Mary Ann Brumbaugh, 80, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Buffalo, West Virginia, died March 14, 2001 at Dodrill’s Home Care Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Frank and Binnie Raynes of Buffalo, and her husband, Merideth E. Brumbaugh.
She was a graduate of West Virginia Insitutue of Technology, Montogomery, and retired from Defense Construction Supply Center after forty years of service.
Surviving: sisters, Jessie Mallett of Buffalo and Helen Burdette of Clearwater, Florida; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Schoedinger Funeral Home, Columbus, with the Rev. Lloyd Markley officiating. Burial was in Fountain Square Cemetery, Fostoria, Ohio.

Paul E. Lane Sr.
Paul E. Lane Sr., 61, of Poca died March 19, 2001, in CAMC Memorial Division of kidney disease.
He was born April 15, 1939, son of the late Charles and Ruby Lane. He was a laborer and a Christian.
Surviving: wife, Wanda Kelley Lane; sons, Paul E. Lane Jr. of Madison Heights, Virginia and Thomas S. Lane of Poca; brother, Junior Lane of Poca; sister, Alice McClanahan of Cross Lanes; grandchildren, Jessica, Michael and Jamie Lane.
Service was held Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with the Rev. David Patrick and the Rev. O.R. Gunno officiating. Burial was in the Lane family Cemetery, Poca.

Alma K. Higginbotham
Alma K. Buck Higginbotham, 79, of Buffalo died March 22, 2001, at home following a long illness.
She was a homemaker, attended the Buffalo Church of the Nazarene, and Ladies Aid.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ezra Higginbotham; son,, Charles Ezra Higginbotham; brothers, Millard “Dallas” Buck and James Buck; and sister, Leoda “Ruth” Null.
Surviving: daughter, Anna “Cricket” Higginbotham Workman of Grimms Landing; son, Gary L. Higginbotham of Buffalo; sister, Louise McCoy of Buffalo; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Sidney Warner officiating. Burial was in Tucker Cemetery, Grimms Landing.

Lillie Hobbs
Lillie Hobbs, 84, of Huntington went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 24, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 26, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, by the Rev. Russell Gue. Burial in Green Valley Cemetery. She was born April 5, 1916, in Wayne County, a daughter of the late Henry and Gertrude Wroten Adkins. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Boyd Lambert; her second husband, Denford Bias; two granddaughters, Brenda Fulks and Sherry Culkar; two brothers and two sisters. She was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Hobbs; five daughters, Norma Lovejoy and her husband, Maxwell, of Chesapeake, Ohio, Violet Stover and her husband, Robert, of Huntington, Delores Gilkerson and her husband, Ray, of Salt Rock, Fern Breedlove of Huntington, and Barbara Prater and her husband, Wesley, of Ypsilanti, Mich.; one son, Norman Lambert and his wife, Dreama, of Logan, W.Va.; one sister, Lottie Messinger of Branchland; one brother, Edison Adkins of Proctorville, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Shirley Sherk of Huntington; two stepsons, Roger and Eugene Hobbs of Texas; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Austin Adkins, 87, of South Point, Ohio, went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 24, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at the Bethlehem United Baptist Church, by the Rev. Vernon Perry and Rev. Ray Adkins. Burial in Morrison Cemetery. He was born February 1, 1914 in Cabell County, a son of the late Gilbert and Alberta Adkins. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Genevieve Adkins; one son, Bobby Adkins; and one baby daughter, Iris June Adkins. He was a member of Bethlehem United Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Anna E. Wheeler Adkins; six daughters, Aretta Adkins of Palm Coast Fla., Roberta Hylton of Dawson, Ga, Marsha Webb of Palm Coast, Fla., Janice Brust of Moline, Ill., Diane Smit of Goodyear, Ariz., and Deborah Pointer of South Point, Ohio; three sons, Jerry Adkins of Burleson, Texas, Roger Adkins of Huntington, and Danny Adkins of Richland Hills, Texas; three stepchildren, John Brammer of Raleigh, N.C., Becky Blankenship of Wendell, N.C., and Jane Brammer of Morristown, Tenn.; six sisters, Virginia Adkins of Branchland, Carrie Pratt of Huntington, Evelyn Ramey of Athalia Ohio, Lola Turley of Mason, W.Va., Patricia Bowen of Richmond Hills, Ga., and Elizabeth Hadley of Swansea, Ill.; one brother, Cecil Adkins of Pacific, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Thomas Jefferson Rutherford
Thomas Jefferson Rutherford, 91, of Branchland, formerly of Guyandotte, W.Va, passed away Friday, March 23, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 25, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Ray Vance. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born February 21, 1910, in Lincoln County, a son of the late George and Nellie Payne Rutherford. He was retired from the Laborer’s Local #519, Huntington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Jane Stapleton Rutherford. He is survived by three daughters, Margaret Leffingwell of Ceredo, W.Va, Freda Gail Adkins of Branchland, W.Va., and Virginia Morrison of Dunnellon, Fla.; one son, Fred Rutherford of Proctorville, Ohio; one brother, Lonnie Rutherford of Huntington; 14 grandchildren; 29 greatgranchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Paul H. Chapman
Paul H. Chapman, 79, of Salt Rock, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Jody Lucas. Special singing will be provided by Lesley Lucas and Tim Chapman. Burial in Enon Cemetery. He was born November 9, 1921, in Cabell County, a son of the late Osle and Maude Bledsoe Chapman. He was a retired employee of B.A.S.F. Corp., Huntington. He was a member of the Valley of Decision Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mavis Dillon Chapman; one daughter and son-in-law, Lora and Chester Morrison of Beaumont, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, Wilford Paul “Butch” and Sharon Chapman of Salt Rock, W.Va.; one sister, Violet Chapman Bledsoe of Salt Rock, W.Va.; three brothers, Osle Chapman Jr. and Raymond Chapman, both of Salt Rock, W.Va., and Odell Chapman of Barboursville, W.Va.; seven grandchildren, Lesley Lucas, Sarah Cooper, Sermin Kinay, Kevin King, Craig King, Rodney King and Jason Morrison; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Gladys Marie Lambert
Gladys Marie Lambert, 74, of Barboursville, loving and giving mother and grandmother, has gone to be with the Lord on March 23, 2001. She was born January 14, 1927, the daughter of the late Lewis and Ida Mae Hysell Chapman. She was preceded in death by her husband, John David Lambert; four stepsons, Robert, Johnny, Willie and Woody Lambert; three stepdaughters, Louise Lusher, Rosa Mae Dillon and Doris Ingles; one daughter, Dixie Mae Lambert; one son, James Edward Lambert; and a friend, Sparky Void Morris. She is survived by one stepson, Albert Allen Lambert and his wife Dottie of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Ruth Ann Laverty of Milton, W.Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Henry David Lambert and Doris of Ona, W.Va., and Lewis Vermont Lambert and Diane of Chesapeake, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; good Samaritans Mike Lusher, Raymond and Georgie Taylor, and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Henson Mortuary, Pastor Brent Gibson and Richard Black officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Cemetery, Milton. In lieu of flowers, Granny would have preferred that donations be made to the Mud River Baptist Church Buliding and Maintenance Fund.

Emma Faye Gibson
Emma Faye Gibson, 79, of Huntington, passed away Friday, March 23, 2001, at Heritage Center, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Charles Gibson officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Faye was born September 27, 1921, in Hurricane, W.Va., a daughter of the late Roscoe and Inez Wallace Gibson. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Pete, Wayne, Jim and Tuck Gibson; and one sister, Freda Gibson. She was a retired clerk for Chessie System. She is survived by one sister, Marion Fulks of Milton; three brothers, George Gibson of Glenwood, Frye Gibson of Nitro, and Granville Gibson of Parkersburg; one special great-niece, Megan Carr; and a host of family and friends.

Wanda McCallister Tench Allen
Wanda McCallister Tench Allen, 63, of Barboursville, WV, passed away March 20, 2001, in Cabell Huntington Hospital following a long illness. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Greg Jordan. Burial in Enon Cemetery. She was born February 12, 1938, in Barboursville, a daughter of Ruby Bledsoe McCallister of Barboursville, and the late Bruce McCallister. Also surviving are her daughter, Terri L. Tench of Huntington; one sister, Wilma Bland of Proctorville, Ohio; one brother, Robert McCallister of Dayton, Ohio; one very special granddaughter, Cynthia Tench Crager and her husband Doug Crager of South Point, Ohio; two grandsons, C.J. Runyon and Christopher Tench of Huntington, whom she loved very much; and soon to be born, her first great-granddaughter, Madison Crager, which was very dear to her. A day will not go by that she will not be in our hearts.

Sarah F. Qualls Jenkins
Sarah F. Qualls Jenkins, 95, of Route 1, Glenwood, W.Va., died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Christine Cooper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melva Jenkins (1983) and son, Erskin F. Jenkins (1994). Survivors include six sons, Worthy L. Jenkins of Route 1, Glenwood, W.Va., Ervie W. Jenkins of Houston, Texas, Ernest B. Jenkins of Ashland, Ky., Don R. Jenkins of Barboursville, W.Va, Herman A. Jenkins of Denver, Colo., and Hershell P. Jenkins of Barboursville, W.Va.; four daughters, Shirley F. Baldwin of Nitro, W.Va., Dorothy J. Lester of Milton, W.Va., Christine M. Cooper of Milton, W.Va, and Mildred F. Bailey of Cannonsburg, Ky.; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Leonard M. Qualls of Milton W.Va. Sarah was a member of Lawrence Chapel Church, where she attended for 66 years of her 72 years of Christian profession. Services were conducted Saturday, March 24, 2001 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Pastor James Jefferson and Stephen Chapman officiating. Burial in Templeton Cemetery, Route 1, Glenwood.

Eugene T. Dawson
Eugene T. Dawson, 86, of Dahlongea, Ga., formerly of Huntington, died Monday, March 19, 2001, in Gold City Community Living Center, Dahlongea, Ga. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, by the Rev. Gary Stackpole. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born May 2, 1914, in Inez, Ky., son of the Rev. Jacob Harmon and Clemmie Olive Toney Dawson. Mr. Dawson was a retired sales representative of Van Zandt Supply Company, Huntington; a member of Dahlongea United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Julia B. Dawson. Survivors include his wife, Sallie Dawson; three daughters and one son-in-law, Judy and Gary Adams of Dahlongea, Ga., Phyllis Hegwood of Ona, W.Va., and Joetta Casey of Louisville, Ky.; two stepsons and spouses, David and Betsy Wright of Lakeland, Fla., and Jonathan and Ellen Wright of Lewisburg, W.Va.; one stepdaughter and spouse, Janice and Bill Halderson of Dahlongea, Ga.; three sisters, Sue Wyant of Albuquerque, N.M., Mary Love of Princeton, W.Va., and Alma Buswell of Lexington, Ky.; one brother, Layton Dawson of Osprey, Fla.; six grandchildren and spouses, Terry and Charles Calhoun of Louisville, Ky., Scott Stinson of Huntington, W.Va., Tony and Brent Greco of Louisville, Ky., Julie Mackey of Louisville, Ky., Christy and Mark Lockwood of Silverthorn, Colo., and Becky Adams of New York, N.Y.; and eight great-grandchildren, Carley Calhoun, David and Kayla Stinson, Corey and Jacob Greco, James Mickey and Garrett and Alyssa Lockwood.

Alma Lee Forth, 91, of Fraziers Bottom, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Point Pleasant. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Fraziers Bottom with Pastor Robert E. Johnson officiating. Burial in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. She was born May 1, 1909, in Cabell County, W.Va., a daughter of the late George and Rosia Cooper Jenkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Welston Forth; brothers, Henry, Leroy and Woodrow Wilson Jenkins; sister, Susie Barnett. She attended Mount Olive United Methodist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Joann and Donald Sisson of Pliny; one brother, RaIph and Hazel Jenkins of Milton; one granddaughter, Barbara and Rex Nance of Pliny. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Also surviving are one daughter, Lora Morrison of Beaumont, Texas; one son, Wilford Paul “Butch” Chapman of Salt Rock; one sister, Violet Chapman Bledsoe of Salt Rock; and three brothers, Osie Chapman Jr. and Raymond Chapman, both of Salt Rock, and Odell Chapman of Barboursville. Florence “Katie” Black
Florence “Katie” Black, 87, of Barboursville, formerly of Graynson, died Saturday, March 17, 2001. She retired from civil service. Survivors include one sister, Esther Harper of Barboursville. Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at Grayson Memorial Burial Park. Malone Funeral Home, Grayson, was in charge of arrangements.

Mille Queen Swanson
Mille Queen Swanson, 78, of Ona, wife of Dallas Swanson, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, in St Mary’s Hospital. She was a homemaker. Also surviving are one daughter, Naomi Ruth Kyle of Long Beach, Calif.; one brother, Don Queen of Porterville, Calif.; and one sister, Irene Ramey of Harts. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin; burial in Porters Cemetery, Myra.

Gene Tunney Grove
Gene Tunney Grove, 72, of Barboursville, went to be with the Lord March 17, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the Fellowship Baptist Church by Dr. Jerry Warren. Entombment in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. He was born September 7, 1928, in Barboursville, a son of the late Herman Franklin and Eva Dora Walton Grove. He was owner and operator of Chateau Grove Personal Care Home, Barboursville; a graduate of Barboursville High School where he received the Joe Nelson Award for best athlete; a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served during the Korean conflict; a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Gideons International, I.O.O.F. #64, Huntington, Minerva Lodge #13, A.F.&A.M Barboursville, Beni Kedem Temple, Charleston, and Ringside Brothers. He was preceded in death by one son David S. Grove. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy J. Ward Grove; one daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Frank Adkins of Huntington; and two sons and three daughters-in-law, Gene T. and Twilla Grove of Atlanta, Ga., Mark and Annette Grove of Milton and Karen S. Grove of Ona; two sisters, Mahala Flaugher and Loris Jefferson of Barboursville; one sister-in-law, Joan Grove of Barboursville; seven grandchildren, Scott, Shawn Matthew, Nicola, Airen, Bryan and Zachary; and several nieces, nephews and friends. Violet E. Bird
Violet E. Bird, 85, of Hurricane died March 11, 2001, at her son’s home in Hurricane.
She was a member of Indian Fork Primitive Baptist Church, Culloden.
Surviving: son, Dennis Bird of Hurricane; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Willard Bird.
Service was held March 13, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Hurricane.

Mary E. Ferrell, 81, of Hurricane died March 10, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Charles C. Ashworth
Charles Clifford Ashworth, 79, of Hurricane died March 10, 2001, at home after a long illness.
He was a retired insulator for Union Carbide, South Charleston, with 28 years of service and an Army veteran of World War II. He attended First Baptist Church of Hurricane. He was born in Hamlin.
He was a 32nd degree Mason, past master of Putnam Lodge 139, past high priest of Tri-County 51 Royal Arch Masons, past deputy grand master of the 5th Masonic District and a member of Scottish Rite Bodies, Eastern Star Chapter 116, Hurricane, York Rite bodies, International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers Local 598 AFL-CIO, and Greenup Lodge of Traders & Confidence. He was a lifetime member of DAV.
Surviving: wife of 54 years, Loma Fowler Ashworth; son, Jim Ashworth of Charlotte, North Carolina; daughter, Sherry Cook of Madison; grandchildren, J.D. Cook of Madison, Nich and Chelsea Ashworth, both of Charlotte; brothers, B.K. Ashworth, Hurlid Ashworth and James Ashworth, all of South Charleston, Dorsey Ashworth and Okey Ashworth, both of Hurricane, and Ray Ashworth of St. Albans; sister, Zelphia Deitrick of Deer Park, Texas.
Service was held March 14, 2001, at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, with the Rev. Jerry Losh officiating. Burial, with Masonic graveside rites, was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Corss Lanes.

Dorothy Sue Wallace
Dorothy Sue Ellis Wallace, 65, of Hurricane died March 12, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of secretary of First Nazarene Church, Hurricane.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie Wallace, parents, Moss French Ellis Sr. and Mayme Toler Ellis, sisters, Virginia Richards and Evelyn Davies, and brothers, Tabor Ellis, Woods Ellis and Melvin Ellis.
Surviving: brother and sister-in-law, Moss F. and Jeanie Ellis of Barboursville.
Service was held March 14, 2001, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Barboursville. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of the First Church of the Nazarene, Third Street and Dudding Avenue, Hurricane WV 25526.

Janeth “Jenny” Jones, 63, of Hurricane died March 12, 2001, in CAMC General Division after a short illness.
She was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church and attended Camp Creek Gospel Tabernacle and Teays Valley Baptist Church.
She was born in Nellis and lived part-time at the Blackwell Drive Group Home.
Surviving: mother, Elfreda Walker Jones Conely of Hurricane; sister, Carolyn S. Wardwell of the Virgin Islands; two stepsisters; three stepbrothers, uncle, Elwood Walker Jr. of Dayton, Ohio.
Service was held March 15, 2001 at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, with the Rev. Bruce Young officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Etta M. Hickman
Etta M. Hickman, 69, of Pliny died March 12, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington.
Surviving: husband, Harold Hickman.
Service was held March 15, 2001 at Mount Union Methodist Church, Pliny.

Ethel M. Pennington
Ethel May Pennington, 88, of Scottsdale, Arizona died March 10, 2001 in Scottsdale.
She was born in Scott Depot.
Surviving: daughter, Loretta Withrow; sons, Alvin Pennignton, Tom Pennington and Oley Pennington; sisters, Mary Erwin and Eunice Bowles; brothers, George and Thomas Bowles; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Service was held March 15, 2001 at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with Minister George Erwin officiating. Entombment was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

Billy H. Webb
Billy H. Webb, 66, of Hurricane died March 14, 2001, in CAMC Memorial Division after a long illness.
He was a born again Christian and a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, Culloden. He was a salesman, retiring from Harvey Shreve, and was also employed by Tag Galyean Mercedes, Kanawha Porsche and Audi. He was an Army veteran and a 32-year resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: wife, Gail Webb; daughters, Heather Dawn Leggett of Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and Sarita Bennett of Charleston; sisters, Irene Lawrence and Ann Kirk, both of Hernshaw, Kathy Curry and Pauline Farace, both of Hanover, Maryland; brother, Reggie Webb Jr. of Charleston; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

Rita Romaine Byrd Sowards, 62, of Culloden died March 16, 2001 in Putnam General Hospital.
She was a homemaker and a member of Church of God Holiness, Milton.
Surviving: husband, E. Moses Sowards Jr.; sons, James Edward and wife, Leah Saul Sowards, of Yawkey, Duane Lee Sowards and companion, Angel Hossier, of Prichard; daughters, Regina Diane Wallace and husband, Vernon L. Wallace Jr., of Milton, and Lisa Ann Belville of Huntington; mother, Vondena Byrd of Hurricane; two sisters, Ruth Ann Boster and Rosalee Sergent; seven grandchildren; mother-in-law, Ruby Jewell Sowards of Culloden.
Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
