Maya Delaney Sisco, infant daughter of Dwayne M. Sisco and Serinity Vanover of Winfield, died April 13, 2001, in Children’s Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Also surviving: sister, Riley Elizabeth Sisco; grandparents, Joseph & Peggy Sisco of Scott Depot and Michael & Vanessa Goldman of Winfield.

James W. Gillispie
James William “Skip” Gillispie, 43, of St. Albans died April 16, 2001 in Putnam General Hospital of injuries received in an automobile accident on Route 60.
He was an operator having worked for the Operators Union. He spent most of his life in Putnam County.
Surviving: wife, Patricia Louise Spangler Gillispie; sons, Jamie and Joseph, both of Buffalo, and Christopher Tucker of Germany; stepsons, Mark Webster, Michael Webster and Kevin Webster, all of St. Albans; daughter, Tabetha McCoy of Pt. Pleasant; mother, Shirley Wray of Pliny; brothers, Michael Lee Hayes of Fraziers Bottom and Ernest Hayes Jr. of Pliny; sister, Kathy Ann Hayes of Mocksville, North Carolina; four grandchildren.
Service will be held Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, with the Rev. Paul Cogar officiating. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, Harmony.
D Michael Fewell
D. Michael Fewell, 54, of Winfield died April 16, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was a lifelong member of Winfield United Methodist Church and a graduate of Winfield High School where he played on two championship football teams. He attended West Virginia University on a football scholarship. He graduated from WVU Law School and was in private law practice in Putnam County for many years. He also served as assistant prosecutor for Putnam County for several years.
Mr. Fewell was a very active member in all aspects of county and state 4-H, having earned in 2000 the Ruby Clover Award for 30 years of volunteer service to the West Virginia 4-H program. As a 4-H leader, he volunteered on staff for the Older Members Conference and Alpha State Camps for more than 20 years. He was named an Outstanding 4-H Alumni, was inducted into the West Virginia 4-H All Stars and made a positive impact on the lives of thousands os state youth. “Mike gave his heart to the youth of our state and all of us are better for it,” said Jeffrey Orndorff, WVU Extension Service 4-H Program Leader.
Mr. Fewell was very active in Putnam County civic projects and organizations, such as The Salvation Army and the Putnam County Fair Board.
Surviving: wife, Angela Wolfe Fewell; daughter, Annie of Huntington; sons, Mick and Clancy, both at home; brother and sister-in-law, Richard “‘Bud” and Sandra Fewell of Maui, Hawaii; sister and brother-in-law, Beverly “Sparkle” and Carless Turley of Alum Creek; aunts, Margaret “Teady” Cain of Winfield, Delfa Walters of Eleanor, Vivian Shelton of Teays Valley, Sylvia Matthews of Nitro, Helen Matthews of Nitro, and Mary Stetser of Buffalo.

Mrs. Loretta M. Miller, 69, of Scott Depot died April 16, 2001, in Women & Children’s Hospital of ovarian cancer.
She was a lifelong Presbyterian and member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church where she had been very active with the women’s circle. She was a homemaker and a volunteer of Putnam General Hospital.
Surviving: husband, Jack L. Miller; son, Christopher of Utica, New York; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Miller of Scott Depot; grandson Tyson Miller with the U.S. Marine Corps; aunt, Nina of Fort Branch, Indiana; uncle, Eugene Biddle of Terre Haute, Indiana; aunt and uncle, Bertha and Archie Webb of Evansville, Indiana; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Doris Wagner of Merced, California.

Hazel Emily Reed, 83, of Scott Depot died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital of a short illness.
She was retired post master at the Teays Post Office, a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane, a member of the Virgie West Missions Circle, past president of her Sunday school class, and a 45-year resident of Scott Depot.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Reed Sr., and a son, James E. Reed Jr.

Reed, and his wife, Carolyn, of Wheeling; sisters, Phyllis Webster, and her husband, Bob, of St. Albans, and Freeda Maddo,x and her husband, Harold, of Scott Depot; brothers, Homer Womack, and his wife, Frances, of St. Albans, and Jenning Womack, ahd his wife, Eleanor, of Greensburg, PA; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Vance E. Willard, 65, of Hurricane, formerly of Winfield, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at CAMC Memorial Hospital of a long illness.
He was retired from Monsanto Chemical Corp., Nitro. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of Nitro High School, Class of 1953.

Charles L. “Peachie” Powell, Jr
Charles L. “Peachie” Powell, Jr., 73, of Milton passed away Thursday, April 19, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 23, 2001 at Milton United Methodist Church with Rev. Keith Leap officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 139, Milton. He was born January 6, 1928 in Cabell Co., WV a son of the late Charles and Elizabeth Harshbarger Powell, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Irene Bell. He was a retired first class machinist with Union Carbide. He was a member of the Milton United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member and chaplain of both the American Legion, Post 139, Milton and the VFW, Post 9796, Milton. He was a volunteer for the V.A. Medical Center Pharmacy. He was active in Milton Senior Citizens and the Milton Garden Club. He is survived by his wife, G. Jean Miller Powell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Wayne Zeligson of Wellington, FL and Mary and Stephen Frush of Barboursville, WV; mother-in-law, Ollice Miller of Milton; four grandchildren, Jesse Charles Zeligsoti, Kim Sovine and her husband Jeremy, Jamie Warner, and Matthew Chad Warner; one great grandchild, Alyssa Michelle Fazio; host of other family and friends. Burial in Bias Chapel Cemetery, Milton. She was born August 13, 1934, a daughter of the late Hubert L. “Dick” Hughes and Alva Glover Hughes. Mr. Elvin A. Sutphin, 57, of Ona, W.Va., passed away Thursday, April 19, 2001, in St Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Minister Robert Tucker. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. He was born July 20, 1943, in Cabell County, a son of the late Alger and Loto Lo Ena Wetherholt Sutphin. He was a retired employee of Steel of West Virginia, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of the Milton Church of Christ, where he was a song-leader. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lee, Buster, James and Darrell Sutphin. He was the beloved husband of Norma Scarberry Sutphin; beloved father of Darren Sutphin of Ona. Also surviving are two special grandchildren, Brier and Brody; three special children, Wheaton, Annyston and Lindsie; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Veda and Ocle Chapman of Salt Rock and Oma and Clinton Johnson of Milton; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Barbara Sutphin of Ona.

D.W. “Chuck” Bragg, 68, of Summerfield, Fla., formerly of Ona, husband of Gladys Bragg, died Monday, April 16, 2001 at home. He retired from the C&O Railway and was an ordained minister. Also surviving are two daughters, Junia Horton and Anita Logan, both of Florida; three sons, Dennis Bragg and Ralph Bragg, both of Florida, and Michael Brag of Milton and three sisters, Oweda, Ora and Reedy, all of West Virginia. Michael Lee Meadows
Michael Lee Meadows, 36, of Milton went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Guyan Creek Church with the Rev. Gilbert Smith Jr. and the Rev. Don Reynolds officiating. Burial in Pete Meadows Cemetery, Glenwood. He was born in Cabell County, W.Va., on November 28, 1964, a son of Donald and Shirley Meadows. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, the Rev. John Ekers and by his paternal grandparents, Cebulun and Verba Meadows. Mike attended the Guyan Creek Church. He was a craftsman for Blenko Glass, Milton. He loved to fish, hunt and camp. He is deeply loved by his family and will be sadly missed. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving wife of nine years, Vonda Spurlock Meadows, whom he married on August 3, 1991; grandmother, Nettie Ekers of Iverness, Fla.; step-grandmother, Ruby Meadows of Milton; father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Alice Spurlock Jr. of Glenwood; and a host of family and friends.

Mrs. Flarnia Endicott Nida, 91, of Salt Rock, went to be with the Lord April 19, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Sharon Bailey. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Mount Calvary Church by Pastors Joe Dolen and Ronnie Eplin. Burial in Nida Cemetery, Salt Rock. She was born May 7, 1909, in Martin County, Ky, a daughter of the late Ezekiel and Sarah Dillon Endicott. She was a member of Mount Calvary Church at Salt Rock. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leonard “Ben” Nida; two children, Marion Nida and Arlene Nida Lucas; one sister, Elda Kirk and four brothers Walter Endicott, Theron Endicott, Ernest Endicott and Sherman Endicott. She is survived by two sisters, Sharon Nida Bailey of Salt Rock and Mary Nida Carey of North Carolina; one son, Leonard E. Nida and Greg Nida, a grandchild she raised, both of Salt Rock; three grandchildren who helped take care of her during her long illness, Justin and Ronica Bailey, and Angela Bailey Porter, all of Salt Rock; 15 other grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosie Evans of Columbus, Ohio, and Mary Frasher of Fort Gay, W.Va.; one brother, Emer Endicott of Louisa, Ky.; and a host of other family and friends. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He was also a member of the Tabernacle of Praise. Margorie A. Cox, 80, of Hurricane, formerly of Reedy, died April 9, 2001, at her home after a brief illness.
She was born May 14, 1920 in Reedy, the daughter of the late Hoyt and Ottie Board Lowe. She was a wife, mother and homemaker, and attended the Forest Burdette Methodist Church, Hurricane. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis F. Cox, in 1983.
Surviving: sons, Jeffrey Dean Cox and Dennis James Cox, both of Hurricane.
Service was held Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Charles S. Thompson officiating. Burial was in Droddy-Canterbury Cemetery, Walton.

Jennings Duane Cox, 71, of Hurricane died April 11, 2001, in the VA Hospital in Huntington.
He was a retired O.T.R. Driver-Instructor with over 25 years of safety awarded professional truck driving. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Joyce Taylor Wroczynski, 47, of Scott Depot was killed April 8, 2001, at her home.
She was a fourth grade teacher at Poca Elementary School, a former teacher at Conner Street Elementary, Hurricane, and performed various special assignments for the West Virginia Board of Education. She was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane, and a graduate of Winfield High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Anderson College, Anderson, Indiana, and her master’s degree from Marshall University, Huntington.
Surviving: son, Steven Wroczynski, a student at Shepherd College, Shepherdstown; daughter, Crystal, a student Berea College, Berea, Kentucky; parents, Ross and Clarice Briscoe Taylor of Scott Depot; brother, Dr. Rod Taylor of Scott Depot; along with many friends and relatives.

He owned and operated Stone’s Flower City. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he was a Lt. and served during WWII on the Destroyer USS Owen. He is survived by his wife, Margaret M. She was born Dec. 30, 1914 in Lincoln County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Florence Sergent Bowles. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Herman Boster. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Trace Fork Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Ric Richter of Tamarac, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, B. G. and Carolyn Boster II and T. J. and Ruth Ann Boster, all of Hurricane; one half sister, Doris Ann Campbell of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and special caregiver, Nola Templeton.
Robert L. “Bob” Bills
Robert L. “Bob” Bills, 66, of Barboursville, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, April 14, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at the Gethsemane United Baptist Church, by Rev. Sherwood Thompson and Rev. Robert Burns. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. He was born November 14, 1934 in Lincoln County, a son of the late Rev. Walden E. and Naoma Neace Bills. He was a retired employee of INCO. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and served from 1954-1957. He was a former member and a deacon of the Bethlehem United Baptist Church. He then helped organize the Gethsemane United Baptist Church, where he was a charter member and served as a trustee and deacon under his death. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elbert, Everett, and William Howard Bills; his sisters, Mae Maynard and Marie Lucas Nelson. He is survived by his wife, Louise Keesee Bills; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Jack Chapman of Barboursville; one son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Karen Bills of Salt Rock; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Estelle and Ben Farley and Vetura Nida, all of Barboursville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Zachary and Roberta Bills of Barboursville, and Decker O. and Gail Bills of Proctorville, OH; four grandchildren, Scott and Ean Bills and Emily and Laura Chapman, and a host of friends and relatives. Stephen L. Cremeans, 48, of Huntington, died Saturday, April 14, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital following a courageous fight with cancer. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Westmoreland Baptist Church, 3401 Hughes Street, Huntington, W.Va. with Tom Sharp officiating. Burial in Rideglawn Memorial Park. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements. He was born October 13, 1952, Huntington, the son of Claude R. Cremeans of Wheelersburg, Ohio and the late Patricia J. Fugate Cremeans. Survivors include his wife Cheryl K. Colegrove Cremeans, daughter, Julie Cremeans, a pharmacy student at Ohio Northern University; son, Jeff Cremeans at home; brothers and sisters-in-law, Claude R. Jr. (Budge) and Sandy Cremeans of Barboursville and Terry E. and Pam Cremeans of Huntington. Steve served as a Deacon at Westmoreland Baptist Church, was a valuable member of West Huntington Kiwanis Club, where he served as Distinguished President and District Governor of Division 7. Steve was a driving force in the establishment of the West Huntington Kiwanis Little League team and was instrumental in creating one of the club’s biggest community fund raising projects, the Kiwanis-Kroger Fruit Cake Sale where thousands of dollars are raised annually to support youth programs throughout the community. He also worked hard for the establishment of K-Family clubs at Buffalo Middle School, C.K. and Vinson High Schools, now Spring Valley High School.
He was a Funeral Director, Vice President and Partner in Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge. He was a graduate of Barboursville High School (1970), Marshall University and Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science (1974). He was a member of the University of Kentucky Lions Eye Bank, being certified in Cornea removal and ear drum removal for transplantation. Steve’s professional accomplishments include being a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, where he served on the Operations, Communications, and Member Services Committees along with the governance subcommittee. Steve was a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner and served on the N.F.D.A., policy board 1998-2000 and Co-Chaired the National WWII Memorial fund raising committee for N.F.D.A. for W.Va. He was also a member of the Professional Funeral Services Practices. He was also a member of the W.Va. Funeral Directors Association, having served as President (1995-1996) and all other elective offices and various committees for the state association as well as the local District 7. Members of the West Huntington Kiwanis Club, and West Virginia. Funeral Directors served as Honorary Pallbearers. Pallbearers were Ira Handley, John Reed, Keith Kimble, Jerry Giffin, Rick Rakes, Mark Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Joseph E. Hagan Scholarship Fund c/o National Funeral Directors Association, 13625 Bishop Drive, Brookville, Wisconsin, 53005, or to the Westmoreland Baptist Church Building Fund.
Johny David Thompson
Johny David Thompson, 80, of Lavalette, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Henson Mortuary by the Rev. Frank Brizendine. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born in Cabell County, W.Va., son of the late Lou and Stella Ann Parsons Thompson. He was a merchant. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred E. Thompson in 1996; daughter Jackie Gooch; son Tommy Thompson; stepdaughter Sharon Fornash; stepson Larry Fornash; two sisters and one brother. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Grayton and Karen Thompson of South Point, Ohio; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy A. and Alan Russell and Susan K. and Melvin Rice, all of Lavalette; 25 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and several loving cousins.
