She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Surviving: husband, Edward Arthur Gadd; sons, Scott Estes of Scott Depot, Ricky and Jerry Estes, both of Hurricane; sisters, Betty Lou Perkins and Jessie Burdette, both of Hurricane; brother, Jack Lovejoy of Anaheim, California; seven grandchildren.

Lucy C. Warner, 95, of Poca died January 3, 2001, in Candlelight Cottage Care Home, St. Albans.
She was a homemaker and a member of Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church, Charleston.
Surviving: brother, James Caruthers of Poca; sister, Hester Caruthers of Poca; grandchildren, David R. Bradley and Gail Lynn Bradley, both of South Charleston; two great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, January 5, 2001, at the Cunningham Memorial Park Lower Mausoleum Chapel, St. Albans, with the Rev. Rick McGuire officiating. Burial was in the memorial park. Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.

Robert P. “Corky” “Scutter” Ball, 58, of Hurricane died January 5, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He was an employee of Adventis Corp., Institute Plant, with 31 years’ service. He was a member of the VFW, the Moose and the American Legion and an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.
Surviving: wife, Kathryn Ann Patton Ball; daughters, Leigh Anne Cutlip of Hurricane and Cheryl Lynne Aeberli of Marietta, Ohio; son, Robert Patton Ball of Huntington; mother and stepfather, Betty Jean and Leo Womack of Barboursville; stepmother, Irene Ball of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; sisters, Rebecca Oxley of Hurricane and Elizabeth Ball of Huntington; brother, Richard Ball of Cross Lanes; stepsisters, Jan Baker of Maryland and Nancy Guenthner of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren.

Paul W. Wood, 76, of Winfield, formerly of Cross Lanes, died January 4, 2001, in Teays Valley Center after a long illness.
He was a retired communications worker from C&P Telephone. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 159, Dunbar, Beni Kedem Shrine, Charleston, and VFW, Sissonville. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving: sons, Paul G. of Arnold, Maryland and Keith A. of Winfield; brother, Luther of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; three grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, January 7, 2001, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with the Rev. John T. Hayes officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens. Bob M. Hoffman
Bob M. Hoffman, 70, of Hurricane died January 5, 2001, at home of cancer.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Hurricane, and a self-employed general contractor with B.M. Hoffman Contractors. He was a former commissioner of the Teays Valley Water Co. He was a member of several civic organizations and a graduate of Elkins High School and Morris Harvey College. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving: wife, Ramona Massey Hoffman; daughter, Terri Brumfield Meadows of Hurricane; sister, Emma Lea Landers of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; brothers, Lowell M. Hoffman of St. Albans and Harry E. Hoffman of Pinch; two grandchildren.
Service was held Monday, January 8, 2001, at First Baptist Church, Hurricane, with the Rev. Charles Hendricks and Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Glen W. Rehe
Glen W. “Butch” Rehe, 51, of Winfield died January 5, 2001, in Cleveland Clinic after a short illness.
He was an accountant for Welding Inc., a member of Dunbar Church of Christ and was an Air National Guard veteran.
Surviving: wife, Teresa B. Rehe; daughters, Lacy Jean Rehe and Lindsay Elizabeth Rehe, both at home; mother, Mary Rehe Conley of Dunbar; sisters, Donna Smith of Dunbar and Carol Fields of Hurricane.
Service was held Tuesday, January 9, 2001, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with minister Donnie Chapman officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Mola Margaret Tyree Holderby
Mola Margaret Tyree Holderby, 94, of Huntington, widow of Henry S. Tyree and of Loren Holderby, passed away Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000 in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility, Ashland, Ky. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 27, 2000 at Beard Mortuary with the Rev. W. Keith Creasey officiating. Burial in Highland Memory Gardens, South Point, Ohio. She was born July 4, 1906 in Putnam County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Joe and Roma Smallridge Manning. She is also preceded in death by two sisters, Jewell Sergent and Clara Finley and one brother, Owen Manning. Mrs. Holderby was a member of the Beverly Hills Baptist Church. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Karl and Jane Tyree of Chesapeake, Ohio; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ivan and Audrie Manning of Culloden and Wilford and Verbie Manning of Milton. Two grandchildren Karla Jane Viglianco and husband John of South Point, Ohio, Margaret Ellen Hunt and husband Andy of Chesapeake, Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Leslie S. Singer and Jason Singer; one stepson, David and his wife Pat Holderby of Columbus, Ohio; and many loving nieces and nephews. Beard Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

George L. Lansdale, Jr.
George L. Lansdale, Jr., 75, of Huntington, died Saturday, December 23, 2000 in St. Mary’s Hospital. A mass of Christian burial was held Wednesday, December 27, 2000 at St. Stephens Catholic Church, Ona, with Father Bert Valdez officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Feb. 22, 1925 in Washington, D.C., a son of the late George Leroy Lansdale and Irene Wade Lansdale. He graduated from Gonzaga High School, Washington, D.C., and St. Mary’s College, Emmittsburg, Md. He was retired from advertising and marketing after 26 years at Huntington Alloys. He attended St. Stephens Catholic Church, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Korea Medical Corp. stationed in Japan, and was a member of the Huntington Kiwanis Club, served on the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army, was on the Finance Committee for St. Stephens Catholic Church and was a member of the Quarter Century Club at Huntington Alloys. He was known for his joy and enthusiasm for friends, family and community service. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Mobley Lansdale, three sons and a daughter-in-law, Christopher and Susan Lansdale of Hurricane, Michael Lansdale of Scott Depot and David Lansdale of Huntington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Henry Lenz of Woodland Park, Colo., and Laura and John Hardesty of London, Ohio; a stepmother, Stella Lansdale of Rockville, Md.; four grandchildren, Amanda Lenz, Lissa and Christine Lansdale and Madison Hardesty; and two step-grandchildren, Brianna and Rick Barnett. Contributions may be made to St. Stephens Catholic Church, Hospice of Huntington or Salvation Army. Hensons Mortuary, Pea Ridge. A Christian wake service was held on Tuesday, December 26, 2000.

Evelyn Coffman Adkins
Evelyn Coffman Adkins, 93, of Salt Rock, passed away Friday, Dec. 22, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Salt Rock United Methodist Church by Pastor David Cartwright. Burial in Gill Cemetery. She was born April 27, 1907, in Salt Rock, a daughter of the late Ella Johnston Gill Coffman and Albert Jenkins Coffman. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Myrtle Ellen Adkins Richardson; one son, Jerry Lynn Adkins; and three brothers, Otho Coffman, Carl Coffman and James Coffman. She was retired from Cabell County Board of Education after 45 years of teaching. She taught at Lincoln Elementary, Ona Elementary and Salt Rock Elementary. She was a member of Salt Rock United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, Eron “Jerry” Adkins; one son, James Phillip Adkins and his wife Debi; a daughter-in-law, Bette Notter Adkins Hammer; a son-in-law, Billy Jack Richardson; three sisters, Sadie Coffman Casey, Gertrude Coffman Stone and Sarah Ellen Coffman Perry; grandchildren Andrew and Melodie Adkins, Marcia Adkins Lytton and Richard Lytton, Melissa Adkins, Miriam Adkins, Lenora Richardson, Eron Richardson, Billy Richardson, Nathan and Lisa Richardson, Dawn Adkins Brown, Christopher Adkins, Patrick and Julie Adkins, Marc and Sarah Gamerman; great-grandchildren, Travis Lytton, Adam Lytton, Meredith Lytton, Ashley Richardson, Justin Richardson, Brandi Richardson, Matthew Richardson, Tommy Brown, Austin Adkins, Ashley and Justin Stutler and Max Gamerman. Pauline Mae Nicholson, 80, of Milton, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Bob Norman and Pastor Tracy Mills officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born Nov. 2, 1920, Milton, W.Va., a daughter of the late Noble and Lula May Conner Neal. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Orvie L. Nicholson Sr., who passed away on Oct. 16, 1993; brothers, Noble Neal Jr. and Berman Neal; and her sister, Bernice Bledsoe. She was a retired cook for Milton Elementary School. She was a member of Union Baptist Church, Milton. She is survived by one daughter, Lula Nicholson Bowling of Pikeville, Ky.; one son, Orvie L. Nicholson Jr. of South Charleston; three sisters, Florence Ball of Milton, Emaline Williamson of Ona and Eunice Fetty of Rural Hall, N.C.; one granddaughter, Marsha Nicholson; and one step-grandson, Ronnie Bowling. Tim Yates officiating. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. She was born January 4, 1915, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Maywood and Clara Turner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Noah R. Wellman; a sister, Helen Sabin; and three brothers, Willis Maywood “Jud” and James “Skip” Turner. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda L. and James Halley of Barboursville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert M. and Sonya Webb of Connersville, Ind., and Thomas M. and Bruna Webb of Huntington and Charles D. and Faye Webb of Huntington;12 grandchildren, including her two special grandchildren Debbie Bennett and Doug Harvey, Jennifer Morris, Jeff Webb, John Webb, Julia Diab, Nina Toole, Eda Lenhart, Chris Webb, Joni Byus, Cathi Collins and Charles Webb Jr.; 22 great-grandchildren and a sister, Anne Baugher of, Princeton, W.Va.

Birdie A. Damron McMellon
Birdie A. Damron McMellon, 81, of Culloden, formerly of Yawkey, died Monday, December 25, 2000 in CAMC Memorial Division, Charleston. She was a retired Yawkey Postmaster. Survivors include one son, Darrell McMellon of Yawkey; and one granddaughter and caregiver, Dawna Allen of Yawkey. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 28, 2000 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek; burial in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.

Edward H. Johnson
Edward H. Johnson, 71, of Huntington, passed away December 25, 2000, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, December 28, 2000, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Lawrence Dailey and the Rev. Mark Finley. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born March 21, 1929, in Milton a son of the late Homer E. and Ellie D. Finley Johnson. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Opal Johnson Dailey. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict; a member of the Minerva Lodge #13, AF&AM, Barboursville for 35 years; and a retired supervisor from BASF Corp., Huntington. He is survived by his wife, Roselee Adkins Johnson; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra and Robert Sargent of Huntington and Diana White of Barboursville; five grandchildren, Misty Grass and her husband Troy of Milton, Melanie McSweeney and her husband Keith, Tommy White and Christina White of Barboursville, and Amanda Morris and her husband Hank of Milton; three great-grandchildren, Bodie and Tye Grass of Milton and Brady McSweeney of Barboursville; four brothers, Bobby Johnson of Virginia, Herman Johnson of Milton, Romie Johnson of West Hamlin and Jerry Johnson of Ashton; and two sisters, Lillian Dailey of Milton and Anna Jewel Beardin of Illinois. Roy Wllllam Greathouse
Roy William Greathouse, 86, of Lesage, formerly of Glenwood, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 27, 2000, in St. Mary’s Hospital were conducted Saturday, December 30, 2000, at Heck Home, Milton, with the Rev. Gilbert Smith Jr. and the Rev. Ronnie Long officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Roy was born December 27, 1914, in Clay County, WV, a son of the late Rufus Albert and Nancy Jane Lambert Greathouse. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Verna Bell Blake Greathouse, who went home to be with the Lord on August 25, 2000. He was also preceded by four sisters, Gay Patterson, Amy Brumfield, Stella Holley and Tillie Holley. He was a member of Fairfield Methodist Church, Glenwood. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was also a member of the VFW Post 1064 Huntington. He is survived by two sons and spouses, Rufus and Landora Greathouse of Glenwood and Dallas and Maxine Greathouse of Lesage; one daughter and spouse, Alice and George Spurlock Jr. of Glenwood; one sister, Thelma Greathouse of Huntington; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special caregivers, George, Willa and Sherri Massie.

Millie “Dinki” Peyton
Millie “Dinki” Peyton, 88 of Barboursville, passed away December 27, 2000, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 30, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Richard Black. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born February 19, 1912, in Roach, WV, a daughter of the late Nim and Georgia Workman Farley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edley Peyton; one sister, Lillith “Tuffy” Collins; and two brothers, Clint “Shag” Farley and Omer “Red” Farley. She is survived by one son, Eddie “Red” Peyton of Barboursville; one sister, Inez Gardner of Lufkin, Texas; one special “daughter,” Lavonnia “Beck” Simpson of Barboursville; and many loving friends.

Mildred Graham
Mildred Graham, 93, of Hurricane died December 22, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a retired schoolteacher and a member of and organist at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving: sister, Elizabeth Tucker of Williamsburg, Virginia; grandsons, David Graham of Herndon, Virginia and Gregory Graham of Charles Town.
Service was held Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Hogan officiating. Burial was in Hurricane Cemetery. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church Organ Fund, Hurricane.

Eddie B. Richardson
Eddie Braxton Richardson, 75, of Poca died December 22, 2000, at home after a long illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and a Protestant. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Laborers union.
Surviving: sons, Charleston of Poca and Timothy of Tornado; brother, Billy M. of Ohio; seven grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, December 23, 2000, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Red House, with the Rev. Kenneth L. Roberts officiating. Burial was in the memorial gardens. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

James M. Amory
James Michael Amory, 73, of Scott Depot died December 22, 2000, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a long illness.
He was retired from the National Associationg of Legal Investigators.
Surviving: wife, Adalene; sons, Michael of Vienna and Jerry of Fraziers Bottom; stepchildren, Shirley Lewis, Bennie Maxwell, Rose McCormick and Wanda Donald, all of Hurricane, Henry Maxwell and Donna Briscoe, both of Scott Depot, and Charlotte Hicks of Dayton, Ohio; sisters, Beverly Edens of Florida and Kay Taylor of Nitro; brother, Frank Prowse of Texas; five grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Service was held December 27, 2000, at Hurricane Church of Christ. Burial was in Buddy Thompson family Cemetery, Fort Gay. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Augusta Fisher
Augusta Coleman Fisher, 90, of Liberty died December 22, 2000, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and attended Emma Chapel United Methodist Church, Liberty, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and former treasurer of the Emma Chapel Women’s Society.
Surviving: sons, Windell Ferrell Fisher of Columbus, Ohio, Lynden Varrell Fisher of Red House, and L. Dale Fisher of Cincinnati; daughter, V. Maxine Warner of Cross Lanes; sisters, Liddie Boggess and Flora Funk, both of Kenna; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at Emma Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hubert Groves officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. She was a homemaker, member of Judson Baptist Church, Winfield, and a 70-year resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: daughter, Kathleen Pabst of Woodland Hills, California; sons, Harold of Scott Depot, James of Winfield and Jack of Danville, Virginia; 12 grandchildren;20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

Merlen L. Thomas
Merlen L. “Mert” Thomas, 47, of Scott Depot died December 22, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.
He was a disabled worker from Yale Material Handling of West Virginia, and a mechanic.
Surviving: wife, Diana Thomas; son, Waylon W. Thomas, at home; brother, Walter “Ray” Thomas of Scott Depot; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Jeff Arthur officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Memorial donations may be to a charity of choice.

Sarah Steele
Sarah Steele, 101, of Hurricane, formerly of Little Birch, died December 24, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of the Church of God.
Surviving: grandsons, Richard and James Hamrick, both of Jane Lew, and Carl Hammons of Hurricane; granddaughter, Sharon Hamrick of Jane Lew.
Graveside service was held Wednesday, December 27, 2000, in Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway, with the Rev. Nancy Cale officiating. Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home, Flatwoods, was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn H. Cummings
Carolyn Henson Cummings, 69, of Winfield, formerly of East Bank, died December 27, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a retired dental hygienist from Kanawha County schools with 28 years’ service, a member of Winfield Baptist Church and a graduate of West Liberty State and West Virginia State colleges. She was secretary to the state Dental Hygienist Association and served three terms on the East Bank Town Council and three terms on the Winfield Town Council. She was a member of Eastern Star, Chelyan.
Surviving: husband, Thomas James Cummings; daughter, Betty Ann Walker of Charleston; sons, Thomas J., Jr. of Winfield and Michael R. of California; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, December 29, 2000, at Winfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug McComas and the Rev. Max Perrow officiating. Entombment was in Winfield Cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Putnam County Animal Relief Shelter, 1 Sabre Road, Winfield WV 25213.

Charlotte L. Hull
Charlotte Louise Martin Hull of Buffalo died December 28, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hull.
She was a Christian, a member of the Buffalo Historical Society, a lifelong resident of Buffalo and a graduate of Buffalo High School.
Surviving: daughters, Sharon Painter and Doris Williams, both of Buffalo; son, Robert Hull of Buffalo; sisters, Edna Stanley and Audrey Warner, both of Buffalo; brother, Herman Martin of Buffalo; grandsons, Matthew Painter and Steve Williams, both of Buffalo; granddaughter, Susan Painter of Buffalo; great-granddaughter, Madison Wagner of Buffalo.
