Jeanette W. Garner, 83, of Hurricane died Sunday, June 17, 2001, in SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center of Dunbar after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Hurricane Church of Christ.
She was prededed in death by her husband, Kelcy E. Garner.
Surviving: son, John D. Garner of St. Albans; sister, Pauline Anderson of Fort Collins, Colorado; grandson, Jerry L. Garner of St. Albans; great-granddaughter, Scarlet Garner of St. Albans.
Service was held Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Lewis Watts officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

James N. Brewer Sr.
James N. Brewer Sr. 65, of St. Albans died June 20, 2001 at home.
Mr. Brewer was a native of Poca and a 42-year rsident of St. Albans. He was retired from the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services with 25 years service, a member of IOOF Putnam Lodge No,. 85 in Poca, and a Navy veteran, having served on the USS Intrepid.
Surviving: wife, Lula G. Brewer; daughter, Patricia Ennis of Pennsauken, New Jersey; son, James N. Brewer Jr. of Hurricane; sisters, Emma Jean Meeks of Hometown and Jo Harper of Ashland, Kentucky; brothers, Woodson W. Brewer of Red House and Billy Lee Brewer of Nitro; grandsons, Donald Allen Ennis Jr., Christopher Nolan Enis and Benjamin Nolan Brewer; stepgrandson, Jamie Marino.
Service was held Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Dorris Walls officiating. Burial with military rites was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Grace H. Holsopple
Mrs. Grace H. Holsopple, 94, of Scott Depot died June 20, 2001, at home after a short illness.
She was a lifelong member of Fisk United Methodist Church, Fallentimber, Pennsylvania, and was a mother, homemaker, secretary, and had served as a hospital ward clerk during her lifetime. She was the first state president of the Navy Mothers club, Bluefield, West Virginia. Her hobbies included oil painting, ceramics, sewing and knitting. She was a six-year resident of Scott Depot, a 38-year resident of Arlington, Texas, a 26-yeear resident of Bluefield, and was originally from Pennsylvania.
She was preceded in death by her hsuband, Freeman V. Holsopple in 1967, a son, Charles L. of Piladelphia, three sisters and one brother.
Surviving: sons, Leon of Forth Worth, Texas and Dale of Scott Depot; sister, Betty Bland of Clarksburg; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; niece, Louise Aylor of Madison, Virginia; nephew, Glen Gray Jr. of Stow, Ohio.
Service was held Sunday, June 24, 2001, at McQuown Funeral Home, Glasgow, Pennsylvania, with the Rev. Dave Heckman officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of local arrangements.

Emma Lee Lewis
Emma Lee McGill Lewis, 90, of Eleanor died Friday, June 22, 2001, at CAMC General Division, following a short illness.
She was a native of Red House and lived in Eleanor since 1947, taught in the first school in Eleanor, where the classrooms were located in the barracks in 1935. At that time, there were eight teachers. She was a retired teacher with 38 years of service, a member of the West Virginia and Putnam County Association of Retired School Employees. She was a graduate of the University of Charleston, a member of the Eleanor Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Extension Homemakers of Putnam County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Estel Lewis.
Surviving: daughters, Carole Lee Jividen of Knoxville, Tennessee and Ella Fay Butcher of Poca; sons, James J. Lewis of Hermitage, Tennessee and Holly E. Lewis of Eleanor; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Carl C. Adams
Carl C. Adams of Green Valey, Arizona, formerly of Hurricane, died June 20, 2001.
He was born June 9, 1921 in Glaymorgan, Virginia to Hassel A. and Ida Hubbard Adams. He was married to Bonnie Dalton on August 31, 1947.
Mr. Adams served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a graduate of Morris Harvey College, West Virginia University and the University of Louisville . He served as probation officer in Juvenile and Intermediate Court for six years in Kanawha County, and was employed as therapist-mental health with the Veterans Hospital in Huntington for 30 years. He was a member of Valley Presbyteriab Church, Green Valley, a member of Sleepy Hollow Golf Club and a lifetime member of NASW.
Surviving: wife, Bonnie Dalton Adams; sister-in-law, Mrs. Douglas E. Dalton of Marietta, Georgia; nephew, Douglas E. Dalton II of Houston, Texas; niece, Barbara Dalton Minsk of Nashville, Tennessee; great-nephews and a great-niece; a number of cousins and friends.
Service was held Monday, June 25, 2001, at First Church of God, Charleston, with Pastor Ed Bowman, Dr. J.D. Harrah and the Rev. Kevin Channel officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Lesta A. Burdette
Lesta A. Burdette, 83, of Hurricane died in St. Mary’s Hospital after a short illness.
She was a member of Marlaing Church of Christ of St. Albans. She was a lifelong resident of the area.
She was preceded in death by Roscoe H. Burdette.
Surviving: daughter, Violetta Burdette Bledsoe and son-in-law, Darrell Bledsoe, of Hurricane; sister, Frieda Haynes of Ironton, Ohio; brother, Bill Edwards of South Charleston; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; special nieces and nephews.
Service was held Monday, June 25, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Minister Michael Mayo officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

Wilma Frances Tucker
Wilma Frances Tucker, 74, of Hurricane died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at home.
She was retired from the John Henson Senior Center and a lifelong resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: sons, Hubert, William, Steve and Wayne Tucker, all of Hurricane; daughter, Sheila Stewart of Hurricane; stepson, Buck Tucker of Hurricane; stepdaughters, Mae Chase and Faye Meeks, both of Hurricane; sisters, Thelma Wood and Betty Qualls of Hurricane; brother, Verland Setliff of Wisconsin; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Walter Allen officiating. Burial was in Peach Ridge Cemetery.

Robert S. Blackshire Sr.
Robert S. “Bob” Blackshire Sr., 57, of Midway died June 24, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
He was a former heavy equipment operator and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: wife, Mary A. Blackshire; daughter. Robin Blackshire of Granite, Maryland and Deanna Blackshire of Shepherdstown; son, Robert S. Blackshire Jr. of Midway.
Service was held Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo. Burial was in Shiloah Cemetery, Red House.

Betty Jo Walker
Betty Jo Walker, 76, of Scott Depot died June 24, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a short illness.
She was a retired receptionist from Union Carbide Corp, Institute Plant, with 37 years’ service, and a graduate of Dunbar High School.
Surviving: sister, Ruby M. Henson of Scott Depot; many friends.
Burial will be at a later date. Memorial donations may be sent to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064 or the American Cancer Society, 301 RHL Blvd., South Charleston WV 25309.

Mollie B. Morrison
Mollie B. Morrison, 89, of Barboursville, went home to be with the Lord June 18, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 21, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Henry Clay and the Rev. Lewis Combs. Burial in Baylous Cemetery, Salt Rock. She was born June 14, 1912, in Wayne, W.Va., a daughter of the late Lee and Nona Bias Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oda; one daughter, Pauline; one son, Delbert; two sisters, Mae Bartram and Grace Adkins; and two brothers, Willie and Carnie Martin. She is survived by her son Donald and his wife Cherie of Barboursville; a daughter-in-law, Frances; five grandsons, Russell and his wife Jocelyn of Barboursville, Mark and his wife Dusti of Barboursville, Stephen Morrison of Barboursville, Timothy and his wife, Jeannie of South Carolina, and Kevin Morrison of Huntington; one granddaughter, Lisa and her husband Chuck Adkins of St. Louis, Mo.; six great-grandsons, Zachary and Tanner Morrison, Jeremy and Justin Adkins, Joshua Morrison and Jacob Morrison; one step-great-grandson, Stephen Brumfield of South Carolina; one great-granddaughter, April Bias of Barboursville; special friends, Penny Mount, Tara Cazad and Alisha Meece; and several nephews, special nieces and friends.

Vada Marie Wray
Vada Marie Wray, 84, of Lesage, formerly of Milton, W.Va., went to her new home to be with Jesus on June 18, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital after a long illness. The daughter of the late James Isaac and Rosetta Nida Setliff, she was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother and wife. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Wray, one son Henry Dale Wray, two infant daughters, two brothers, five sisters and one infant grandson. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, WV, with Pastor Emmett Rawson officiating. Burial in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom, W.Va. She leaves behind her loving daughter and very special son-in-law, with whom she made her home, Betty and Jerry Gawthrop of Lesage, WV; two grandsons, Michael (Betty) Wray of Milton, and Larry Dunn of Huntington; three granddaughters, Melissa (Eric) Haynes of Milton, Rita (Steve) Smith of Barboursville and Betty Jo Murrell, of Barboursville; six great-grandchildren, Adam, Danielle, Becky, Monte, Randi and Chad; and a very special loving friend, Elra Gillispie of Ashton, W.Va.

Donald W. Black
Donald W. Black, 72, of Barboursville, WV, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, with Dr. Stan Maynard officiating. Burial in Milton Cemetery. He was born December 20, 1928, in Milton, W.Va., a son of the late Warren and Georgia Lewis Black. He was a retired machinist from Union Carbide, and was a member of the Church in the Valley, Milton. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Smith Black in 1982, and an infant sister, Rosemary Black. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Holley Black; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Donald A. and Vicki Black of Huntington, Charles M. and Mary A. Black of Manassas, Va., Mark Douglas Black of Edgewater, Fla., and Jeffrey A. Black of Alderson, W.Va.; one stepdaughter, Martha Hood and her husband Sam of Huntington; one stepson, David Hager and his wife Arlene of Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and special friends Marshall and Dorothy Hood and Gene Alden Stewart, all of Huntington. Pallbearers were sons, son-in-law and Gene Stewart.

Lester Wayne Hinkle
Lester Wayne Hinkle, 47, of Milton went home to be with his Lord and Savior, on June 22, 2001. He was a Glass worker with Blenko Glass, Milton and member of Valley View Baptist Church, Hurricane. The son of the late George L. and Lillian Faye Davis Hinkle. A graveside service was conducted Monday, June 25, 2001 at Culloden Cemetery, Culloden with Pastor Jason Black officiating. He is survived by is wife, Vickie Chapman Hinkle; three daughters, Andrea Rose Sinclair, of Warrenton, Va., Sara Christine Hinkle, and Linsey Jane Hinkle, both at home; Grandmother, Elma Davis, of Culloden; Sister, Veronica Berry, of Culloden; two Brothers, Gary Hinkle, of South Charleston, and Mike Hinkle, of Culloden; two Grandchildren, Lydia Grace Sinclair, and Ethan Gregory Sinclair, both of Warrenton, Va. Several Nieces and Nephews. Heck Funeral Home, Milton was in charge of arrangements.

Velma J. Lewis
Velma J. Lewis, 82, of Ona, WV, went home to be with the Lord, on June 24, 2001, Widow of the late Hal Lewis. She was born on June 16, 1919 in Mason County, WV, and the daughter of the late Oscar and Aretta Morris Chapman. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Heck Funeral Home, with Rev. Brent Gibson officiating. Burial in Blue Sulphur Cemetery, Ona. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Opal Ryder, and four brothers, Locie, Linville, Howard, and Clifford Chapman. She was a homemaker and member of Mud River Baptist Church, Milton. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Homer and Pat Lewis, of Milton; two daughters and son-in-law, Judy and Cledith Meadows, of Milton, and Brenda Chancy, of Ona; one sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Frank Brotherton, of Huntington; two brothers and sister-in-laws, Richard and Peggy Chapman, and Carl and Rosie Chapman, both of Ona; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren.

Clovis “Fuzzie” Lucas
Clovis “Fuzzie” Lucas, 78, of Salt Rock W.Va, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2001. Funeral service were conducted Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Rev. Lonnie Wilson. Burial in the Lucas Family Cemetery. He was born June 7, 1923, in Cabell County, a son of the late Lonzo and Vicie Swanson Lucas. He attended Lincoln Church of God. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lula Hager Lucas; his second wife, Lillian M. Robertson Lucas; and one brother, Joseph Lucas. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Ron Myers of Columbus, Ohio; one stepson and daughter-in-law, David and Debbie Ellis of Huntington; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Billy Pauley of Huntington; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Glenna Lucas, Vesta Coleman, Evelyn and James Buckley, and Kathryn and Bernard Beckett, all of Salt Rock, and Violet and Raynor Gue of Barboursville; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Delbert Gail and Barbara Lucas, and Edward Lee Lucas, all of Salt Rock and Rev. Michael and Virginia Lucas of Chapmanville; two grandchildren, Angie and Roger Broomfield; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to especially thank Dr. Yvonne Willard and Hospice of Lincoln County for their care.

Clinton Leonard “Bud” Keay
Clinton Leonard “Bud” Keay, 81, of Ona, formerly of Huntington passed away June 23, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 25, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Doug Spurlock, Rev. Donald K. Vinson and Rev. Brent Gibson. Burial in Blue Sulphur Cemetery, Western Star Lodge #11 conducted Masonic graveside services. He was born August 4, 1919, in Streator, Ill., a son of the late William and Rosina Danhofk Keay. He was a retired employee of CSX Railroad; a veteran of the U.S. Navy; a member of Western Star Lodge #11, A.F. & A.M., Guyandotte, W.Va., Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Beni Kedem Temple, Charleston; a volunteer for Ronald McDonald House; president of the Forever Young Club; and he was in Jan Whitt’s exercise group. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Johnson Keay; two daughters, Judy Maynard of Springfield, Ill. and Janie Shaver of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; four stepdaughters, Charlene Bias of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Rhonda Sheffield of Johnson City, Tenn., Renee Riffe of Virginia Beach, Va., and Karita Linville of Proctorville, Ohio; one stepson, Luke Burns of Holland, Mich.; three grandchildren, Todd Maynard, Carl Trimble and Mindy Morton; one great-grandson, Luke Morton; one niece, Marilyn Murdock; and a special niece, Bing Murphy. Oscar Bailey
Oscar Bailey, 88, of Barboursville, husband of Lenora E. Chapman Bailey, died Saturday, June 233, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Also surviving are two daughters, Diana Bailey Lester of Blueridge, Va., and Robin Jackson of Culloden; and one son, Michael Lee Bailey of Ona. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville; burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Alta Alma McGinnis
Alta Alma McGinnis, 91, of Milton went home to be with the Lord on January 5, 2001, in Phoenix, Ariz. The daughter of the late Riley and Sarah Edmonds, she was a price clerk with Montgomery Ward and a member of Camelback Church of Christ, Phoenix. A memorial service was held Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Culloden Cemetery, Culloden. She is survived by a son, Dan D. McGinnis of Phoenix; a daughter, Vada Taylor of Phoenix; a grandson Troy McGinnis of Phoenix; and two great-granddaughters, Katrinna and Nicole McGinnis, both of Phoenix. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

George Arthur Finley
Word has been received here of the death of GEORGE ARTHUR FINLEY OSBORNE of HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA. He was born September 18, 1969 in HOUSTON, TEXAS. He died Friday June 15, 2001 at his home in HUNTSVILLE. He was the son of the late JAN ROBIN FINLEY. He is survived by his wife, STEPHANIE LACKEY OSBORNE. A son, ROBERT & a daughter, ANA OSBORNE, all of HUNTSVILLE. Two half sisters, GENNIFER BRANDO of WICHITA, KANSAS & CHRISTINA ROBIN FINLEY of BAKERSFIELD, CA. His mother, KATHY LYNN MOTOCK of WICHITA, KANSAS. A brother, CLINTON ROY FINLEY & ROBYN LYNN of PROCTORVILLE, OH. His paternal grandparents, JAMES A. and IDA MILDRED CARTMILL FINLEY also of PROCTORVILLE, OHIO. GEORGE is also survived by a host of AUNTS, UNCLES, NIECES & NEPHEWS & COUSINS that mourn his passing. Services were held on SUNDAY in HUNTSVILLE - June 17, 2001.

Sylvia M. Cisco
Sylvia M. Conway Cisco, 94, of Poca died June 9, 2001, in Teays Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.
She was a housewife most of her life and also worked for Fletcher Enamel for five years and Evans Supermarket, Dunbar, for three years. She was a member of Poca United Methodist Church, Methodist Women, Poca Senior Citizens and Putnam County Homemakers Association. She was a fifth generation mother.
Surviving: daughter, Betty June Conway Westfall of Poca; son, Clayton Richard Conway of Lawrence, Kansas; sister, Belva Peaker of Sissonville, five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Dorothy J. Runyon
Dorothy J. Runyon, 79, of Hurricane died June 12, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane, a homemaker and a lifelong resident of the area.
Surviving: sons, Bill of Oak Hill, John of Gun Barrel, Texas, Bob and Jeff, both of Hurricane, and Donald of Savannah, Georgia; daughters, Dorothy Brammer of Mabank, Texas and Sandie Robertson of Culloden; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Dr. Charles Hendricks officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Lewis Ray Hodges
Lewis Ray Hodges, 89, of Hurricane died June 13, 2001, in Teays Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hurricane, retired from FMC Corp., a member of Putnam Lodge 139 AF & AM, and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Sovine Hodges.
Surviving: son, Arden Hodges of Hurricane; daughter, Nancy Tolley of Hurricane; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial was in Hodges Cemetery near Hurricane.

Opal L. Keffer
Opal Lucille Keffer, 91, of Hurricane died June 14, 2001.
Surviving: husband, Frank Keffer.
Service was held Sunday, June 17, 2001 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Entombment was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Ruby P. Byrd
Ruby Pauline Byrd, 78, of Hurricane died Friday, June 15, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington.
Ruby was born April 30, 2001 in Hurricane, a daughter of the late Joseph Baxter and Edna Lenora Holcomb Wood. She was a member of the Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, White W. Racer; sisters, Linda Monk, Dorothy I. Carpenter and Iva Jean Stratton; brother, Denver C. Wood.
Surviving: husband, Donald R. Byrd; children, Bonnie J. Johnson, Sherry E. Tabor, Joseph W. Racer and Wesley C. Racer, all of Hurricane; sisters, Janice Voser of Chlicothe, Ohio, Janet Hamrick, Reba Barrett and Kathleen Shrout, all of hurricane; brothers, Jessie P. Wood, Leslie E. Wood, Chester C. Wood, all of Hurricane, and Alria C. Wood of Loudon, Tennessee; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Betty Lou Riley, 55, of Huntington died Friday, June 15, 2001 in Mariner Health Care. Survivors include three brothers; Davy D. Riley of Lesage, William D. Riley of Milton and Gary L. Hoke of Proctorville, Ohio; and three sisters, Mary M. Perkins of Huntington, Joanne T. Holle of Nashville, Tenn, and Etta M. Branham of Huntington. Funeral services were held Monday, June 18, 2001 at Apostolic Life Cathedral; burial in Baylous Cemetery, Salt Rock. Milton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Donald W. Black, 72, of Barboursville, husband of Kathleen Holley Black and widow of Jane Smith Black, died Saturday, June 16, 2001 at home. He was a retired machinist with Union Carbide. Also surviving are four sons Donald A. Black of Huntington, Charles M. Black of Manassas, Va., Mark Douglas Black of Edgewater, Fla, and Jeffrey A. Black of Alderson. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge; burial in Milton Cemetery.
