James Rondal Chapman
James Rondal Chapman, 68, of Ona, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Henson Mortuary by the Rev. Bill Cassidy. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born January 26, 1933, in Cabell County, a son of the late Locie and Mattie Ray Chapman. Mr. Chapman was a 1951 graduate of Barboursville High School, a veteran of the U.S. Navy from the Korean conflict and was a salesman at State Electric Supply Co. Surviving are his wife, Louise Stutler Chapman; one son and daughter-in-law, James R. Jr. and Rita Chapman of Ona; one sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Lonnie Kuhn of Barboursville; one brother and sister-in-law, Basil and Nancy Chapman of Barboursville; three grandchildren, Brad Chapman of Ashland, Jimmy Chapman of Ona and Drew Chapman of Ona; and one great-grandchild, Kaylyn Chapman of Barboursville. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Huntington.

Dorothy May Floyd
Dorothy May Floyd, 80, of Ona, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 8, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Beulah Ann Missionary Baptist Church, Ona, with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born February 5, 1921, in Milton, W.Va., a daughter of the late William Harvey and Lena Legg Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, CIyde Raymond Floyd. Dorothy was a homemaker. She was a member of Beulah Ann Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the Beulah Ann Senior Citizen Group. She is survived by four daughters, Joan Shaw of Ona, Janie and Jennings Hatfield of Milton, Judy and Patrick Ronk of Ona, and Cheryl and Tom Bias of Hamlin; three sons, Jim and Loretta Floyd, Jerry Floyd and Joby and Teresa Floyd, all of Ona; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great- great-grandchildren. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Wesley D. Patrick
Wesley D. Patrick, 47, of Barboursville, formerly of Logan, W.Va., went to be with and in the presence of his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 7, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at the Antioch Baptist Church by Pastor Bill Davis and Pastor Pete Davidson. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born December 25, 1953, in Logan, W.Va., a son of the late William James and Hauline Steele Patrick. He was a mechanical engineer with EEC Engineering. He graduated from Logan High School in 1971, and from West Virginia Tech in 1975. He was a professional engineer of Kentucky. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher, the editor of the Antioch Newsletter and a former AWANA Leader. He was also a former deacon of Bloomingdale-Salem Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 26-1/2 years, Beatrice Sue Smith; one daughter, Susan K. Patrick at home; one brother and sister-in-law, George Richard and Donna Patrick of Tomball, Texas; one nephew, Ricky Patrick and two nieces, Heather Katchel and Melanie Chapman; three aunts, Pauline Browning of Huntington, Sue Ann Bunting of Cleveland, Ohio, and Delores Steele of Ona, W.Va.; one uncle, James Henry Steele of Florida; special cousins, Randy and Karen Steele, with whom he made his home and grew up with as a teenager; and a host of cousins and friends. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of the arrangements.
Wesley’s favorite Bible verses were John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” and II Corinthians 4:8-10, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted but not forsaken, cast down but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.”

Denver Clayton Yoho
Denver Clayton Yoho, 87, of Gallipolis, Ohio, passed away. Saturday, near midnight, April 7, 2001, at Arbors of Gallipolis. He was a retired USDA Soil and Water Conservation Technician. He was a member of Simpson Chapel U.M. Church, Rio Grande, the Gallia County Genealogical Society, and had contributed to The Cabell Record, The Putnam Democrat and also to The West Virginia Hillbilly. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II in the European Theater. He was born June 1, 1913, at Ona, W.Va, son of the late Clyde Yoho and Estella Stevens Yoho. He married Mary Elizabeth Williams on October 14, 1938, at Gallipolis, and she survives with two daughters, Sara Alice (Richard) Northup of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Mary Jo (Charles) Jones of Gallipolis, Ohio; five grandchildren, Patrick Grant (Sharon) Northup of Charlottesville, Va., Zachary Kent (Melissa) Northup of Teays Valley, W.Va., Noel Annette Northup of Charlottesville, Va., Christopher Todd Jones of Columbus, Ohio, and Clayton Robert (Amy) Jones of Grove City, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Paige, Lucy, Alex and Sophie Northup, and Michael A. Jones; one brother, Allen F. (Mary Jane) Yoho of Massilon, Ohio;
five sisters Alma Maye Curry of San Antonio, Texas, Vesta Emaline Smith of Ironton, Ohio, Elsie Geneva (Ira) Shafer of Akron, Ohio, Edna Elizabeth “Betty” (Jay) Rhodes of Richland, Wash., and Margaret Estella “Margie” (Jack) Perry of Canvas, W.Va.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding him in death were one sister and three brothers, Opal Louise Cazad, James Eugene Yoho, Clyde Yoho Jr. and Dale Clinton Yoho. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at the McCoy Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Berry officiating. Burial in the Calvary Cemetery, Rio Grande. Military graveside rites by the Veterans Service Organizations of Gallia County.

Freda M. Nimmo
Freda M. Nimmo, 77, of Huntington, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Youngstown, Ohio. Graveside services were conducted Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Culloden Cemetery. She was born October 21, 1923, in Huntington, W.Va., daughter of the late Clyde and Bessie McCallister Nimmo. A lifelong resident of Huntington, she retired in 1987 after 37 years at Owens-Illinois in the Purchasing Department. She attended Marshall University and was an avid bowler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Jewel Gillette; and four brothers, Lemon, Cleadith, Bryan and Paul Nimmo. Survivors include one sister, Kathryn Fennell of Youngstown, Ohio; and two brothers, Kenneth “Gene” Nimmo of San Francisco, Calif., and Robert “Bill” Nimmo of Milton. Schiavone Funeral Home, Youngstown, Ohio, was in charge of arrangements.

Mamie E. Oldaker
Mamie Ethel Craig Oldaker, 91, of Buffalo died March 31, 2001, at Holzer Medical Center following a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Oma Chapel Church, Grimms Landing. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Amerdie A. Oldaker, parents, Edward and Leoata Craig, brother, Arnold Craig; sisters, Opal Sisson and Edith Tucker.
Surviving: daughters, Eulah Deweese of Buffalo and Faye Workman of Ravenswood; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two stepgreat-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Oma Chapel Church with Pastor Carl Bailes and Pastor Randy Parsons officiating. Burial was in Craig-Douglas Cemetery, Arbuckle. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

David C. Shipston
David C. Shipston, 58, of Eleanor died Saturday, March 31, 2001, in CAMC General Division after a long illness.
He was a native of Niagara Falls, New York, and came to West Virginia with the National Teachers Corps through Marshall University. He was a 28-year resident of Eleanor.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Niagara University and his master’s degree from Marshall University. He was a teacher for 27 years for the Putnam County Board of Education, mainly at Winfield Middle School. He was West Virginia Soil Conservation Teacher of the Year in 1976, a member of the Putnam County American Federation of teachers, a member of the WV Educators Association. He was recipient of the WV Muscular Dystrophy Association Personal Achievement in 1995, past president of the Eleanor Lions Club, a lover of science and nature, a musician, having taught guitar lessons for several years. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Bancroft.
Surviving: wife of 33 years, Sheila Netzer Shipston; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Joseph P. Whittington of Robertsburg; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy David and Lorri Shipston of Wilmington, North Carolina; parents, George and Leona Kane Shipston of youngstown, New York; sisters, Jo Ann Kerins of Niagra Falls and Georgia Davis of San Antonio, Texas.
Service and burial was held in Niagra Falls. A memorial service will be held locally at a later date. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of local arrangements and Rhoney Funeral Home, 901 Cayuga Street, Lewiston, New York 14092 was in charge of arrangements in New York.

Freda M. Welch
Freda M. Welch, 59, of Winfield died April 1 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Mrs. Welch was a five-year resident of Winfield, formerly of Black Betsy.
Surviving: husband, Carl E. Welch Sr.; sons, Carl E. Welch Jr. and James Ray Welch, both at home; daughter, Lisa Blevins of Hometown; brother, Mark Gillispie of Black Betsy; two grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial was held Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at New Antioch Cemetery, Red House, with the Rev. Willard Beller officiating. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

John Thomas Dunaway
John Thomas Dunaway, 62, of Hurricane died April 4, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a long illness.
He was a retired contractor and mason.
Surviving: son, Bryan Dunaway with the U.S. Army at Ft. Carson, Colorado; brothers, Virgil Dunaway Jr. of Sandyville, William Dunaway of Sissonville, Troy Dunaway of Hurricane, and Ronald Dunaway of Milton; sisters, Nova Jean England of Flatwoods, Kentucky, Janet Paul, Maxine Harmon, Mary Fizer and Phyllis Qualls, all of Hurricane, JoAnn Watts of Jersey City, New Jersey, and Helen Dunaway of Winfield.
Graveside service was held Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Marie Arthur
Margaret Marie Arthur, 90, of Winfield died April 7, 2001, at SunBridge of Putnam after a long illness.
She was a retired cashier for the State of West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. She was a lifelong resident of Winfield and had atttended Winfield Baptist Church.
Surviving; sister, Virginia C. Larabee of Winfield; and cousins.
Service was held Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Chapman-Erskine Funeral Home, Winfield, with Dr. Rodney L. Taylor officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Memorial donations may be made to The Alzheimers Association, 919 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 1100, Chicago IL 60611.

Mary Frances Boone
Mary Frances Boone, 63, of Winfield died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at home after a short illness.
She was born on December 15, 1937 in Layland, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Flora and Aden Lucas of Layland. She was a member of Chestnut Knob Community Church and a retired PLPN from Thomas Memorial Hospital where she worked for 25 years.
Surviving: husband, James L. Boone of Winfield; son and wife, James L. and Stephanie Boone Jr. of Ann Arbor, Michigan; daughters and husbands, Lee Angelia and Kevin Dages of Hinsdale, Illinois and Valerie and Charles Six of Scott Depot; grandsons, James L. Boone III, Joseph Morgan Boone, Lucas Omer Dages, Samuel Jacob Dages, Michael Anthony Marino (Six), and Charles Edward Six III; sister, Ruth Anderson of Chuloto, Florida.
Service was held Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Elder Monroe Hammon officiating. Graveside service followed at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor, West Virginia.

Ruth Ann McClanahan
Ruth Ann McClanahan, 64, of Manilla Creek, Poca, died April 8, 2001, at home after a short illness.
She was a 36 year resident of Manilla Creek, a Protestant, a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Clayton and Virgie Persinger McGrew.
Surviving: husband, Ollin J. McClanahan; children, Deborah A. Johnson of Poca, Ollin D. McClanahan of Poca and Duane C. McClanahan of Poca; brothers, Harry Ray “Sonny” McGrew of Warsaw, Ohio and Homer Cleo “Keissy” McGrew of Fredericktown, Ohio; grandchildren, Randy Bordenet Jr., Lindsey Johnson, Chrissy Thayer and Jennifer Rollins; two great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with Paul Arthur officiating. Burial was in McClanahan Cemetery, Frogs Creek. Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue. Dunbar WV 25064.

Alma Louise Bess
Alma Louise Bess, 63, of Chesapeake, Ohio, formerly of Barboursville, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in Pulley’s Care Center, South Point, Ohio. She was born August 19, 1937, in Cornstalk, W.Va., a daughter of Pearl Evelyn Jones Hall of Barboursville, W.Va., and the late Kenneth Wyatt. She worked formerly as a supervisor for the Ashland Quality Inn Hotel and Banquet, and also at the Radisson with the banquet department. Survivors include her husband, John M. Bess of Chesapeake, Ohio; a daughter Victoria Newman Noble and her husband Gene of Woodstock, Va.; two sons, Richard C. Newman and his wife Vicki of Proctorville, Ohio, and Evan Newman and his ex-wife Cheryl of South Point, Ohio; and a daughter, Makeda Bess Shebey and her husband Charles of Glen Gardner, N.J.; a sister, Delores Jean Burks of Huntington, W.Va.; a brother, Bill Wyatt of Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Shane Newman Seth Newman and his fiance, Tara Riddle, Chad Newman, Josh Newman, Aaron Newman, Christina Newman, Dakota Newman, Arthur Newman, Bennie Newman, Kelsey Shebey and Charles W. Shebey; two great-grandchildren, Tanner Newman and Allisa Newman; and special friends, David and Carol Lockwood, Dr. Don and Ann Klinestiver, and Linda, Donna, Mary Jo and Marsha. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 6, 2001, at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington.

Helen V. Murphy
Helen V. Murphy, 72, of Huntington, W.Va., died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at her residence. Funeral services were held Friday, April 6, 2001 at Beard Mortuary with Pastor Ivan Asbury and Pastor David Lemming officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born April 8, 1928, in Huntington W.V., a daughter of the late Harry Spurlock Sr. and Lieu Anna Fry Murphy. She was retired from Dock’s Creek Coal Company. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Melvin Carl Meadows Jr. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Leroy Murphy; four daughters, Dreama Doss and husband Wayne of Huntington, W.Va., Carla Meadows of Milton, W.Va., Melvina McLaughlin and her husband Bruce Allen of Milton, W.Va., and Barbara Meadows of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Sherry Smythia, Michael W. Doss, Kevin Adkins, Jamie Vance and Jacee Meadows; and a great-grandson, Micah Wilcox. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington for their care and support.

Samantha Hope Blevins
Samantha Hope Blevins,17, of Ten Mile Creek Road, went to be with the Lord on March 28, 2001. She was the daughter of Pat and Sharon Wiley Blevins. She was born August 27, 1983, in Cabell County. She was a student of Guyan Valley High School, and active in the Ferrellsburg Church of God. She was the loving sister of Patrick and Krissie Blevins, both at home. She is also survived by her fiance Richard Thompson of Barboursville, W.Va.; her grandfathers, Leonard Wiley and James Blevins, both of Ten Mile; and a host of cousins, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by one brother, Billy, and her grandmothers, Esta Blevins and Pearl Wiley. She was employed at the Little Caesars. She will always be in the hearts of those who loved her and will be sadly missed by those who knew her. Always full of life and living it to the fullest, Samantha was a very unique and special person.

James Lee “Jim” McCoy
James Lee “Jim” McCoy, 53, of Barboursville, passed away Monday, April 2, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. He was born December 20, 1947, a son of Garnett McCoy and the late Evelyn Ray McCoy. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Smith McCoy; three daughters, Debra Kitts of Huntington, and Pamela Adkins and Lisa Bryant, both of South Carolina; two sons, James Lee McCoy II and Bradley Jordan “B.J.” McCoy, both at home; two sisters, Lois and Joyce; one brother, Dale; and 14 grandchildren.

Jackie L Massie Sr.
Jackie L. Massie, Sr., 67, of Glenwood, W.Va., went to be with the Lord Monday, April 2, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Oak Hill UBI Church with the Rev. Jamie Jefferson and Pastor George Surgeon officiating. Burial in Greenbottom Cemetery. Pallbearers were Johnny Ray Mount, Devin Conrad, David Conrad, Tony Spurlock, Harold Adkins Jr. and Kenneth Dixon. He was born February 4, 1934, at Greenbottom W.Va, a son of the late Homer and Grace Mount Massie. He was retired from INCO Alloys, with 32 years of service, where he worked in the Merchant Mill and the Bar and Wire departments. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Hope Mount Massie; four brothers Grover, Kelly, Joe and Pete; and a sister, Mary Frances Massie. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Spurlock Massie; one son, Jackie Lee Massie Jr. and his wife Teresa of Glenwood; two daughters and a son-in-law, Teresa Adkins of Milton and Denise and Danny Clagg of Lesage; two brothers, Carl Massie of Huntington and Curtis Massie of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren and spouses, Holden Adkins and his wife Cathy, Melissa Dixon and her husband Kenneth, Johnathan Adkins, Kimberly Crank and her husband Chaffin, Amanda and Steven Clagg; four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Kacey Dixon, Tyler Crank and Danielle Bennett; special nieces Joann, Trisha and Diane Massie; special great-niece and nephew, Susan Clagg and Jason Massie; and a host of family and friends. Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of the arrangements.
