Golda Ann Powell
Golda Ann Powell, 88, of Hurricane died January 29, 2001, after a long illness
She was born in Southside and grew up in Pt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.G. (George) Powell and a grandson, James William Powell. After she and her husband married, they lived in McKees Rocks PA, Hinton WV, Morgantown, and for the least 25 years in Hurricane.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Hurricane.
Survivng: children, Skip Powell, Nancy Haines and Betsy Henson; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, February 1, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial was in Beverly Hills Cemetery, Morgantown. The family suggests memorial donations be sent to First Baptist Church of Hurricane Building Fund, the American Heart Association or a charity of choice.
Velma S. Pickens
Velma S. Pickens of Scott Depot died January 29, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a retired Putnam County schoolteacher with 47 years’ service and a member of Peoples Baptist Church, Scott Depot, and the American Rose Society. She was a graduate of Morris Harvey College and received a master’s degree in education from Marshall University.
Surviving: daughters, Sharon L. Conley of Hopkinsville, Kentucky and Joan P. Lea of Westerville, Ohio; sister, Mabel Radcliff of Akron, Ohio; brothers, Harry Salisbury of Hot Springs, Arkansas and Norvell Salisbury of Ocala, Florida; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, February 1, 2001, at Peoples Baptist Church with the Rev. Peter Faulkner officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorial donations be sent to Peoples Baptist Church, 118 Poplar Fork Road, Scott Depot WV 25560.
Paula K. Young
Paula K. Farley Young, 21, of Poca, formerly of Nitro and St. Albans, died January 30, 2001, in an automobile accident in Mason County.
She was a sign language interpreter at Point Pleasant High School, a Mary Kay consultant and a member and Sunday school teacher at Landmark Church of God, Nitro. She was a native of Huntington and attended Fairmont State College.
Surviving: husband, David A. Young III; parents, Paul H. and Sally C. Farley of Nitro; maternal grandparents, Jack and Corabel Cook of Midland, Michigan; paternal grandparents, Paul R. and Sally Farley of Huntington; maternal great-grandmother, Ruby Morr of Orlando, Florida; sisters, Beth Toppins and Renee Farley, both of Huntington; one nephew, one niece.
Service was held Friday, February 2, 2001, at Landmark Church of God with Pastor David E. Wall and Pastor David Gifffis officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, was in charge of arrangements.
Hillard P. McCallister
Hillard P. McCallister, 83, of Scott Depot died February 1, 2001, in Teays Valley Nursing Center of leukemia.
He was a retired Putnam County school bus driver with 25 years’ service, attended Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene, was an Army veteran of World War II and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: daughter, Cheryl Halstead of Hurricane; son, Bobby of Winfield; stepdaughter, Barbara Rooper of Hurricane; stepson, Ronnie Davis of Hurricane; sister, Faye Smith of Hurricane; brother, Orel of Hurricane; three grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild.
Service was held Saturday, February 3, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Charles V. Williams officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.
Eva Phillips
Eva Wright Patrick Phillips, 80, of Robertsburg died February 1, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was a Baptist, a graduate of Logan High School and retired head of transportation at the Naval Staton in Key West, Florida.
Surviving: daughter, Jackie Patrick Thaxton of Robertsburg; son, Leonard “Corky” of Robertsburg; sister, Jacque Fernandez of Red House; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, February 3, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Denver Tucker officiating. Burial was in Wright’s Cemetery, Buffalo.
Virginia D. Wiggins
Virginia D. Wiggins, 64, of Scott Depot died January 31, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving: husband, Norman K. Wiggins; daughter, Sekela G. Wiggins of Hurricane; sisters, Alepha Parker of Byron, Michigan, Jearline Runyon of Warren, Michigan, Edith Christine Frasher of Culloden, and Dorothy Anderson of Winfield; brother, Raymond Johnson of Weidman, Michigan; two grandchildren.
Private family graveside service was held in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
James Lee Yates
James Lee Yates, 78, of Poca died February 3, 2001, in CAMC, Memorial Division, after a long illness.
He was a member of Rock Branch Independent Church, Nitro, where he was a former member of the choir. He was former owner of West Virginia Truck Stops, Inc., an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, member of VFW Post 10842, Poca, and Nitro Masonic Lodge 1070. He was a state champion trap shooter from 1969 to 1972 and in 1987, and was a past member of Amateur Trap Shooters Association and Pacific International Trap Shooters Association.
Surviving: wife, Garnett Hoffman Yates; sons, James T. of Poca and Jerry D. of Sissonville; sister, Betty Yates Deem of Eleanor; brother, Robert “Hoot” of Fairplain; three grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at Rock Branch Independent Church with Pastor Delbert Hawley and Pastor James Davis officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
John A. Higginbotham
John A. Higginbotham, 49, of Culloden died January 20, 2001, at home.
He attended Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church and was retired from the West Virginia Division of Highways.
Surviving: daughters, Cari Lea of Cross Lanes, Sara of Hurricane, Jennifer, Johnna and Patty; son, Neuben; sisters, Myrtle Leach of Lewisburg, Marjorie Litton of Hurricane, and Helen Walz of Milton; brother, Ray of Charleston; five grandchildren.

Opal G. Caldwell
Opal Glenna Caldwell, 87, of Hurricane died January 24, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was a member of Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: daughter, Lois Gail Fisher of Hurricane; sons, the Rev. Paul Caldwell of Columbus, Ohio and James Harold Caldwell of Hurricane; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Bonnie Marie Martin
Bonnie Marie Deweese Martin, 85, of Buffalo died January 23, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a homemaker, a Christian and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: daughter, Betty Jean Martin Null of Buffalo; sister, Iva Allen of Washington Court House, Ohio; brother, Owen Deweese of Hometown.

C. Julia Wright, 94, of Eleanor died January 23, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a Christian, a homemaker, and a lifelong resident of Putnam County. She had attended Notre Dame School of Music, Cincinnati, and was a member of the Kanawha Valley Homemakers Club.
Surviving: stepdaughter, Phyllis A. McClure of Princeton; stepsons, Donald A. Wright of Winfield and Louie L. Wright of Midway.

Harold A. Martin Sr.
Harold A. Martin Sr., 84, of Hurricane died January 24, 2001, at home after a short illness.
He was a retired analytical chemist from FMC Corp., South Charleston, with 30 years’ service. He was a member of Winfield Lions Club, a former Boy Scout leader, an Army veteran of World War II, a Christian and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: daughters, Ann McCormick and Louise Kerwood, both of Teays Valley, and Rebecca Martin of Scott Depot; sons, Harold A. “Corky” Martin Jr. of Culloden, C.W. and Pat Powell, both of Hurricane; sister, Elsie Chaney of Culloden; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Druzella J. King
Druzella J. King, 94, of Nitro died January 25, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of Nitro United Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Jay Devore, 66, of Wilmington, North Carolina, formerly of Fraziers Bottom, died January 23, 2001, after a long illness.
He was a Christian and retired manager of Newworth Motors in Wilmington.

Harry F. Lett, 84, of Poca died January 19, 2001, in SunBridge of Putnam Nursing Center after a long illness.
He was retired from American Electric Power and was a member of VFW Post 10842.
Surviving: daughter, Arlene Watkins; sister, Ada Terry; grandsons, Kerry of Buffalo and Andre of Dent, Ohio.

Beulah M. Thornton
Beulah May Harper Thornton, 65, of Liberty died January 25, 2001, in CAMC Memorial Division, after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Liberty and a Baptist.
