minden, Louisiana died recently in Minden.
He was born July 11, 1916 in Mason County, West Virginia to the late Birdie and Charles Ash. He was also preceded in death by siblings, Clayton Ash and Gene Ash.
He graduated from Buffalo (WV) High School and then served in the U.S. Army from 1940-45. In 1945, while attached to the P.O.W. Camp at Ruston, LA, he met and married Neoma Sexton of Minden. Joe worked until his retirement as a pipefitter through UA Local 123 of Tampa, Florida.
He was a 33 degree Mason and a member of the Shreveport Scottish Rites, El Karrebah Shrine Club and Lakeview United Methodist Church in Minden. He loved the game of football, a good conversation and a good debate. He loved the social aspects of politics and loved to participate in large construction projects and to look back and say “I helped build that!”
After WW II he was active in union organizing and believed until his death that “it is ok for working folks to make a working wage.” He lived a long and good life. Most of his early childhood friends have gone before him and those of us who are left behind will miss his straight forward and honest heart.
Surviving: wife, Neoma of Minden; daughters, Janet L. Ash and Linda Ash Simmons, both of Minden; son, E.T. Ash of College Station, Texas; brother, Thomas Ash of Winchester, Virginia.
Service was held Wednesday, December 20, 2000, at Rose-Neath Chapel, Minden. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery near Minden. Memorial donations may be sent to Shriners Children’s Hospital or Lakeview United Methodist Church.
Sarah Nicole Halburn
Sarah Nicole Halburn, daughter of Mark and Dolores Martin Halburn of Hurricane, was stillborn January 12, 2001, at Women and Children’s Hospital, CAMC.
Also surviving: maternal grandmother, Margaret Martin of Charleston; paternal grandparents, James and Nancy Halburn of La Puente, California.
Service was held Friday, January 19, 2001, at Stevens and Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with the Rev. Mark Conn and the Rev. Larry Campbell officiating. Burial was in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.
Franklin C. Hammack Sr.
Franklin Clarence Hammack Sr., 82, of Midway died January 16, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was a 47-year resident of Midway and formerly lived in Paradise. He was retired from Smith Transfer with 35 years of service, was a member of Teamsters Local 175, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Midway United Methodist Church since 1937.
Surviving: wife, Rebecca Hudson Hammack; daughters, Patricia Jividen of Midway, Betty Hammack and Mary Jividen, both of Eleanor; son, Franklin C. Jr. of Hagerstown, Maryland; sisters, Rosalie Martin of Parkersburg, Lucille Calentine of Brandenburg, Kentucky, and Doris Thornton of Smyrna, Georgoa; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, January 19, 2001, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Herk McGraw officiating. Interment
will be in the Noffsinger Section of Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.
Warren H. White
Warren H. White, 79, of Hurricane died January 13, 2001, at Munroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Florida, after a short illness.
He was a member of Baptist Temple and a member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in West Virginia and Florida. He was also a member of Society of CPA, Charleston Exchange Club and the University Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving: wife, Virginia White of Hurricane; stepson, Lynn W. Tyree of Charleston; brother, Wilson White of Orlando, Florida; sisters, Wanda Engle and Floretta Williams, both of Charleston; five stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; five stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Alvin Kenton Bowles, 68, of Grimms Landing died January 18, 2001, in Flat Rock after a short illness.
He was a retired boiler operator for Lakin State Hospital and a groundskeeper for the town of Eleanor with 10 years’ service. He attended Oma Chapel Church, Grimms Landing.

Randall L. “Randy” Linville, 40, of Orlando, Florida, formerly of Winfield, died January 18, 2001, in Sand Lake Hospital, Orlando, after a short illness.
He was a real estate salesman for Fairfield Communities, Orlando, a member of the Eleanor Baptist Church, a graduate of Buffalo High School and an Army veteran.

Robert Lee Ice
Robert Lee Ice, 73, of Lanexa, Virginia, formerly of Poca, died January 19, 2001, in Chiptenham Medical Center, Richmond, after a long illness.
He was a graduate of Poca High School and had attended West Virginia University and Morris Harvey College. He was a Marine Corps veteran, a former Methodist lay minister and a former employee of Monsanto Chemical Company, Nitro.
Surviving: son, Daniel Benjamin Ice of Lanexa; sister, Thalia Carney of South Charleston; grandchildren, Diamon Lee Ice of Seattle, Justin Wayne Ice with the Marine Corps in Okinawa, Ashley Diane Ice of Cross Lanes, Benjamin Scott Ice and Margaret Elizabeth Ice, both of Lanexa; one great-granddaughter.

Stephen Allan Stanley
Stephen Allan Stanley, 50, of Milton, died Thursday, January 18, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 21, 2001, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. James Jobe officiating. Burialin Balls Gap Cemetery, Milton. Allan was born February 27, 1950, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of Ruth Cobb Stanley of Milton and Delmar and Rose Stanley Sr. of Milton. He was a 1968 graduate of Milton High School and a 1973 graduate of Marshall University. He was a former employee of CSX. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Delmar and Cindy Stanley Jr. of Milton; one step-sister, Jamie Fetty of Milton; two nieces, Melanie and Monica Stanley, both of Milton; one nephew, Darin Stanley of Milton; and one special little great-nephew, Dru Stanley of Teays Valley.

He was born November 10, 1962 in Huntington, a son of Dorcas “Dot” Bryan Dillard of Huntington, and Bernard Thomas Dillard of Orlando, FL. He was a member of the Johns Creek Church of Christ. Also surviving are two brothers and a sister-in-law, Tony Dale, Robyn Dillard and Tommy D. Dillard, all of Muncie, IN; one niece, Brooke Dillard; one nephew, Mark Dillard; his best friends, Robert Bertram; a great-uncle and aunt, Louie and Jean White of Huntington; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Michael Angelo Nicolai, 55, of Huntington, W.Va, died Jan. 19, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, with Minister Gary McClellan presiding, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Barboursville, W.Va. He was born July 22, 1945, in Parkersburg, W.Va., a son of the late Dante Nicolai and Martha Cairns Hyre Nicolai. Mr. Nicolai was employed by Tri-State Coffee. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Barboursville. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Ann Capehart Nicolai of Huntington, W.Va.; two daughters, Heather Baldridge and husband, Terry, and Crystal Roberts and husband, Brian, of Huntington, W.Va.; one brother, Robert Dante Nicolai and wife, Gail Nicolai of Parkersburg, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Keenan Baldridge of Barboursville, WV, and Caleb Roberts and Annie Roberts of Huntington, W.Va.; and three nephews, Robert, Jason and Jacob Nicolai. Roger Dale Lawson, 53, of Charleston, W.Va., formerly of Ona, died January 6, 2001, in Central DuPage Hospital Winfield, Ill. A memorial service was held Saturday, January 20, 2001, at Henson Mortuary, Huntington. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born June 19, 1947, in Ona, a son of the late Arlie “Shorty” and Oretha Stewart Lawson. Mr. Lawson was a 1966 graduate of Milton High School and graduated from the Huntington School of Beauty Culture. He was Vietnam veteran, having served with the 153rd Engineering Detachment as a Firefighter, Crash and Rescue Unit member. Mr. Lawson was a hairstylist, instructor and “Jack of All Trades.” Survivors include his partner in life, William Arnold of Charleston; three sisters, Darlis Stutler of Huntington, Dixie Daniels of Barboursville and Elizabeth Keck of Ohio; two brothers, Walter Lawson of Ona and Billy Lawson of Granberry, Texas; and five nieces and six nephews. Beverly Sue Dailey, 52, of Ona, went home to be with the Lord Friday, January 12, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 16, 2001 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Carl Lilly. Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery. She was born December 10, 1948 in Huntington, a daughter of Renzy and Colleen Scarberry of Lesage. She was a retired secretary with the Cabell County Board of Education Central Office. She was a graduate of Marshall University and a member of Barker Ridge United Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Alva E. Dailey, Sr. She is survived by her husband, Rev. James L Dailey; two daughters and one son-in-law, Monica and Mike Vanscoy of Rock Hill, South Caroline, and Myra Dailey at home; one sister, Sandy Winters and her husband, David, of Lesage; two brothers, Randy Scarberry and his wife, Debby, of Lesage, and Mike Scarberry and his wife, Tina, of Enon, Ohio; her mother-in-law, Helen Dailey of Ona; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Elliott Matison “Matt” Harold
Elliott Matison “Matt” Harold, 75, died January 13, 2001 at his residence. Born of Elliott Conse and Edith Louise Hatfield in Cleveland, OH, he was a direct descendant of Devil Anse Hatfield. He attended Marshall Lab School. After his schooling he went to work with Carnes Promotions, traveling the country as advanced promotions for Star Spangled Circus and the Star Circus. He later worked for Interstate Upholstery Company as field promotions and as advertising manager for the United Furniture Stores. He was a member of the former Central Methodist Church and was on the board of directors and president of the men's group. He was also a CB radio enthusiast. In his later years he worked for Grey Seal Paint Company in Milton and was also manager of the Short Stop Carryout Market of Milton. He entered the Masonic Order in the late 70s and was a member and former officer of Huntington Lodge 53 AF & AM, working the chairs and as principle coach for candidates in Lodge 53 and Milton Lebanon 68 Masonic Lodge. He is also a member of the Beni Kedem, Huntington Clown Alley, Scottish Rite Masons, Chapter 6 Royal Arch Masons, Huntington Commandery #9 Knights Templer and also a Kentucky Colonel. When he moved back to the Huntington area he became a resident of Westview Manor High Rise, where he was president of the residents' association for several years. He has no surviving family but is survived by a host of friends and Masonic brothers. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 16, 2001 at Chapman's Mortuary, with Pastor Larry Greene officiating. Masonic graveside rites were conducted by Masonic Lodge 53 AF & AM at Spring Hill Cemetery in a family plot. Chapman's Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington.
Walter “Buck” Wayne Mount
Walter “Buck” Wayne Mount, 65, of Glenwood passed away Thursday, January 11, 2001 in St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness. Services were conducted Sunday, January 14, 2001, at Milton Funeral Home by the Rev. Douglas Goodson. Interment
in Union Ridge Cemetery. He was born March 12, 1935, in Cabell County, a son of the late James Perry and Ida Mae Paxton Mount. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Clovis P. Mount, Alvie E. Mount, Vincent E. Mount and Henry S. Mount and one sister, Margaret M. Edmunds. He was retired from Pressley Ridge Schools. He went to Spurlock Creek Apostolic Church. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Bernice Trogden Mount; three brothers, James L. Mount, Raymond R. Mount and William B. Mount, all of Glenwood, W.Va.; two sisters, Oweva M. Clary of Glenwood, W.Va., and Genevie M. Spurlock of Scottown, Ohio; two sons, William P. Mount of Glenwood and James W. Mount and wife Carolyn of Milton; one daughter, Dianna E. Genhardt and husband Dwight; and six grandchildren, Jonathan W. Mount, Jayme M. Mount, Heather D. Mount, Skylar M. Conrad, Timothy D. Gebhardt and Stacey F. Gebhardt. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mary's Hospital for the special care provided.
Charles R. Smith
Charles R. Smith, 81, of Huntington, widower of Maxine Roberts Smith, passed away Friday, January 5, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital. Memorial graveside services were conducted Sunday, January 14, 2001, at Bicker Cemetery, Barker's Ridge, Milton W.Va., with the Rev. Jerry Ryder officiating. At the time of his death, he resided at Regency Park Assisted Center, Huntington, W.Va. He was born November 19, 1919, at Milton, W.Va, a son of the late Minnie Rose Smith and G.W. Smith. He was retired from The International Nickel Company, with over 38 years of service, and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy, primarily in the Pacific area. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Hope Rutherford; and a daughter-in-law, Carilon Sue Smith. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth N. Smith and his wife Joyce Suiter Smith of Glenwood, W.Va., and Robert W. Smith of Huntington; four grandchildren DuWayne K. Smith and his wife Angelia of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Felicia G. Robey and her husband Charles W. Robey Jr. of Leonardtown, Md., Nicholas C. Smith of Lesage, W.Va, and W. Todd Smith and his wife Angela of Lesage, W.Va.; and eight great-grandchildren, Taylor and Rachel Smith, Christopher and Maria Robey, and Nicholas “Dru” and Aris Smith, Augustus “Gus” and Sandra Smith. He also leaves behind a cousin and his wife, who were special friends, Dewey and JoAnn Jordan of Milton, W.Va., and friends, H.D. “Skip” Cory of Barboursville and Betty Petrie of Huntington. James R. Cottrill Jr.
James R. Cottrill Jr., 58, of Poca died January 9, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
He was a production superintendent for AEP at the John Amos Plant, owner of 52 Racing Team, and a member of Masonic Lodge 170, Nitro.
Surviving: wife, Jeannie Cottrill; sons, David Allen and James Charles, both of Poca; two grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, January 12, 2001, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Doyle Smith officiating. Burial with Masonic rites by Lodge 170 was in Beale Chapel Cemetery, Mason County.
Walter Hensley Jr.
Walter Hensley Jr., 72, of Bancroft, formerly of Kanawha County and Marion, South Carolina; died January 10, 2001, at home after a long illness.
He was retired from FMC and was a Navy veteran.
Surviving: wife, Freda M. Hensley; daighter, Diana of St. Albans; sons, David of Winfield, Dennis of Minneapolis and richard of Denver; brother, Donald of Edgewater, Florida; six grandchildren.
There was no service. Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.
Eleanore E. Evers
Eleanore Elizabeth Evers, 83, of Winfield died January 8, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
She was a judge for the American Kennel Club.
Surviving: daughter, Judy Tschacher of Eagle, Idaho; son, James Louis “Red” of Buffalo; grandchildren, James Louis Evers Jr. of Winfield, Angela Boggess of Midway, Kendall Tschacher and Krystin Leonhardt, both of Sacramento, California.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Burial was in Teays Valley Memorial Gardens, Winfield. Chapman-Erskine Funeral Home, Winfield, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be sent to Putnam County Animal Relief Shelter, 1 Sabre Road, Winfield WV 25213.
