Sadie D. McGhee
Sadie D. McGhee, 95, of Barboursville died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the residence of her daughter. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. Mrs. McGhee was born March 2, 1906, in Albermarle County, Virginia, a daughter of the late Lewis and Florence Wells Dudley. She was the founder of Green Acres Regional Center at Lesage, and a retired Registered Nurse. She was one of 10 children, five of whom preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her husband, O.W. McGhee and one daughter, Mary Florence McGhee. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Survivors include one daughter, Martha McGhee Nance of Hurricane, W.Va.; two sisters, Rubye Mikesell of Greenbelt, Md., and Beatrice Powell of Charlottesville, Va.; two brothers, Stanford Dudley of Charlottesville, Va, and LaMont Dudley of Gordonville, Va.; two grandchildren, Deborah “Suzie” Sharp Brickey of Barboursville and Laura Sharp Beckner of Lebanon, Ohio; and five great-grandchildren. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements.
Evelyn M. Morris
Evelyn M. Morris, 84, of Red House, formerly of Buffalo, died March 26, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of Eleanor Presbyterian Church.
Surviving: daughter, Judith Jeffries of Red House; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Eleanor Presbyterian Church with Dr. Denise Hall officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements. The family requests memorial donations be made to Eleanor Presbyterian Church, PO Box 896, Eleanor WV 25070.
Betty R. West
Betty R. West, 67, of Winfield died March 25, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was an in-home caregiver and a Baptist.
Surviving: mother, Thelma West Chapman; brothers, Jack L. West and Thomas L. West; sister, Charlotte West, all of Winfield.
Service was held Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with the Rev. Jamie Wright officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Margaret I. Dailey
Margaret Irene “Peg” Legg Dailey, 85, of Bancroft died March 27, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after an extended illness.
She was an honorary member of the Rebekah Lodge, one of the original organizers of the Bancroft Fire Department, an original member of the group that incorporated the Town of Bancroft, a former town council member, a member of Multi-Cap and a member of the Bancroft Church of God Mission.
Surviving: daughter, Carolyn Hedrick of Napier, West Virginia; sons, John and Jack, both of Bancroft; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, other relatives and a host of friends.
Service was held Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Bancroft Church of God Mission with Pastor John Taylor officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
Roxie Donna Pitts
Roxie Donna Pitts, 55, of Winfield died March 25, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was a 25-year employee of Thomas Memorial Hospital and a member of Nitro Moose Lodge 565.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Pat Shaffer and Roy Pitts, parents, George and Reba Meikle Harmon, sisters, Betty Harmon, Emma Burrington and Stella Markland, and brother, Roger Harmon.
Surviving: daughter, Melissa Shaffer of Winfield; son, Michael Harmon of Leon; sisters, Vera Miller of Plain City, Ohio, Velma Cabello of Houston, Texas, Margaret Poland, Mary Miller and Patsy Harmon, all of Peru, Indiana; brothers, Kermit Kessel Harmon of Peru, Mayo Denzil Harmon of Lima, Ohio, Donald of West Harrison, Indiana, David Harmon of Rockville, Maryland, Darrel Harmon of St. Albans, and Kyle Harmon of Peru; 12 grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Frank Chapman officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Ruth J. Stone
Ruth J. King Stone, 83, of Leon died March 26, 2001, in OSU Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
She was a homemaker and attended Smith Church, Leon. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles “Bear” King and Lenna Stewart King.
Surviving: husband of 65 years, Herman Stone; sons, Gene Stone and wife, Nancy, and Gary Stone and wife, Anna, all of Columbus; daughters, Marcella Thomas and husband, Bob, of Columbus, Linda Martin and husband, Howard, of Buffalo; sisters, Ruby Pickens of Marion, Ohio, Kathleen Hill of Columbus, and Juanita Burdette of Leon; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Service was held Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Herman Jordan and the Rev. Sampy Hart officiating. Burial was in Smith Cemetery, Leon.
Nettie I. Boggess
Nettie Irene Boggess, 87, of Hurricane died March 28, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of the Main Street Church of Christ, former owner of the Hurricane Grill, a published poet, homemaker and lifelong resident of the area.
Surviving: daughter, Violet Peggy Martin of Huricane; grandson, Donald “Eddy” Martin of Hurricane; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Main Street Church of Christ, Hurricane, with Minister George Erwin and Minister Doug Minton officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
Roger Lee Boggs Jr.
Roger Lee Boggs Jr., 35, of Liberty died March 29, 2001, in an automobile accident.
He was a maintenance foreman for Tri-State Greyhound Park. He was a member of the American Motorcycle Association and a former Motor Cross Champion. He was a 1983 graduate of DuPont High School.
Surviving: wife, Cynthia Burdette Boggs; daughter, Alicia Elaine Boggs at home; son, Roger Lee Boggs III of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; stepson, Christopher Lucas at home; father, Roger Lee Boggs Sr. of Summersville; mother, Millie Ervin Burdette of Dunbar; brother, Jeremy Boggs of South Charleston; half-brother, Cody Boggs of Summersville; maternal grandparents, Blaine and Ruth Ervin of Quinwood; paternal grandmother, Mary Boggs of Tioga.
Service was held Monday, April 2, 2001, at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with the Rev. Earl Cochran officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.
John R. Neumeyer
John R. Neumeyer, 85, of Hurricane died March 31, 2001, at Moris Memorial Nursing Home, Milton, after a long illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County, a former Carbide employee, and retired from Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, with 18 years service as a custodian. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Hurricane, and VFW American Legion Post #135, Hurricane, and he was an Army veteran of WWII.
Surviving: nieces, Mary Jean Cooper of Milton, Linda Faye Holley of Hurricane, and Barbara Estep of Alum Creek; nephew, Charles Wyant of Hurricane.
Service was held Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Jim McGehee and Dr. Charles Hendricks officiating. Burial was in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.
Ernestine B. Brawley
Ernestine Brown “Tommie” Brawley, 87, of Hurricane died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, following a long illness.
She was a retired teacher and had taught 35 years in Kanawha County Schools. She was a Methodist.
Surviving: several nieces and nephews; caregiver, Penny Nelon of Hurricane.
Service was held Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rodney Campbell officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Memorial donations may be sent to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.
William Bascom McClure
William Bascom McClure, 84, of Barboursville, W.Va., formerly of Dehue and Omar, W.Va., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital after a long illness. Mr. McClure was born in Louisa, Ky., on July 26, 1916, a son of the late James Bascom and Esther Chafin McClure. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Musick McClure in 1960, one sister, Goodwill “Betty” Woodard of Fort Worth, Texas; three brothers, Andrew Bascom McClure of Christian, W.Va., Frances Marion McClure of Granbury, Texas, and Paul Laban McClure of Gassaway, W.Va. He is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Helen Bailey McClure; his daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Joe and Larry Alan McClanahan of Barboursville, W.Va.; two grandsons, Jamy Alan and Joseph Alan McClanahan of Barboursville; one sister, Mary Esther Cunningham of Roxton, Texas; two nieces and their husbands, Peggy and Robert Mills of Paris, Texas. and Yvonne and Vernon Scott of Bella Vista, Ark.; one nephew, James Harry McClure of Man, W.Va., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. McClure is a graduate of Tupelo Military Academy, Tupelo, Miss., and attended Tupelo Military Academy College for two years, lettering in baseball, football, basketball, track and tennis. Bill had 43 years mining experience as a supervisor with Youngstown Mines Corporation in Dehue, W.Va., and Omar Mining Company. Mr. McClure was a member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church and the Pennington Sunday School Class in Barboursville, W.Va.
Bill was an avid bowler in the senior league at the Strike Zone. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Logan Chapter #60 and Aracoma Lodge No. 99 AF&AM of Logan, The York Rite Bodies, Logan Chapter No. 41 and Logan Commandery No. 26. Funeral services were held March 31st at Steele Memorial Methodist Church, Barboursville, WV, with the Rev. Edward Grant officiating. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Jamy McClanahan, Joseph McClanahan, John Call, Rondel Wilkinson, Bill Sebestin, Robert Day, James R. Hyatt and Douglas Spurlock. Donations may be made to either Steele Memorial Methodist Church building fund or the Heart or Lung Association.
Madeline Gail Fleshman
Madeline Gail Fleshman, 74, of South Charleston went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. William G. Kniceley officiating. Burial in Milton Cemetery. She was born May 26, 1926, in Milton, W.Va, a daughter of the late Chester and Pearl Chapman Harshbarger. She was owner and operator of Fleshman Monument, Charleston. She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Padon of Charleston; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Cindy Fleshman of South Charleston; one brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Dora Harshbarger; one grandson, Alex Padon; and one granddaughter, Kari Padon.
